Chavan, the ex-deputy Prime Minister of India, and Hon’ble Shri. Sharadchandraji Pawar, the Union Agriculture Minister, and conducted by the Nagrik Shikshan Sanstha NSS COLLEGE OF COMMERCE & ECONOMICS is recognized by Govt. of Maharashtra, approved by UGC & affiliated to University of Mumbai. The college offers 3 year bachelor degree in Commerce (B.Com). It also runs other professional educational institutions like D.Ed., B.Ed., and Pharmacy College & Hill Spring International School. VISION:- :-“To attain academic excellence, find a rightful place of honors in personal and public life through competitive spirit & to play a vital role in socio economic progress of country & to give education for prosperity”. MISSION AND GOALS: - • Motto of imparting primary and secondary education for the poorer, economically backward and socially marginalized sections of the community. • Bringing out the best in the first generation graduates from lower middle class and equipping them to face the challenges of the modern world. • To empower the youth through value based education to make them into a responsible citizens of society. • To instill values such as self confidence & self realization in students belonging to mediocre social strata. • Assist the students in surmounting their financial & other shortcomings & helping them getting graduate level education so that they stand a better chance in joining vocation of their choice. PROGRESS WAS MADE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR:- • Library reference books & news paper clipping exhibition was organized. • The college hosted intercollegiate chess tournament & high quality sports materials were purchased. • A new convention centre with Air-Conditioned Auditorium with modern facilities has been ready & available to students. • Advance payment received from UGC-XI plan. • Invited a large number of companies, organizations regarding placement of students. • Students made maximum participation in extra curricular activities. • Counseling lectures for ATKT students were engaged. • Coding system implemented last year in exam, is continued to improve transparency & to maintain confidentiality. • The equipments were upgraded in administrative office, computer lab & library. PART –B 1) ACTIVITIES REFLECTING THE GOALS OF OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTION : The college continuously is making sincere efforts to achieve the goals and objectives. It tries to enhance student's overall intellectual, physical and cultural development. The management, teaching and non teaching staff and the students of our college are dedicated to take the college to excellence in education. FOLLOWING ARE THE ACTIVITIES REFLECTING THE GOALS OF OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTION: • The college has organized Library reference books & news paper clipping exhibition on 13th & 14th Aug 2007 to increase the utilization of library books & to encourage the reading habits among students. • The college hosted 'intercollegiate chess tournament' on 11th & 12th Sept, 2007. • Various activities have been undertaken by NSS unit focusing on health, hygiene, water conservation illiteracy, adult education etc. 10 day's special residential camp was also organized as a part of NSS activity. • Since 1999-2000, Our college conducts JOSH – a high profile inter- collegiate singing and dance competition. This was organized on 19th January 2008.There was overwhelming response from the participants. • There was maximum participation of students in extracurricular activities as well as academic completions. • Invited a large number of companies, organizations regarding placement of students. • College publishes annual college magazine “Yashodhwaj”. It contains reports & highlights of various activities. It promotes student’s creativity & provides platform for young talents. It encourages & appreciates winners by publishing their achievements. • Remedial coaching to weaker students was arranged. • There was special coaching for dance drama, street plays by noted choreographers and directors. • Our students have successfully participated in intercollegiate sports events. Outstanding coaches in Cricket, Volley ball and Kabaddi were appointed to prepare our students and to provide enough guidance and motivation for sports participation. Regular practice sessions were conducted before the tournaments. • WDC has organized a workshop on the topic 'YOGA - for Stress Management’ in order to create awareness among the students. • Placement cell has invited various companies/organizations for placement of our students. Various orientations, guest lectures, campus interviews were conducted regarding part time/vocational jobs. 2) NEW ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES INITIATED :- 1) The college has already proposed to start following Add-on-Courses, which will commence from the next academic year. i. e-Commerce(Certificate, Diploma and Advance Diploma) ii. Advertising ,Sales Promotion and Sales Management(Certificate and Diploma) 3) INNOVATIONS IN CURRICULAR DESIGN AND TRANSACTIONS :- Teachers are members of various professional bodies which enable them to use innovative teaching method to simplify learning process and make it interesting. F.Y.B.Com. students are given tutorials in English and Maths based on syllabus to develop their writing skills, use of English language and logical thinking. Majority is computer literate & therefore is able to use computer as a tool. To increase the efficiency in all activities. 4) INTER-DISCIPLINARY PROGRAMMES STARTED:- Members of the Teaching staff having regular contact with various departments of the University, which enable them to contribute for important decision in the teaching learning process. Accountancy Department undertook numerous programmes to give the students practical knowledge about Accounting and taxation. T.Y.B.Com. students undertook small research Projects based on their syllabus which help them to develop a Research Aptitude. 5) EXAMINATION REFORMS IMPLEMENTED :- The system of coding introduced last year has been continued. Majority of the Departments have increased the frequency of the class tests especially at the Third Year Valued answer sheets were shown to students and their strong points, weaknesses were pointed out. A.T.K.T. Counseling lectures were arranged. The NSS (National Service Scheme) unit of college has conducted various activities during the year 2007-2008. N.S.S. 10 days Special Camp at Shere village Taluka: Shahapur Dist.Thane from 21st Dec.2007 to 30th Dec.2007. We have conducted NSS camp at Shere village from 21st Dec.2007 to 30th Dec.2007 such camp organized in Tribal area. NSS Volunteers had undertaken “Gram Swachhata Abhiyaan", Sweeping roads, cleaning the public places, removable of plastic bags etc. Total 52 volunteers had participated in NSS Camp. The volunteers gave speech to villagers about cleanliness, Aids awareness, increasing population, Literacy, smoking, drinking liquor etc .Thane District Co- coordinator NSS Unit Mumbai, Prof .B.S.Bidwe visited camp place & gave excellent remark. The gram Panchayat, Shere village awarded “Appreciation Certificate to volunteers for their efforts. Both the Teaching & Non-Teaching staff members extended their support for the 10days residential camp. Tree Plantation:- NSS unit of our college had undertaken the programme of “Tree Plantation “on 13th Aug.2007, our I/c Principal Prof. Raj Soshte inaugurate the “Tree plantation programme.” Pulse Polio Immunization Project:- The Pulse polio project was undertaken on 9th August, 2007 our NSS Unit was invited by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Health Home to assist them in this project & also gave dosage to the children below 5 years at age group in Janta Nagar, Tulsiwadi. MP Mills compound Tardeo. Aids Awareness Programme:- On 1st Dec.2007 volunteers from NSS Unit was invited by Siddharth College , Mumbai to participate in the rally organized by Mumbai University .Hence we were asked to present in the college 7.30 a.m. & prepare the posters , slogans etc. for the rally. Ganesh Immersion- Traffic Control Duty:- On 22nd Sept. to 25th Sept.2007 we had given an opportunity by Girgaon police station a Traffic Control Duty. Our College 52 volunteers participated in Traffic control duty. The volunteers were divided into 5 different groups & done excellent job. Hiroshima Peace Rally:- University of Mumbai invited our NSS Unit on 6th August, 2007 for this rally. Near about 42 volunteers had given active participation for this rally at Azad maidan Mumbai. This year also we have provided book bank facility to 76 students (26 from F.Y. B.Com and 25 each students from S.Y. and T.Y B.Com.). The book bank scheme is given to the students belonging to S.C., S.T., OBC and General category students on merit basis. • News paper clipping: We are regularly receiving 6 news papers (4 English & 2 Marathi) and every day we are providing the news paper clipping service. In this we covered important news like Mumbai University and college related news. The file is maintained in the library. • Indexing to Economic Times: The Indexing to Economic Times was started from 11th July 2006. Keying in the Editorial and the first page news and important news with giving reference to the date of publication, author and the page number of the article. This information is useful for projects and research work to be carried out in future and for bibliometrics study. • Classification of Books :- Classification of books is started by using DDC (Dewi Decimal Classification) 22nd Edition, Spine label is printed and stick to the book. • Referral Services: The referral service is must for all the libraries. So it becomes mandatory for the library to recommend the students to other library/ libraries based on the requirement and the availability of the information in the referring library. • Photocopying facility: The photocopying facility is provided to the students and the staff members. It is helpful for users to take photocopy of library material/s at a minimum cost. • Internet facility:- Internet based services are started. Feed back of teaching staff is taken from the students after the completion of syllabus. Feed back received is analyzed & considered in teacher's appraisal. However principal observes lectures of all teaching faculty members & new appointees. 23) UNIT COST OF EDUCATION - RS 3990/- PER STUDENT. 24) COMPUTERIZATION OF ADMINISTRATION AND THE PROCESS OF ADMISSIONS AND EXAM RESULTS, ISSUE OF CERTIFICATES. The Administrative staff of our college has been provided one computer with printer to carry out their routine administrative work. 25) INCREASE IN THE INFRA-STRUCTURAL FACILITIES:- The college has been gradually developing its infrastructure. Following activities are undertaken in the last academic year. i) Renovation of college building. ii) Cleaning of college sports ground. 26) TECHNOLOGY UP-GRADATION:- The Internet facility is made available to all Teaching and Non-Teaching staff members. We have casual annual maintenance contract with computer professionals. The college has LCD Projector and DVD players which are useful for power point presentation. 27) COMPUTER AND INTERNET ACCESS AND TRAINING TO TEACHERS AND STUDENTS: Central computer facility is available in the college. Computer lab is accessible to students & staff members. Internet access and training is provided to Teachers and students. 28) FINANCIAL AID TO STUDENTS: The college awards number of free ships & half ships to deserving students. Govt Scholarship: Students belonging to schedule caste & schedule tribes state are eligible. College Merit Scholarship: Students who have 60% or above at H. Sc. of Maharashtra state are eligible. (Subject to conditions). Concessions in payment: This is granted to economically backward students. 29) ACTIVITIES AND SUPPORT FROM THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION:- NSS ALUMNI is gradually becoming active. The Alumni supports in extra- curricular and cultural activities. Alumni also help for conducting “JOSH”- Intercollegiate festival. Alumni holds meeting, Get together for the ex-students. The college is also pursuing to help alumni members for better placements. It aims • Coaching, guidance and financial support for the students. • Developing the sense of belonging to the college among the students. • Providing placement services for mutual help. • Offering career counseling to the students. • Recognizing meritorious achievements 30) HEALTH SERVICES: College has been providing medical help for years through Institution Health Centre. 31) PERFORMANCE IN SPORTS: The sports committee plans, schedules and conducts Sports events every year which are necessary for continuous growth of the college. Our team events & indoor games were conducted during the course of the year 2007-08 in our college premises and PDP sports ground, Peddar Road, Mumbai. Organization of Intercollegiate Chess- Tournament: Our college organized 'Intercollegiate Chess Tournament' on 11th and 12th September 2007 at college premises. The prestigious Chess tournament got a very good response and saw total 86 students (64 boys + 22 girls) from 25 colleges. Chief Arbiter of the tournament was Sri. S.M. Hule supported by Sri Nitin Wardhe, Mr. Prakash Raut and Assistant arbiter Sri Saideepak Raj from Mumbai chess association. The tournament was inaugurated at the hands of Mr. Paradkar, Coach, Mumbai cricket association, Dr. Jaydeep Mirashi, General Secretary of our Sanstha, The Prize distribution function was held on 12the Sept., 2007 at 3.00 p.m. Attractive trophies and certificate (for boys and girls) were given to the winners of the tournament by the Chief Guest Dr. Pramod N. Pabrekar, Director of Students Welfare, University of Mumbai and the guest of honor, Dr. Jaydeep Mirashi, General Secretary of our Sanstha. All the participants were given certificates of participation during the ceremony. Our college was appreciated for providing the participants the best infrastructure facility (Complete A/C room) and refreshment throughout the tournament. 1) INTRA-COLLEGE SPORTS ACTIVITIES-2007-08 Encouraging sports activities plays an important role in al round development of the students A series of intra events are organized which help students to show their talents in sports and hence be selected to represent the college at inter college level. In the starting of the II term various indoor games like carrom, chess and Table Tennis were conducted. All these were held in college Gymkhana on 22nd and 23rd Nov., 2007 on knockout basis. More than 100 students had participated in these events. There was good response from girls also. Annual Sports Day: Annual Sports day was held on 3rd December 2007 at PDP. Peddar Road, Mumbai. The day began at 9.00 a.m. with welcome by Mr. Pol, Non Teaching Staff and active member of Sports Committee. Mr. Paradkar Cricket Coach for our college was the Chief Guest of the day. The Chief Guest explained to our students the importance of participation in sports at National and International Level. Prof. Raj Soshte, I/C Principal addressed to our students and spoke about the role of sports activities in National integrity. Events held on the day are 100 Meters running, 400 Meters running, 400 Meters Relay, Long Jump, Shot Put etc for both boys and girls. There was also 100 Meters race for teaching and non teaching staff members. All the staff members made active contribution in making the success of the sports day. At the end of the year all the winners were awarded with certificates. Grand prizes of best sports person- Male and best Sports person- Female, best sports representative were also given at annual Prize Distribution Function. Under Arm Box Tournament- January onwards is the time when sports activities in the college intensify with start of cricket .The tournament was held on 5th Jan.2008 at 09.00 a.m. at N.S.S. College Sports Ground. . 8 teams played group matches before moving to knockout rounds. As expected Cricket matches are ones every one wants to win their classes and the tournament was full of enjoyment. The winners Trophy went to F.Y.B.Com. C .The best bowler & the best batsman were also given trophies at Prize distribution function Student's Participation in intercollegiate competitions: Our students have successfully participated in intercollegiate sports events. PARTICIPATION IN INTERCOLLEGIATE TOURNAMENTS 1) Ms. Aparna Surve, Ms. Nirmal Tejal, Mr. Bade and Mr. Patil Mayuresh from F.Y.B.COM. have participated in intercollegiate Chess tournament on behalf of University of Mumbai held on 3rd and 4th August at Mulund College, Mumbai. Ms. Aparna Surve reached QF at zonal level. 2) Our students Mr. Sagar, Mr.Swapnil, Mr. Pritesh, Gaurish, Ratnakar and Subhash have participated in intercollegiate Table Tennis tournament held on 7th and 8th August 2007 at University Sports Pavilion, Marine Lines, Mumbai. 3) Mr. Salu D'souza and Mr. Benjamin D'souza from S.Y. B.Com participated and reached upto Quarter final at zonal level in university Badminton Singles tournament held on 8th - 10th October,2007 at University sports ground, Marine lines, Mumbai. 4) We feel happy mentioning our Volleyball team which became semifinalist at Zonal level by giving nail biting fight to their opponents. Tournament was held on 27th and 28th October 2007 at Khalsa College, Matunga on behalf of University of Mumbai. They were accompanied by our office staff Mr. Rajendra Pol and Volleyball coach Mr. Achrekar. 5) Team of 12 students participated in University Level Kabbaddi tournament held on 1st October 2007 at University Sports Pavillion. 6) Cricket team with Cricket coach Mr. Paradkar took part in Mumbai University intercollegiate Cricket tournament held on 30th October 2007 at Mumbai University Sports ground. Participation of Non teaching staff members in intercollegiate competitions: Mr. Deepak More, Sr Clerk from our college has participated & reached semifinals in chess & up to 2nd round in Carom at intercollegiate Cultural & Sports for non teaching staff members for colleges of Mumbai -region held from 26th Dec, 2007 to 4th Jan 2008 at Nagindas Khandwala College Malad. 32) INCENTIVES TO OUTSTANDING SPORTS PERSONS: Students are given T.A. & refreshment allowance for participation in intercollegiate & University sports activities. A group of F.Y.B.Com students have participated in 'Maths Quiz' an Inter- Collegiate competition based on F.Y.B.Com., Math’s and Stats Syllabus, held at J.B. Patel College Mumbai on 5th Jan 2008. Achievements in Co- and Extra curricular activities.: The college organized the various competition, in cultural activities at Intra- college level, such Book review, Rangoli, Mehendi, Personality, Debate, Essay writing, Singing Competition and many other activities. Inter-Collegiate Competition:- Our students have participated in various-inter collegiate competitions and won the following laurels for the glory of our esteemed institutions and are not lagging behind any one. Our students bagged 1st prize in “De Dhanadan” Antakhsari competition organized by Me Marathi TV Channel. They won 1st prize in” Shravanvedh” Inter collegiate dance competition organized by M.D. College – Sakal and Miti creation. Our students participated in youth competition organized by University of Mumbai for various solo and group events like mimicry, mine and mono acting, Skit, Hindi and Marathi one act play, quiz, poetry redaction, story writing, debate, elocution, folk dance and singing and for dance they were qualified for final round. Our students have also participated in Satya Sai Seva organization in poster making and essay writing competition. In “Harshollas”festival organized by Sydneham college our students participated in Dance and Rangoli competition and Sachin Joshi won the consolation prize for Rangoli competition. Our students had participated in “Kshitij” festival of Ruparel College under categories of folk dance, one act play, Rangoli, Mehendi and Singing competition. They were qualified for final round in folk dance competition and Prachi Surve bagged 2nd prize in Mehendi competition. Our students participated in Yuva festival if S.I.W.S. College under elocution, Rangoli, Debate and Mehendi competitions and in Rangoli competition Prachi Surve and Jayashri Awhad bagged 2nd prize and Prachi Surve won the 1st prize for Mehendi competition. Our students have also participated in Mantra Festival, Ratnam College, Bhandup in solo events of bridal make up, T shirts painting, Best out of waste, flower arrangement, Rangoli, Salad dressing, Greeting card making and pot decoration. In Maharshtra Utsav festival of Elphinstone college our students had participated in singing, folkdance, elocution, Mehendi, debt painting, Poetry recitation, fashion show, One act play, Lavani, mono acting, Mimicry, story telling , and charolya competitions and Prachi Surve again won consolation prize for Mehendi competition. JOSH 2008 Our college has organized Josh a high profile Inter collegiate event of dance and singing Our students had also participated in Yuva Chetana event of Chetana College in which our own ex students-Alumni members had organized the event and our students participated in the events like singing, Debate, elocution, essay etc. and our students Reshma Malwankar secured 2nd prize in Duet singing. Thus, our students were very active in the intra collegiate level competitions. Annual Function 2007-08 The Annual Function was organized on 12th January, 2008, Saturday at Marathi Sahitya Sangh Mandir- Charni Road at 8.00a.m. The Chief Guest for the function was Dr. V.N.Magare, Director, Board of College and University Development – University of Mumbai and the guest of honour was Shri. Ajay Vadhavkar, Actor of Marathi Films and serials. Our guest of prime importance was Late Shri. Rajabhau Mirashi, Chairman of NSS College who was not present because of his ill health. The function started with the inauguration lighting of the lamp and Ganesh Stavana. Flowers were offered to Maa Sarswati and our beloved late Smt. Shantabai Mirashi. The whole function was a beautiful manifestation of dance, drama, Music, fillers etc. It took lot of efforts of the cultural committee and student council, Members of teaching and non teaching staff and all gave their full cooperation under the guidance of I/C. Prin. Prof. Raj Soshte. Our source of inspiration Dr. Jaydeep Mirashi, General Secretary has always guided us throughout. Annual Prize Distribution Function 2007-08 Our Annual prize distribution function was organized on 9th February, 2008 at Janta Kendra Hall, Tardeo. Our Chief Guest for the function was Shri. Prakash Khandge, Director, Lokkala Academy, University of Mumbai, and guest of honour were Dr. Jaydeep Mirashi. Our guest of prime importance late Shri. Rajabhau Mirashi was not present because of his ill health. The programme started with invocating the presence of God as a sign of our culture and humility. Flowers were offered to Maa Saraswati and our beloved Smt. Shantabai Mirashi madam. The guest were welcomed by bounquet, shawl, Srifal and a memento as a token our love and respect. The function was fully supported and handled by the members of teaching and non teaching staff with the cooperation and guidance of our hard working Prin. Prof. Raj Soshte. Prizes were given for various activities of the college like Sports Committee, Cultural Committee, N.S.S. W.D.C. and academic field and best student’s award. Best prizes were given for best students, best cultural volunteer, Best N.S.S. Leader, Best Sports and Best Library User. To encourage the participation of physically disabled students Best participant award was given to physically disabled student Joshi Kulashya.- F.Y.B.Com. 34) ACTIVITIES OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING UNIT: W.D.C. is guidance and counseling unit for the students and is active to solve problem not only of girls but also of male students. The teachers always make a point to address the students, discuss their problems & give valuable guidance. Students are always helped by both teaching & non teaching staff. 35) PLACEMENT SERVICES PROVIDED TO STUDENTS:- Placement Cell provides career and job opportunities to our students The Placement cell interacts with some Placement agencies, (mainly for vacation/part time jobs) professional organizations that need commerce graduates. During festivals teachers initiate discussions with students on value based learning in the context of the festivals. The teachers encourage students to reflect on the thought aspects of the celebrations. 38) LINKAGES DEVELOPED WITH NATIONAL / INTERNATIONAL, ACADEMIC RESEARCH BODIES:- The college has developed linkage with W.W.F. which is a part of international organization with Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) Mumbai. 39) ANY OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION THE INSTITUTION WISHES TO ADD:- Women Development Cell (WDC):- The college has constituted Women Development Cell (WDC), according to the guidelines provided by WDC of the University of Mumbai. The Principal will be the Ex-officio President of this Cell. The Women Development Cell conducted various competitions for the students like Poster making, Essay writing & Elocution and also organized a workshop on the topic 'YOGA - for Stress Management '. in order to create awareness among the students. Considering the requirements of girl students, representatives are appointed from among girl students in every class to enable girl students to bring their problems & grievances to the notice of the cell. The cell also worked hard to solve the grievances of girl students at the earliest. The Attendance Committee was active during the year. The University’s rules and regulation information relating to Attendance and Examination are given to students in time by circulating Notice in Classroom and by displaying on notice board time to time. The monthly Black list (Attendance) displayed on the notice board and defaulter students were strictly instructed to attend the regular lectures. Staff Welfare: Staff members are helped financially by our college management through “Smt. Shantabai Mirashi Employees Welfare Fund” to meet the financial requirement. There is also a credit cooperative society “NSS Karmachari Sahakari patpedhi Ltd” for the staff for small funds. Time flexibility is given to staff members who are perusing higher studies.
