Many countries have developed their own standards: • “Green Star” by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) • One Planet global initiative by WWF 30/07/2009 Private & Confidential 6 LEED in a nutshell Since its inception in 1998, LEED has grown to encompass over 14,000 projects in 50 US States and 30 countries and has become one of the most widely recognized green building programs It is an open membership and consensus based organization It provides a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable constructions and rating systems to assess and certify the “Green” status of a development. 30/07/2009 Private & Confidential 7 LEED in the UAE The Emirates Green Building Council (EGBC) http://www.emiratesgbc.org has appealed to contractors and developers to join the LEED Emirates pilot program in a drive to push sustainability on new buildings in the UAE.
