GCSE PHYSICAL EDUCATION YEAR 9 OPTIONS PRESENTATION Who should select this course? Those with a passion for sport Those who have an interest in the effects physical activity has on the body Those with a social and cultural view on sport in today’s society and the impact sport has on wider society Those interested in the reasons behind competitors cheating and the drive towards a culture of “winning at all cost” What will you learn? You will: Develop knowledge and practical skills in a range of physical activities Examine the effects of exercise and how training can improve performance Find ways to improve your own performance in a variety of roles Identify ways to develop and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle through participation in physical activity Appreciate the benefits of promoting “sport for all” How is the course made up? GCSE PE CONTROLLED PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT THEORY 48% 12% 40% Practical 48% Section 1: Four practical performances in the role of either player/participant, coach or official You can achieve 48% of the marks from four performances, two of which may be in the role of a coach or official Controlled Assessment Coursework – 12% Section 2 This is worth 12% of the marks and should include planning, performing and evaluating a Personal Exercise Programme. Students adopt the role of a Personal Trainer and plan a 6 week program to improve a specific area of fitness identified by the student. Students will also have to analyse their own and others performance and suggest appropriate strategies to improve overall performance. Theory 40% Examination: This is externally assessed through a written examination paper of 1 hour and 30 minutes. This will contribute a maximum of 40% towards your total mark What can you do after you’ve completed the course Ideal preparation for the A Level Physical Education BTEC Firsts and Nationals in Sport or Sport and Exercise Sciences Course develops transferable skills and key skills that employers are looking for and can lead to a wide variety of employment opportunities. This can include: Recreational management Leisure activities Coaching Officiating Fitness industry Armed forces Civil Service Level 2 BTEC Option As a department we understand the certain pupils enjoy sport however struggle with exams, therefore all pupils selecting GCSE PE will have an option of doing a BTEC Level 2 in Sport which is 100% coursework. This option is only available at the end of Year 10 once assessment has been made regarding progress on the GCSE PE course. SPORT DON’T JUST PLAY IT LEARN IT!
