Standards and Benchmarks Music Grade 5 Standard 1. Sings, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. Mus 5.1.1 Sings in simple harmony, demonstrating beginning choral behaviors and skills in group singing. Mus 5.1.2 Sings melodies within the range of an octave and a half. Mus 5.1.3 Responds to conducting cues indicating musical expression and phrasing. Standard 2. Performs on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. Mus 5.2.1 Maintains a melodic pattern independently within the diatonic scale. Mus 5.2.2 Echoes and performs rhythmic and melodic patterns in duple and triple meter with body percussion and classroom instruments. Mus 5.2.3 Echoes and performs melodies and melodic patterns within the octave scale on barred instruments. Mus 5.2.4 Performs I, IV and V or V7 chords to accompany a three-chord melody with classroom instruments. Mus 5.2.5 Performs songs within the octave scale on a basic wind instrument, for example, the recorder. Standard 3. Responds to music with movement. Mus 5.5.1 Reads, performs, and notates simple rhythmic patterns (using sixteenth notes, eighth notes, eighth rests, quarter notes, quarter rests, half notes, dotted half notes, whole notes and whole rests) in duple and triple meter from traditional notation. Mus 4.5.2 Reads, performs, and notates melodic patterns using an octave scale on the treble clef from traditional notation. Mus 5.5.3 Reads, performs, and notates notes on the bass clef from traditional notation. Mus 5.5.4 Identifies and describes theme and variations form. Mus 5.5.5 Identifies the function of the bottom number of a meter signature. Standard 6. Listens to, analyzes, and describes music. Mus 5.6.1 Identifies and distinguishes voices: soprano, alto, tenor, bass, in a variety of listening examples. Mus 5.6.2 Identifies instruments when presented visually and aurally, including instruments from other cultures. Mus 5.6.3 Identifies instrumental ensembles when presented visually and aurally. Mus 5.6.4 Describes specific music characteristics using appropriate vocabulary (meter, tonality, style). Standard 7. Evaluates music and music performances. Mus 5.7.1 Evaluates one’s own and others’ performances and describes what was successful and what should be changed to adjust accordingly. Mus 5.7.2 Evaluates a composition or performance using specific characteristics (for example: pitch and tone) Standard 8. Exhibits respect for the contributions of self and others in a music setting. Mus 5.8.1 Contributes to a group effort of making music. Mus 5.8.2 Participates in music activities that involve sharing, taking turns, and other ways of demonstrating good citizenship. Mus 5.8.3 Demonstrates appropriate audience behavior in such settings as the classroom and school performances. Standard 9.
