the newsletter of Trinity Episcopal Church
July/August 2011
Anglican Saints
One of the ways The Episcopal Church is distinguished from Protestant churches
is that we (along with the Roman Catholic Church) use a church calendar that honors
saints and various events on the dates traditionally associated with them. We do
this because it is an aspect of Roman Catholicism we want to preserve (although we
consider Christ – and not the saints – as our only mediator and advocate), in that we
honor our tradition and their service by remembering their names, dates, and deeds.
In a culture that pays little attention to our nation’s history, let alone the history
of other countries, our Church is met with yet another reproof that we are behind the
times and out of step with what’s happening now. Other Christian churches seem
more attuned to the beat pulsating through the arteries and capillaries of our national
body. The conventional advice is that we need to be more accommodating to a culture
that derives its sustenance from entertainment rather than education. Average Sunday attendance and rev-
enues would seem to prove the point.
In Christianity, the question is always: “Who is Jesus?” In the Church, the question is always: “Who are we?”
If we want to imitate the churches that are the standard for “success” in their ability to incorporate entertain-
ment in their worship services, we can. Nothing is stopping us, because we decide who we are. But if we do
bend on this point, then we must ask: If that’s who we are, at what cost? Is it worth it, and would we make
this same kind of compromise in our personal lives – especially with our children?
I want my children to mature, not only in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ, but with an appreciation
and gratitude for all the saints - sacred and secular - by remembering the ir names, dates, and deeds. For
the record, in July and August, we’ll celebrate: St. Mary Magdalene; Harriet Beecher Stowe; St. James and St.
Bartholomew, Apostles; J. S. Bach; the Transfiguration of our Lord; Florence Nightingale; St. Mary the Virgin;
John Bunyan; William Wilberforce; and our Independence Day, among many other saints and holy days.
“O blest communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.
Alleluia, alleluia!

Music at Trinity
Trinity Episcopal Church and American Airlines present Summerfest 2011 Concert – July 28
On Thursday, 28 July at 7:30 pm, Trinity will host the Remenyi Ede Chamber Ensemble joined by musicians of the
Symphony of the Americas. The concert is a fundraiser for the Cultural Council of Indian River Country, a organization
dedicated to “nurturing a cooperative environment in which cultural and educational organizations and individuals may
thrive and thereby enrich the quality of life in Indian River County for all residents and visitors.” Trinity is a member of
the Cultural Council and enjoys its cooperation in advertising upcoming musical events as well as networking with other
musical organizations in Indian River County.
The concert will host the Remenyi Ede Chamber Orchestra, founded in Miskolc, Hungary in 1981. The orchestra has
concertized extensively in Europe, the Far East, and the U.S.A. In addition, the concert will feature violinist Laszlo Pap, a
graduate of the renowned Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest. In addition to serving as Concertmaster for the Symphony of
the Americas Summerfest, Pap has served as the Concertmaster for the Palm Beach Opera and Palm Beach Pops, Associate
Concertmaster for the Symphony of the Americas, and First Violin of the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra.
The concert program will feature the Concerto for Four Violins, Cello and Strings (RV 580) by Antonio Vivaldi, the
Divertimento in D (K 136) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the captivating “Meditation” from Thaïs by Jules Massenet.
Other programmed works include early music for violin by Vitali and Boccherini and the Contrabajeando and Libertango
by Argentine tango composer Ástor Piazolla. The program concludes with the Divertimento No. 1, an exciting work by
composer Leo Weiner, who captures the soundscape of his Hungarian homeland – and that of the Remenyi Ede Chamber
Orchestra.
Tickets are available through the Cultural Council of Indian River County (772.770.4857) or at the door. Tickets cost
$15.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door.
A “Meet the Artists” social will be held at 6:30 in the Trinity Episcopal Great Hall. Light refreshments will be served.
Patrons will have the opportunity to converse with the program artists from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. prior to the start of the
concert at 7:30 pm.
Please come and support the important work of the Cultural Council, and encourage your friends to do the same!
