Abstract
It is widely believed that the next generation of science will be significantly more proactive in
helping users achieve their goals than those which currently exist. The objective is to develop
Mobile Based Comprehensive Security System for the Motor Vehicles. There is good reason for
car owners to take precautions when approaching their cars in a public parking lot, especially if
they are alone at night.
So, decided to follow a research which is enabling security system through mobile phones. The
method comprises receiving a signal in to a mobile phone installing in the vehicle, determining
that a thief has been switch on the car. By having that signal, the mobile phone gives a call to
owner’s mobile phone.
Then the owner can identify that there is an unauthorized access. Then the owner ring back to the
mobile phone, which is installed in the car. After receiving that call the engine gets stopped and
further not running. If the owner did not realize any alert comes from that mobile phone, the
mobile phone continuously gives calls until it gets the respond from the owner.

1.1 Problems to be addressed

It is widely believed that the next generation of science will be significantly more proactive in
helping users achieve their goals than those which currently exist. The objective of the team is to
develop Mobile Based Comprehensive Security System for the Motor Vehicles. There is good
reason for car owners to take precautions when approaching their cars in a public parking lot,
especially if they are alone at night.

So main problems arise when developing the system were,.

 The vehicle owner could able to switch off the motor vehicle from any distant.
 System should support to saves time and reduces risk to human works in difficult
        circumstances.
 System should provides vehicle security, allowing immediate response in case of vehicle
theft, provide vehicle security, using modern technology which is providing user
friendliness and improve the optimum usage of recourses and minimize time spending to
        detect the theft.

To identify unauthorized situation, system uses a mobile phone installed in the secret place of the
vehicle. When person trying to switch on the motor vehicle, the ignition process will generate an
electronic signal to that mobile phone. For the process, it will use a micro controller. Then the
mobile phone installed in the motor vehicle, will generate a call to the owner’s mobile phone to
let owner, there is an unauthorized access.
It is also capable of avoiding carry out the vehicle. Because after having a notification, the
owner will call back to the mobile phone which is installed in the motor vehicle. After having
that call, the engine will stop.
1.2 Background Context

Mobile phone based comprehensive security system for motor vehicles provide a vehicle security
system. This allows tracing the vehicles in case of vehicle theft. The Mobile phone
communicates with owner. Preferably, the system provides vehicle theft and intrusion protection
using a circuit linked to the mobile phone.
If someone (theft) opens the vehicle door then mobile unit installed in hidden location in vehicle
automatically generates the call to the owner’s mobile phone along with any automatic manually
entered request give the call.
The project is worth doing because it gives us lots of knowledge and information about the
security system which is based on the mobile phone. As we are in mobile age it also easy to
handle because it is functioned through two mobile phones.
The information transmitted on the mobile phone communication link includes the information
describing the event or condition. According to another aspect of the invention, there is a
provided mobile unit for a vehicle security system, responsive to call generated system.
Where as in the owner input device, it includes a keypad containing keys whose closure is
detected by the mobile phone and the mobile phone generated a call corresponding to the
particular number the owner has specified.
If the owner identifies unauthorized person was going to theft the vehicle, then owner gives a
call to the mobile unit controller after that vehicle was automatically switch off the engine.
There is no other research done on this particular topic before. Therefore this project, based on
developing mobile application in J2me and it is connected to the micro controllers, and UML
designs is targeted. There may be so many projects done on this particular topic, but we are
aiming at Mobile phone based comprehensive security system for motor vehicles.
1.3 Research Gap

There are several motor vehicle security systems such as locking doors on a vehicle, an alarm
system with a blinking red light and an invisible locking system. But they are not reliable,
technological and control as proposed system. The development team is feasible of developing a
new solution, with new technologies, which will be competitive to other products.
The team’s aim was developing a mobile phone based security system for motor vehicles to
provide a system which will increase the security. The invention generally comprises a
notification from a mobile phone which is hidden in a secret place in the motor vehicle, to the
vehicle owner’s mobile phone. Then the owner can identify that there is an unauthorized access.
Then the owner response back to the mobile phone, which is installed in the vehicle. After
receiving that respond the engine stop automatically and does not run thereafter. It can do only
the vehicle owner’s mobile phone.

1.4 Research Questions

When considering the significant aspect of the specific project it will address the many issues
that will not foregone the consideration before and it will focused the several methods that has
been forgotten by the other related solutions. For an example if the team consider other available
products in the market, they can address several key issues that will come to the scenario with
there proposed solution.
In the case of marketing interaction, this solution running in full float with compare to other
existing solutions. The system mainly interacts with the mobile phone.
Therefore compeering to other competition applications in the market, they can thoroughly
emphasize that no other similar solution created in Sri Lanka. Team members decided to do
further developments and improvements of product, when they achieved there main goals.
In the implementation stages of the security system, team had several problems to over-come and
research constraints to follow up. In order to develop the system functions that work correctly
and accurate team should take several research constraints in developing this system.
The project is mainly based on the hardware. The main part of the project is an electronic circuit.
It is new thing for the team, because they are not much familiar with electronic science. So they
had to put total concentrate on that and they had to study Electronic science.
In that cases there are some considerable problems occur during the design, develop and testing
phases. Main problems are,
 Problem regarding to the hardware designing
 Problem regarding to PIC electronic circuit designing.
 Problem regarding the call generated in the two mobile phones.

According those problems team has different mechanism to optimize those issues. Design
restrictions are a precious commodity in users work. Users should cherish them, as they enable
user to focus them efforts. Consider a multitude of technical, economic, social, environmental,
and political restrictions when designing a product. There must be clear evidence in project that
addressed to the restrictions that is relevant to project. Main design restrictions relevant to
project are,

- Mobile device memory, communication interfaces and positioning support.

- Operating system for mobile devices and their customization potential.

- Development platforms supporting real-time.

Since a security system, product should work on proper quality result on time. It will directly
affect to the security of motor vehicle. If vehicle owner does not getting relevant call from the
mobile phone hidden in the motor vehicle, then it will cause to hijack motor vehicle. Therefore
other than functional requirements following non functional requirements are essential.

Reliability is the “consistency” or “repeatability” of measures. The system should be reliable and
should not fail or corrupt at any time. It has to do with the quality of measurement. When the
battery of mobile phone hidden in the motor vehicle gets weak, the battery should recharge
manually or automatically.
It should not take much time to generate a call from the hidden phone, when an unauthorized
person access to the motor vehicle. Also it should not take much time to stop the engine when
owner call back to the vehicle. If the system does not recognize an authorized user as a valid user
or if it is recognized an unauthorized user as a valid user, then it should be prevent. Mean cross
over error rates should be minimized. It must decrease errors to keep reliability.

One of the main non functional requirements for the system is Availability. That means, at the
time of need of the security system, it should be ready to provide service. For fulfill that
requirement it is very useful to test and update continuously.

Owner can not distinguish or denote hijacking can happen surely in this particular time period.
There for the system should available each and every time to fulfill that requirement.

The above mentioned facts are valuable research questions arise in the development of current
state of the project. Since this project covers up to 95% now, more problems cover. Remain 5%
cover whole product, scope coverage and other thing. From all those techniques it helps to avoid
getting defects at the last moments and for better application product. Since the arising
restrictions are mentioned, also need to find the solutions
2. Addressing the Literature

There are several motor vehicle security systems in the society. By analyzing those systems,
team members decided to add some new features to there proposed system. Still there are not any
systems directly based on the mobile phones. But there are security systems based on GPS and
satellite. It is be very helpful to study those systems to implement new product.
 Satellite- and cellular-based mobile two-way communication tracking systems for
commercial motor vehicles wirelessly emit, transmit, and receive information to track
vehicles and facilitate communications between drivers and carrier personnel.
Wireless mobile communications tracking systems use satellite-tracking Global
Positioning System (GPS) technology for vehicle location information, as well as satellite
and/or cellular communications technologies for two-way communication. Satellite-based
mobile communications systems use a network of orbiting satellites to provide two-way
communication coverage between a carrier and its assets, while cellular-based systems
utilize a land-based or terrestrial network of cellular base stations/towers. Some systems
utilize a combination of satellite and cellular communications by automatically selecting
the lower-cost cellular network first and seamlessly switching to the satellite network
when coverage is needed in remote areas.

 Using mobile communications tracking systems, drivers, dispatchers, and fleet managers
can easily communicate during daily operations and emergencies. These systems allow
on-site carrier personnel to efficiently send messages, such as load assignments, directly
to the drivers in near-real-time. Then, drivers can send messages to dispatchers and
respond with current information, such as arrivals and departures.
By wirelessly communicating routing information, specific routes can be pre-determined
and last minute route changes can be conveyed to drivers to improve delivery times. In
addition the geo-fencing feature provides alerts to the carrier when a vehicle departs from
a set route for appropriate action to be taken.
 The systems can provide on-site carrier personnel with vehicle location information, such
as latitude, longitude, and distance from cities, towns, and landmarks. Some systems
display the last known locations and position history information of vehicles. As a result,
dispatchers know when vehicles are expected to arrive at destinations, and they can relay
this information to their customers. By assessing vehicle locations along with operating
parameters, carriers can track driver and vehicle performance to conduct more efficient
    and safe operations.

 Car theft not only causes trauma and cost to the individual but to the whole community.
Stolen cars can be used to commit other, more serious crime such as armed robbery or
house burglaries. The following anti-theft devices are currently available to help owner
    secures owner’s motor vehicle.
                Engine immobilizer
                Ignition shield
                Fuel cut-out switch
 Ultrasonic motion sensor (detects movement inside the car)
                Glass etching detector
                Steering wheel lock
                Hand break lock
                Transmission lock
                Wheel lock
                Battery isolator
Methodology

3.1 What is a vehicle security system?

Security is the protection of a person, property or organization from an attack. There are people
who have distorted motivations to perform such attacks. The types of protection include
prevention, response and pre-emptive attacks.

Vehicle security describes measures that prevent or detect attackers from accessing a motor
vehicle. It can be as simple as a locked door or as elaborate as multiple layers of armed guard
posts.

Security of a motor vehicle in the early days was not as challenging as today because vehicles
were mostly mainframes that were locked away in safety places such as garages and only a
handful of people knew how to handle them. The primary reason a person would steal a vehicle
or its contents are for personal gain. In many cases, vehicles are stolen by professional thieves
who then sell the vehicles. Finally, there are those who steal a vehicle for fun and personal
entertainment.

Vehicles are often broken into for things inside, such as briefcases, valet or anything else in
view. High priced car radios are a hot item. These things may be sold, but often they are for
person to be used by the thief.

Ways to encourage theft are to leave keys in the ignition, leave the doors unlocked, park in a
secluded area in a bad part of town, and leaving something of value in plain view inside the
automobile.

The recent fad of the sport utility vehicle makes it difficult to hide anything, since such a vehicle
does not have a trunk. Usually vehicles are stolen or broken into for financial gain of the thief.
Locks and other devices can discourage theft. Alarm systems are supposed to alert the police to
respond, but in many cases they do not work well. Discouraging theft is the best route to take.
3.2 Different Approaches

The vehicle registration and licensing system is receiving a lot of government attention and
undergoing change.

There has been some effort to improve the security of public car parking.

Locking the doors on a vehicle is not fail-safe, since many professional car thieves can use a
device to open the car. But it does discourage the casual thief.

An alarm system with a blinking red light will warn thieves not to bother. That is not to say the
vehicle still could not be broken into, but it would discourage most criminals.

An alarm system is supposed to alert the police to make a rapid response to stop a theft or even
to arrest the crook. Having an alarm is supposed to attract people to the scene of the crime.
Unfortunately, so many motor vehicle alarms go off, that people stop paying attention. It is not a
reliable approach.

A better device is the silent alarm that signals the police that a vehicle is being stolen. It gives off
a radio signal that allows the police to track and find the automobile and perhaps the thief.

An invisible locking system, such as one that will turn off the fuel supply, will not prevent your
vehicle from being stolen, but if does prevent it from being stolen for very long. The thief may
get only a few blocks away until the engine dies. The vehicle is then usually left in the street.
                          Figure 3.1 Different Approaches

3.3 The project Aim

This invention relates to security systems for the operators of motor vehicles and particularly to
such systems for increasing the security of such operator as they are approaching their parked
vehicles. Concern has been expressed by a substantial number of motor vehicle owners and
operators about their personal safety as they approach their parked vehicles, especially in lonely
areas of cities and in large parking lots of decks which afford hiding in places for a person
planning a robbery or some other personal criminal act.

The team’s aim is developing a mobile based security system for motor vehicles to provide a
system which will increase the security. The invention generally comprises a notification from a
mobile phone which is hidden in a secret place in the motor vehicle, to the vehicle owner’s
mobile phone. Then the owner can identify that there is an unauthorized access. Then the owner
response back to the mobile phone, which is placed in the vehicle. After receiving that respond
the engine stop automatically and does not run thereafter. If the owner does not realize any
notification comes from that mobile phone, the mobile phone continuously gives calls until it is
got a response the owner.

In case of a vehicle theft the vehicle can be tracked with the help of the service provider. The
service provider can track the location of the SIM which is placed inside the mobile phone which
is in the motor vehicle

In this proposed solution the following areas, were mainly considered:
 If an unknown person tries to switch on the car, then the system will inform the vehicle
       owner.
 The vehicle owner can switch off the motor vehicle from any distant.

3.4 Project planning

This system will be developed using the Iterative Waterfall Model. It is one of the main life cycle
models, which can be test each and every phase before going to the next phase be continuously.
The proposed project also must have to test each and every phase before going to the next phase.
Otherwise it is very difficult to develop the proposed project.
Using iterative waterfall model can reduce overall testing time and increase efficiency.
The following diagram shows each of the phases, extracted from the model steps that have been
carried out.

3.5 Overall Architecture

3.5.1 Resources to be requested for the project
Software Resources
 Micro C language for programming the Micro controller.
    Winpick800
 Ms Office to write the documentation of the project.
    Latex for the documents.
 Ms project to document the project.
Hardware Resources
    Mobile phone.
    SIM card.
    Micro Controller (16F84A)
    Electronic circuit devices

3.5.2 Generate a call to a predefined number

When the motor vehicle is switched on, it will generate an electric current. That generated
current will go to the electronic circuit. An out put pin of micro controller and a button of the
mobile phone are connected through wires. After receiving the input signal to the
microcontroller, it will sends a signal to the mobile phone’s button with a 1000ms delay through
the above mentioned pin. This delayed signal can use to generate a call using the speed dialing
method which is coming with the mobile phone’s operating system. Owner can assign his mobile
phone number to speed dial to that particular button. That is a first step to identify an electronic
signal.

                                            Figure 3.3
When the system identifies the input electronic signal, it will direct to the microcontroller. Then
the microcontroller sends a signal to the mobile phone’s button with 1000ms delay. The phone
use that signal to generate a call.

Figure 3.4

3.

                           5.3 Electronic circuit

When starts the motor vehicle, the vehicle’s battery will generate 12v electrical current.
Then that electrical current goes to a regulator through a relay. The relay is on its default on
state. After get that 12v electrical signal from the above mentioned regulator, the regulator
reduce that 12v electrical current to 5v and sends to the microcontroller.
When the mobile phone gets a receiving call, the mobile phone’s speaker generates a small
electrical signal. That small signal goes to op-amp (Operational Amplifier) and op-amp increases
that small voltage to 5v and sends it to the microcontroller.
After get 5v from op-amp the microcontroller forward an electrical current to the relay which is
on its default on state. After get an electrical current from the microcontroller the relay comes to
its off state.

3.5.4 PIC Programming
Micro controller is a device which integrates a number of the components of a microprocessor
system onto a single microchip. When they come out of production most integrated circuits are
ready to be built into a device which is not the case with microcontrollers. In order to "make" a
microcontroller perform a task, it exactly what to do, or in other words we must write the
program microcontroller will execute.
Micro controller will use to control the electronic circuit. This part is the main part in the
electronic circuit. For the proposed project the 16F84A micro controller is decided to use. PIC
16F84A - An 18 pin chip. Micro C language is use to program the micro controller.

3.6 Main Functions of the system

3.6.1Ignition the vehicle
When unauthorized person try to access the owner vehicle the hidden phone will generate
the signal to electric circuit. Then the electronic circuit sends a signal to the mobile phone
to generate a call to the owner’s mobile phone.

When the owner wants to start the motor vehicle the owner able to switch off the security
system and start the motor vehicle.
3.6.2 Identify the vehicle ignition.

When some one starts the motor vehicle without switch off the security system, the
system identify that is an unauthorized person going to starts the motor vehicle. Then the
system informs about an unauthorized access to the vehicle owner by giving a call to the
       owner’s mobile phone.

3.7 Software System Attributes
Since a security system, product should work on proper quality result on time. It will directly
affect to the security of motor vehicle. If vehicle owner does not getting relevant call from the
mobile phone hidden in the motor vehicle, then it will cause to hijack motor vehicle. Therefore
other than functional requirements, following non functional requirements are essential.

3.7.1 Reliability
Reliability is the “consistency” or “repeatability” of measures. The system should be reliable and
should not fail or corrupt at any time. It has to do with the quality of measurement. When the
battery of mobile phone hidden in the motor vehicle gets weak, the battery should recharge
manually or automatically. It should not take much time to generate a call from the hidden
phone, when an unauthorized person access to the motor vehicle. Also it should not take much
time to stop the engine when owner call back to the vehicle. If the system does not recognize an
authorized user as a valid user or if it is recognized an unauthorized user as a valid user, then it
should be prevent. Mean cross over error rates should be minimized. It must decrease errors to
keep reliability.

3.7.2 Availability
One of the main non functional requirements for the system is Availability. That means, at the
time of need of the security system, it should be ready to provide service. For fulfill that
requirement it is very useful to test and update continuously.
Owner can not distinguish or denote hijacking can happen surely in this particular time period.
There for the system should available each and every time to fulfill that requirement.

3.7.3 Security
Project team members’ special consideration goes to the security of the system. Security is most
important factor of the system scope. There should be separate security issues to the system. If an
unauthorized person has ability to change the specific telephone number installed in the mobile
phone hidden in the motor vehicle, it will directly affect to security of the motor vehicle.
Authorization is done using a DIP switches, for the mobile phone. Only a vehicle owner has
permission to access the DIP switches.

3.7.4 Maintainability
In considering of maintainability team members have focused there attention in several possible
occurrence. The product has electronics devices such as circuits, hardware devices like a mobile
phone and a many wires. So those devices should maintain properly. Otherwise availability and
reliability will decrease.
Chapter 4
Evidence and Discussions
Evidence plays an important role in any software and hardware product. Because from that end
user or the non involvement bodies for the project development can get the idea of final outputs
and the quality of the final product. This verifies the final output verification and the validation.
Discussions in a project are the test cases and the evidence carrying out how to get the correct
output by following those.
Evidence support to prove main concept of the whole project. Discussions help for user to get
idea about the project and for the future developments. Evidence can be collected from different
ways throughout the development life cycle. According to the evidence, discussions can be
performs for the better outputs .In any software and hardware product it can be consists of many
bug or less number of bugs before release or after release of the product to the market. That is the
nature of the software industry. There is no software which has no bugs or on defects. That is
why need the evidence and discussions, to minimize the bug of the product before releasing it to
the market.
Better software product has a minimum number of bugs and those bugs are not affecting to the
main product of the project .End user satisfaction is one of the goals in any software product and
the product should be fit for the user also. Otherwise both the parties are fails. To accomplish the
above target evidence and the discussions are very helpful. Discussions or the test cases can be
set at different phases in the software life cycle. The next coming paragraphs consist of more
details about the discussions which are relevant to this project and the evidence or the outputs.
4.1 Evidence

Evidence carryout the test cases of a project. According to the main concept of project, major
parts are,

              Pic programming
 Design and develop the Electronic circuit.

So need to test those major pats individually. For that, it can be uses unit testing or functional
testing. Then need to check after integration of these three units. For that, can uses integration
testing. Finally need to test whole system at once, according to check whether the system gives
the outputs correctly and so on. At here use the system testing. These are the basic test cases
follow up by any software product.

Test case Test case Test Test Expected Actual Result Pass/Fail
number name data Description output result
4.2 Discussions

The discussion is basically focused on the problem that we faced during the research and the
design and the implementation of the software. This section also describes how the successful
achievements were gained.
Discussion of this project supports for the user to understand the concept behind this project
implementation. Discussion carrying the output of the final implementation according to the
methodologies applies to gain those out comes. According to this project outcomes can be
viewed under following major units.

 Restricts the unauthorized access of motor vehicle.
    Generate call to owner’s mobile p.
 Outputs of continually one give the ring cut to owner’s mobile phone.
 Outputs of stop the ignition.
Chapter 5
Conclusion

In carrying out this project team has implemented the whole system under two major units; those
are the Pic programming part and the electronic circuit. Before stating the implementation did lot
of background studies, surfing internet and referring books which are more relevant to the main
concept. From the feasibility studying team members identify the limitations and scope of the
project in the real world environment.
The project will form a sophisticated working environment uncommon to most of the security
system.
The project, “Mobile phone based comprehensive security for motor vehicle“as the term
implies will automate their main functions of the security system. The security system for all the
motor vehicles. With the increase in the number of customer project requests, Motor Vehicle
Company has failed to achieve their targets. Having experienced the above-mentioned
shortcomings, the Project Team probed into the current infrastructure already available in the car
security system, to add some high profile features to the security system. Achievement of
supervised targets with the development of the mobile phone based comprehensive security for
motor vehicle. As a conclusion the members of the project group hope the motor vehicle security
system will make the maximum throughout the system once deployed.

The main focus of this project was to install a security system of the mobile phone based security
system for motor vehicle. This system can be used to improve the quality of processing functions
by improving optimum usage of resources, minimizing waste of owner’s idle time eliminating
the need for personal gatherings for discussions. The mobile phone based comprehensive system
will make the maximum usage of the security for the motor vehicle.
These are most relevant suggestions for future development and improvement of this concept.
These proposals help for continuous development and better improvement of this concept. Any
problems that were encountered, with regard to the project were discussed with project
supervisor and a decision was taken on how to solve them.
All the team members were active and accomplished the specific tasks that were handed down to
them. This project gave them the opportunity of applying the knowledge learnt in fields of study
and to learnt new things such as hardware( electronic circuit development, PIC programming)
field. Team sincerely believes that this project proposal will benefit all stakeholders concerned.
As a conclusion the nature of this project will form the innovative turning point for the security
for a motor vehicle.
