Energy transfers 14

Power 16 You will need to find appliances around your home.
You will need to find out data from the school’s
Energy efficiency 10
energy efficiency poster near reception at school.
Batteries 9 You may need a calculator.

Light bulbs 28 You may want to type up your letter on a computer.
Danger! Danger!

For each picture, identify the hazards and any precautions you should take to keep safe.

Energy Transfers
All of these appliances transfer electrical energy into another form of energy.
Unfortunately, sometimes the energy is dissipated or wasted. For each appliance identify
the useful forms of energy and any ways in which the energy is dissipated.
Appliance Useful energy Dissipated energy

toaster

Light bulb

Lift

Drill

Microwave

Television

Power
Power tells you how quickly energy is transferred. It is measured in Watts or W. Look at
this label. We have found out the maximum power it uses. Remember 1 kW = 1000 W.

1300 W
or 1.3 kW

Find 5 of these appliances in your house and write down their maximum power. Please
make sure they are unplugged and safe to use.

hairdryer, toaster, games console, straighteners, kettle (make sure it is empty!)
radio, vacuum cleaner, electric drill, iron or food mixer.

Electrical Appliance Power / W

Put them in order from most powerful to least powerful.

Why do you think this is? Is there a link between the type of energy into which they are
transferring the electrical energy?

[16]
Energy efficiency
When you buy electrical appliances or even houses, you will find a sticker like this one that
tells you how efficient it is. The school has its own. It is on display near reception.

What letter is the school building’s energy
efficiency at the moment?

………

What is the main heating fuel?

………………………………………

What is the total useful floor area?

……… m2

What is the annual energy use for heating?

……… kWh/m2/year

What is the annual energy use for electricity?

……… kWh/m2/year

Does the school building use more or less than is
typical?

…………….

What percentage of the energy comes from
renewables?

………%

Suggest three ways the school building could be made more energy efficient.

Batteries
Ant and Dec needs 4 AA batteries for their Wii remotes. They use it for 5 hours a day.
They have a choice of 3 makes of battery.

Rechargeable
Supermarket value Evercell batteries
Battery type batteries
(with a charger)

Cost of a 4 pack £1.80 £3.40 £20.00

Lifetime 40 hours 250 hours 20 hours

How many days will each battery last for Ant and Dec?

Supermarket value………………….

Evercell …………………..

Rechargeable (for one charge)…………………..

For how many hours will Ant and Dec use the Wii in a year (365 days)?

Circle the number of packs of supermarket value batteries they will have to buy each year:

8 46 53 72 203

How much will this cost?

How many Evercell batteries will they have to buy each year?

8 46 53 72 203

How much will this cost?

What is the cheapest over a year of the 3 options? (Remember the rechargeable batteries
had a one-off cost of £20.00)

Read the information on the trump cards. For each card, put the number in the correct
column of the table.

[6]
Which do you think is the most important argument for energy efficient lightbulbs?

Why?

[2]
Which do you think is the most important argument against energy efficient lightbulbs?

Why?

[2]
A local council wants to reduce its carbon footprint. They want to know if you think they
should make it compulsory for everyone to use energy efficient bulbs.

Write a formal letter explaining your opinion. Don’t forget to use the correct scientific
words. Structure your paragraphs in the following way:
Introduction to explain the problem
Reasons for making energy efficient light bulbs compulsory
Reasons for not making energy efficient light bulbs compulsory

You can do this on computer or on the following page.
