The show begins previews on Thursday, April 7, 2011 and will close on Saturday, May 7, 2011. The Roads to Home begins with the one-act play, A Nightingale, set in Houston in April of 1924 with Mabel Votaugh, a Harrison transplant, beginning her morning chores and anticipating an unannounced visit of Annie Gayle Long, an acquaintance from Harrison who is also making her home in Houston. One of Mabel’s neighbors, Vonnie Hayhurst, stops by to tell Mabel about her recent visit to her hometown, Monroe, Louisi- ana. Vonnie’s story about her trip is interrupted by Annie’s arrival, her disturbing recollection of her family’s tragic history in Harrison, and pleas from her husband, Mr. Long, for her to “stay home and rest so you can get well”. In The Dearest of Friends, Vonnie seeks comfort from Mabel after discovering her husband, Eddie Hayhurst, is having an affair with a woman he met on a train trip to Harrison. Jack Votaugh, Mabel’s normally stoic husband and Eddie’s co-worker, offers Vonnie the simplest advice, “He’ll get over it.” This piece ends with Spring Dance, four years later in Austin. Annie lives in an asylum with fellow Harrison residents, Dave Dushon and Greene Hamilton. Although Annie loves the ambience of the dance, she refuses to dance with anyone other than her husband. Instead, she chats with fellow patient, Cecil Henry. Cecil is upset by his wife’s request for a divorce. Anxious to see her own family, Annie implores Greene Hamilton to give a message to her mother when he visits his family in Harrison. After reading a letter from Dave Dushon’s mother, Annie’s anxiety about her marriage, her family, and her future grows until she can only cope by retreating into fantasy, defiantly resolving, “I’ll not permit thoughts like that, for then I’ll despair and never get well and we want to get well don’t we – for the sake of our loved ones and ourselves.” The Roads to Home was first presented by the Manhatten Punch Line theatre, Inc., in association with Indian Falls Productions, at the Man- hattan Punch Line Theatre in New York City on March 25, 1982. Directed by Calvin Skaggs, this production included B. Hallie Foote, Hor- ton Foote’s daughter, playing Annie Gayle Long. Language of Angels begins on Friday, May 6, 2011 and will close on Sunday, June 5, 2011. “God appears & God is Light/To those poor Souls who dwell in Night/ But does a Human Form Display/To those who Dwell in Realms of Day.” -- From William Blake’s Auguries of Innocence “God does no deal directly with man. It is by means of spirits that all inter- course between God and man, both in waking life and in sleep, is carried on. They are celestial beings in their essence. They go by many and diverse names. Their forms are as plentiful as the languages of man.” – Allison in Language of Angels. What happened to Celie? No one really knows, not even her friends Kendra, Allison, Danielle, Michael, Seth, Billy, and JB. They were all with her in those deep, dark caves in North Carolina where teenagers test their own mortality with a dangerous combination of drugs, alcohol, and the blackest of natural mazes. After one long night in the caves, everyone emerged except Celie and ever since, people claim to hear a clear singing voice of a girl coming from those caves. Life is never the same for Celie’s friends. Even as time melts memories, all of them are haunted by two unfathomable ghosts: brokenhearted regret and inexorable loneliness. A quiet, unassuming individual, yet an extremely gifted musician who was more than just an accompanist for a local chorus…..he is the connection between the Children’s and Youth Choruses of Collin County and the county of Japan. Tom Yamanaka, af- fectionately known as Mr. Tom, shared his mu- sic for a brief time with the boys and girls of Collin County and now he is helping these Cho- ruses share their musical message of hope to the children and their families of Japan. Monday evening, May 9th a concert entitled, “Songs of Heritage and Hope,” will be presented at 7:00 PM at the Custer Road United Methodist Church, 6601 Custer Road in Plano. The first portion of the concert will be songs of our American folk heritage. The second portion of the concert is songs of hope, based on Spirituals, and will be dedicated to the children and families in Japan. Just as Mr. Tom shared his music with this chorus, now the chorus is sharing their songs of hope with the children of Japan who find themselves in dire circumstances following the earthquake and tsu- nami. With the help of Mr. Tom, the concert will be videotaped, and Japanese subtitles will be up- loaded and distributed through the various social media networking used by the residents of Japan. “As I sat and watched the horrific video footage of entire towns being swept away by the tsunami, I felt so helpless,” said Russ Porter, Executive Director of the Chorus. “Immediately, I wondered how the Chorus might be a part of something that could bring inspiration and comfort to such a horren- dous situation. These people need hope and what better way to do that than through the universal language of music.” Free admission to this concert is provided for school-age children. Tickets for adults may be purchased at the door for $10.00. Additional donations are welcome and can be desig- nated to help cover the expenses of producing the music video for the children of Japan. This concert is funded in part by the City of Plano. Artistic Director of the Children’s Chorus of Collin County is Janie Oliver, who also conducts the singers in grades 4-6. A newly added Youth Chorus of Collin County is offered for middle school and high school singers, conducted by Tammy Kotara. Auditions for the 2011-2012 Chorus year will be held Saturday, May 14. For more information, contact the Chorus office at 972-618- 4536 or office@ChildrensChorusofCollinCounty.org.
