Onstage at Theatre Three: The Roads to Home
Theatre Three’s Subscription Season continues with Horton Foote’s The Roads to Home, a work con-
sisting of three one-act plays, A Nightingale, The Dearest of Friends, and Spring Dance. The show begins
previews on Thursday, April 7, 2011 and will close on Saturday, May 7, 2011.

The Roads to Home begins with the one-act play, A Nightingale, set in Houston in April of 1924 with Mabel
Votaugh, a Harrison transplant, beginning her morning chores and anticipating an unannounced visit of Annie
Gayle Long, an acquaintance from Harrison who is also making her home in Houston. One of Mabel’s
neighbors, Vonnie Hayhurst, stops by to tell Mabel about her recent visit to her hometown, Monroe, Louisi-
ana. Vonnie’s story about her trip is interrupted by Annie’s arrival, her disturbing recollection of her family’s
tragic history in Harrison, and pleas from her husband, Mr. Long, for her to “stay home and rest so you can
                                     get well”.

In The Dearest of Friends, Vonnie seeks comfort from Mabel after discovering her husband, Eddie Hayhurst,
is having an affair with a woman he met on a train trip to Harrison. Jack Votaugh, Mabel’s normally stoic husband and Eddie’s co-worker,
offers Vonnie the simplest advice, “He’ll get over it.”

This piece ends with Spring Dance, four years later in Austin. Annie lives in an asylum with fellow Harrison residents, Dave Dushon and
Greene Hamilton. Although Annie loves the ambience of the dance, she refuses to dance with anyone other than her husband. Instead, she
chats with fellow patient, Cecil Henry. Cecil is upset by his wife’s request for a divorce. Anxious to see her own family, Annie implores
Greene Hamilton to give a message to her mother when he visits his family in Harrison. After reading a letter from Dave Dushon’s mother,
Annie’s anxiety about her marriage, her family, and her future grows until she can only cope by retreating into fantasy, defiantly resolving,
“I’ll not permit thoughts like that, for then I’ll despair and never get well and we want to get well don’t we – for the sake of our loved ones
      and ourselves.”
The Roads to Home was first presented by the Manhatten Punch Line theatre, Inc., in association with Indian Falls Productions, at the Man-
hattan Punch Line Theatre in New York City on March 25, 1982. Directed by Calvin Skaggs, this production included B. Hallie Foote, Hor-
ton Foote’s daughter, playing Annie Gayle Long.

Felix is neurotic, fastidious and a gourmet cook; his wife has just thrown him out of the
house and their lives. His friend, Oscar, is messy, smokes cigars and eats fast food. He
befriends Felix and takes him in to his apartment and his life for two weeks at which point
“opposites attract” stops working. Oscar tries to turn Felix on to the fun sides of life...like
dating. The girls from upstairs, the British Pigeon sisters, take to Felix’s sad stories like
kids to lollipops. Hilarity abounds as Felix and Oscar go head to head in one of Neil
      Simon's classics...“The Odd Couple”.

From William Blake’s Auguries of Innocence

“God does no deal directly with man. It is by means of spirits that all inter-
course between God and man, both in waking life and in sleep, is carried

names. Their forms are as plentiful as the languages of man.” – Allison in
                                       Language of Angels.

What happened to Celie? No one really knows, not even her friends Kendra, Allison, Danielle, Michael, Seth, Billy,
and JB. They were all with her in those deep, dark caves in North Carolina where teenagers test their own mortality
with a dangerous combination of drugs, alcohol, and the blackest of natural mazes. After one long night in the
caves, everyone emerged except Celie and ever since, people claim to hear a clear singing voice of a girl coming
from those caves. Life is never the same for Celie’s friends. Even as time melts memories, all of them are haunted
by two unfathomable ghosts: brokenhearted regret and inexorable loneliness.

Monday evening, May 9th a concert entitled, “Songs of Heritage and Hope,” will be presented at
7:00 PM at the Custer Road United Methodist Church, 6601 Custer Road in Plano. The first portion
of the concert will be songs of our American folk heritage. The second portion of the concert is
songs of hope, based on Spirituals, and will be dedicated to the children and families in Japan. Just
as Mr. Tom shared his music with this chorus, now the chorus is sharing their songs of hope with
the children of Japan who find themselves in dire circumstances following the earthquake and tsu-
nami. With the help of Mr. Tom, the concert will be videotaped, and Japanese subtitles will be up-
loaded and distributed through the various social media networking used by the residents of Japan.

“As I sat and watched the horrific video footage of entire towns being swept away by the tsunami, I
felt so helpless,” said Russ Porter, Executive Director of the Chorus. “Immediately, I wondered how
the Chorus might be a part of something that could bring inspiration and comfort to such a horren-
dous situation. These people need hope and what better way to do that than through the universal
   language of music.”

Free admission to this concert is provided for school-age
children. Tickets for adults may be purchased at the door for
$10.00. Additional donations are welcome and can be desig-
nated to help cover the expenses of producing the music
video for the children of Japan. This concert is funded in part
   by the City of Plano.

Artistic Director of the Children’s Chorus of Collin County is
Janie Oliver, who also conducts the singers in grades 4-6. A
newly added Youth Chorus of Collin County is offered for
middle school and high school singers, conducted by Tammy
Kotara. Auditions for the 2011-2012 Chorus year will be held
   Saturday, May 14.

       ABOUT VIDEO ASSOCIATION of DALLAS:
The mission of the Video Association is to promote an understanding of video as a creative medium and
cultural force in our society, and to support and advance the work of Texas artists working in video and
       the electronic arts.

The Video Association of Dallas (VAD) is a 501(c)(3) organization incorporated on April 25, 1989. It be-
gan in 1986 as a weekend event, “Video As A Creative Medium”, presented at the Dallas Museum of
Art by independent curators Barton Weiss and John Held. That first event, which included two nights of
video by selected local and national video artists, was a great popular success, which led to the found-
ing of the Dallas Video Festival (DVF) in 1987. Video Association of Dallas presents the 24 Hour Video
Race and other programs throughout the year.

                            Richardson Community Band Presents
                                   Pops Showcase Concert
The Richardson Community Band will present its Pops Showcase Concert on Sunday,
May 15, 2011 at the Charles W. Eisemann Center located at 2351 Performance Drive in
Richardson. The 2:00 p.m. concert will feature a wide variety of lighter selections from
the concert band repertoire. Selections will include “Liberty Fanfare” by John Williams,
“Parade of the Wooden Soldiers”, “Zorba's Dance” and “The Yellow Rose of Texas.”

The RCB Saxophone Quartet will also be featured on the concert. They will perform
several selections for saxophone quartet and will also join the band on “The Whistler and
His Dog.” Members of the Saxophone Quartet are David Janes on soprano saxophone,
Clarine “Skipp” Andresen on alto saxophone, Stanton Goldberg on tenor saxophone
and Bob Hilborn on baritone saxophone.

The Richardson Community Band has a long standing tradition of paying tribute to
America’s March King, John Philip Sousa, by ending each concert with a Sousa march.
“Sousa wrote 136 marches and we have performed a great number of them,” said
conductor G.W. Jones. “But there are a number of marches we have missed and we
need to correct that.” In 2009, the band launched a project called Sousa Marches
We’ve Missed. The goal is to perform all 136 marches within the next few years. The
Pops Showcase Concert will feature Sousa’s "Gridiron Club March" which will be the
          102nd march in the countdown.

Tickets for the concert series can be purchased at the Eisemann Ticket Office, on the
Internet (www.eisemanncenter.com) or by telephone (972-744-4650). Individual concert
tickets are $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for children (K-12) & senior citizens.

The Band will also perform a free concert at the Richardson Senior Center located at 820
          West Arapaho Road, Richardson.

                                        Spring Concert
                                Wednesday, May 18, 2011, 7:30 p.m.

Storage, Safeway, Kroger, Texas Instruments Foundation, Richardson Arts Alliance,

                                What is Cooperative Arts News?

The Mission: The CAN organization was created for the purpose of helping cooperative member
arts organizations build audiences by supporting each other. CAN will send notifications to list
members with news of member
organizations' upcoming events and other arts news of interest.

The Rules:
1. Since this is a "cooperative" of arts organizations supporting each other, member groups who
would like to post notices, agree to "receive" notifications from other member groups in return.
Individuals will have the option at any time to "opt-out" if they choose not to receive future
notifications by e-mailing the list manager.
2. In order to preserve the integrity and quality of the postings to this list and to prevent any
unwanted "Spamming," all notifications that member groups want to send through this notification
list must come through the list manager. Groups simply send an e-mail notification to the list
manager with a descriptive write-up and it will be sent. If there are multiple notifications that
need to go out, they may be grouped together to reduce the number of e-mails that are sent to
   the list.

If at anytime, you would like to be removed from this e-mail list or if you are a new organization that
would like to join, please e-mail the list manager and your request will be acted upon in a timely
manner.

As always, thank-you for supporting the performing arts in the North Texas area!

Regards,

David Witherspoon
