Introduction for Guangxi Arts College Youth Orchestra and Youth Wind Symphony

The Guangxi Arts College Youth Orchestra and Youth Wind Symphony are two of the most active
performing groups at the Attached Middle School of Guangxi Arts College. Under the direction of Jon
Steinwinder (conductor/composer and computer music/MIDI teacher) and Le Keyi (Assistant Principal and
director of music education), the Orchestra and Wind Symphony provide students with the opportunity to
be exposed to various musical styles, participate in a large music ensemble and enjoy the honor of
performing for students and distinguished guests. The Youth Orchestra is a full time class for students and
is now a full sized Symphony Orchestra Ensemble. The Youth Orchestra has played music from the
movies (Jurassic Park, Titanic), American broadway theater shows (Cats) as well as a wide variety of
Orchestral music (Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Strauss). The Wind Symphony was created in the fall of 2003
and also plays a wide variety of western band music (Grainger, Giovanninni, Robert Smith), Orchestral
arrangements for band (Stravinsky, Rossini, Dvorak), pop music (the Beatles) as well as original
arrangements and compositions by conductor/composer Jon Steinwinder. In 2004 the Wind Symphony
was awarded with the honor of “top school band” in the Guangxi province, performed for the Nanning
International Folk Song Festival in October of 2005 and will also participate in the Guangxi province
competition for new original music in November of 2006.
