INSTITUTIONAL ACCREDITATION OF GURU NANAK GIRLS COLLEGE, SANTPURA YAMUNA NAGAR (HARYANA) PREFACE Guru Nanak Girls College, Santpura, Yamunanagar (Haryana) was established in the year 1973 by untiring efforts and inspiration of Sant Pandit Nischal Singh Maharaj, a renowned religious leader of the Sewa Panthi Sect of Sikhism. Sant Ji considered providing education as a service to God and Humanity. This spirit still guides the management of the college. The mission of the college is to provide quality education for women through commitment and dedication and to inculcate in the girls intellectual, social, moral and spiritual values. The Education Trust managing the college is running a chain of educational institution in order to carry out the mission . Guru Nanak Girls College as part of its continuing efforts to improve the college, approached the NAAC in the year 2002 with the request for accreditation and assessment. Their commitment to the cause and seriousness of purpose is fully reflected in the way they prepared the Self Study Report . The college had put in a lot of efforts in preparing the Report and have done a fine job of it. The NAAC constituted a Peer team consisting of Professor R.K. Mishra, Former Vice Chancellor of Gorakhpur University and Dr. R.K. Baslas, Director of Higher Education, U.P. to validate the report and assess the college. The Team visited the college on February,9 and 10, 2003. It perused the Self Study Report and all other documents made available by the college, interacted with the 1 Principal, management, teacher, non-teaching staff, students and parents of the students and alumni. The Team also visited all the teaching departments, Library, Hostel and other facilities. After this considering all the evidence, oral and documentary and its observations the Team submits the following report under the sum criterion identified by the NAAC. CRITERION WISE ANALYSIS Criterion-I:Curricular Aspects Affiliated to the Kurukshetra University, Guru Nanak Girls College is a multi-faculty girls college and offers 22 undergraduate and 9 postgraduate programmes. The college has tried indeed to translate its professed mission in its teaching. It offers a number of Career-oriented courses like Industrial Microbiology, Biochemistry, Computer Application, Information Technology, Food and Nutrition, Human Development, Clothing & Textiles and Marketing. The college has also availed of the U.G.C. assistance in order to introduce vocational courses like B.Sc (Computer Application), B.Com (Foreign Trade Practices and Procedures), B.Sc (Industrial Micro Biology), B.Sc (Biochemistry), B.Com (Computer Application) and B.Sc (Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics). The Self Financing Courses include B.C.A. (Bachelor of Computer Application), B.Sc (Hons) Information Technology and M.Sc (Computer Sc) Software. The fee charged in these courses is moderate. Consistent with the mission to inculcate spiritual and moral values, the college has set up a Dept. of Divinity which imparts teachings and message of Sikhism and significantly, in 2 the fundamentals of other religions, Hindu, Buddhism, Jainism and Islam. The Library also has section in Divinity and an examination is held in Divinity. Those distinguishing in this examination are awarded prizes and certificates. The wide range of options available attracts a large number of students from other towns of Haryana and even from the neighboring state of U.P.. Though there is no formal mechanism of collecting feedback on programmes, the Principal and teachers have remained fully conscious on this part. Criterion-II- Teaching, Learning and Evaluation The admission in the college is mainly based on academic record, however entrance test is held for admission to M.Sc Software. It is interview based in the P.G. courses. The temporal plan is annual except in M.Sc Computer Sc, where semester system is in operation. The college has qualified team of 89 teachers out of which 27 hold Ph.D and 16 M.Phil. Besides the 54 regular posts, the management has created 35 posts to cater to the self financing and other courses run by the Management. The financial implications against these 35 posts is met from the resourses generated through these courses and the management contribution. The college has a student strength of around 1815 students . The teachers taught ratio is quite satisfactory. The teaching is mainly by lecture method but in some departments of science it is supplemented by other audio visual means. The team was happy to note that in 3 Computer Sc. Class one of the student of the class was actually assisting the teacher in explaining some problems. All the teachers prepare the teaching plan in the beginning of the session and the number of the teachers are earmarked for each of the topics. The college also holds the monthly tests and in some of the departments Seminar, Quiz, vivavoce and group discussion is regularly organized. Some of the departments of Home Science also have a provision for project work and dissertations. A few departments also organize visits of students to the local institutions in order to impart them practical training in the respective fields. The college takes advantage of the U.G.C. sponsored scheme of remedial coaching for SC and BC students and also includes other weak students in this programme. The success rate of the students in the university examination is higher than the overall success rate of the university. It is gratifying to note that in a number of departments the success rate has been cent percent. The number of those who secured first division is fairly high. In Computer Science 50 out of 61 and in Physics 19 out of 23 secured first division. According to Haryana Govt. rules the selection of teacher is through the State Public Service Commission. The temporary appointments and appointments to the adhoc and management sanctioned posts is through local selection committee. The teachers are 4 by and large hardworking & conscious and the teaching is regular and well organized. The relationship between teachers and students is excellent. It was reported that the teachers personally enquire if student is found absent from the class without prior intimation. The team is certain that the college attracts a large number of students from outside the state because of the quality of teaching offered by the college. For example 117 out 121 students in computer course and 16 out of 18 in clothing and textiles are from outside the state. The college encourages the teachers to update their subject knowledge. 19 teachers attended Refresher courses. Short-term courses for computer courses are also organized & teachers take advantage of the same. About 10 teachers attended seminars held outside the town. The evaluation methods are announced in the beginning of the session through notice board and in the Morning Prayer and Classes. The regular in house assessment is also organized Criterion-III : Research, Consultancy and Extension The research output and research culture in the college is not as impressive as their teaching. Some teachers in the department of Sanskrit, Punjabi, Hindi, Home Sc, Computer Sc. and Commerce have produced some books. The department of Botany and Physics should be encouraged to continue with the research work, which was undertaken 5 by them. The college management should encourage these departments by providing the required facilities. The college has provision for study leave and adjustment of teaching, but not many teachers take advantage. During the meeting with the management the team was assured by the management to provide the financial assistance for doing research work. It is sugested that a research committee be constituted at the college level to provide and cultivate a research culture in the college. The project work and dissertation being undertaken by the students of some of the departments would go a long way in creating a research culture and this practice should be extended as far as possible to all the departments. The college is quite active in organizing the extension activities, which includes Community development, health and hygiene awareness, environmental awareness, adult education etc. The college has also adopted some villages. The college has NCC, NSS wings which are carrying the extension activities under the supervision of teachers in charges. The teacher and students of some Home Sc. department visit the local hospitals/ Clinics to counsel about the diet requirements and nutritional values. The college has collaborated with some local clubs for extension activities. Over all the team feels that the research by teachers needs to be further strengthened. There is no doubt that the teachers have the required potential and management is ready to provide financial assistance. 6 Criterion-IV : Infrastructure and Learning Resources The college has a compact and well-maintained campus covering an area of 5 Acres in the heart of the city. The built-up area is around 168320 sqft . The team found that the maintenance and general condition of cleanliness was very satisfactory. The college has sufficient funds for the maintenance and development of infrastructure. They have a committee for the maintenance of the college. NSS and NCC are also assisted from time to time to carry out cleanliness and beautification of the campus. The college has a rich library with more than 45000 volumes and they subscribe to 62 periodical/journals and 14 newspapers. The college has spent Rs 27000/- last year towards the subscription of Journals/periodicals. There is an advisory committee for the library and qualified staff to run the library. They have reprographic facilities, collection of audio visual material and internet facility. They have already initiated the computerization of books and also extending computerization in other areas of the library. The library works for 8 hrs a day for six days in a week. In order to provide greater access to students the working hours of library may be extended. It is also suggested that some more hands should be provided for computerization work, so that the computer facilities may be expedited. The maintenance and organization of library is quite impressive. They have separate periodical section, Text Book Section, Divinity Section and remarkably large reading room. One of the significant facility offered by the 7 library is that the text books are issued for the whole session to deserving students out of book bank facility. The college has well-equipped computer labs. However the laboratory facilities in the basic Science departments should be strengthened both in terms of space and equipments. Except for the Physics Dept. no other department have computers. The central computing facility under the computer science dept. has 47 nodes and two servers and is well equipped with all the required accessories , software and hardware. All the depts.. can access to this facility. The college has a well-furnished hostel facility for 230 students. The arrangement in the hostel is quite satisfactory and the overall management of the Hostel is also satisfactory. One of the remarkable features of the college is the transport facility (4 buses and one mini bus) provided by it to the students residing in distant rural areas. This has made higher education available to the girls of the rural areas who would have otherwise been deprived of the facility. More than 400 girls avail this facility. The college has a dispensary with a visiting doctor. The college has some of the sports facilities including a small Gymnasium in the college campus. However the college is availing other well developed facilities available in the sister organization. They also have facilities for Yoga. Some students from the college have received awards at the State and Inter Varsity Level in Basket Ball, Tennis, Yoga and Weightlifting. Amongst the facilities available to the students there is a canteen. Besides this the Home Science Department also runs a canteen/cafeteria which provides wholesome snacks 8 available at reasonable rates to the students. This special feature provides the students with the confidence and training to go for self-employment, which is worth special mention. Similar type of training /exposure to the students of other departments would be encouraging and beneficial. Criterion-V : Student Support and Progression The college publishes updated prospectus with all the relevant information in the beginning of every session. They also prepare an academic calendar and make it available to the students & teachers. A more effective monitoring of its implementation should be adopted. There is no full time person for organizing placement services. However the college has a placement cell, which helps the students in securing jobs and self-employment. A teacher on additional duty conducts the academic and personal counseling of the students. Criterion-VI : Organisation and Management The college is established by a trust and has a management committee with eminent persons appointed on it by the trust . The Management Committee appoints a college council which has representatives of the Govt, University and the faculty of the college as its members and the Principal of the college as the convenor. The college council appoints various committees to look after different issues of the college. The college 9 council and its various committees should play a proactive role in the developmental activities of the college. The management is quite liberal in providing financial help to the institution. Besides the 95% grants and 5% management contribution, the management is ready to provide additional grants whenever required for the development programmes of the college. A number of non teaching employees have taken computers training organized by the college. Automation of the office should be taken up immediately. The welfare schemes available to the staff are limited to those as prescribed by the Govt.. The college brings out regularly a student magazine “SACHIARA” and has a debate club. The college regularly organizes various competitions in drawing, music, painting, interior decoration etc.. The Audio Visual facilities however need to be augmented. Besides the usual Govt. scholarships the college Trust has instituted various scholarships. amounting to Rs 189293=00 cater to 128 students. The scholarships One of the note worthy achievement of the college is that in the last five years 24 students have qualified in the NET, 6 in the GATE and 35 in GMAT. While the college has an appreciable pass percentage it is a concern that the drop out rate of the college is as high as 30%. In some of the departments it has assumed an alarming proportion. For example in the dept. of Biotechnology 9 out of 10 students registered for the course dropped out. The college authorities explained this to be due to the prevailing early marriage of girls and also some due to some of them opting out to go for Engineering/Medical courses. 10 Criterion-VII : Healthy Practices   The college has a well-defined mission and is working towards its achievements. The college is imparting value-based education mainly through its divinity programme, under which the fundamentals of all the religions practiced in the country are taught.  The discipline in the college is excellent and the college has been able to develop a confidence amongst the community that their daughters receive proper care and training in the institution.  The transport facility provided by the college to the students from outlaying and remote areas had made higher education accessible to the rural girls.  In line with the mission of the founders and keeping abreast of the recent development the college has initiated a number of career-oriented courses on selffinancing basis. Overall Analysis : In course of its existence during the last twenty seven years, the college has worked towards achieving the mission of the founders. While doing so the college has been conscious of the needs of the contemporary society and preparing the girls for job market. At the same time due attention has been paid to character building and personality development. Well-organized teaching and personal attention of the teachers is definitely 11 a strong point. This attitude of the teachers has generated an atmosphere congenial for proper academic pursuits. The management of the college appears to be committed for the cause and to provide the required funds. The infrastructure and maintenance has received due attention from the management and the college authority. While appreciating the efforts of the college authorities and the management in the spread of higher education to the rural masses specifically girls, the peer team expresses concern on some of the issues and suggest the following.  The college should augment the laboratories both in terms of space and equipments.  The college should develop better facilities for promoting cultural activities among the students and for giving a proper platform and exposure to the talented the management may think of providing special facilities and building an auditorium.  The college may evolve a definite policy for the promotion of research. For this a committee may be constituted and management may be requested to provide funds towards seed money equipments, books etc.  The teachers may also be encouraged to apply at least for the minor research projects for U.G.C.  Regional and State level Seminars will go along way in generating research culture and training to the teachers and the student.  The office automation may be undertaken and the computerization of the library expedited.  Every dept. should have a staff room or proper sitting arrangement for the faculty. 12   Independent computer facility should be provided in all the depts. Audio Visual Aids should be procured and the teachers should be encouraged to use them.  Efforts should be made to obtain student feed back on teachers. The Committee appreciates the efforts put in by the management, Principal and their team in preparing the Self Study Report and wishes to thank them for the cooperation extended to the Peer Team in completing the assignment. Prof. R.K.Mishra Chairman Dr. R.K.Baslas Member I agree with the above report Dr.Tripat Kapoor 13
