10th Annual Break Dancing Fundraiser for Anacostia Youth to be Held

[WASHINGTON, DC -- February 28, 2009] DC’s largest freestyle break dancing
performance, “Breakin’ for Birney” will celebrate its tenth anniversary on Saturday, Feb.
28th, 2009. Originally a fundraiser to benefit an after school program at Birney
Elementary School in Southeast DC, 100% of the event’s proceeds now benefit a youth-
serving nonprofit, Facilitating Leadership in Youth (FLY).

FLY is a comprehensive, long-term, youth development and leadership organization that
serves youth from Anacostia, located in Southeast, DC. FLY achieves its mission year-
round through daily mentoring programs and a summer camp held at American
University for its 45 youth participants, ages 8-20. FLY’s youth participants attend
elementary school at Birney Elementary. In 2008, all of FLY’s high school seniors
graduated and went on to college.

This year’s performance is expected to be the largest Breakin’ for Birney ever held. DJ
Skeme Richards will be spinning music for the dancers all night. Break dance crews
travel from all over the East Coast to participate. The funds raised will help ensure
FLY’s continued programming and the vital work it performs in this underserved
neighborhood. FLY programs include tutoring, leadership development, summer camp,
social activism and college preparation. Juice company Odwalla is sponsoring the event.
