WORSHIP TIMES
FUTURE-WARD FAITH
PASTOR DENNIS NELSON
In early June I spent several days at St. Thomas Church, Sheffield, UK, as one of more than 100 church leaders from around the world. People from Scandinavia, central Europe, South America, Asia, Africa and Australia, as well as North America were part of a ‘pilgrimage’ into the future. In preparation for our days, there, a group of nine of us spent time with Church Doctor, Kent Hunter (who consulted with us at Bethel in 2002) working through some reading we had done and gaining an appreciation of the historical ‘location’ of Great Britain, relative to the way things are, church/faith-wise in our ministry settings in North America. We learned that Great Britain (as well as most of Europe) is something more than a generation ahead of North America in terms of the place of Christian faith in the lives of the respective population of the two places. In Europe, immediately following WWII, Europeans participated in the faithlife practices, like worship, in a way that was similar to the level of participation that is current in our country. But subsequent generations of Europeans have found themselves distanced from practiced Christianity in societies that are increasingly secular. The prediction is that a ‘forget about the church’ mindset is likely to be a growing trend for Americans in the years ahead. In other words, England is, today, where the USA will be in a generation or two. Unlikely, you say? If you had to guess, overall, would you guess that more and more of the people you know in your everyday life are growing as committed followers of Jesus; or would you guess that there is a trend in the opposite direction? Bethel is blessed to be a relatively healthy and growing church. About 1 in 3 of our members worship each week. In Sheffield, it used to be like that, but today, fewer than 2% of the population attend worship on a given weekend. In England, a growing number of

HELP THE HOMELESS
A Bethel teams gathers twice monthly to prepare sandwiches, then takes the church van to the Dorothy Day Center in downtown St. Paul to serve the snack. A team/person is needed to take over one Monday each month. This would involve organizing the group and necessary food items, and driving the church van to the Center. If you would be willing to help in this ministry, or for more details, please call Chuck or Ruth Lewis through the church office at 3868821.

(CONTINUED) citizens has taken active steps to dissociate themselves from the church by having their baptisms declared ‘void.’ St. Thomas Church, Crookes, Sheffield, was at a point, a dozen years ago, when fewer than 30 people came to worship each week. Even so, St. Thomas, Crookes, has found a way to be a growing congregation: more than 700 people currently participate in weekend ‘celebration’ worship/learning gatherings. More than 60% of its membership is under 40 years of age. How did that happen? It happened when team leader Michael Breen was given the vision to see that what the church was doing was not engaging a vast swath of the people in Sheffield. Until Breen, St. Thomas did what churches have done for centuries. It said, essentially, ‘we’re open for business on Sundays at 10; y’all come.’ But almost no one did. So Breen, and others at St. Thomas, went to where the people were; they established small gatherings of friends and people who shared a common interest, or a common life situation (young parents, for example). The aim was less to get people into a given worship service than it was to get people of growing faith into contact with people in the community. These small gatherings are designed to include an ever expanding range of acquaintances and friends to give people far from God an opportunity to experience God’s amazing grace and unshakeable love in an environment that is comfortable and unthreatening. The aim, after all, was not to get people to do ‘religious stuff,’ but to meet friends, to meet God and to live life better; in other words to be whole hearted followers of Jesus. When that becomes the aim, God’s faith-giving Spirit continues to transform lives, build supportive communities of faith, and lead those communities of faith to serve the human needs of the wider community, in ways that are most remindful of what happened in the first generations of the Church as the book of Acts tells the story. Looking forward, faith-wise, we will do well to work hard at opening our minds to the possibility that the way we have ‘done’ church in our memory, is not necessarily the way that the church will be in the future. Finally, the only reason for the church’s existence is to form new generations of Christ followers in every age. It is exciting to see God at work in a situation which may be much like the one we will encounter in our future. And it gives me hope, big-time, to know that God’s hand is not shortened, no matter what happens!

THANKS
The Hudson Relay For Life Planning Committee and Survivors from the Hudson Area wish to thank Bethel Lutheran Church for allowing them to have the Cancer Survivors Reunion at Highlands. The event was well attended and a wonderful healing experience for the survivors. The location was highly praised and appreciated. Thanks to Bryce Yonash, Chuck and Ruth Lewis for putting in extra time with set-up, take-down and clean up; that too was greatly appreciated. Please help us “Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back!” in the package. Our Pastors will take the shawls to folks needing our prayers. Call Joan Sorenson or Joann Jewitt through the church office if you would like a knitting supply package.

GOOD STEWARDSHIP & THOUGHTFUL SHARING
Good stewardship and thoughtful sharing…what a great concept for congregations! In response to a number of requests from our members who wish to borrow items for special events outside the building, we are pleased to offer some options. A limited amount of tables and chairs are available for lending (with a $20 deposit to be returned when items are brought back to the church); canopies can be rented at a cost of $20 per canopy. Because these are considered on a first-come, firstserved basis, it is important to reserve them as soon as possible---particularly during the summer. It is also VERY important to arrange for the use of any equipment, kitchen items, or room use through the church office. Unfortunately, there are items needed for special events (including unexpected ones like funerals) that have been discovered to be missing, so we are urging everyone to be careful to observe our guidelines for good stewardship. Use of meeting or gathering space at either of Bethel’s campuses should also be arranged through the church office. Request forms for both room usage and borrowing items are available in the office. For more information, contact Joelene Baker by phone at 715386-8821 OR email jbaker@bethelhudson.org.

TIPS FOR EXERCISING GOOD STEWARDSHIP
Bethel’s Endowment Committee encourages us to exercise good stewardship of our money. To better equip us to do this future issues of the Visitor will explore some legal concepts that will help us manage our affairs.
JUNE COUNCIL UPDATE
Congregational income was 5% above budget. Expenses this month ran 2% above budgeted amount. Council will continue to keep a close eye on expenses. Capital Campaign continues to track closely to budgeted amount. This year’s goal is to have the general fund break even. Pastor Kari reported that her first week of “handling things on her own” has been a week of exposure to many facets of Bethel. The Book of Faith group has finished meeting and will resume in the Fall. Bible and Brew continues and is generating great conversation. Pastor Kari recently attended the NW Synod Assembly held in Eau Claire. A resolution passed to relocate the Synod office from Rice Lake to Luther Park Bible Camp in Chetek. WOW (Wednesday Outdoor Worship) starts June 17 at Highlands. Lisa Ruettimann: Sunday School is done for the summer and will resume September 13th. Senior Recognition was held June 7th and 51 seniors were recognized. Special thanks to Pastor Kari for recognizing students during the services. Lisa will be at Luther Point the week of June 14th. This year’s VBS theme is SonRock Kids Camp which will be based on a camping theme. More VBS volunteers are still needed
Congregational Life assisted with the Transforming Communities meal. Outreach Team is working to form another group to knock on doors. Mission and Justice: Texas trip in July has 5 from Bethel and 5-7 from Fall Creek signed up. There are 15 signed up for the Tanzania trip. There is also a waiting list for Tanzania of people outside of the congregation. Youth Ministry: A canoe trip is planned for July. A few additional canoes may be needed. Bethel Highlands Preschool: Another successful school year has ended. Classrooms will be painted this summer with help from the preschool families. Survivor Camp will be held in August. Discussion was held on issues to be voted on at the ELCA General Assembly.
Power of Attorney for Health Care We have the right to make health care decisions for ourselves as long as we are able to do so. Our health care agent, if we have one, can make the decisions for us if we are unable to make them for ourselves. A power of attorney for health care is a written document in which you name the person or people you want to make these decisions for you if you are unable to make them for yourself. Appointing such an agent requires a frank and open discussion about your intentions. Combining the appointment of a health care agent with advance directives is very helpful to your agent. A sample form is available on line at dhfs.wisconsin.gov, or consult with your attorney.

A GRADUATION MESSAGE
A New Beginning
As you make a new beginning in your life, graduate, be aware of important things you didn’t learn in school: As you pursue your dreams, remember to take time to help and serve others, even if doing so slows you down a little. As you explore and develop your unique talents, remain humble, realizing that your special abilities are gifts from God. As life hands you challenges, welcome them as ways to become smarter and stronger. As you acquire material things, know that your most important possessions are honesty, integrity, and the desire to make a difference. Congratulations, graduate. May your new path take you where you want to go and also bring you pleasant surprises!
