                                    ABSTRACT


The human body temperature is a good health indicator. All objects emit thermal
radiation as a function of temperature and wavelength for all wavelengths, including
infrared rays. The wavelength of infrared rays lies between visible and microwave
radiations ranging between 700 nanometers to 0.1 millimeter. Infrared (IR) imaging is
relatively inexpensive, noninvasive and harmless.


Thermal imaging system or thermography - is an imaging procedure which records
thermal patterns with IR camera. It can provide visual and quantitative documentation
of these temperature measurements. Nowadays, it is widely used in the medical field
of diagnosis.


Our eyes are the little windows to the world and hence one needs to take good care of
the eyes. IR imaging has been employed by many groups to study eye abnormalities
and various eye diseases. Therefore, this project with the objectives mentioned below
will contribute to the important eye imaging works.


In this work, the overall objective is to apply image processing techniques on the IR
images of the eye for the analysis of the ocular surface temperature (OST) of the
normal subjects of three categories (above35, below35 and with contact lens). In this
study, for each subject, 500 IR normal images were analyzed. By extracting
information of pixel average value from the IR images, it is possible to obtain the
temperature value of cornea.


The parameter of average cornea temperature is then used to study the variability of
OST in different normal category subjects. Our study showed that the average cornea
temperature for different groups gives distinct ranges with „p‟ values less than 0.0001.
The ACT decreases with age and with contact lens. A graphical user interface (GUI)
is developed to let the user visualize the temperature profiles of the eyes and give out
results of the analysis.

                        CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background and Motivation

1.1.1 Background

Blindness or poor vision affects 3.3 million Americans aged above 40 years and this
may reach 5.5 million by the year 2020. [http://technocrat.net/d/2007/6/16/21627]
[Last Accessed on 24 October 2010] It is thus very important to take care of our eyes
and studies on eyes will contribute to help the matter. The most leading causes of the
visual impairment and blindness are cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration and
diabetes retinopathy.   There are a number of eye imaging systems available to
visualize non-invasively different parts of the eye with higher precision. At present,
the techniques available are computer tomography, confocal laser scanning
microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging, optical coherence tomography, ultrasound
imaging and infrared thermography. [Acharya et al., 2008b].



1.1.2 Motivation


Thermal imaging system or thermography, an imaging procedure which records
thermal patterns with IR camera, can provide visual and quantitative documentation
of temperature measurements and IR imaging has been widely used in the medical
field for many years. The use of IR imaging for the detection of eye abnormalities
has yielded good results [Jones, 1998; Galassi et al., 2007; Morgan et al., 1993;
Zelichowska et al., 2005]. Temperature changes in the anterior ocular segment of the
eye is small and has been studied for various eye problems [Efron et al., 1989;
Cardona et al., 1996; Maldonado-Codina et al., 2001; Betney et al., 1997; Wittig et
al., 1992].

In our present work, we have analyzed the thermograms of the normal subjects for
three different group subjects (aged above 35, aged below 35 and with contact lens)
using the parameters of average cornea temperature by using the infrared images. The
temperature profiles of left and right eyes will be compared.

1.2 Project Objectives


      The main objective of this project is to analyze the variation of ocular surface
       temperature in thermograms of the normal subjects for different age group
       subjects (above35, below35 and contact lens) using the parameter, average
       corneal temperature by using infrared camera. The temperature profiles of left
       and right eyes will be compared.
      Another objective is to develop a graphical user interface (GUI) to show the
       variability of ocular surface temperature.
      The academic goal of this project is to develop the skill of research,
       programming and analysis.


1.3 Project Scope


The project will include the following proposed scheme:
      Acquiring infrared images of normal subjects of various age groups which
       have been already collected, to be used in the analysis.
      Pre-processing of image data (raw images) to have a standard format.
      Detection and extraction of the cornea area from the images.
      Extraction of Average Cornea Temperature (ACT), and the statistical
       parameters from the preprocessed images.
      Analysis of ACT feature and statistical parameters to study the variability of
       the ocular surface temperature using MATLAB.

           CHAPTER 2: THEORY AND LITERATURE REVIEW


2.1 Anatomy of an eye


The human eye is an organ which reacts to light for many different purposes. The eye
is made up of three coats, enclosing three transparent structures. The outermost layer
is composed of the cornea and sclera. The middle layer consists of the choroid,
ciliary body, and iris. The innermost is the retina. The light rays from an object are
reflected off and enter through the cornea. It then refracts the rays that pass through
the pupil. Surrounding the pupils is the iris, the colored portion of the eye. The pupil
opens and closes to regulate the amount of light passing through it. Hence, we are
able to see the dilation of the pupils. Light rays will pass the lens that is located
behind the pupils. This lens change the shape of the rays by further bending and
focusing    them     to    the    retina    located    at    the    back    of    eyes.

The retina consists of two major types of light-sensitive receptors which are also
called tiny light-sensing nerve cells. They are cones nerve cells and rods nerve cells.
The cones enable us to see bright light which produces photonic vision. Cones are
mostly concentrated in and near the fovea. Only a few are present at the sides of the
retina .It gives a clear and sharp image vision as when one looks at an object directly.

It detects colours and detects fine details. The rods however, enable us to see in the
dark which produces isotopic vision. It detects motion in the dark. It is located
outside the macula and goes all the way to the outer of edge retina. Rod density is
greater in the peripheral retina than in the central retina. Hence it provides peripheral
or side vision. Cones and rods are connected through intermediate cells in the retina
to nerve fibers of the optic nerve. When rods and cones are stimulated by light, the
nerves send off impulses through these fibers to the brain. Figure. 2.1 illustrate a
simple diagram of the parts of the eye.


2.2 Infrared Imaging


There are a few types of infrared imaging such as infrared thermography, thermal
imaging or thermal video. Thermal imaging system or thermography - is an imaging
procedure which records thermal patterns with IR camera. It can provide visual and
quantitative documentation of these temperature measurements. In the medical field,
IR imaging has been widely used. The human body radiates heat to the environment.
As temperature increases, the amount of energy emitted at any wavelength increases
and the wavelength of peak emission decreases. The body surface temperature can be
captured by thermal imager to monitor the health of a person, efficacy of a drug and
healing after the surgery by using the thermal patterns. It has been used to control by-
pass circulation during cardiac surgery and to investigate the differential diagnosis of
the peripheral vascular closure. It is also widely used in dermatology and breast
cancer detection. The use of IR imaging to study eyes is also widely used. An
example of image of a normal eye and its corresponding IR image of the eye is show
in Figure 2.2 (a) and Figure 2.2(b).

Recently, Acharya et al, have classified various anterior segment optical images into
normal, iridocyclitis, cataract and corneal haze with a sensitivity of 87% and
specificity of 100% using image processing and backpropogation classifier
techniques. [Acharya et al., 2008a] The same anterior segment optical images the
images have also been classified into normal, iridocyclitis and corneal haze with a
sensitivity and specificity of 85% and 100% using higher order spectra and Gaussian
mixture model classifier. [Tan et al., 2008]. A group from Germany has recently
studied the thermogram of normal and iridocyclitis eyes. They reported that, the
average corneal temperature of the normal group is 35.4±0.100C. Subjects with
iridocyclitis showed a “hot ring” on the cornea above the ciliary body. The corneal
temperature in these cases was 2.200C higher than for normal subjects. They have
also noted that, there was temperature difference of up to 300C between the eye
which has undergone cataract surgery and the non-operated eyes. They have
proposed specific patterns of thermograms for iridocyclitis and normal eye

October 2010]. IR imaging has also been applied to study the OST with different
materials/patterns of contact lens wear. [Purslow et al., 2005].


2.3 Image Processing with MATLAB


MATLAB® is a high-level language and interactive environment that enables you to
perform computationally intensive tasks faster than with traditional programming
languages such as C, C++, and FORTRAN.
In this project, we are going to use MATLAB to implement the image processing
part as well as the GUI (see Section 2.5). For the image pre-processing steps,
MATLAB will be used to perform them starting with file type conversion, RGB to
grayscale conversion, file resizing and cropping, creation and finally application of
the region of interest. After image pre-processing is done, temperature extraction
from the images and analysis of the results will be performed using MATLAB.

2.4 Statistical Application


The statistical mathematical application is used in this project. The mean, moment,
standard deviation, variance, skew ness and kurtosis of the collected data were
calculated and analyzed.

2.4.1 Mean


The most common mathematical expression in statistical distribution which is also
called as the average is denoted by Greek symbol µ. The Mean is calculated by
adding together all the data values and dividing this total by the number of items in
the sample. The mean of statistical distribution with a continuous random variable,
also called the expected value is obtained by integrating the product of the variable
with its probability as defined by the distribution.

In this project, mean is used to calculate the average temperature of infrared eye
images for different age group.



2.4.2 Moment


Moment is a quantitative measure that measure the shape of a set of data points. The
first moment is the same as the mean. Here in this project, we are going to measure
the central moment that is moment about the mean. We are going to use the second
order central moment to analyze the shape of our data since the first central moment
is essentially zero. The second central moment is given by m 2  E  x   2 where

2.4.3 Standard Deviation


Standard deviation is the statistical measurement that used to determine how much
variation is from the average or mean. Standard deviation is denoted by Greek
symbol σ. A standard deviation of a data set are equal to zero indicates that all values

2.4.4 Variance


Variance is the most commonly used measures for dispersion (variation) and take
into account how data are distributed. Variance show data dispersion with respect to
the central location, mean. Variance is calculated by calculating the sum of the
squared deviation from the mean, divided by the sample size minus one. The
resulting value is known as the variance. The formula to calculate Variance is,

2.4.5 Skewness


Skewness is a measure of the lack of symmetry of a data set. The skewness value can
be positive or negative or even undefined. Positive skew (right-skew) data set has a
long tail of high values and negative skew (left-skew) data set has as long tail of low
values. Normally, mean is greater than the median for right-skew data. The mean is
less than the median for a left skew data.

2.4.6 Kurtosis


Kurtosis is a measure of the peakedness of the probability distribution of a real
valued random variable. In other words, it measures whether the distribution is tall
and skinny or short and squat compared to the normal distribution of the same
variance. If a distribution has a peak at the mean and long tails, the fourth moment
will be high and the kurtosis positive (platykurtic); and conversely, bounded
distributions tend to have low kurtosis (leptokurtic).

Higher kurtosis means more of the variance is the result of infrequent extreme
deviations, as opposed to frequent modestly sized deviations. Distributions that are
more outlier-prone than the normal distribution have kurtosis greater than 3. The

2.5 Graphical User Interface


A graphical user interface (GUI) is a graphical rather than purely textual interface
between a person and a computer, which uses window, icons and/or menus which are
usually manipulated      by   a   mouse     and   sometimes           through   a   keyboard.

advantage of GUIs is that they make computer operation more intuitive, and thus
easier to learn and use. Adding to this intuitiveness of operation is the fact that GUIs
generally provide users with immediate, visual feedback about the effect of each
action. In this project, the results of each of the three groups will be displayed
through a GUI so that the user can easily interact with the GUI to observe the results.

environment called GUIDE.

                   CHAPTER 3: PROJECT MANAGEMENT
3.1 Project Plan

A Gantt Chart (shown in appendix B), prepared by Microsoft Excel will be used to
create the project plan and to track and monitor the timely progress of the different
phases of the project. Since the Gantt Chart provides the timeline for the whole
project plan, it enables the assessment of the progress at different point of times and
the remedy one has to take in case of lagging behind the projected timeline. It will
effectively guide the process of implementing the project starting from exploration of
background materials to real implementation and delivery of the project to the final
presentation of the project. The proper plan of this project is not only my contribution
but also my supervisor, Dr Raj, did his part to meet up regularly with me and
constantly remind me as not to have lapsed on the planned schedule.

3.2 Project Tasks and Schedule

Project tasks are divided into nine sections.

      Task 1, schedule for 3 weeks to complete. Literature search is one of the most
       important steps for understanding and managing of the project. It is mainly
       focus on library reference books and online IEEE journals.
      Task 2, schedule for 3 weeks to complete. Preparation of initial report is
       showing how much understand on the project depend on Task 1.
      Task 3, schedule for 4 weeks to complete. In this task study on digital signal
       processing, how to write MATLAB code used in digital image processing.

       Task 4, schedule for 3 weeks to complete. In this task study and work out
        Semi Automated Method and prepare Interim Report to present the progress
        of project.
       Task 5, 6 & 7, schedule for 21 weeks to complete. These three tasks are very
        important and main tasks for the project. In these task, focus on analyze the
        variation of average temperature with cornea for different categories and
        study how to display the temperature profile of the eyes at GUI.
       Task 8 & 9, schedule for 14 weeks to complete. In this task, preparation of
        final report and oral presentation based on the analysis and implementation of
        task 5, 6 & 7. These two tasks also can be considered as important task since
        it is carried out 40% of capstone project score. And also final report is the
        show case of the entire project and judge how much effort to put in the report.
       This project commenced on 12th Jan 2010 with a submission date on 15th Nov
        2010.

                   CHAPTER 4: DESIGN AND ALGORITHM


4.1 Project Approach and Method


In this project, study about the normal subjects of various groups (above35, below35
and persons with contact lens) were done using IR images. Images were taken with
the    subject‟s     eyes    wide      open     by     Vario     Therm      Camera
[http://www.deplan.gr/download/variotherm_engl_flyer.pdf] [Last Accessed on 24
October 2010] interfaced to a computer. Images are stored in 24-bit JPEG format
with an image size of 698x555 pixels. IRBIS plus 2-2 software of the Vario Therm
system are used for analysis. It has measurement accuracy of ±2% and at 30°C, and it
has a temperature resolution of 0.08K. Room temperature has to be maintained at
22.0±1.0 degree Celsius with appropriate lighting conditions during the image
acquisition. Figure 4.1(a) shows the Vario Therm camera and Figure 4.1(b) shows
the room temperature or humidity thermometer. In our study without any anterior or
posterior segment eye abnormalities is considered as “normal”.

4.2 Different Groups for IR image study


There are total of 500 IR images of various age group have been studied. All the
images were provided by Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore. The number of subjects,
type and details of normal eye fundus photos in each group is shown in Table 4.1.

Please refer to the below table for the range of age and number of subjects in each
group and below images for the representative images of different groups.

The method we had employed for the analysis of the images involves the image pre-
processing procedure described in detail in the following section.

4.3 Image Pre-processing
4.3.1 File Conversion


Firstly, I have to reformat the image from .bmp to .jpg. Secondly, the RGB images
were changed into grayscale images using MATLAB. Figure 4.5 shows the
comparison of the original IR colored RGB eye images and the converted grayscale
images.

4.3.2 File Resizing and Cropping


All the images are resized to a standard size (200 x 400) for analysis. Then the resized
image is cropped to include only the eye and other additional details like eye brows
etc were removed as much as possible. Figure 4.6 shows the resized and cropped
image.

4.3.3 Region of interest (Cornea)


First, length and width of the cropped image was measured. The radius of the cornea
is one-forth of the length of the entire eye. Based on this, region of interest (cornea)
was selected by keeping the mask at the center of the eye as shown in Figure 4.7 (a).
The background (other than cornea) was removed and as a result only the cornea was
extracted in Figure 4.7 (b) by applying the region of interest.

Now the cornea is ready to be processed for the proposed parameter of analysis: the
average cornea temperature.

4.4 Average Cornea Temperature (ACT)


Firstly, the average pixel value within the cornea as shown in Figure 4.7 will be
calculated. Then it is converted to the equivalent temperature to get the average
temperature. In this work we have assigned temperature ranges from 28°C to 36°C
to 0 to 255 pixel intensities. As a result the formula to convert the pixel values to
equivalent temperature is given in following equation.
Temperature T   f ( x, y) / 255 * (36  28)  28 , where f(x,y) is the pixel value.

For example, the figure shown in figure. 4.7, the result showed that the temperature is
calculated to be 33.7621 degree.

Average cornea temperature (ACT) will be extracted using MATLAB program
jblinkimageAqui.m         which calls two other MATLAB programs jsequenceAc.m
and jPOINTSACU.m. These MATLAB codes are listed in appendix A.


4.5 GUI Design


The GUI will be developed using MATLAB graphical user interface development
environment called GUIDE.


In MATLAB the command “guide” opens the GUI Design Environment. GUIDE
initiates the GUI Design Environment(GUIDE) tools that allow GUIs to be created or
edited interactively from FIG-files or handle(s) to figure. Calling GUIDE by itself
will open the GUIDE Quick Start Dialog where you can choose to open a previously
created GUI or create a new one from one of the provided GUI templates as shown
in Figure 4.8.

Here we started to create a new one from default blank template as shown in Figure.
2.5. Then using the palette on the left, resizing and positioning of the canvas and
placing buttons, static texts, axes, edit texts and pop-up menus are done to start
drafting the GUI, as shown in Figure 4.9.

Then each component of the design can have their properties set using the Property
Inspector which can be chosen with right click and can be edited in the new pop-up
window. Figure 4.10 shows changing the property of pop-up menu by using the
mentioned procedure.

After designing the layout of the GUI, it is now time to take care of the functionality
provided by each GUI component by programming it. When we save the layout file,
then a MATLAB “.m” file with the same name is automatically generated where we
can program our GUI components. Now we attach the appropriate code to the
callback of each component. For example, in the m.file, we added the code “close;”
to attach to the pushbutton3 so that when pushbutton is pressed, the GUI will close.

After every component in the GUI is attached to the code to perform desired effects,
the design of the GUI is now complete. The results of the GUI designs are provided
in details in Section 5.3.


4.6 Matlab Codes Explanation

4.6.1 jblinkimageAqui.m
        jblinkimageAqui.m is the main MATLAB code to perform the extraction of
        the Average Cornea Temperature (ACT) parameter. This function calls two
        other functions jsequenceAc.m and jPOINTSACU.m to completely perform
        the extraction of ACT parameter for a given image.

4.6.2 jsequenceAc.m
        jsequenceAc.m provides the pixel value of the each pixel in the image and the
        function is called by the jblinkimageAqui.m

4.6.3 jPOINTSACU.m
        jPOINTSACU.m provides a platform for graphical manual input to the
        program in choosing the area of interest and is called by jblinkimageAqui.m

4.6.4 plotdata.m
      plotdata.m is used to plot the Average Cornea Temperature (ACT) of 25
      frames after each blink for both left and right eyes. Graphs produced by this
      program are used to design the Graphical User Interface.

4.6.5 Above35.m
      Above35.m is the MATLAB code to be used with Above35.fig for Graphical
      User Interface (GUI) implementation for Above 35 group. Below35.m and
      Contactlens.m which are similar to Above35.m (not attached as appendix due
      to their length) also provide GUIs for their respective groups.

5.1 ANNOVA Results (Left Eye)


Table 5.1 summarizes the statistical analysis results of IR images of the left eyes of the three
different groups. Six different features for the statistical analysis are done and the range of the
results are given in the table.

5.3 GUI Results


The graphical user interface (GUI) allows the user to observe the results of analysis of the infrared
images. The GUI is presented to the user for three separate groups: Above 35, Below 35 and with
Contact Lens. Here an example GUI screenshots from Above 35 Group is shown.


Step 1:


When the GUI is started, the user is greeted with the following screen and allows the user to choose
a specific patient and the blink number as shown in Figure 5.3.

Step 2:


When the user has selected a specific patient and the blink number, from the drop down list shown
under “Select” on the GUI, the details of the patient and the infrared images of the left and right eye
for the chosen specific patient and blink number is displayed as shown in figure 5.4

Step 3:


Finally, when the user clicks on “Diagnose” button on the GUI, the results of the analysis
performed on the IR images will be displayed. The results displayed are the statistics of the
temperature – mean, moment, standard deviation, variance, skewness and kurtosis, and graphs

showing the temperature variation during the 25 IR images after the blink. The GUI screen would
look like in figure 5.5.

Step 4:


Repeat the above three steps allowing the user to choose different patient and blink number to see
the results. Finally, the “Exit” button on the GUI allows the user to terminate the GUI.

   CHAPTER 6 : DISCUSSION, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS


    6.1 Discussion


    Table 5.1 and Table 5.2 show the range of statistical features of the parameter ACT
    evaluated for the three groups. Our results show that, for the left eye, the average
    cornea temperature (ACT) is 33.701°C ± 0.699 for above 35 subjects, 34.345°C ±
    0.755 for below 35 subjects and 33.345°C ±0.755 for subjects with contact lens and
    for the right eye, the average cornea temperature (ACT) is 33.876°C ± 0.673 for
    above 35 subjects, 34.388°C ± 0.532 for below 35 subjects and 33.232°C ±0.750
    for subjects with contact lens. Therefore, the ACT decreases as the age increases
    and contact lens also contribute to a lower ACT. It is expected since a person‟s
    body metabolism rate and blood supply to the eye decreases when getting older and
    thus the average corneal temperature is deemed to be decreased. The contact lens
    also makes the ACT decreased. Recently, Ooi et al., has shown that the corneal
    surface temperature during contact lens wear is found to decrease by an average of
    0.52°C ± 0.05 compared with a bare cornea for contact lens of types, LotrafilconA,
    BalafilconA, and EtafilconA. [Ooi et al., 2007] So, our results agreed with the
    expected results and published results. Our results are clinically significant as the
    „p‟ values are lower ( less than 0.0001) for both left and right eyes.


    Statistical analysis of ACT were performed using not only mean but also the second
    moment, standard variation, variance, skewness and kurtosis. The result showed
    that the variance and the second order moment provide almost the same results
    validating the fact that the unbiased estimator of the variance is correct. Standard
    deviation results showed that the deviation is not that much from the ACT average
    values. Skewness for left and right eyes showed that the data can be skewed either
    positively or negatively. High average kurtosis numbers (greater than 3) showed
    that there is very less likely possibility of outliers. There evidently is no frequent
    extreme deviations.


    Finally, the results of the analysis were presented in a Graphical User Interface.
    Our results showed that using GUI can display the statistical results of the patient‟s

    eye IR images and this can be used as an adjunct tool for the physician to cross
    check their diagnosis. The software for the analysis of the eye images was written in
    MATLAB.


   6.2 Conclusion


   Thermography can be extensively evaluated for use as an effective non-invasive
   ocular temperature measuring tool. In this work, we have analyzed the thermogram of
   the normal subjects for various groups which are different in age or with and without
   contact lens. We have proposed different range of values for the parameter (ACT) for
   three different groups of normal subjects. Our results show that, the average OST
   decreases with age as well as with the contact lens. ACT for left eyes is 34.345°C ±
   0.755 for below 35 subjects and 33.701°C ± 0.699 for above 35 subjects showing it
   decreases with age. Same thing happens for right eyes, where ACT is 34.388°C ±
   0.532 for below 35 subjects and 33.876°C ± 0.673 for above 35 subjects. Comparing
   results for contact lens, we can also see that the ACT decreases when with contact
   lens regardless of age. ACT for left eye is 33.345°C ±0.755 and for right eye is
   33.232°C ±0.750 if the subjects are with contact lens. From these results, it is clearly
   seen that contact lens decreases the ACT for both above 35 and below 35 groups.
   Therefore, we conclude that ACT decreases with age as well as with contact lens.
   Our results agree with expected result according to the theory and published results.
   So, we have achieved good results for this project in analyzing eye IR images.


  6.3 Recommendations


   In this work, we have analyzed the images with ACT parameter for three different
   groups, above 35, below 35 and with contact lens. In the study temperature profile of
   normal eyes using the IR images, the accuracy of the tools depends on several factors,
   such as the size, quality/sharpness of the pictures and parameters chosen to evaluate
   the images. Our system produces encouraging results. However, there is room for
   further improvement in evaluating better features, thereby improving the robustness
   of the intended diagnostic systems. For example, we can propose another parameter
   to analyze the images or analyze more groups not only in terms of age and contact
   lens in normal persons but also with eye diseases.

                                          PART II
                        CRITICAL REVIEW AND REFLECTION


   In this project, a great deal of Literature research on the overview of digital image
   processing and infrared imaging process was carried out. Skills like project
   management and information researches are greatly enhanced over the period of the
   entire project. Time and project management skills are the most important in making
   the project tasks undertaken to be achieved. The tight schedule of juggling between
   part time studies and a full time job makes it difficult. Sometimes, I have to face
   delay on my planned schedule of the project and I have to amend the plan so that I
   won‟t lag behind the schedule and still meet the project plan deadlines. These were
   overcome as proper planning and scheduling were carried out.


   At the beginning of project, a lot of time was spent on Project Overview and
   Literature Review as of knowing what was already available in the area of study. A
   lot of research was done over the reference books from SIM University Library and
   IEEE and other published journals to know more about digital image processing and
   Semi Automated method. Good MATLAB programming skill was also required to
   use in analysis of Average Cornea Temperature (ACT) feature and statistical
   parameters to study the variability of the ocular surface temperature.


   One of my weaknesses has been the time duration required to read a large content of
   literatures. Throughout the project, I have learned how to better read the literature to
   understand the important points. Searching papers both online in library and
   skimming through the literature for the background materials and theory needed to be
   understood for the project all helped improve my time usage on reading literature.
   Now, I have a better understanding of searching reference materials and how to use
   them as required by the project.


   Technical report writing is another weak point of mine. I attended the “Project Report
   and Poster Design Briefing” offered by UniSIM and the read the Capstone Project
   Handbook thoroughly. I also have learned from my seniors on writing technical

   reports. I have improved on writing technical report which I don‟t have much skill at
   the beginning of the project.


   Even though I have previously worked with MATLAB programming, MATLAB
   programming required for this project is not that easy. I have to learn basic image
   processing skill in MATLAB by reading the book provided by my advisor, “Digital
   Image Processing using MATLAB”. MATLAB programming skills were greatly
   improved throughout the project since this project is focused on a software
   development written in MATLAB. However, the project not only requires me to write
   the programming codes but also needs me to understand the digital imaging
   processing part. Problems are encountered throughout the project. I had to search
   solutions in books and/or consult with my advisor to solve them. It has been a lot of
   work but finally it paid off with a successful completion of the project with
   encouraging results.


   One thing I have learned from working through the project is that trying to use
   different approaches to solve a problem can often leads to a better solution and can
   save time and effort. For example, I have used EXCEL to store the data and linked to
   MATLAB so that not data is need to be put into MATLAB manually which has saved
   me time and a lot of work. I have learned a lot of new skills working on this project,
   ranging from batch image processing using an imaging software to using EXCEL to
   make Gantt Chart to designing Graphical User Interfaces with MATLAB.


   As to conclude, completion of this project has significantly improved my Project
   Management skill, Research skill, Analytical skill , technical report writing skill and
   MATLAB programming skill.
