                     Homecoming 2007 Alumni Assembly: “Golden Lions Going for the Goal”
                                                                                                                                              Message from the President
                                                                                                                                               This has been a most challenging year for all of us. Regrettably, most of the goals that we set out to
                                                                                                                                          achieve have not been accomplished. However, we must remain positive, vigilant and resolved to move
                                                                                                                                          forward. Our great university depends on us; our students need us and the legacies of so many great
                                                                                                                                          forerunners require that we pass the torch to others so that they may continue the journey. We must move
                                                                                                                                          forward! In the spirit of one of our Greatest Presidents, “We have nothing to fear but fear it self.”

                                                                                                                                               As I did in the beginning of my tenure, I challenged each of you to do two things: (1) paint the
                                                                                                                                          picture of UAPB National Alumni Association as it is now and (2) paint the picture as you envision it
                                                                                                                                          becoming. We must continue to focus on the main pillars that will make our Association all that it can
                                                                                                                                          be. We can do this by expanding the membership base, raising more funds, and by getting more alumni
                                                                                                                                          involved in alumni affairs. Growing the university and growing the Alumni Association is our perennial
                                                                                                                                          goal. Every alumni must put and keep his or her hand on the plow. Remember, our focus is to promote
                                                                                                                                          the general welfare of the university and support the development of our students into becoming global
                                                                                                                                          productive citizens. Retaining, reclaiming and recruiting members require everyone’s attention.

                                                                                                                                               The Goals in our draft Strategic Plan 2007-2011 must be adopted and executed. It is imperative that
                                                                                                                                          we realize and understand that, “A people without a vision shall perish.” I truly believe that execution of
                                                                                                                                          the Strategic Plan Goals can make a difference in where we are now and where we would like to go as an

                                                                                                                                               •    Increase Revenue Streams - Strategic Goal 1: We need to increase the Revenue Streams for
                     Black and Gold Gala: ‘Celebrate the Catalysts of UAPB’                                                               the Association. The Association’s major revenue streams come from National Memberships (Life and
                                                                                                                                          Regular) and the Queen Contestant Drive. As of this date, only eleven chapters out of a total of forty-
                                                                                                                                          four have paid chapter assessments. A total of approximately 500 members have paid annual dues, of
                                                                                                                                          a population of 16,000 plus. Imagine if we colleted annual membership dues of $35.00 from 15,000
                                                                                                                                          alumni, we would generate $525,000. This is enough capital to adequately staff our national office
                                                                                                                                          (hire an Executive Director and office staff), make needed alumni house repairs, purchase and update
                                                                                                                                          equipment, hire consultants, and provide additional financial support to the university.

                                                                                                                                               •    Improve Governance and Management - Strategic Goal 2. The Strategic Plan refers to the
                                                                                                                                          Constitution and Bylaws Committee conducting a thorough review and revision of the National By-laws
                                                                                                                                          to ensure that Best Practices for Non-profit organizations are being reflected. The current Constitution
                                                                                                                                          and Bylaws are being revised. Now all of us must continue to work to improve efficiency and flexibility
                                                                                                                                          in order for our Association to function in a timely and meaningful manner. The Membership needs
                                                                                                                                          to assume a broader role in the governing process to ensure accountability from the National Board of

                                                                                                                                               •   Enhance Student Recruitment and Scholarship – Strategic Goal 3. Increasing our student
                                                                                                                                          population is the lifeline for our University. We all have a responsibility to recruit students to attend
                                                                                                                                          the University. We all must subscribe to the motto: OneRecuritOne. All chapters should honor the

                                                                                                                                          request of the Student Recruitment Office and send $200.00 to assist with current student recruitment

                                                                                                                                               •     Increase Alumni Membership and Expand Marketing Efforts – Strategic Goal 4. The
                                                                                                                                          Strategic Plan details the following four objectives for this committee: (1) Develop a comprehensive
                                                                                                                                          program to introduce and expose students to the Alumni Association as freshmen with follow-up
                                                                                                                                          activities throughout their student life. (2) Institute yearly alumni luncheon for graduating seniors to
                                                                                                                                          discuss responsibilities and benefits of the Alumni Association. (3) Conduct annual surveys to assess

                                            bringing this mandate into fruition. I urge all of you to look forward to 2008 as a year that will bring
                                            unification of minds and positive attitudes that promote the changes needed to advance our Association
                                            progressively forward. What does the future hold for UAPB? What does the future hold for the UAPB
                                            National Alumni Association? Every day we go without a quality governing body is a day lost to this
