CHAPTER 3: BLOCKS

Definition
º Can be defined as a walling unit exceeding the BS dimensions
  specified for bricks.
º Its height shall not exceed either its length of 6 times its
  thickness.
º Available in clay and concrete.

Clay Blocks
º Standard size of 300 x 225 x 62.5, 75, 100 or 150mm width.
º Manufactured hollow by an extrusion process and are fired as
  for clay bricks.
º Previously the 6-cavity block has been used for the inner skin of
  cavity walls.
º The 3-cavity block is intended for partitions.
º 150mm blocks are used in warmer climates as a single leaf
  external walling with plaster and paint finish.

Concrete Blocks
º Widely use compared to clay blocks.
º Made from Portland cement, aggregates, water and sometimes
  admixtures.
º Manufactured in a wide range of standard sizes of 400 x 200 x
  75mm 215mm thick.
