          Niche Social Network Sites
   While Facebook and MySpace are among the
    better-known general online social networks, there
    are an ever-increasing number of online networks
    that have emerged for and within a wide variety of
    groups.
   Among many others, these include networks for
    academe and education, people of color, boomers,
    businesses, LGBT groups, religion, and
    researchers and scholars.
   .

          Niche Social Network Sites
   This presentation offers an overview of these on
    other niche online networks and examines the
    potential benefit they may offer to colleges and
    universities and their communities.

A social network service focuses on
the building and verifying of online
social networks for communities of
people who share interests and
activities, or who are interested in
exploring the interests and activities of
others, and which necessitates the use
of software.

Most social network services are
primarily Web-based and provide a
collection of various ways for users to
interact, such as chat, messaging,
email, video, voice chat, file sharing,

       The Social Networking Site For Scientists

 SciSpace.net is a new collaborative tool
  established by NIEeS, designed to serve the
  needs of science.
 SciSpace.net uses the Elgg software, which
  is more commonly used to support learning
  environments.
 SciSpace accounts are obtained by
  invitation from an existing member.

 Ning is an online platform for users to
  create their own social websites and social
  networks[, launched in October 2005. Ning
  was co-founded by Marc Andreessen and
  Gina Bianchini.
 Ning means "peace" in Chinese, as
  explained by Gina Bianchini on the
  company blog and it is also a surname in
  Chinese.

 Ning hopes to compete with large social
  sites like MySpace and Facebook, by
  appealing to users who want to create
  networks around specific interests or have
  limited technical skills.
 The unique feature of Ning is that anyone

     Over the past few years some colleges and universities have
begun to recognize online social networking sites as virtual
communities that offer opportunities for their faculty to interact
more directly with students. In this presentation, we will provide an
overview of Facebook, a major Web-based social networking site;
describe its major features and functionalities; and profile several
local and national projects that have utilized Facebook for engaged
instruction and learning.
