Hi folks,
CD’s Our Labor Day weekend ride to Boyer, W est Virginia was a weekend to remem ber. The
Marty & Ginnie Bell weather wa s beautiful, the roads were built for motorcycle riding. Everyone was very
relaxed, enjoying the camaraderie, the weather, the riding, and the scenery. W e traveled
approxim ate ly 900 m iles rou nd trip with out a glitch other then a flat tire on Da ve Leitch e’s
trailer while it set at the motel. How many
Goldwingers does it take to change a trailer tire? Check the photo on the W eb.
W e left the parkin g lot on Stringtow n R oad in Grove City at 5pm Friday evening Chapter U-2's website is at
and traveled south on State Rt 104 to Chillicothe where we stopped for dinner at www.devrycols.edu/gwrra
a Bob Evans Restaurant. W e continued on to Mineral W ells, W .Va. arriving at
our m otel at abou t 8:30pm . John an d Sh irley Switzer of C hap ter X was there to
greet us, they had ridden down earlier from the Logan area. Rob and Lynn
Berridge were there but had gone to bed to rest up for the next days ride. They
had ridden do wn from Lak e O ntario, Canad a, wh ere th ey had bee n on vacation.
Everyone was up early Saturday morning to enjoying the continental breakfast furnished by the Hampton Inn and getting
ready to ride. W e left Mineral W ells about 9am , headed ea st across W est Virginia. The m ountains in this part of W V are
not very large but the roads are up and down with many curves. The roads were in very good condition but most had some
gravel in the curves. W e traveled at about 40 to 45 miles per hour; this was a relaxing speed and allowed us to enjoy the
scenery. W e traveled from sm all town to small town. There are no large cities in this part of the state. The farther east we
traveled the larger the mountains became. W e were about one hour from Boyer and decided to travel to the top of Cheat
Mountain to see the Snowshoe Ski Resort and to look into the valleys below. Cheat Mountain is one of the tallest
m ounta ins in the state , at a bout 4800 fe et. J ust as we were pre paring to ascend the m ounta in, a light rain started to fall.
W e thought if we get off th e m ounta in, the ra in would probably stop . Bo y was we wrong. Half way down the m ounta in the
rain came down in buckets. It rained so hard we could barely see the road. W e spotted a new log cabin with a large front
porch. Th e cabin was em pty so we drove into the driveway, jumped o ff our W ings, ran up on the porch and stayed there
until it quit raining, which was 20-30 minutes. W e then rode onto Boyer, checked into our motel, freshened up a bit and
went to dinner.
The next morning, Sunday, everyone was up early and ready to ride. After breakfast, a few went to see the National
Observatory at Greenbank, then on to ride the Durbin Rocket, after which they headed northwest. I led the other group on
a beautiful ride through the W est Virginia and Virginia mountains. In this area, the mountains are very high and the roads
are very curvy with lots of switchbacks. Most of the roads have overlooks along the way. W e stopped at some and enjoyed
the sights. T he w eath er was g orge ous . W e traveled to Ho t Springs, V a, to see the be autiful Hom este ad H otel then to
W arm Springs, VA, to see the W arm Spring Bath Houses. They have a bath for men and one for women because m ost
bathers are nude. W e then returned to Boyer. After we freshened up a bit, we rode up the road about 4 miles to a nice
restaurant and had dinner. Everyone enjoyed their meal but was a little tired from a long day of riding through the
m oun tains a nd w as a nxious to return to our m otel for a go od n ights rest.
Monday, Jack had to be home by 3pm, so he was up at 6am and on his way back to Dublin. Later that morning the
remainder of us headed for home. W e stopped in W hite Super Springs, W V, for breakfast and on our way out of town we
passed the Greenbrier Ho tel. W e could not s ee m uch of the H ote l. Our next s top would be at T am arack lo cated in Beckle y,
W V, Off of I-64. This is a very interesting place; it is filled with arts and crafts and other items that are made in W est
Virginia only. They also have a very good place to eat. It is run by personnel from the Greenbrier Hotel. W e did not eat
because it had only been about an hour since we had breakfast. W e spent about an hour looking around and then headed
for home.
W e arrived hom e about 6:30pm Mon day evening. W OW , what a week end! R em em ber, the m ore you participate the more
fun you have.

Who? Me?! CHANGING GEARS
ACD’s
Words that have multiple meanings.....shifting up or down a gear while riding your
Chris Holmes & motorcycle.....shifting to a new and different mind set. What does changing gears mean to you?
Roxanne Shull To me it means many things, but the one upper most where my involvem ent in Chapter U-2 is
concerned is taking a back seat, when taking a back seat isn’t my style. We’re getting ready to
change gears for a new season. Fall is right around the corner, which means the weather will be
changing gears. This in turn means our riding habits will also be changing gears.
Isn’t it a wonderful thing that w e’re given the opportunity to define these words to our liking? Change, while unsettling, isn’t necessarily
a bad thing. Most often it is a good thing, especially if there is forward momentum. The end result is often times based on the way we
choose to embrace the changing gears. Even though taking a back seat isn’t my style, I’ve given it a great deal of consideration and
decided that maybe it’s not so bad after all. It provides me the option of gauging my level of involvement in particular functions
involving our chapter.
The one gear I don’t ever want to change is not one you’ll find on your four or two wheel vehicle. It’s “H”, and that doesn’t stand for hot.
For me it’s my “H”appy gear. The gear that says I’m happy to be a part of GW RRA , and to have met some of the nicest people I’ve
ever had the pleasure of meeting. Some of the best times in my life have been spent on my motorcycle joking around and teasing
some really great people. Riding a motorcycle was changing gears for me in a huge way and, happily, becoming a member of Chapter
U-2 is that forward m omentum thing I mentioned previously.
While taking a back seat isn’t my style, I’ve decided I don’t have to be the boss, I can change gears and let someone else take the
stand. And the best thing about that is the person in the front seat is the one catching all the bugs in their teeth.....
Happy riding, and here’s hoping all of your changing gears are smooth ones.

WHERE DO THOSE TOES BELONG?
Answer: Above the Lever
By James R. Davis, of the Master Strategy Group
If your feet are on your pegs you are probably doing this anyway, but an incident just occurred that reminded me
to post an article to at least raise yo ur consciousn ess level.
It seems that a rider was making a sweeping right-handed turn when the tip of his pointed-toe boot struck the
ground. This caused a massive torque to his foot and dragged it off the peg, severely injuring the ankle in the
process.
Ap parently the rider was not m ore seriously injured and he did no t lose control of his bike, but either or both
could ha ve happened in the blink of an eye.
When your feet are on the pegs your toes belong ON TOP O F the rear brake lever and
above the shifter lever. [Please note that this applies to most touring bikes where the pegs
are straight down rather than w ell forward of your sitting position. M any sport bikes are
designed such that you cannot keep your to es ab ove the brake lev er for any length of tim e
withou t extrem e aw kw ardness or cram ping .]
Being on top of the brake lever is obvious - you need it there to minimize the amount of
time it takes to activate that brake. Sometimes you simply need a different position of the
foot in order to relax it and prevent a cramp, I know - been there. Moving back on the Toe Truck (so rry)
peg so tha t the balls of that foot rest on it is fine fo r aw hile. Sometimes it makes sense to
put the heel of that foot on the peg. But it NEVER makes sense to put your toe UNDER
the brake lever, as this injury dem onstrates.
Keeping the left toe above the shifter also makes sense for the sam e reaso n.
A few weeks ago Elaine and I w ere riding on a freeway and observed another rider dangle his feet straight down in
order to 'stretch'. His feet were only a fraction of an inch above the ground when he did that. It was insane! Had a
foo t touched the ground his leg co uld have snapped in two if a peg had caught it (driver's or pa ssenger's.)
Yo u need to stretch? U se a h ighway board /peg , or stop the b ike and get off it
for a few minutes.
I guess it doesn't really have to be said, but if you are in a turn it doesn't
make sense to have your toes positioned like outriggers - pointing away from
the bike.
Keep those toes on the b rake lever and over the shifter, and you will be able
to walk after you finish the ride.
Summ er’s over, dammit, and ol’ faithful has done a good job of carting you and your co-
rider all over this great country of ours. But, alas, riding season is not done yet. After
hitting not a few bumps and craters in the road, it is time for you to crawl under the bike with a few sockets and wrenches and do
some tightening. It only takes a few minutes. And if you have one of them bike-raising gizmos, consider yourself lucky that you can do
this task easily. I’d get one, but I have a low ceiling in my garage, and could only lift the bike maybe a foot. Things to pay particular
attention to while underneath the ‘Wing are the trailer hitch, saddlebag
nuts (both inside and outside the ba gs), crashgu ard bolts, accessory
bolts and nuts, etc.. And check out the condition of the rear tire wh ilst GWRRA/MSF CHAPTER SURVEY
