E mail for work needs to be flexible and work well with Office products.
Full remote access is essential as is absolute privacy. GMail is a non-starter.
I access email on the web from home seven days a week no matter where I am.

I am at the Cardiac Center, we don't use Outlook so I did not answer those questions.
I am concerned that the steering committee does not include any members from the academic side (Academic

I use mail merge daily to email students and use it very heavily during certain periods of the year. I also refer
frequently to "sent mail" when a student is questioning when they were notified of something. This function is critical
to my office, which is the Student Employment / Federal Work Study Office.

The Financial Aid office also sends several thousands of email merge letters each year. Their entire
communications system to students is based on the ability to email mail merge letters.

I would hope that we seriously consider the legal issues that surround email. Will there be security, privacy? Can we
continue to use email as a legal source of communication? Who will be legally responsible for patient information and
privacy issues? According to the newspaper Saturday, gmail would allow users to check email from mobile devices =

It is vital to have the email live on a PDA to communicate with my physicians who travel to outreach. When I am out

The question "Would you want to load your archives into a new mail system?" is a little confusing since it is not
certain what you are asking. YES I NEED to load my archives but NO I don't WANT to have to do it (or to be the one

Those who use email and calendaring will likely adapt to a new system, if it works as good or better than the current
Big fan of gmail
Considering the role of the medical school and the VA at Creighton, the current system is very disappointing. It really
can't be used effectively at the VA. Also, its help features are very weak, making it hard to take full advantage of
Continued support of the Blackberry server is very important.
Creighton is a university. Universities have "edu" domain suffixes. For Creighton to change to gmail and lose the
"edu" suffix would announce to the universe that Creighton is too rinky-dink to be able to handle its own email and
must outsource it to google. This would be horribly embarrassing to EVERYONE who works, or attends school, at

Haven't yet heard a good reason for switching to G mail.
I am glad to see these efforts at identifying practices and requirements prior to making such an important decision.
I am happy with the current system
I am not enthusiastic at all about changing the e-mail system. The current one works fine. There will be serious
problems in changing to a GMail and future access to our in the transition. You will spare faculty and DoIT a lot of
I am very concerned aboutnew one, and much wasted timemail and have a number of related questions:

Will Google eventually be able to mine our mail for marketing purposes?

Will they be able to mine the mail of CU graduates or former employees?

Will GMail allow us to archive mail indefinitely and retrieve messages when necessary (e.g., for grant documentation,
legal questions, student/employee grievances, or any other situation where we may need to reconstruct the trail of
communication?

Does GMail work with Zix Mail to ensure HIPAA compliance?

Also, how does GMail work with CU authentication? We need this capability for research surveys, student/resident
online evaluations, etc.

Finally, the shared Outlook calendar system is not perfect, but it is useful because almost every office on campus,
except the Cardiac Center, uses Outlook rather than another product. Outlook offers many standard features that
relate to the integrated email features. DoIT has not provided sufficient information to convince us that GMail and the
scheduling "add on" will match or exceed the current level of service. If it does, this should have been part of the
sales pitch to campus.

Could students be offered a Gmail account for personal mail while the rest of the campus retains the current system,
including use of Outlook for official correspondence to students? The only "selling points" offered by DoIT to date
seem to be short-term savings if the mail servers are not replaced and GMail's jumbo-sized mail accounts for
students. It seems like students (and faculty for that matter) can already opt to use GMail or MSN or other
I am very happy with the current email and calendar used at Creighton. It would really be a shame to loose any of
the current functions we have by switching to g-mail. Since I am able to archive all my old emails and calendars
I didn't see any questions about issues with current system - I sent a long email to D. Olsen about this - here is a
repeat of it:
I just wanted to touch base and give you some feedback on our CU email. I know I am likely not the only person with
these same ideas and issues - I hope you hear from others as well.

I did not receive an email about the town meetings for the email change - I assumed it was still in the works (heard
about it last year). I would strongly support outsourcing to gmail or something like it just because of the unlimited
space and added features such as threading (which to my knowledge isn't offered in any other system). Most of my
professional colleagues already use it - and have for some time.

I have many many anecdotal stories of students who say they turned in homework on time via email - but don't have
the email to "prove" it and resubmit because they are using CU's system and due to the limitation of space, had to
delete it (I tell them to keep all class correspondances until they have received a final grade in the course). This is
definately a problem.

Another point - I have gigabites of email as a faculty member - from students (now alum) that I still contact from time
to time (guest speakers, financial supporters of events/projects, etc), from my 120 current students (I take my own
advice and keep their emails until the course is complete and they have not contested a grade), from my research
partners (research projects generally run into multi-years, so keep all of these), and people I have met at
conferences (use these over time). Obviously this adds up -

Another point - I seem to barely keep my head above the water - taking time to organize emails, delete, etc. - no time
I feel it is a big mistake to switch to google. The current e-mail system provides the appropriate security and access
I like both very much, but like others am sometimes frustrated by the limited size of the mailbox. Otherwise I find it
user-friendly and very helpful. I am open to change and welcome it, if it gives greater flexibility and meets the needs
I like the current system and don't want to depend on an outside provider, particularly if there is advertising involved.
E-mail is important enough that we ought to pay for it and support it internally.
I like the Gmail feature of being able to search an email by so many attributes, it is nice when you do not remember
the exact date, spelling of a person's name or the subject matter
I love gmail. It is easy to use; it threads conversations, it shows the first line of each email; it has tons of storage

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that we are contemplating swithing to another provider other than Outlook. I
despised switching to blueline from blackboard for a number of reasons (and had to waste a significant amount of

It's VERY slow; lots of hiccups in service.
I've never made any secret of the fact that I find the current CUmail system completely inadequate and
unacceptable. As it happens, Gmail and Gcal are the applications I use instead of the Exchange-based system on

Email and Calendar is a critical system of the University, therefore any change needs to be carefully considered by

is the LEAST expensive product availalbe on the market today. Many very confidential communications occur via

For #s 6 and 8, "Would you want to load..." do you mean that we would have to load these files into the new system
ourselves? I guess if it was easy to do, I wouldn't mind but would rather not.

Overall, I am very pleased with Outlook and the phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes quickly to mind.
Generally speaking, I believe the pros outweigh the cons for switching to Gmail.

I feel this would be great for our students, and with them off exchange i imagine it would allow us to up the space for

I often get notices that my email is at capacity and would like more room
I prefer Gmail in general as their system is being constantly improved and is flexible. I like the storage, labels and

I really like Outlook. I also have tried the Google gmail and it is not user friendly at all. I rarely check my messages

In answering this survey, I was often unsure about what the question referred to -- eg "personal files"? I've given my

The folders feature in Outlook is very important and I would want to be able to move what's currently in my folders

The items at the beginning of this survey are indeed very important, I would not want to lose any of these functions.

There are several critical functions necessary to perform my duties such as offline access view of calendars, and
email; and other features such as global address look up's that are extremely helpful in my work.
There were some questions in this survey I didn't understand. I would have appreciated more explanation.
We have the need to transfer large files, many with graphics.
We need a larger e-mail accounts. They also should not be tied to your phone.
We receive documents for printing through email and need to be able to receive huge documents, if possible.
We use our email and calendars often for meetings, and contacting our students.
Although I have a Google Calendar, it is currently syncing only 1 of 2 calendars that I keep in Outlook. This is purely
a backup method. I use many of the Outlook Calendar/multiple calendar features, email group appointment
scheduling for group class project meetings, and voting buttons in the email. If these features are available in the
Chat feature would be awesome
Current email system is terrible on the mac as it is devoid of all useful features. The need to delete everything twice
and individually has cost me dozens of hours deleting the email, then deleting it again, then deleting the email that I
sent, just to free up my limited amount of email storage so that my email will function. Gmail is already my primary
email address and it is infinitely better than the nonsense creighton forces us to put up with. Its like the joke goes:
Currently have Gmail and Google Calendar. Use both of them daily and really like the functionality. I also receive
many e-mails each day that I want to save, so I have them automatically forwarded from my Creighton e-mail to my

Get G-mail period. It is better in every capacity than any other e-mail service.
G-mail is amazing on so many levels. For distance students the use of video and voice chat is wonderful. The ease
of sharing calendars is fantastic. The ability to use devices such as an ipod touch to check e-mail is great. Finally
cost. Using gmail to host mail can save thousands of dollars each year in costs. Finally it is very user friendly
Gmail is far superior to the current email system. The benefits clearly outweigh the negatives, and with the update
from Gmail allowing one to work offline it will be much easier to access and reply to emails.
Gmail is worlds better than Outlook.
Gmail would be huge. Please make this happen
Gmail would be so, so much better for me as the president of a large student organization. We use google calendar,
google docs, gmail, and other services already because of the collaborative nature, and the ease of accessibility to
GMail would provide much more memory space which is my biggest problem now. Also, I have a GMail ap on my

gmail's thread system, document capabilities, task manager, and exporting features make it superior to outlook

Having to use outlook for cumail has greatly hindered my ability to smoothly and effectively sinc multiple devices,
especially since most of my "devices" are made by Apple. I think many students could say the same.
How will this affect alumni that are still using their Creighton accounts?
I am content with the current email system because it allows me to keep my academic emails and personal emails
separate. Also, I like the security of having Outlook Express for school-related emails. Therefore, I do not support
I am just concerned about having the e-mails that are currently in my inbox appear in the new account's inbox.
I believe that the oppurtunities that gmail allows students such as larger space, gchat, calendar, and simple interface
would be beneficial as long as we can keep our archive of email and global contacts list.
I dislike the complications involved with opening my university emails when I am not on campus through my phone or

I do not like the setup of the current email system. I would like the university to switch over to gmail.
I don't like change. Keep it the way it is.
I don't mind the current system, I just wish I could access the emails in Outlook through secure POP3, or IMAP,
instead of auto-forwarding creighton email to my gmail account which is then downloaded into outlook.

If, instead of an exchange 2003 system, Creighton used an Exchange 2007 system, everyone could use the outlook
anywhere feature to enable secure exchange/outlook functionality (including all calendaring and meeting scheduling
functionality) without the headache of vpn. I have setup this kind of system a few times, and my customers have
I hate the outlook system. The e-mail system is just really ugly and i wish there were a way to forward all my e-mail

I have both my Creighton email on Outlook and I also have a Gmail account. I like both equally.

Also, would we still have to use the Postini service for our junk mail?
I have friends who attend Notre Dame and the University of Virginia. Both Universities use GMail as their primary
email network. I have been told that GMail has worked flawlessly for these students, who make heavy use of the

I have used Gmail for my personal account for several years and absolutely love it. I would really like to see Gmail

I have used gmail in the pass and really don't care for it. I think it is confusing
I hope our email does not change because as professional students we are able to order business cards. Our
creighton email address is on the cards and we just received them.
I hope the new email system allows for more emails than the current one. I hate getting those emails telling me that
I like the current email just fine. I have never used the Calendar system myself.
I like the mail system we use now. Please keep it otherwise I will have to figure out how to use the new one all over
i like the power of Outlook. i currently have a personal email account, and the one from CU ... both automatically

that, i don't mind which system you want to explore. as a distance student, i am required to "manage myself" and if
you start messing with that, it will just create more work. i assure you ...... i do NOT need any more work. thank you
I like what we have today!

I love outlook and I would really not like to switch accounts. I would hate to change my email address considering
that all my contacts have my current email. That would be a big pain.

I love the current system, but I wish I could have more storage space!
I only use Mozilla Firefox as an internet browser, and Outlook is absolutely hopeless when accessed with Firefox (I
need remote access) - marking as new and moving to folders takes too many steps. I also find gmail's placing of
I really enjoy how well outlook works with the current email and Calendar. I like that if you know how to use one you
know how to use the other. I personally have a gmail account but do not care to use it.
I really enjoy the Outlook interface. I have come to rely heavily on it's features and appearance.
I really haven't had any problem with this system. It works fine.
I really like the Outlook system.
I really need the calender capabilities as well as the shared calender capabilities available. When setting up
meetings with groups of people it is necessary. Also so many students have their calendars on outlook if we lost
I think Gmail has many awesome options that allow me to organize and keep on top of things.
I think it is important to have a creighton.edu email address.
I think the e-mail and calendar system we currently use at Creighton is great. I would NOT be in support of a change
to a different e-mail system. The e-mail and calendar interface through Outlook 2007 is the best I have ever used. A
I think the space provided through gmail would be a positive thing but you need to allow for people to make folders
I use both Gmail and Creighton's email accounts. I love how well gmail syncs with my iphone. Furthermore, I was
able to put my Blueline Calender onto my iphone which made life a whole lot easier by sending it to my calendar on
my mac and then to my gmail calendar. Unfortunately, blueline does not auto sync. I really hope that we can switch
to gmail. Google offers so many additional features in their suite of applications. Everything is seamless and easy to
I use Gmail ALOT. I would truly appreciate if Creighton did the merge!!
I use Gmail and Google calendar as my primary resource for keeping my life together. All the appointments and
important emails I have through the Creighton Outlook system I have sent to my Google accounts. I therefore think
I use gmail as well as outlook on a regular basis. i like gmail - the buttons are easy to find/use, i can chat with other

I would like the university to switch to gmail and google calendar, or allow pop3 access. I want all my email accounts
I would like to integrate my personal and school email and calenders via gmail.
I would love to be able to sync my OWA to my PC's outlook
I would only be satisfied with the switch to Gmail if it would be compatible with Outlook.
I would really hate a move to anything other than Outlook. I strongly believe and have seen that the majority of
corporations and professionals use Outlook for their email. It's easy to use and highly compatible!
I wouldnt mind a switch to Google as long as when you become an alumini at Creigton you are allowed to keep your
email upon graduation for over a year, because I feel that that would be vital and would make the switch much more
inviting for some...Google also offers a lot of great programs and I actually already hgave a Gmail account so the

It is good as it is.
it must support POP3.
It needs to be compatible with other calendar systems--particularly iCal for the mac.
It's very small and easy to have it fill up.
Keep it the same, everyone is going to hate changing to something new and unfamiliar
Last semester i introduced a group of classmates to Gmail and Docs. Everyone loved it. Google Doc's helped us
comprise a detailed study guide in real time that we collectively worked on. During our study sessions, at any given
moment, there was at least 5 of us sitting around a table actually enjoying the ease of which we were able to work
Many features of the current email system do not work with firefox, such as flagging emails and accessing folders
more space in the inbox would be nice so we don't miss e-mails or have trouble sending them out
Need to be able to set a rule to forward all my email to another account.
Nice job on the survey.
Outlook is efficient, easy to learn, and easy to use. I feel that switching would be more costly and an unnecessary
hassle. I think outlook should be left alone and used as Creighton's primary e-mail system.
outlook is horrible. It loses email, it takes forever to get a new email, it is a huge pain to sync to a mobile device, its
ridiculously complicated......overall: its AWFUL.
Gmail is fantastic. I've been using it for 4 years, its easy to organize, customize, its calendar is so easy.
The google docs feature is fantastic as well.
Overall, google's email is far easier, has a ridiculous amount of storage, and its overall just a better system.
Outlook is slow, clunky and unwieldy. I use gmail privately and enjoy it much more.
Outlook is very inconvenient and hard to use, I would much rather use gmail so you can flag mail that you want to
Over the past 4 years, I've felt no need to use my Outlook for anything more than emailing and storing some
addresses in the Contacts. I don't use the calendar (although some students do) and only make meeting requests
Please change to Gmail. =D
Please just keep the one we presently have.
Please let us just use our gmail accounts. Outlook is crap. Gmail is so much better. Let's switch! Please!
please switch to gmail, outlook does not fulfill my needs as a student.
Please switch to Gmail. It is more open to ALL OS's
Regardless of whether we switch to Gmail or not, there needs to be some way to increase the size of student
Since gmail is my primary e-mail I would definitely support switching.
Size capacity - huge issue for me - need more space for attachments
stick with exchange
Survey hard to read
switch to gmail!!!!
switch to google asap. It is absurd to believe that with hard disk space being so cheap that we would have a limit on
our inbox size. And if we lose any services as a result of the switch just put a similar function on blueline.
Switching to Gmail would be a big mistake. Doing so would forfeit the functionality and ease-of-use provided by
Microsoft Outlook. While Gmail is a decent basic email service, it does not have the options and capabilities that
Thank you and good luck!
The current email service is unwieldy and very difficult to use. Outlook is incredibly slow, as is the online version that
we currently use. I use gmail privately and recommend it highly.
The current exchange configuration is extremely valuable and important to me as a medical student with the ability to
access important e-mail and shared calendars with my windows mobile device and its ability to sync with webmail
and outlook. It is my belief the University would be doing itself a great disservice to end this functionality. I do
believe the more education to the general student population regarding the power and functionality of outlook would
The most important thing to me is the use of my calendar. The google calendar is EXTREMELY inefficient and is not
as user friendly as outlook (small example: color coding items--in google you have to build different calendars to get
different colors) The convenience of adding a meeting and set reoccurrence is so convenient and easy. It makes
The Outlook system is very user-friendly and extremely useful for setting up meeting times

Viewing the current email system in Firefox is terrible and very fustrating.
