Sally Ride Science Camps provide:
an exclusive sally ride science curriculum designed to engage and empower girls
■
a supportive girls-only environment
■
lots of hands-on learning activities and experiments not found in school
■
a chance to meet great role models — female scientists & science teachers
■
three “major” subjects to choose from during camp, including astronomy,
marine science, and robotics
Education Unlimited® and Sally Ride Science™ have partnered
to provide outstanding Sally Ride Science Camps for girls
entering grades 4–9 this summer!
Sally Ride Science™ was founded by pioneering astronaut Sally
Ride to support the large numbers of girls and young women
who are (or might become) interested in science, math and
engineering — and provide this support in ways that they will
find interesting and entertaining. Education Unlimited® was
founded in 1993 with the mission of giving every high school
student the best possible chance of gaining admission to the
college of their choice. Today, Education Unlimited® is the leading
summer academic enrichment program provider in the nation.
Together, we will offer nine sessions of Sally Ride Science
Camps on five prominent university campuses this summer.
“It was an awesome experience. I got to
spend a week and a half doing science,
making friends – all at camp!”
Katherine Karwoski, 9th grade Sally Ride Science camper

Dear Students and Parents, table of contents
I would like to take this opportunity to invite all young women Curriculum Overview 4
entering 4th – 9th grades to participate in our 2007 Sally Ride Major Topics 4
Science Camps. These unique and innovative programs are Sample Schedule 5
designed to encourage girls’ interests in science, engineering, and Faculty 6
technology in a supportive and fun environment. Dates and Prices 6
Our goal is to foster girls’ natural interests in science by Facts at a Glance 7
giving them the hands-on science learning that is often not found Application 8
in school. By participating in workshops, labs, and activities,
girls will build confidence in themselves and learn that science is
interesting, exciting, and a lot of fun!
An all-girls environment gives young women the opportunity
to explore their science interests in single-gender groups, and it
provides them with the experience of living and working with
female science professionals, teachers, and students in a
encouraging community setting.
Sally Ride Science Camps have been very popular over the last
few summers and we will continue to hold our programs at the
University of California, Berkeley, the University of San Diego,
and Stanford University. We are also pleased to be hosting new
sessions of the programs at Caltech and the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology. Experienced and inspiring staff will supervise and
instruct girls during the program.
Any young woman who is curious about science, technology
and engineering should be encouraged to explore her interests.
Providing opportunities for science learning in the home, at
school, and outside of school can engage her and inspire her
excitement for science. Attending a Sally Ride Science Camp is
one way to encourage girls’ interests. To learn more about other
ways to involve girls in science, engineering and technology, go to
www.SallyRideScience.com.
If you choose to take the opportunity to enroll in a Sally
Ride Science Camp this summer, please mail in the enclosed
application soon. Space is limited, and we accept applications on
a first-come, first-served basis.
I wish that I would have had the opportunity to attend a
program like this when I was younger!
Sincerely,
Sally Ride

Sally Ride Science Camps encourage girls’ interests in science
by giving them hands-on science learning and activities in an
environment that is designed to be supportive, enriching, and — most
importantly — fun! These unique, overnight camps provide girls
an opportunity to explore science, technology, and engineering
while having fun on a college campus.
Core Curriculum All students attend a morning lab session in
their Major subject, which includes science instruction, lab work
and techniques, and individual and group work on projects
and problems. In the afternoons, students attend enrichment
activities and workshops designed to build their confidence, science
knowledge, leadership skills and teamwork abilities. In the
evenings, girls participate in supervised recreational activities.
8th and 9th Grade Program For 8th and 9th graders, we have
created an advanced and extended version of our program to provide
girls with extra time to explore our unique majors and activities.
Science Majors Each student will choose a Major, which will
be the main focus area of her morning lab sessions. This year,
we offer three exciting majors, each of which culminates in a
substantial project (marked in bold)*.
In the Astronomy major, scientists will:
■ Simulate the Big Bang theory
■ Use a pinhole camera to measure the diameter of the sun
■ Study the surface of the sun
■ Make spectrometers and explore light and diffraction
■ Learn about constellations and star lore
■ Investigate the orbital mechanics of the International
Space Station
■ Launch and safely retrieve ‘eggstronauts’ using water rockets
In the Marine Science major, scientists will
■ Explore major marine habitats
■ Write and perform phylum dramas
“The attitudes and energy of the camp
administration was really good. They were
always willing to help and were really
energetic.” Shannon Pai, 7th grade SRS camper
