Major Milestones for
USM Nursing Program
                                                                     from the president
                                        Dear Friends and Alums,

Summertime at Saint Mary is a time of transition and planning. While we said
a very difficult goodbye to our beloved academic vice president, Dr. Sandra Van
Hoose, on June 30, we said hello to Dr. Bryan Le Beau, who began July 1 as the
new academic vice president. Bryan comes to us with 19 years of experience in
Catholic higher education entrenched in the liberal arts tradition. Sandra said,
“I leave this job in very capable hands.”
We are in the midst of building a small football/soccer complex so our football
team can play at home. The breaking straw was last fall when one of the freshman
football players got lost coming home from a home football game played in Platte
City, Mo.! The Board of Trustees agreed it was time to bring the Spires football
team home. The construction of the press box and the bleachers is under the
supervision of our facilities director, Mark Gieseman, with lots of labor donated by
                                        the coaches.
On June 25, we launched our new sports website, You’ll be able to
watch the construction progress of our football/soccer complex on a weekly basis.
We’re planning some alumni celebrations to coincide with our first home men’s and
women’s soccer games on Aug. 23 and our very first “home” home game for our
Spires football team on Sept. 20.
In May, Pam McNally was named the new vice president of development. Pam
has 19 years of fundraising experience. Most recently she was the senior director
at Truman Medical Center Charitable Foundation. Pam is looking forward to
meeting USM alumni, friends, and supporters. She and the development staff are
excited about future projects at USM.
With God’s grace, we are moving the educational mission of the Sisters of
Charity at Saint Mary into the next 150 years! Join us in giving thanks to our
gracious God for the blessings of the past 150 years.

                                        Blessings to each of you.

On May 10, the University of
Saint Mary welcomed more than
350 friends, alumni, and benefactors
to a lively evening at the Hyatt
Regency Crown Center, in Kansas
City, Mo. for SpireFest – USM’s lead
fundraiser for student scholarships.
SpireFest raised more then $138,000

Providing Peace and Happiness By Molly Sirridge, C’75

In May of 2006, I received a call from our Overland
Park campus informing me they had heard from a Mr.
Jim Dhooghe and he wanted to talk to someone about
giving a donation to the University of Saint Mary. This
interest intrigued me. He was not an alum and had never
given to USM before. I picked up the phone and called
him, thus beginning a year of getting to know one of the
most generous men I have ever met.
What prompted Jim to call Saint Mary that day
was the loss of his long time friend, Jean Gerwick.
Jean and Jim had been close friends for over 40 years
and all of Jim’s life savings was to go to Jean. Little
did they know that Jean would be struck with ovarian
cancer and pass away before Jim. To say the least, Jim
was lost. He not only lost his beloved Jean, he now had
to reallocate his estate.
After getting to know Jim, I learned of not only
his deep love for Jean, but also his deep belief in
the Catholic faith and education. After many talks,
he decided to establish the Jean Gerwick Endowed
Scholarship. The thought of a young student receiving
much needed financial assistance year after year through Jim Dhooghe
Jean’s scholarship gave him peace and happiness.
The more Jim and I talked about the University
of Saint Mary, the more excited he became about
supporting our mission. Jim passed away on April 30,
2007, leaving the University of Saint Mary and the
Jean Gerwick Endowed Named Scholarship in his will.
Through his legacy, we have now received the second
largest bequest in USM’s history. His gift will help many
young students for years to come.
I miss my visits with Jim but take comfort in
knowing that he and Jean are looking down from
heaven smiling and checking on those students who are
receiving her scholarship.
Farewell good friend. You have left a legacy that will
live on.

2nd Annual High School Global Human Rights
Conference Highlights Sudan’s Darfur Conflict

One hundred nine students from eight area high schools
discovered that negotiating peace in Darfur is more complicated
than they first thought. Students participated in mock negotiations
to bring peace to the Darfur region of Sudan in the 2nd Annual
High School Global Human Rights Conference at the University of
Saint Mary on Tuesday, April 22.
The conference was sponsored and organized by the university’s
Lawrence D. Starr Global Studies Institute (GSI). Saint Mary
students from the Advanced International Peace Building course
(taught by Natalie Reigg, professor of political science and global
studies) briefed the high school students and facilitated the conflict
resolution exercises. Students from eight area high schools

Students from each high school advocated for an interested
party in negotiations regarding the Darfur conflict, which traces
its origins back to 1650 in Sudan, a West African country. Students
walked away with a broader understanding of the conflict.
“It was wonderful seeing our plan unfolding,” said USM
sophomore Michaela Forge. “The high school students threw
themselves into the project.”
Next year, GSI will focus on raising awareness about Diaspora
or Global Migration.

Saint Mary Tradition

          honor roll of donors
               July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008
from the president

As Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth and associates, we gathered over the Fourth of July
weekend to celebrate our founding and call to ministry in the future. Over 400 strong we
visited the cemetery to honor our founding pioneer sisters, the very sisters who opened Saint
Mary’s Academy that has grown into the University of Saint Mary. We proceeded to the
chapel where strong and strange call of the ram’s horn announced our jubilee just as it did
in biblical times. We gave thanks for all that has been in prayer, song, and dance and we
dreamed of our future, knowing all is in God’s hands.

We gathered on our sacred ground, the campus of the University of Saint Mary and the
Mother House. We at the university are blessed to still serve in the original buildings.
Walking the halls of Saint Mary and Mead, one still feels the spirit of those who walked
them before us. They remind us that mission comes first and that God will provide all that
we need.

Historically, the sisters have always relied on God’s providence. As I remind the folks at Saint
Mary again and again, if we do God’s work, God will provide. And God so often provides
through your generosity. Your commitment to Saint Mary’s educational mission allows us
to continue the founding educational mission of the sisters. We are proud to serve so many
first generation students, the first in their families to have the opportunity to graduate from
college. Most of these students also have great financial need. Your support of the scholarship
fund makes it possible for these students to realize their dreams and for us to continue in
history the educational mission of the Sisters of Charity into the next 150 years.
