Our 2009-2010 year has started. For the past three years, we have made “All State” and, if we work hard as a team, I see no reason why we can’t make it four in a row, . Our new State (Department) Commander Capt. Jack Turner’s motto is “All Gave Some, Some Gave All”. As you know, that refers to the sacrifice that you and your families gave during your time in service. I am now asking you one more time to step up and sacrifice some of your time and talent to our Post. I know that some have limitations on what they can do, but all can do something. We need to re-think the small member cliques that have slowly evolved. It is not Team A against Team B, etc. It should be all for Team 7907. We have a great Post with great members, so please think about, “All Gave Some, Some Gave All”, and ask what “you” can do to improve our Post. Thank you.
Dear Sisters, Congratulations! Our auxiliary has received eight (8) awards from the District and another five (5) from Department. Our hard work also resulted in the All State Auxiliary President award. Thank you to our Program Chairmen who worked so hard this year to make this all happen. As we start another year, I am sure that we can accomplish the same great results. I visited with Linda Miller last week and she is improving each day. It was so good to see her smiling and joking again. Our School of Instruction will be on Saturday, July 11th at the Don Diego Post. I hope that a number of you will be able to attend. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, July 14th.

Hello fellow VFW members! I want to thank all of you for your support of me as the new Senior Vice Commander for the Post. It is a great honor and I look forward to serving. A quick update about me for those of you that I haven’t met. I have been a member of this Post for the last two years. My wife, Eva and I have 6 kids and 2 grandchildren. I retired after 37 years with the US Postal Service 5 years ago .....at one point in that career I was the District Manager for all USPS operations in Southern California from 1993-2000. I am a US Army veteran having served in the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam in 1969-1970. I am very proud to be a veteran and even more proud to assist those brothers/sisters in need of our help. In closing, our VFW is faced with a lot of challenges and I view membership as being the “life blood” of our organization. I am going to work hard during my time as Senior Vice Commander to bring new members into our group .......there are veterans out there who are just waiting to be asked to join, so I encourage all of you to be active in this regard. I appreciate all that you have done serving our country and your continuation of service by being a member of a great organization and assisting the veteran community. Please feel free to contact me or give me any feedback you may have about our group, our organization or our impact on the veteran community at large. Have a great day! The Annual Stand Down for Veterans will be from the July 17th to the 19th at San Diego High School. Volunteers are always welcome. We have taken the Buddy Poppy Cards down. If you would like yours, please pick it up at the Post. Thank you.
Hello #1 Post 7907 News has it that we (Ladies Auxiliary) made All-State in District #1. Way to Go, Madame Prez. I am sure our next year will be just as great, if not better. Ladies, we need to keep Mary Lou Sonntag in our prayers. She is having breathing problems. I have not seen her, but her good friend Joe has kept me informed of what’s going on. Get well soon, Mary Lou. I hope everyone has a wonderful 4th. Be sure to see the Del Mar Fair. Lots of cool stuff there. Until next month, God Bless and take care.
For those of you who may know them, Allan and Maudine Chaffin visited our Post on June 14th and 15th.
Thank you to the following members for joining the House Committee: Bob Hylton, Jeff Carmichael, Mike Heinly, Tom Brenton and Dave Valley. I look forward to working with all of you. Next House Committee meeting with be at 7 p.m. following the Officers’ Meeting on July 9th. Thank you.
Friday night, June 19th was “Country Night” at the VFW, and what a night it was. Ken Stonecipher from Guymon, Oklahoma headlined a night of entertainment and fun, and was joined on stage by Red Schwabauer, Charlie Behle and Steve Minick. As some of you may know, Red played in a country band years ago, and was also a part of a group of VFW members that played regularly in posts all over the area. The “Post Toasties” as they were called, were very popular, and always had a lot of fun. However, before Friday, Red had not picked up his guitar in about a year. “I was a little out of practice,” he said, “ but I sure had a good time.” The following Sunday at breakfast, he mentioned that his fingers still hurt. Charlie made his stage debut Friday night, and had a great time doing it. An accomplished singer and guitar player, until Friday he had always just played by himself. “And I have to watch it almost every night!” remarked his wife, Chris. Charlie entertained the crowd with his nice singing voice and guitar styling. “This is the first time I’ve ever played in front of a crowd,” Charlie said. When asked by several post members if he would come out and entertain without Ken and Red, he said “I doubt it!” Steve Minick’s dad, Bill was also very popular on the “Post Circuit”. Thank you, Steve for sitting in. We enjoyed having you. Ken, son of Don and Mary entertained the crowd with country favorites both old and new. “I really enjoyed playing at the Post,” he said “the crowd there is always friendly and fun, and they know how to have a good time. It was a pleasure to play with Charlie, Red and Steve; they really added a lot to the evening. Of all the places I’ve ever played, the Poway VFW sure is one of them!” Ken asked if he could get on the event calendar for next summer. We will have to wait and see. Thanks to all that helped to make the night successful, from the dinner to the bar to the “solid gold dancers”. You are all appreciated!
