MAKING NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION A SUCCESS
The FYC WolfPact
Explore, Engage, Excel: Embrace Your Future
The First Year College WolfPact encapsulates our work and our values. Your student will see the WolfPact woven into the USC 101 and 102 courses, forum events, and programming in the FYC Village. We are excited about what this communicates to you, the parents, as well as to our newest group of students. Your students can smooth their way through New Student Orientation (NSO) and get ready for the fall semester by completing the following tasks. Before NSO, they should: Complete the online FYC pre-orientation form at www.ncsu.edu/fyc/forms/ pre_orientation_survey_0 9.html Take the online math placement test at https:// www.webassign.net/ncsu/ math.html and print out their results. Take the online English placement test at http:// english.chass.ncsu.edu/ undergraduate/ first_year_writing/ self_assessment/ and print out their results. Make copies of AP and IB test scores and transcripts from any college, university, community college, or fast forward program they have attended. FYC advisers appreciate having this information at NSO – it helps us guide the students better. During NSO, they must: Attend the FYC Session and meet their adviser the afternoon of the 1st day. Review info they receive from their adviser and prepare a list of courses. They should write out any questions they have, too. Meet their FYC adviser the morning of the 2nd day to confirm course preferences and placement. Register for fall courses at their scheduled time in the computer lab. Pick up a copy of the NC State summer reading book, Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson, at the University bookstore. Orientation Counselors will make sure students know where to go, and students should ask their adviser about any concerns they have. Please note: Because we want each student to have an equal chance at advising and registration time, parents cannot accompany students into the computer lab, and cell phones are not allowed during registration. After NSO The advising relationship starts at Orientation. We’re here to answer questions and to get the year off to a good start! In the weeks before the fall semester, students should: Read Three Cups of Tea and complete the summer assignment. If their fall schedule is incomplete, follow the FYC adviser’s directions for completing it. Keep in contact with their adviser, and respond promptly when contacted. Students shouldn’t change their schedules without first consulting their adviser.
FYC Meet and Greet Parents and families are invited to the FYC Meet and Greet to enjoy dessert, see the FYC Commons Building, and meet the FYC advisers 6:30 – 7:30 pm the 1st evening of NSO FYC Commons first floor
Welcome to First Year College
Welcome to North Carolina State University and to First Year College! The FYC advisers and staff look forward to meeting you and to working with our new students. FYC is known for its close and supportive relationship between advisers and students; we want to help your students make a successful transition from high school to college, to learn how to choose a major, and to explore careers. Parents are an important part of the students’ support system while they become independent students and young adults. At New Student Orientation the Director of FYC, Ms. Carrie McLean, will hold a session to answer your questions, and you can meet with our Parent Leadership Network – ―old hands‖ at shepherding sons and daughters through their first year. The students will meet with their FYC advisers to understand their course placement and to register for fall courses.

What’s Next?
Path to the Pack
First Year College and University Housing invite all FYC Village residents to a spectacular two-day Orientation event just for them. Events begin on Move-In Day (Saturday, August 15th) at 6:30 p.m. with The Amazing Race: Discovery challenge on Tucker Beach, and continue on Sunday with special FYC Village Orientation activities. Your students won’t want to miss it!
Parent Leadership Network
The Parent Leadership Network (PLN) gives parents opportunities to support FYC and its students. It’s a place for you to offer your expertise and talents, and to make suggestions while you learn more about educating today’s freshmen. This past year the PLN participated in Parents’ Weekend, sponsored a career fair and an end of school activity, and is assisting with orientation. The upcoming year will be busy and exciting — we hope you’ll join us! To join, sign up at NSO, and please become a part of the FYC Family by going to: http://www.ncsu.edu/fyc/ parents_partners/ For more info, contact Millie Herget at millie_herget@ncsu.edu
