Summer Field Trip to Frog Lake
Reported by Heidi Badger
Imagine…a thickly forested area, cool shade under the canopy of trees, birds singing, fresh clean air, a carpet of colorful flowers and funny looking mushrooms…this was our experience at Frog Lake. I wish you could have been there to experience the peace, the refreshing walk, the fun interactions of friends, the delight of holding tiny frogs and the feel of the lake water along the shoreline.
Shawn Morford from Warm Springs Extension shared a talk on being good stewards of the forest, backpacking safety supplies, and water purifiers; while Merle Kirk, 4-H Program Assistant from Warm Springs Extension, shared the history of the land in Mt. Hood/ Pacific Crest Trail area and its people.
Coming soon two more summer field trips; August 4 and 11th, check out the information above.

Madras Produce Tour
Report by Heidi Badger
Each year 4-H Clubs have the opportunity to select members in their club to receive the Madras Produce Award, which recognizes personal growth. A certificate is given to recipients at Recognition Night in the fall and an activity is planned. This year produce tour winners spent an educational and fun day in Warm Springs. We started at the Warm Springs Museum were we read, watched and observed the self guided tour through time, ceremonies and traditions of the tribal people of our area. It was a moving enjoyable experience for all of us. We shared a picnic and then finished the day swimming at Kah-Nee-Ta. I believe all who participated felt the tour was well worth the hard work they put into the 2007-08 4-H year. I think if you asked any of these young people, they would advise you to go for it, work hard, put your best effort into your projects and you will find the rewards worthwhile.
Livestock Education Day
Livestock Education Day was held on June 13th at the Rodriguez Annex. Don Hanson, DVM, State Veterinarian, gave a presentation on Animal Health with information on some of the current health concerns for livestock. Barbi Riggs, Crook County Livestock Extension Agent, also presented educational information on how to feed market animals and horses. It was a very informative couple of hours and those who attended received some good information.
Family Fun—Dad’s Day Out! June 20th at the Culver Fire Hall
Mike Dove and Jeremy Puckett taught a step by step lesson on how to tie artificial flies for June’s Family Fun Project. The techniques and demonstration were clear understandable lessons and everyone involved felt successful and came away with their own handmade artificial fly. Along with the fly tying lesson in the next room some very young kids were introduced to the art of designing, building, and working as a team with Lego’s. To top the fun filled evening off, Tim McCormick introduced many of the families to an alternative way to cook, Dutch oven style; its not only for camping but can easily be done in you own back yard! Tim covered food safety, alternative substitutes when ingredients are missing, seasoning, maintenance and care of a Dutch oven, good recipe books to look for, and advice on how to make Dutch oven cooking a fun family affair. Every one involved felt June’s Family Fun night made a positive impact on their lives and it gave dad’s a new exciting opportunity to take part in the family cooking by using a Dutch oven.
