BAM! Newsletter A Word from the Prez... The more time I spend in triathlon the more I realize I don't know very much about triathlon, or more accurately, I don't know very much about training. I've spent 6 years learning about this stuff, most of that time I spent coaching others. In an academic setting I would be a candidate for a Ph.D. I’m sorry if I screwed any of you up! Instead, I'm at best a neophyte. I started as a runner then a run coach, I thought I had that down pretty well, but now that I've met many great athletes and many formally trained and certified coaches that actually know what they are talking about - I know I don't. I use to think I knew how to train on the bike. But the same is true for riding. I have spent the last three years wearing myself out riding hundreds of miles a week and because I was not riding the right way I was not getting the best benefit from my time. Swimming, well I'm just a terrible swimmer and that's not going to change. Thank goodness the geniuses that invented this sport left the swim as the shortest part. In all seriousness, I am thankful that I had several real swimmers that were patient with me in the beginning. Those swimmers helped me get over the terrible habits I had initially formed. I'm also very thankful for the racers I swim with now. Without them I'd still be towing an anchor around the lake. I am thankful for the runners at the CLHS track, my Sunday IM riders, and the roadies at the paperclip. Lastly, I am thankful that I found a coach that can tell me how to go longer, stronger, and get faster. You have heard it before, if you keep doing the same old thing, you will just keep getting the same old results. If you want to be faster and stronger, you will need to break out of your routine. Try riding with a different group or running at the track with other runners. Swim with a group of swimmers faster than you or join a master's swim program. Ride with riders what will challenge your endurance or pace a little. If you really want to turbo charge your results, hire a coach. There are several good ones in the area. Ask someone who uses a coach to see if they like the interaction. Ask how their coach sets up their training and what they like and dislike about his/her style. They will be able to help you decide what is best for you. The cost is between $80-$100 per month. Nutritional guidance and testing is usually extra but also well worth it. Bike Clinic On Saturday June 6th, BAM hosted our bike clinic at South Shore Fitness center in League City with the purpose of targeting the intermediate rider to help them find a way to ride faster and longer without increased effort. We had three very knowledgeable speakers who all contributed information on a broad range of topics. Johnny Zepeda talked about bike positioning, bike fitting, and what priority to put on upgrades to get the most for your money. He also delved into the “Carbon Fiber vs. Aluminum” discussion, and how to differentiate and identify the different grades of carbon fiber. Mark Brooker, a three time Kona qualifier, added some of his personal insights, and demonstrated on the trainer, while Johnny explained the points of his discussion. Mark had our attention early, when he talked about his bike time at Ironman Brazil being 4 hours 45 minutes. Being an outstanding time, it contributed to him being the first American to finish that event - When it comes to cycling, he knows what he is talking about. Gaye Koenning then talked about the advantages of training with power meters, and the pros and cons of several different brands available on the market. She also talked about different training plans, and the pitfalls and remedies that can be encountered with each. She then went on to give a nutrition lecture. One of the most enlightening things of the day was when Gaye put Johnny on the trainer and had him demonstrate several different mechanical styles of peddling. Peddling in a concentric circle, instead of the push/pull up and down method, produced the most RPM's with the same amount of effort. Insight gained from the clinic has helped several BAM! Members already - due to the clinic and the information that Johnny, Mark, and Gaye shared with us. Special thanks to our President Todd O'Neal and Matt Ney for helping lug that huge cooler of drinks in and out to the truck, and of course a HUGE round of applause to our very own "MOB", Cathy Modaro, without whom, this clinic, and many of the BAM activities we enjoy, would not have been possible -Cleve Meacham As heard on the discussion board… From one of our BAM! We’re looking forward to seeing you at other local events! To all of our volunteers - thanks for taking timeout of your busy weekends to support your fellow triathletes! To everyone - we encourage you help out at our local events, if you’re not a participant. The folks who put on our local events couldn’t do it without the help of volunteers. When we support them, they keep the events local, so that we can participate without having to travel halfway across Texas (or Harris County) to participate in an event.
