Membership Meeting june 2009 Wiz Words Hopefully, the rains are no longer with us and everyone is out there riding. After all, the month of June is BAK, the Oklahoma Freewheel, and many more. June is one of my favorite months to bicycle because the sun is usually out, but it is not typically scorching hot. Everyone is in a good mood because we can BIKE. We can think about evening rides because it is light until quite late. There is no reason to sit in the house. Save that for the chill of winter. When you get out there, bring a friend. Many of us know people who are always thinking about biking, but seldom get to it. Give them a call, invite them along, stay with them, and encourage them. We were all in their shoes once, I think. This is a great time to help someone get started. See if you can find a loaner among your fellow Ozzies. Let them start with a decent bike, rather than the lead sled from the local box store. And help them be safe. There are some simple rules of the road that we all need to use. Wear the helmet; a level helmet is a safe helmet. Check your wheels to make sure they turn easily, check your brakes to make sure you can stop, put a little lube on that chain so it will last longer. Keep it clean. I am sure you have more rules of your own. And put a smile on your face. So get all you can of bicycling in June, before it goes away. And if the chance comes up to share, give it a whirl. Task Force Talk: As the Wizard announced at the May meeting, there is a task force getting together to look at choices and chances for communication. We Monday, June 1, 2009 7 PM. Scholfield Honda’s Green Zone. 7017 E Kellogg, in the SE corner of Kellogg Drive. Program: A Short Discussion of the Oz Club Task Force Results…Plus A Swap Meet. Clean out the garage and bring those unwanted, left over bicycle parts, accessories, etc. to sell or trade with your fellow bikers. Join other Ozzies for dinner before the meeting on Monday, June 1st at 5:30 PM, at N&J Café 5600 E. Lincoln. will be considering all the means of getting the word out, and how to do it well. The task force is composed of Dennis Hardin, Melanie Cox, Cecile (after the WW 100), Steve McRae, Darras Delamaide, Don Kramer, Jay and Roxanne Wright and the Wizard. If you have ideas or things you want, sing out. All of these folks are good listeners, so let them know your thoughts. Delores Craig / Wizard 2009 INSIDE THIS ISSUE Amputees Across America Touring Report Racing Report AND MUCH MORE Editors’ Bike Corner With the onset of May’s “Bike To Work Week,” there was an interesting annual report in the “American Bicyclist” magazine. In that edition, the League of American Bicyclists gives the annual bike-friendly cities throughout the country, listing the best of cycling from sea to shining sea. The rankings list from the “Platinum” communities (excellent), “Gold” (super), “Silver” (good) to finally “Bronze” (honorable mention). The criterion for making the ranking is long, but meaningful for those communities fortunate enough to be mentioned. The number of communities of the platinum level is a total of three: Boulder, CO; Davis, CA; & Portland, OR. These are the best of the best nationwide for bicyclists. Each community has local government backing & the realization of how important the bicycle is to their city, to the point of implementing it into their overall budgets, transportation scheme & culture. Meanwhile, the gold rankings have been achieved by only nine communities & the silver ranking has been attained by a mere 20 localities. The 63 bronze cities are making progress, but still have a way to go to achieve the higher rankings. To no one’s surprise, Wichita is not listed on the list by the magazine. However, the communities of Lawrence & Shawnee were both listed this year in the Bronze category. In fact, Kansas is listed number 25 in the nation for overall 2008 State Rankings. Even with the WAMPO initiatives & the great work that our own Prairie Travelers has been doing over these past few years, Wichita continues to lag lightyears behind the rest of the country in being a bicycle-friendly community. It is a shame that even with the millions of dollars being given to our area for transportation by the federal government, only a minor bike route in the Andover area is the only funding towards upcoming bicycle routes & paths. It is only a drop in the bucket, & will not help the immediate need for the Wichita area for safer bicycle riding & commuting. I have experienced first-hand the frustration of many road bicyclists just riding down to the Oz st Family Ride on Saturday afternoons on 21 Street; one intersection instead of having a place to ride up & press the crossing button, cyclists must ride down an incline, press the cross button, back up & re-align their bike to cross the roadway. Otherwise, the Bike Route, although twisty, is acceptable. Wichita continues to be painstakingly slow in achieving any kind of bicycling excellence. I’ve been told that the Kansas Legislature in Topeka have several representatives that feel as though bicycles should not be sharing the roadway with vehicles. Fortunately, state representatives don’t have the votes to overturn that current state ordinance about Sharing The Road. There are some neat things that many of the aforementioned communities have done to make them more bicycle-friendly in the past year. The most significant accomplishment was in Boulder, CO, for its willingness to construct the 45acre Valmont Bicycle Park. It opened this past month. Meanwhile, Portland introduced large, green & highly visible bicycle boxes at intersections. They also removed on-street auto parking spaces at the request of adjacent business at many highly-visible locations in favor of on-street bicycle parking. These changes allowed for those communities an upgrade to Platinum status in 2009. Austin, TX has a policy to accommodate cyclists on all new road projects. In the past three years, the city has reduced motor vehicle lanes on roadways to install bicycle lanes. Illegal behaviors toward bicycles by motorists are now required by the local court system to take a mandatory League course as part of educating the public. Even in Missoula, MT the local school district has two trailers equipped for educating the youth by providing bikes, helmets & teaching aids. This bicycling program, for K-5, instructs children bike safety & skills during the spring & fall in each school as part of their physical education curriculum. Also, in San Francisco, the local YMCA leads bi-weekly guided rides in local neighborhoods through afterschool bike clubs at local middle schools. With the use of donated bikes, the YMCA also teaches nutritious eating habits, map-reading along with safe & complete street design concepts. There are other initiatives as well: Scottsdale, AZ employs three full-time planner positions dedicated to bicycling, pedestrian & trail issues; Beaverton., OR has a Safe Routes to School plan for every school; Bloomington, IN requires that new developments connect to the bicycle network; Brentwood, CA has been putting bicycling first in its engineering. The city cleans its shoulders & bike lanes once every seven days; Brunswick, ME currently employs 30 of its 37 police officers as officially-licensed bicycle police. As far as the only two bicycle-friendly cities in Kansas, Lawrence currently educates vehicular & bicyclists alike on the etiquette of sharing the road through real life demonstrations, teaching hand signals & distributing brochures. According to a 2000 census, 1.3 percent of the city regularly bicycles to work---three times the national average. In contrast, the city of Shawnee was the first in the area to adopt a bicycle transportation plan that incorporated onroad along with off-road bicycling facilities. It is disheartening to me personally to hear that Critical Mass came to the Wichita area last month during the River Festival. This only caused more of a problem with getting our point across concerning sharing the road with others. I have always felt that working with the so-called “opposition” of motor vehicles instead of inciting them with more ammunition to take away our legal rights by our insensitive actions in such a moronic demonstration will make it that much harder to win the respect with regards to our place on the roadway. As many of you know me, I’m not usually one to be preaching bicycling advocacy, but for once I guess I must be willing---as hopefully all of you---to put it out there & say that there is much, much more to be done in the Wichita area. Yes, I stop at stop signs; I am the one to urge those in the Oz Club to break down into a single-file line on many roadways; I am adamant about courtesy not only in the paceline, but on the roads as well. Hopefully, in the upcoming riding season, with the help of both the state & local municipalities, we in the bicycling community will not only be safer, but also find riding more rewarding as well. Keep on Trekkin, Jay & Roxanne Wright Editors-at-Large There are some people who would like to get the newsletter electronically, which would not only save on paper, but on postage, too. Delores wants to get the Club out in the public as possible, creating a task force to get some ideas for this. Dennis Hardin weighed in the topics from the Board’s perspective. They had a demo of the new web site, and how it will coordinate with the Newsletter. Delores told the group about patches for riding mileage, 1,000 - 2,000 - 3,000, etc. It would be on the honor system. They will have a mileage chart on the new web site to chart one’s self. They have not worked the details of what the patches will look like. This will be a challenge for you to set a goal, which is obtainable for you. The patches will be handed out to members at the Christmas party. Also, The Amputees Across America will be stopping here June 19. They are amazing people. Wicked Wind 100 and WAMPO (Wichita Area Metro Planning Organization) - They have an on-line survey you can take. The Oz Bike Club was mentioned as part of the map-making format for the study. Cecile thanked all of the volunteers who are going to help with this year’s Wicked Wind 100. Oz Newsletter -articles need to be in by the 15th, as usual. If you are going to put on a ride, try to let them know a week ahead of time of the publication deadline; if you wait until the last minute, they cannot guarantee that it will get in there before your ride. Touring - Frank Landers - he commented that every time he schedules a ride it gets rained out; hopefully within the next few weeks, this will change. Wanda gave a report on the Oz Tailwind Ride. 27 people rode this ride starting from Canton and ending in Goddard. When we started out it was a little chilly, but once we got started, we warmed up and the day went well. The lunch stop was run very well and the food was very good. The SAGs were appreciated. Other than when we had to go west (9.5 miles) into the wind, it was a very good ride. Racing report – No report was given. Oz Program-Ruth and Bob Holiday talked about bicycle maintenance. Bob began the program by telling a joke about going to heaven and riding. Then he got into upkeep on you bike. He asked a question, what bolt or screw on a bike comes loose? The answer was a cleat bolt. Safety is very important when riding you bike. Make sure you check it over before you ride. Next question: what is the most common reason for a flat tire? The answer is a pinched flat. When you are changing a flat, and you get down to that last bit of tire going into the rim, if ☺ Social Committee ☺ Roxanne and Jay, we want to thank you for the wonderful snacks you brought to the last meeting. They were really enjoyed. Cecile Kellenbarger will be bringing the snacks for the June meeting. See you all there. Mary Sciortino OZ Membership Meeting MAY 4, 2009 Delores opened the meeting at 7:00 pm. She asked if there were any guests at the meeting tonight. Kenneth Filtren and Mark Beeson, welcome to you both. She told them that they came on a good night, as there is a drawing for a prize if you meet certain criteria for winning. You had to have ridden 150 miles that week, had a crash; rode at least 50 miles in one day and there was several other things. The last one was to have complained about the weather, of which all of us have done. The winner was Randy Jason. He won a can of "HALT" dog repellant. The Wizard also talked about doing a ride called cycle ZYDECO. This is a 5-day bike ride in southern Louisiana. At the SAG stops the beverage of choice was beer. It sounded like she had a good time. you can help it, do not use the tire levers. The reason is that you can get the tube stuck between the tire and the rim---and voila--- when you inflate it you will pinch the tube .Also; always make sure that you check your rim tape because you can also get a flat as well. What is the second bolt on a bike that could come lose? The seat post bolt. Especially the single seat post bolt system. When you are riding down the road, bouncing up and down, the seat post has to take all of the shock of you on the bike. What bolt or screw need greased after you clean you bike with solvent? All of them. What is it about riding in the rain, which causes more flats? When it rains, water becomes a very good lube for the gravel on the road. After a little while, tires get cracks in them, and then the gravel, which has become lubricated by the rain get into these cracks, it will puncture the tube. What causes a bike to make clicking noises after a rain when riding? When the spokes are crossed they wear together. On a dry day, you will get lube from the tires, the chain, etc. When it rains, this lube gets washed out. Hence when you ride the next day, there is a clicking noise. Why is it when you change your chain, that you have problems shifting? You need to change the gear cassette also. When you ride a lot, the chain stretches and wears the gears. So when you replace the chain, and you don't change the gears, you will slip on the gear cassette. He had several other things that you could get for your bicycle--lubes, tools, along with gadgets to clean your chain. If you need more info, go see either Bob or Ruth at The Bicycle Pedaler. Meeting adjourned at 8:30pm. Respectfully Submitted, Alan Chapman one of the little hills and got a big gap on his own and kept pacing it. As he was bringing back the break he either hit his handle bar or got caught in a cross wind gust that knocked his front wheel out from under him and ended up on the pavement. He tried to get back up but found his collarbone was making some crunching sounds. Bob ended up breaking his collar bone and needing surgery--- he was asking for his trainer even before he got to the doctor's office! He made it through surgery and is doing great, everyone give Bob some good vibes for a fast recovery. As for the Cat 4 race, Adam took 2nd, Ryan 5th, with Kent rounding out the top ten at 8th and Richard took 11th in the TT. Great start for Specs 4’s! The crit was an exciting race, with 58 riders on the line, everyone thinking they are going to win. On the prime laps they worked together to get Ryan and Adam good lead outs for points...and again it worked. Another exciting race to watch! For the finish, Ryan 1st, Adam 3rd, and Earl keeping us in 1st for the Team GC at 19th. The Sunday morning RR started off and a guy from GP Velotek took off immediately. Nobody got excited and he was back within the pack after a couple of miles. There were a few break attempts, but nothing got out of hand on the first lap. Going across the dam, there was a breakaway with other teams blocking to keep Adam and Ryan from doing anything about it. Adam shot through them and pulled up to break, by himself, and put Ryan first in the prime. They were able to keep things under control during the second lap with Ryan and Adam in 1st and 2nd at the finish. The Cat 4 did an amazing job and came out with 1st in the Team GC! All in all the Kansas cycling community knows who Specs racing is after this stage race. The Specs Team had a great showing and looked really good in their participation with all the competition. After the Time Trials the category 3 worked to get Jay all the sprint prime points they could and it worked. Jay got 1st in all of the prime laps and Bob being the last lead out ended up picking up points too, as it was a great crit race to watch! The team GC going into the Road Race (RR) looked good for the Cat 3. After the first lap of the RR Bob took off on Ads can be left on the answering machine, 316-7960576 (state exactly how you want the ad to read), or e-mailed to ozbikeclub@yahoo.com. The first week we had a very nice couple with their children joining in on the ride. Don Kramer explained some basic hand signals to use when riding with a group and then off they went with Jay Wright leading the group and Don acting as sweep. The second week the weather wasn’t the best but four of us went twice around the park and it was enjoyable. We feel that rides like this could prove to be very attractive to our members that do have children. It is a fun way to bond with your kids plus the added inducement of ICE CREAM afterwards should be very tempting to them. So come on out! We start at 5 o’clock every Saturday afternoon. The loop is around 4 to 5 miles nice and flat on a well-maintained bike path. If any of you have neighbors that you feel might find this type of family ride a fun thing to do please invite them along. One item that needs to be mentioned: at present st there is construction work being done on 21 Street and that entrance to the park is sometimes closed. th You can always enter from 13 Street and just drive st over to the parking area by 21 Street. We hope to see you on Saturdays. If you have any questions about this ride don’t hesitate to contact Don Kramer @ (316) 722-1705, Ben Sciortino @ (316) 733-5192. LET’S RIDE!! Oz Touring APRIL TOURING REPORT TAIL WIND RIDE On Sunday, April 9 twenty-seven enthusiastic Oz Bicycle riders boarded a school bus which took them north to Canton. Arriving in Canton they unloaded their bicycles from the Oz trailer and three trucks. They made a quick stop at Casey’s General Store and then it was go for a 60-mile ride. It was cold and overcast with a north wind blowing at 25 miles per hour, but the brave group began their trip back to Goddard High School. The first SAG stop was at the park in Hesston. A five mile ride west on Dutch road gave them a workout with a cross wind from the northwest. At Halstead Road they turned south and began their ride to the lunch stop at the Halstead City Park. The riders lunched on fried chicken, slaw, baked beans and home made cookies. Now it was on south to the next SAG stop in Colwich where they rested a little before making the final south and west ride back to Goddard High School. All the riders were back safely by 3:30 pm. Oz members assisting with the ride were Frank Lander who pulled the Oz Bicycle trailer and furnished his truck. Don Kramer and Herb Bahm manned the SAG in Hesston. Don Jackson drove a truck furnished by Delores Craig and also manned the Colwich SAG. Dale Culbertson furnished his truck which was driven by Tour Director Wanda Groves. Ruth Holliday and Barbara Harris served the lunch at the Halstead City Park. The lunch stop ladies had prepared some vegetarian sandwiches for those riders who did not eat the chicken. My personal “THANKS” to all the Oz members who helped with this ride and to the riders who always had a smile on their face as they rode down the road. Touring Chair, Wanda Groves. th, A Special Ride With Special Guests Four amputees are riding their bikes across America and they are coming to Wichita! They are scheduled to be in town on Friday, June 19. The OZ Bike Club has been invited to have breakfast with them at Braum's at 21st & Ridge Rd at 9:30 am and then ride with them to Wesley Rehabilitation Center at 13th & Tyler with a police escort and maybe some press coverage. They will visit outside the Rehab Center with people who will meet them there and then we can stay and have a provided lunch around 10:45 am with them as well. They plan to visit with outpatients at the center and then go upstairs and visit with inpatients to show that they can still do anything they set their minds to. We can eat, ride and even stay for the visits with the patients to help promote cycling to them. Bring your cameras. May – June Touring Report The four rides I have scheduled for this month are favorites of mine. Six Crossings is one that was a very hot one a year or so ago, some of us took a swim at crossing # 5. The Udall Ride is both new and old. Come try it and see. The Latham Ride is one we used to call Clay Center Junction Ride. It is very scenic and fun. We have not done the Cassoday to Strong City Ride for several years so let’s do it again. All the rides will be SAGged, so no excuses. BE THERE!!! There were a pair of men's Salomon athletic shoes left in the back of my truck after the Tailwind ride. Call me at (316) 777-1908 and we will get them to you.
