                              TEEN DRIVER CHALLENGE COURSE

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Juvenile Department, is conducting a free Teen Drivers
Challenge course for all teenage drivers with a learners permit or drivers license. The course,
designed by the Florida Sheriff’s Association, will provide four hours of classroom training by
certified Driving Instructors and eight hours of hands on experience designed to increase
driver awareness and crash avoidance. The students will operate their own vehicle through
the same course Law Enforcement Officers train on each year which teaches students backing
techniques and how to react in an emergency situation such as over correcting – how to
recover safely.

The age requirement for student participation is between the ages of 15 to 19 years old.
Students must have either a learner permit or a driver license. There is no charge for the

The Friday evening class is held at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, 692 NW 30th Avenue,
Ocala, Florida 34475, from 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. The driving course held on Saturday will
take place in the parking lot of the American Commerce Center, 6045 SE 83rd Street, Ocala,
Florida 34472 (old Certified Grocers location on CR 35/Baseline Road) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m. Directions to both locations are attached.

Students will meet in the lobby of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Operations Center on
Friday and then will be escorted to the Sheriff’s Conference Room for the classroom portion
of the course. They will not be leaving the building until 10:00 p.m. when the class is over.
Drink & snack machines are available for use or they can bring their own. They will not need a
vehicle for Friday’s class. You will need to supply them with a vehicle to drive on Saturday. If
they have a learner’s permit, they will have a law enforcement officer in the vehicle with
them at all times while driving. On Saturday, they will need to bring their lunch or if they
have a driver’s license, they may leave to get lunch.

The student will need to bring all forms completed and notarized with them to class on Friday
evening as well as a copy of permit or license, vehicle registration, and vehicle insurance.

All students who complete the course will receive a certificate. Students who have completed
the course found it very helpful and have recommended it to their friends.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office believes that proper etiquette, social customs, and good
grooming are a definite part of the educational process. To this end, it is expected that
students wear to the Teen Driver Challenge neat, clean, appropriate clothing that meets the
standards of any educational environment. It is not the intention of these guidelines to usurp
the authority of parents for determining what is appropriate dress and grooming for their
children. In view of this statement, the following rules will be in effect during your
attendance to the Teen Driver Challenge:

• Students are expected to wear clothing and clothing accessories in keeping with their
gender. Undergarments should not be visible at any time.

• Students are not to wear T-shirts or other garments with pictures, logos, phrases, decals,
patches, emblems, or words printed on them that are obscene or disruptive in the judgment
of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. This will include, but not be limited to: nude/semi-
nude figures; figures in sexually suggestive postures; or logos of alcoholic beverages, tobacco
products, or prohibited substances; or satanic/occult references or gang identification.

• Tops must be long enough to clearly overlap the belt line or stay tucked in during the
course of normal movement throughout the day. No bare-midriff shirts/blouses or sleep wear
will be worn.

• Garments will be secured at the waist. Shorts and skirts are permitted but must be mid-
thigh length or longer.

 • Students shall wear closed toe shoes. No sandals or flip flops. Bedroom slippers are
not permitted.

Appropriateness and moderation in all things, concern for the health and safety of the
students, and the avoidance of distractions to the educational process are the guiding
principles of these regulations.
