Newsletter Adelaide – Whyalla – Roxby Downs – Broken Hill Three Committee representatives, including a student representative attended this year’s AusIMM Congress held in Mt Isa, Queensland in late May. We were able to give an update on the Adelaide Branch activities which included the technical and social program, technical conferences and lectures, the initiatives regarding student support such as scholarships and funding for conferences as well as the co-operative technical program with other Adelaide industry and professional organisations. The Congress was well attended and addressed some key organisational and strategic issues. The success of our lunchtime meetings was also presented as a case study to Congress. The half day update seminar on the JORC Code planned for early May was postponed to a yet to be determined later date. We will advise as soon as details are available. I am presently attending the 2009 AusIMM Uranium Conference in Darwin. The organising committee has determined that the 2010 conference will be held in Adelaide in the month of June. This event will be a welcome addition to the active conference program supported by the Adelaide Branch, which includes the upcoming Tenth Mill Operators’ Conference 2009 to be held in October 2009, in Adelaide. Finally, if you have any comments or suggestions about the activities of the Adelaide Branch, I would urge you to pass them on to myself or other committee members. David Brunt - Branch Chair 2 (which eliminates the need for crushing in Whyalla), a new export facility at Whyalla for hematite ore export and dust control and the construction of transhipping facilities to provide for off-shore loading of Cape sized vessels; including two transfer vessels and a floating offshore terminal vessel. There have been environmental benefits in terms of dust reduction and scrapping of old plant infrastructure. The life of the steelworks has been extended from approximately 2015 to at least 2027 On behalf of the AusIMM Adelaide Branch I wish to extend another thanks to Mike for his presentation. July Technical Meeting The next in our popular lunchtime series will be Gerard Anderson, Managing Director of Centrex Metals on Thursday 16th July at the Historian. Gerard will speak about his company’s activities in the Eyre Peninsula and the Wilgerup project in particular with a talk titled “Good Guys Eventually Win”. Please contact Kim Sabine, Australian Zircon 08 8410 8884, ksabine@auzircon.com.au to secure your booking as early as possible and select your meal. See attached flier. It would be of great assistance to the staff at the Historian if attendees could double check that the correct meal selection has been noted down for them when they pay at the door upon arrival. Thanks for your cooperation in this regard. Essington Lewis Lecture I am delighted to confirm that Professor Ian Plimer has been confirmed as our illustrious speaker for this year’s 35th Annual Essington-Lewis lecture. This year it will be held at the University of Adelaide Campus on Thursday 19th November. See attached flier for more details and remember to register early. Annual Dinner The speaker for our very popular mid-year Annual Dinner on the 31st July at the Adelaide Pavilion has been confirmed and we are taking bookings for this event now. Dr Martin Deveney will entertain us with stories about his adventures in biosecurity and sustainability which took place during his time travelling as a marine biologist with SARDI. See the attached flyer for more details and be sure to get in early with your bookings for this one. Forthcoming Events Upcoming speakers include Greg Hall from Toro energy and Mick Wilkes from OZ Minerals at our lunchtime functions later in the year. There will also be a Joint function with The GSA (Geological Society) on the 23rd July – more details to follow on this one. Technical and Social Report May Technical Meeting On Thursday 14th May the Branch hosted yet another very successful sell-out lunchtime Technical Meeting at the Historian Hotel. Mike Bannear from Onesteel spoke about various operational aspects of Project Magnet and it’s impact on the Whyalla Steelworks . Mike joined OneSteel in 2003 as Technical Manager in the Ore Products Area (Pellet Plant and fixed plant SMR). He was closely involved throughout the design and implementation of Project Magnet and was Process Commissioning Manager of both the new concentrator and redesigned Pellet Plant. He currently works in the Business Sustainability group as Manager Technology Development. Mike gave us an overview of Project Magnet as a value-creating, long term project, that builds on OneSteel’s competitive advantage of owning both hematite and magnetite resources. Important successes of the project have been economic, social and environmental performance. Key project components have been a new 3 stage crushing system, the new magnetite concentrator The AusIMM S.A. Newsletter Adelaide – Whyalla – Roxby Downs – Broken Hill In related programs, I would like to also draw your attention to the AusIMM Mill Operator’s Conference, which is to be held from the 12th to 14th October at the Hilton Hotel in Adelaide. Pre and post-conference tours to Prominent Hill and Olympic Dam will be taking place. A very exciting program of speakers is being finalised and Key Note addresses by Dr Paul Heithersay, Dr Robin Batterham and Peter Munro have been confirmed. Go to the AusIMM website for more details. In 2010 when the mining engineering course reaches fourth year, those students will also be eligible to apply. This Newsletter carries a report from Mandy Absalom, Chair of the Mawson Student Chapter, about the New Leaders Conference and the Student Games. The Branch subsidised attendance of the 26 Adelaide students who participated. Two students, Mandy Absalom (Chair of the Mawson Student Chapter) and Alex Buchanan (Vice Chair of the Chapter) have been awarded Education Endowment Fund scholarships. The Branch has awarded an Adelaide Branch AusIMM – Playford Trust scholarship to David Haddow, who is studying in the Honours year in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Adelaide University. A formal presentation took place at Old Parliament House on May 12, and we will present scholarship certificates at a Branch function later in the year. The conference theme ‘Mining our generation – The future of the mining industry’ included various speeches and presentations. There were three presentations on each topic, which on day one included Efficiency Improvement and Optimisation with a great talk on QA/QC practices, Career Pathways and Opportunities and Strategic Issues in Mining, which covered project finance and the future possibilities of remotely operated mines. The second day incorporated Innovation in Practices, Processes and Alternatives with discussions on bio-diesel fuel and crushing options, with the last and well-known topic; The Great David Brunt presents the scholarship cheque to David Haddow at the Playford Trust presentations on 12 May The AusIMM S.A. Newsletter Adelaide – Whyalla – Roxby Downs – Broken Hill Climate Change Dispute with an associated, structured debate to end the afternoon. The Mining Games followed the conference on the weekend with Adelaide University strongly represented with 26 mining engineer and geology students. A total of 31 national teams entered with two men’s and two mixed division teams from Adelaide. Each team rotated through the eight events, which included Rock ID, Specific Gravity, Air Leg Drilling, Mucking, Gold Panning, Rail Set, Swede Saw and Face Tie-In, over the two days. (Needless to say we had to ask for the objective and rules of some events). All the Adelaide teams performed admirably and hopefully this will be the beginning of a tradition as many of us plan to compete again in the 2010 International Mining Games to be held in Kalgoorlie. The week was an excellent experience. The opportunity to learn about new technology, insights and aspects of the mining industry at the conference was invaluable. The mining games encouraged teamwork and collaboration in completing events. The organised social occasions to meet industry professionals, recent graduates and build friendships were fantastic. On behalf of all the Adelaide AusIMM students, a huge thankyou has to be extended towards the Adelaide AusIMM Branch, who supported our interest through registration fees for the whole event; without their assistance our attendance would not have been possible. Thank you again.
