The Osmotherley Area Parish Plan 06 – Fact Book
Appendix 02 – Questionnaire responses
Adult residents - Question comments section 2
Introduction
This appendix lists the written comments made in answer to the questions in the
questionnaire. The comments are collected against each question.
SECTION 2 – AMENITIES AND SERVICES
2.1B Burial Grounds any other comments
Put sheep back in Churchyard. Who benefits from grass cutting at St Peter‟s at present?
(010)
Do burial records confirm no burials have taken place at St Peter‟s for a century? (017)
Other land should be identified for an economical Burial ground, green or otherwise (33)
My ancestors are buried in St Peters. The village “new comers” will not have the same
“feelings” as we “older” villagers have – RESPECT (44)
Chiropodist (51)
Moved gravestones will be lost. Has someone got a hidden agenda? (54)
I would like to be able to be buried at a site other than a cemetery (58)
Shrubs as opposed to trees (63)
Bring back the sheep to keep the grass neat. Provision of a small area for pet memorials
(69)
I would like more information on all the possibilities i have ticked (77)
Freeze drying Swedish process (suggestion for green burial) (85)
St Peters churchyard was closed for disease reasons and probably would be difficult to
re-open. Cemetery is responsibility of Hambleton District Council not village (87)
A cemetery is surely the responsibility of the local authority, not the parish (88)
It should be remembered that St Peters graveyard is consecrated ground (90)
Grass cutters should take more care when cutting, grave stones are left covered in grass
and graves should be left much tidier after a burial (93)
Green „burials‟ are the preferred option. Have you heard of vertical burials, it takes up
very little room (95)
Expect to be cremated – we can‟t keep developing cemeteries - no objection to other
religious beliefs but we should move on (96)
None (101)
The footpaths in the Cemetery grounds are in need of resurfacing also more care is
required by the Contractors when the grass is cut – the Cemetery often looks neglected
(104)
I think old graves should be recycled for as long as possible (113)
I have no objection to the re-use of graves in the current cemetery (114)
Once the Cemetery reaches full capacity a new site should be located and the St Peters
Churchyard left as it is (126)
We should be able to use the field opposite for a graveyard (135)
Grave stones should be put to the side of grounds at St Peters Church and a car park put
there. New cemetery should be opposite the existing one, the Church owns the field so
we should be given it! Enough room for car par too (137)
I do not support the use of land for disposal of the dead. Those opting for burial must pay
the costs (149)
The existing Churchyard: I feel this is a matter for the Parish Church and its community
(either possibility sounds acceptable as an observation) (153)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 1 of 35
Some graves were flooded last year; this caused distress. Drainage on right hand side
(as you enter) cold be improved (168)
Management of the Church Yard and Cemetery environment has been insensitive to
wildlife (171)
We have a ruined Church and Graveyard in France which needs a lot a work but it is
important to ensure old stones are looked after to be viewed as History and not just put
against a wall out of the way. Keep History (174)
At a cost to the HDC (177)
Extension to present Cemetery (South) (182)
Green sounds „nice‟ but upkeep would be on-going by someone! As personalisation
would be missing and private care would diminish (183)
“Green” burials with trees/plants will require regular maintenance (188)
Nuff stones as it is. Just enough to keep the yard pretty, pretty, for the tourists (202)
The question has already been asked a number of years ago and answered! (216)
Cremation (220)
St Peter‟s Churchyard has potential to become lovely meeting area/park in centre of
Village, for use by all (222)
The difficulty of “green” burials is the space required if each burial is to be individually
marked. Cremation should be encouraged as this requires less space. There would be
opportunity to create a dignified and beautiful memorial garden – free of individual
markers – but with a memorial book to record individuals. Additionally, created remains
could be interred in the existing churchyard/cemetery? (227)
The Council were informed by R/C and C/E clergy re shortage, many years ago! “Green”
burials in cemetery and church yard. The Garden Club, 2 year ago had a speaker who
transformed a cemetery into a beautiful place. Written up nationally. Lives South of York
(228)
We have reserved our joint place in the present cemetery (and paid for it!) (229)
Already booked in the cemetery but thoughtful about B(2) (230)
Prefer Option “A” (236)
Reference 2-1A. Although preference expressed this may prove impossible as it is a
“closed” graveyard (247)
More people should be encouraged to be cremated (257)
Keep it mowed and tidy (272)
Would like some notice to be put outside Cemetery to warn cars of people coming in and
going across the road (275)
Marking not necessary grassed over would do (304)
2.2 Schools
What ways do you think the school could enhance its services or facilities and/or
enrich its links with the community?
After School Clubs (001)
No comment (002)
Sporting games arranged against Northallerton schools (005)
Closer links with other schools (010)
After school care/possible adult night school facilities (014)
Produce a news sheet (possibly quarterly) to inform Villagers as well as parents of their
achievements and aspirations and mentioning areas where they may need support (015)
Use of school buildings for wider community learning initiatives (016)
Use School building for other activities out of school hours (018)
Sorry, out of touch (025)
Having sports, football, cricket, netball teams etc (27)
We should support our local school (29)
I think we should be proud of our local school and am very disappointed that people
choosing to live in the village take their children to other schools. The school should be
given full support by all villagers (30)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 2 of 35
1) By having a new school; bigger with playing field and a car park. Then the old school
could be used for a much bigger village hall. 2) Using the existing one to run youth clubs
in evenings and evening classes for adults and teenagers in any subject (33)
Improve sporting / physical activity facilities, perhaps through development of
“Community” facilities remote from the school (38)
More publicity for non-parents (42)
More trips out / bringing other pupils into our village (43)
Be supported by the community i.e. less children be taken away from the village to other
schools. (49)
After school activities (52)
Happy with progress (56)
Keep an open doors policy to keep parents informed about what is happening etc (58)
Being used for a community resource - e.g. for computer classes or for meetings etc (59)
After school club and social activities (64)
More after school clubs (67)
Litter collecting to make children aware that litter doesn‟t just disappear by magic.
Helping with the "Old folks" annual party in the village. Provide "This is Osmotherly
School" table showing its events on Summer games day (69)
Increase catchment so school population bigger. Open some events to village (73)
More parent involvement (74)
No opinion (78)
Anything that enhances status as local first class school (81)
Have a dining / PE hall built and / or a new school (85)
Use sports grounds at Thimbleby - ensuring safer access / footpaths from school
grounds, continuing education classes (86)
Many older members of the community would be pleased to be involved with the school
activities (90)
The comment in this return has been removed by the Steering Group as it was deemed
offensive to specific individuals. In summary it was very critical of the school. (95)
The school needs to contact parents and future parents and find out why children/parents
are using other schools. Maybe integrate with another larger school – share town/village
opportunities. We can offer town schools some benefits and we can gain from other
schools. A detailed survey is required to find the schools strength/weakness ad its future.
School and its children are the future of the village – must stay open (96)
Designated room open during the day for use as a meeting place for elderly. Access to
internet now broadband in Village for folk without access to a computer. Open in
evenings to run night classes/games – badminton, computing etc (102)
Possible use of sports field/cricket field in Thimbleby (105)
Continue with the plan mentioned above (107)
No thoughts, doing well with recycling bins (113)
Community courses (114)
Provision of after school activities (with parents contributing to costs). Use of school
premises for adult education classes (117)
Invite them in more often (121)
Schools are used in other areas so possibilities should be explored (122)
More variety in after school clubs (126)
If the school does enhance its services it wouldn‟t last long because most people don‟t
like volunteering (135)
Things have been in school in the past. Then they finish, because of lack of interest
(137)
Wider community learning initiatives in the evenings (148)
Not a comment (149)
Sounds as though it‟s doing OK as it is within the scope of the site/available facilities.
The only other possibility, if it were a suitable site – an outreach (or stand alone) site for
Adult Further Education/Evening Classes (e.g. Languages – IT – Arts/Crafts) (153)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 3 of 35
Enhancing usually incurs hidden costs resulting in large debts and then closure – beware
look at the results in many Villages throughout England. No Schools because over
extended remit to teach (162)
Computer Club for “silver surfers” (170)
Possibly providing evening classes in a range of vocational and non-vocational subjects
(172)
Make use more of Thimbleby Cricket Pavilion and land (174)
Continue present exploration on behalf of all school age young people (175)
No opinion (180)
Journey to Northallerton to facilities at leisure centre by bus (181)
Arranged mini bus trips to Northallerton Leisure Centre for two age groups weekly or
fortnightly (with two Supervisors) (182)
Involving children with community activities and initiating some (183)
Invite local people in to help with reading (185)
Invite local people in to School to talk to the children, answer their questions, help with art
work etc (186)
Use the School for night classes (187)
Make teacher access/promote football, rugby, athletics etc better, encourage your plans
above to this end (191)
Provision of adult learning opportunities (196)
Use the Cricket Field for sports. Allow playground to be used outside school hours (197)
No opinion (200)
Access to re-cycling bins is needed at week-ends (204)
By using St Peter‟s every week, which will enrich and add another dimension to their
education (206)
Use buildings and playground for community evenings and weekends (208)
Use a play8ing field, e.g. The Cricket Pitch for more sport. Or flatten part of the garden
(209)
Evening Classes – such as I.T. (210)
The School is required to give rural children a chance to become rural adults and have
rural views, as opposed to the brainwashing of people as regards to rural values (216)
More visitors from within the community for assemblies etc, e.g. to talk about farming (at
lambing time etc), the moors; village history etc (e.g. WWII at “Poppy” time etc) (217)
Run Life-long learning courses (219)
By better communicating events open to the public (222)
Carry on the good work already being done with the children (224)
Could Osmotherley “share” facilities with Ingleby School i.e. shared sports days,
interschool football using Ingleby‟s sports facilities. What about twinning the School, or
the Village, to encourage learning of another language and culture (226)
With children yet to start school it is difficult to comment (227)
Indoor bowling centre. Computer classes for adults (228)
Computer classes in the evenings! (229)
No opinion (231)
Greater use of sports facilities at Thimbleby (233)
More use of Thimbleby Cricket field (234)
Parents need to be more willing to participate in school (help out/attend school fund
raisers) (235)
Internet facilities for public use. More Village Hall Dances/Balls, as in past (236)
By having a Head Teacher that did not change every six months (237)
Use the Village Hall where possible (239)
By allowing the Head Teacher to exercise discipline within the School with no
interference from parents (247)
Schools should be able to share other schools facilities (248)
Concentrate on obtaining the best for the 5-11 year olds (251)
School contributions to Village events (fair etc) and festivals (Harvest, Christmas) (252)
A car park with Village Hall, Changing Rooms, Sports/Civic Hall, Kitchen, Tennis Courts,
Bowling Green, Children Sports Field Area (253)
Purchase specific transport (254)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 4 of 35
A Play Area, Tennis and 5-a-side Football near to Village Centre (256)
Use for night classes i.e. computers etc (257)
More adult classes (259)
By not throwing litter (271)
After School activities/courses for community (273)
Get a playing field (278)
Use a playing field (279)
Needs to organise more social events to get the whole Village to mix and communicate
again, will also provide more funds for the School (280)
Promote after school provision (283)
Extend recycling facilities (285)
Older pupils might consider joining the Table Tennis Club Wednesday 8 pm (290)
1. A better site with an attached playing field. 2. A more consistent Head Teacher! (291)
More night school. ?Brownies/Guides etc (298)
More night classes or courses during school holidays (299)
Evening classes. Extended school facilities (300)
Adult education evening classes (302)
Acquiring a playing field for sports would be a great asset (303
2.3 Churches
A. Do you find it easy to get information about church meetings, services and other
events?
Not religious (005)
B. If you would like other forms of church information, would you prefer:
A combined newsletter – Yes. A Website is not available to all (009)
St Peter‟s is a large space. With movable pews, it could be used for all sorts of social
activities e.g. wedding service and Reception could be held there (catered by the Queen
Catherine). It would be wonderful for Badminton which is not possible in the Village Hall.
The buildings cost a lot to maintain and need to be used for activities other than services
(this might then attract more parishioners) (009)
Home visits – especially to the elderly and sick (016)
By the Vicar arranging to visit sick. Residents who are known to live alone (017)
2.3B – We have a news and views newsletter with all the church information in out every
month
Get more involved in the running of our village and 100% of profits go to village founds
(43)
How often do we see other “churches” holding the Sunday tea-shop - ?? No? Because
the church of England has the monopoly (44)
Crèche? Granny service as babysitters (69)
Not a churchgoer (84)
Parish magazine, D & S (87)
In all sorts of ways. Its more a question of what input people are prepared to make to the
churches (90)
We are atheists so are not interested in the church. Stop organising Pilgrimages which
block the village with unwanted traffic (95)
Churches should assist the old and needy. Not sure how much of this is done by each
church – maybe include what each church actually achieves in a newsletter as well as its
worship activities (96)
More links with the residents that are unable to attend church i.e. the elderly and sick,
and involvement with the children (99)
They do their best but there is a lack of support – try to attract they younger generation
(107)
After school clubs have been tried by Churches but numbers were very poor (128)
No opinion (149)
(A combined newsletter?) – Monthly/Quarterly would be adequate (153)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 5 of 35
Involvement in the Community as a whole – they do; enabling their resources to be used
by the Community where possible – they do already (153)
As a venue for concerts, exhibitions, talks but only if appropriate to the setting (166)
No opinion (180)
Encouraging children and young adults to take part in more modern methods of music
and worship (181)
Organised ecumenical local walks (182)
A combined newsletter and website (182)
By providing a focal point at the times of yea when there are festivals e.g. Harvest,
Christmas (185)
Being welcoming. Ministers might wish to participate in community activities (186)
Not a church goer (191)
By appointing dynamic and charismatic priests.
Helping to give a level headed view on things in general (216)
They bring many visitors into the Village (Historic Sites, Special Services) (218)
Provide land for Visitors Car Park (220)
Become more open, more spiritual, less “formalised religion” (222)
A Sunday school would be nice, A Village Service at the Lady Chapel in summer. We
enjoy visiting Mount Grace Priory – could a Village event be held at the Priory – maybe a
Church Service and picnic? (226)
St. Peter‟s is excellent with its events, book sales, and teas. However, more events are
always welcome. Mass at the Lady Chapel is fantastic (227)
Hard to say, when they all do so much. I have never lived anywhere else where the
churches do so much and are at the centre of the community (227)
Handouts in each church giving the history of the respective churches for visitors (228)
They seem to be doing their best (in this age of cynicism) (229)
Careful, tactful, forceful intrusion in every aspect of Village life (230)
Not a lot (231)
By visiting old and lonely people in the Village occasionally (234)
Help out more at summer games (235)
More help towards summer games. Release field adjacent Oswaldene for car park and
playing field (236)
More to the point: what other ways can the community help church people contribute?
(239)
By providing an ecumenical approach (246)
A true ecumenical venture to be undertaken but sadly “Rome” will not allow this (247)
Help organise events for Children (256)
Used for singing classes and learning to play organ. Piano and other instruments (257)
Joint festival workshop. More us of St. Peters for Community Concerts etc (273)
Convert the Churchyard to a play area (282)
Regular news letters (298)
Joint Brownies/Guides/Cubs (299)
By being more “open” and by moving away from strict structures set by the services (303)
Sunday School, yes on Sunday – no more weekday worship and current contribution
adequate (304)
2.4 Communication
what do you think would be the best way to publicise events, community news, and
social activities in the village?
Know some but suspect not all, Notice Board (001)
The Newsletters we receive are very informative but they assume prior knowledge –
there are lots of new people in the Village so perhaps worth publishing existing
groups/activities (002)
A Village Newsletter (003)
Village Notice Board, flyers delivered to houses (005)
Newsletter/Website (008)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 6 of 35
1. Include details in the current Parish Magazine and deliver it free to all houses (funded
by Parish Council? or annual fundraising event). 2. Bring the Village Notice Board, a
new one, across the road, outside the Walking Shop say were more Village people will
see it (009)
Village Hall Notice Board (010)
Church magazine (013)
Newsletter (014)
Some Villages have a handout for newcomers listing services provided, organisations
etc. Perhaps this could be available combined with the above, which would mean it
would be up-dated at regular intervals (015)
Village newsletter (016)
Newsletters (018)
Village News Sheet (020)
Village Website (021)
Newsletter, D&S villages section (022)
Notice boards/shop windows usually adequate (025)
I think villagers should be responsible for their-selves and look and enquire about this
information (30)
Parish magazine, Newsletters to encourage villagers (33)
Village Newsletter? (37)
1) Obtain sites for display of coordinated community news – inc; Pub, Thompson‟s
window, Post office window, bus stop notice board, village hall and school 2) Identify a
host organisation / hub for production of community news (Ensure promotion of this
organisation so that “Promoters” are aware) 3) Publicise at set regularity (38)
Website (40)
Village website / notice boards in village (41)
Newsletter (43)
I always feel like its rather like a special little club for the newcomers – who tend to have
a idealistic view of village life – the rest of us live in the real world (44)
Newsletters (52)
Posters (54)
Notice board (55)
Monthly village newsletter (56)
We need one, say quarterly, newsletter that details all church / school / club activities,
and possibly a community website (59)
Newsletter, website (67)
Newsletter, Posters, Village 'File' in top shop / pubs (73)
Simple monthly / two monthly newsletter (75)

session in the village hall for all clubs and socs to be present and available for questions
(78)
Combined monthly newsletter within local community, church and school news (81)
Village newsletter, perhaps quarterly (82)
Village website (83)
Notice board, Newsletter (84)
Newsletter (85)
Combined society / clubs newsletter with contact details and organisers (86)
Community newsletter (87)
A 'welcome pack' would be useful to new residents of the village (90)
Leafleting individual homes? (95)
Parish newsletters & D & S village news(99)
A “central” notice board backed up by website. As a newcomer to Village I feel I have to
“search” for information (102)
Leaflets through doors – but tedious for those doing it. D&S Titles. News and Views
(105)
Letter box drops other than Village Centre (106)
Village Web site (109)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 7 of 35
Notice board as now (113)
Village Web site (114)
Probably a flyer or newsletter (115)
Improve the Village notice board near the bus stop. Notices that are well presented and
stand out clearly. A Village newsletter would be even better (116)
Parish Magazine (117)
Notice Boards (118)
Village Newsletter. Better use of Notice Boards (119)
Decent village notice board and designated space in Top Shop for activities (121)
Could use “Village” website or use notice boards before classes are filled by “regulars” so
same people do not attend each session (122)
More advertisement on notice boards and in papers, posters in pubs (126)
Village notice board (128)
The Village notice board (135)
The Village notice board should be enough. Anybody interested would read it (137)

A Village Newsletter – possible in tandem with the Parish Newsletter (198)
Effective use of Village Notice Boards (199)
A Village Newsletter giving information on activities. This could be done by a Village Hall

Village (200)
Notice Board (206)
Community Newsletter (208)
Put them in the window at Top Shop or on the Notice Board (209)
Have a communal calendar displayed in Top Shop/or Notice Board. Have one central

Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 8 of 35
A good Village Notice Board in central position, used by all, with forward Calendar of all
events and an “urgent notices” section where e.g. funerals can by advertised. People die
and I just do not hear until later (222)
Leaflet drops (223)
The notice board is good, maybe the odd newsletter (226)
Include them in a newsletter, perhaps combined with the churches. A newsletter should
be s inclusive and overarching as possible, covering all aspects of Village life (227)
Quarterly news sheet to homes (228)
More notice board information please (229)
Circulars – then they can be rubbished, but something will be read and some respect for

Would you use other sports facilities (such as a tennis court, bowling green, etc)? If
yes, please give suggestions:
Tennis Court would be good (001)
Other neighbouring Villages have Tennis Courts but it‟s a way to go. I think it would be
an excellent additional to local facilities (002)
Tennis Court (003)
Flat level playing field in the Village (005)
Tennis Court (010)
Swimming pool for combined Villages (016)
Improved bridle ways and increased access to moor land for horse riding (021)

Tennis court needed (86)
A tennis court sounds like a good idea (89)
Whereas i would never use them, I would support those who would (91)
Tennis court, Bowling green, Football field within the village four young boys. Better
disabled facilities in the play area e.g. Full support swing seat (95)
Tennis court would be used – a place for bikes – the moors is a vast area – banning
motorcycles is ridiculous – most motorcyclists are courteous people and respect walkers.
They do very little damage contrary to certain people‟s opinion. They cause no health
problems to wildlife – compare one or two motorcycles to a hunting pack or 30 men with
rifles – crazy (96)
Tennis courts would be excellent for the younger generation and a bowling green would
be good for the village (99)
This should be extended to bridleways for the equestrians in the area – multiuse road
that cater for all (102)
Bowling green would appeal to older generation. Tennis to younger (107)
Sports field is not close to village not easy to access (109)

A Badminton night in the Village Hall, a sports day for the Village at the Cricket Ground

2.5B Recreation Areas
Do you have any concerns about the responsible use, safety and upkeep of any
recreation areas or public spaces? Is access a problem?
Access is no problem for my family but I imagine it is not easy for some e.g. older
persons and those with a disability – to the play area (002)
Parking on pavements or Village Green. The Village Green areas are gradually
disappearing under block paving and parked cars (009)
Too many trees down Applegarth for sledging (010)
Cod Beck Reservoir will always attract undesirables and should be “blocked off” and left
to wildlife (017)
Cod Beck Reservoir unfortunately attracts those who have no respect for the countryside
and in some cases tragically loss of life. The area is poorly controlled and policed (018)
Although there are plenty of footpaths I think more bridleways should be opened to help
keep the growing number of riders off the roads and out of harms way (019)
Problem of litter around Reservoir and adjoining car parks (021)
Cod Beck Reservoir – concern about antisocial behaviour of some campers and litter
and vandalism (022)
The road to Thimbleby not safe for children to walk to. Cars going too fast, no footpath,
hedges too high (27)
The road to sports field not very safe foe children to use – no footpath (28)
CCTV or entrances only ? village which could be used f any major problems (not in
village) (30)
Children to be kept under better control. Dogs on leads through fields (31)
Dogs and children not kept under control where a public footpath goes through field, with
or without livestock (e.g. sheep) in them (32)
The hand rail supports on the steps to the valley and the path to the steps, since it has
been fenced off, has become very muddy needs slabs / gravel on. (41)
Vandalism in the play area (43)
That all the responsibility falls to small groups of volunteers. that areas, such as the
reservoir, are avoided by local people because of litter, crowds and perceived dangers
(59)
Litter blows from play area to fields and farm track next to it (69)
Vandalism at sheep wash (71)
Cyclists don't appear to know that they can use the bridleway, not footpaths, and don't
know the difference (81)
I think the children‟s play area, whilst well equipped and maintained, is somewhat
isolated, and therefore could have security problems (82)
Misuse and overuse of sheep wash (83)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 12 of 35
Older children enjoy using play area but behaviour of a few teenagers can be intimidating
and difficult. Access via footpath to Thimbleby a problem (86)
The Football field, cricket field are too far away from the village along a dangerous road
for younger children. The play area is difficult to access with wheelchairs/buggy‟s/prams
because of the rutted lane and stones in front of the reservoir gate (95)
Somehow – encourage kids to look after their dedicated play areas (12-15 yr olds for
example) (96)
Cost implications would have to be addressed re long-term maintenance etc (105)
Youths in play area at night (106)
Play area is out of view. If it was more central villagers could see what children were
doing (109)
The Applegarth ramps etc look very precarious (116)
Vandalism (119)
Concrete lumps in play area. School groups using late at night – should not be used
after 8 as old folk are disturbed by screaming and shouting. Litter left. Nobody seems to
check it regularly (121)
“Yobbish” behaviour, vandalism, litter (139)
As long as users are responsible/take litter away etc (153)
Main concerns are the litter an dog mess which despoil many local paths on a regular
basis (157)
Dog fouling (171)
Supervision (175)
Poor car parking areas (181)
Keeping footpaths clear and free from dog dirt (187)
That they are kept in good condition – play area good but because it is out of the way it is
a soft target for vandalism (191)
Funding? (195)
Better maintenance of play area (197)
Play area too far out of the Village (207)
Some kids graphitise and spoil the Play Area and ruin the fun for others (209)
Does the gate to the play area shut yet? Sometimes the cycle track at the play area has
been “re-designed” with steep ramps etc by the older children – could anything more
challenging be made especially for them? (217)
Sports Field too far away for adequate supervision and security (218)
Stop youngster‟s activities in church yard. To close gates and make it a trespass area
after certain hours, prosecutions. All dogs on lead at Reservoir. More wardens to stop
camping and fines – prosecution. If people are daft enough to go into the water – no
legal aid money to take Water Authority to court (228)
None (231)
Not applicable (232)
Not for volunteers therefore the Council would have to be involved (239)
Parking! (252)
Lighting to get to areas. Litter. Parents unaware of what kids are doing. Car Parking
(255)
(Is access a problem?) – Yes but can be overcome (256)
Parking (258)
Access to Sheep Wash and Cod Beck (269)
Litter and dog fouling (277)
Main concern is these areas only cater for the younger age group not the 11 years +
(280)
Play area badly placed. Would be better in centre of Village (282)
The problems at Sheep Wash (288)
Litter (297)
2.6 Security
Would you like to see security improved? If you have any suggestions, please give
details
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 13 of 35
This relies on local people and I can see CCTV could be the most appropriate option but
it has to be watched 24/7 to be effective so its costs more really (002)
Is there neighbourhood watch?! (003)
Notices on lamp posts/notice board when thieves are about. Better communication in
general about Neighbourhood Watch – who is doing what and contact numbers (009)
Bus shelter, church grounds are both vulnerable areas (012)
Village Policeman (013)
Return of village beat Constable or similar (016)
Let‟s have a Village resident Bobby back, to follow up crime enquiries and give
assurance to residents, and have fixed penalty tickets to cars obstructing footways (017)
Have a Village Policeman (018)
Security patrols/guards at Sheep Wash/Cod Beck Reservoir (022)
A Village Policeman gave an extra confidence that there would be a sensible response to
a problem. I‟m sure that restoration is a forlorn hope (024)
Entrance to village (29)
(Who would watch CCTV? – In the village, Northallerton, York or wherever. If too far
away cost could outweigh use) (32)
CCTV / Car parks (43)
How about after hours drinking – driving. And the shooting brigade drinking and then
driving off in their 4x4 – Unsafe?? (44)
Village policemen (50)
CCTV at entrances only of village which could be used if any major problems (not in
village) (30)
Village Bobby (51)
Definitely no CCTV - if we need this in our village we‟re lost! Its false security and
infringes privacy (56)
Bring back a resident policeman who is interested in the safety of the village. Make Back
Lane a gated road (69)
Occasional appearance of a policeman / police car on a weekend evening (75)
Regular meeting re neighbourhood watch would help to highlight problems. Discussions
may result in improvement. More people need to volunteer to keep a vigilant eye in each
area of the villages. The police can be invited to speak and make suggestions for
improvement of the scheme (90)
Osmotherley is very secure to those who are not „flashy‟ (95)
The village can easily be protected and fitted with a deterrent. All burglaries in recent
years tend to be overnight when there is no surveillance. The village has 3 road
entrances. Get CCTV installed at each entrance. You need police to buy-in to use
cameras for security purposes only – not traffic purposes for example. When a robbery is
reported a simple check on the tapes would give serious clues, maybe original No plates
of suspects. If the scheme works move cameras further away from village centre and
include more houses (96)
(installing CCTV cameras) If there is evidence to suggest a need for this, Yes. (102)
Are there any community police? If not, their presence ought to be useful. (102)
CCTV – only if necessary (105)
Designated posting area for notices of local importance (121)
What neighbourhood watch scheme (130)
Didn‟t know neighbourhood watch existed (135)
Get the Police to walk round Village at night (152)
(Extending the Neighbourhood Watch scheme?) – Wasn‟t aware there was one. Don‟t
recognise an issue with security and please no CCTV – no call for it in the Village
environment! The current Village Community atmosphere is the most valuable security
“blanket” (153)
More information and publicity (155)
It would be nice to see Policemen/women actually walking round the Village and
generally having a much higher profile (167)
More policemen around the Village (168)
Do not wish to see any increase in extra street light or CCTV (170)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 14 of 35
Communications – did not realise we had a neighbourhood watch scheme anyway (174)
Perhaps “Neighbourhood Watch” exists informally to a wider extent than the organised
network (186)
CCTV probably not popular but its discreet could be very good way at monitoring vehicles
leaving Village e.g. after a break in (191)
Better surveillance at Sheep Wash – increasing incidents are of growing concern (196)
More commitment by the real Police would be welcome – not just the occasional visit!
(200)
Some better way of keeping people informed of burglaries etc. within the parish. Better
ways of disseminating information. Perhaps information could be displayed next to the
calendar (210)
A greater Police presence (216)
Police Patrols (220)
More Police presence to outlying areas e.g. Sheep wash, Square Corner (221)
A CCTV camera overlooking the junction in the middle of the Village (222)
We have a very good informal neighbourhood watch; perhaps some of the older
residents would appreciate informal checking to see if they‟re alright? (226)
I am very strongly against CCTV. It is ugly and intrusive and has no place what-so-ever
in rural life. CCTV will only be effective if there is a response system in place, i.e.
Security Guards, Police etc. I am very familiar with CCTV through my work with Local
Authorities and I know how disruptive it is to install, and costly to manage. Even with the
very best multi-million pound schemes criminals get away! (227)
To include Back Lane, North End, South End, Clack Lane top of the Bank with CCTV
cameras (228)
Perhaps more checking on each others property if we are away form home (neighbours)
(229)
Good regular police information localised to the Village. No more machines (230)
More police presence (231)
Police patrol (232)
No sorry (234)
CCTV cameras – definitely not (235)
No issues of late – thefts or car damage (scratching) etc (236)
Get a Village Policeman; NONE of the current problems would happen if PC Barningham
was still here. Progress! (237)
Don‟t feel this is a particular problem (244)
Better lighting especially away fron village centre (249)
CCTV at each approach road (253)
Being neighbour aware. CCTV in car park (255)
A car park with CCTV (256)
CCTV in and out of Village (259)
Bring back the Village Policeman (272)
CCTV on all entrances to Village but only to be looked at if a crime has been committed
(280)
Better reporting of incidents to raise awareness (284)
(Installing CCTV cameras?) – Definitely not|! (287)

25-45 – Keep fit/aerobics etc (151)
0-5 to 65 and over – General suggestion: Village may suite a “Film Club” which could
use Village Hall. Choose its films month to month and could be an attractive/vibrant
cross-age/cross community social activity and save trips out to
Teesside/Middlesbrough/Thirsk for people. Have seen it work elsewhere could work

2.8 Buses
No buses through Thimbleby (004)
Buses often leave early so are useless. 8 am bus to Stokesley (010)
I am sure the bus service is a valuable way of those unable to drive/without cars to go in
and out of the Village. Essential to those in the Village (012)
Bus service straight to Middlesbrough/Darlington or York (014)
Use it or lose it. Even if you have a car try using the bus at least once a week – it is
convenient, economic and “hassle” free (015)
Connections for Teesside Hospitals (appointments) (016)
Stokesley connections forward to Middlesbrough are not easy, for Hospital visits etc
(017)
Direct services to Hospitals should be provided (018)
Tie bus times to train arrivals at Northallerton (023)
Bus service seems very good (30)
Would use bus if route went through Thimbleby (31)
Some routes to include Thimbleby (32)
Better and simpler “Times Tables”. A later bus from town, maybe 7pm (33)
Bus route into Middlesbrough Centre (39)

I have rarely seen anybody on the moors bus. Do we, as village residents, pay towards
the upkeep of this bus? (44)
Thimbleby does not have a bus service (46)
Moors bus service has got worse - unable to visit anywhere due to first bus 1 o‟clock.
Should go direct to Helmsley as before (55)
Helmsley in summer (takes too long on moors bus) (59)
A later bus, the last goes at 5. (67)Stop comparison of a regulated impersonal bus with
warm car for individual use, they are just not the same (69)
issue bus passes to pensioners and reduce costs (81)
I object strongly that the school bus does not collect 2 children from Thimbleby and the
tax payers money is spent on expensive taxi journeys - most of which is not for the 2 x
1.5mile required but for the taxi to get to Osmotherly. There are people in Thimbleby who
do not own a car or drive! There should be a Wednesday service (85)
Stokesley bus in morning - 8 o‟clock-ish - to allow school children to get to Stokesley
School. Moors bus should be straight through (86)
It is important that a regular bus service is maintained - particularly for the elderly (90)
Moors bus are not wheelchair/buggy accessible. Bus service to N/A were tried but drivers
were surly. They would not put the ramp down for the wheelchair. They would set off
before we had the wheelchair safely sited. The buses never stuck to time table and were
frequently cancelled without notice leaving us stuck in N/A with no way home (95)
The Moor‟s bus timetable and destinations have deteriorated (107)
It would be useful if early/late buses went to Rail Station – currently only those in the
middle of the day do (112)
Later bus from Northallerton – Easier links to Middlesbrough (114)
Extend services till 7 pm ish? (118)
Moors bus to Helmsley and Hawnby run more frequently (119)
Remove bus stop at South side of West End as it is dangerous for people to cross there
and hence is seldom used anyway (121)
The Moors bus service has deteriorated from 10 am first bus to (this year) 1 pm and has
ceased to go to Helmsley so causing bad connections and late times to go anywhere
(122)
Bus shelter is often littered and seat dirty (126)
Re-instate Direct Helmsley Bus (142)
The round trip to Helmsley for the Summer months and a bus from Osmotherley to
Helmsley on Fridays (Market Day) (147)
We would find an 8 am service to Stokesley very useful for children going to school.
(This is the only hour of the day not covered at present ) (148)
Services to Helmsley and surrounding Villages without having to change at Chop Gate
(150)
Direct buses to a larger centre e.g. Darlington/Middlesbrough (151)
Both of the following mean I don‟t use service as much as I would otherwise. The last
service is too early: from rail to Osmotherley it‟s 1559! Why can‟t the service continue to
e.g. 1900 (for rail users) with a last mid-evening service for later town users? Morning
services need to link in properly with rail services i.e. need to be look at user friendly and
integrated service! (153)
Direct service to Middlesbrough possibly one answer (160)
Wall inside bus shelter needs attention and a new bin (with lid) provided (161)
Unable to pass any meaningful comment I work full time and rely on my car. If I was
retired I would probably use this service more often (172)
Recent graffiti in the shelter was very difficult to erase from the stone (the perpetrators
are in rented temporary residence with adults) (175)
If there was a later bus back from Northallerton (187)
Osmotherley to Helmsley restored (193)
Clean bus shelter (197)
Better link with rail travel i.e. not having to wait a long time between arrival of bus and
departure of train and vice versa (198)
Service to continue into the evening (199)
___ Moor Bus needs more advertising, plus parking kept off the Bus Stop (which is very
bad) (203)

Bus to Thirsk (205)
In the past, a bus to Thirsk once a week on market day (Monday) was useful (206)
There is no School Bus to Stokesley! The children have to pay to get back and there just
is not a bus that takes at all (209)
Evening bus service and later evening return to allow taking part in activities in evenings
in Northallerton and Hospital visiting (218)
Clear timetable on central notice board (222)
We often use the bus to go to Northallerton and then catch a train but have to arrive back
early – a later bus would be good (226)
I commute to York by train. Train times to York are 7.45 am or 8.15 am. There is no
connecting bus service. My train returns to Northallerton at 18.00, again there is no
connecting bus. . I would prefer not to have to drive! (227)
Moors buses by going and coming to the Village via Helmsley and missing Stokesley,
saves spending a lot of time in Stokesley on a Sunday (50 minutes) with nothing to do,
everything closed down, the old Pine Shop as was, closes down for refreshments at 4
pm. On a cold/wet afternoon, no fun to be in Stokesley. Need buses to get to Helmsley
as soon as possible, and increase the Moors buses at Chop Gate to Ossy – more
frequent (228)
A bus on? certain days to meet 3.57 pm train from York instead of having to walk to Buck
Inn for the 4.51 bus, similarly the Newcastle train arrives 4.05 pm Northallerton. Perhaps
a bus from Osmotherley to Helmsley on Market Day
Reinstate Moors Bus routes as in 2002/03 (231)
Better routes on Moors Bus (232)
I often find bus empty going in and out of Osmotherley (what a waste of money) (234)
Resume Hawnby/Helmsley in summer (236)
Provide direct link to Helmsley (240)
Straight to Boro (244)
Speed restriction through Ellerbeck to enable me to get to bus stop (253)
Social on Sundays (259)
The Moors Bus would be used more if it went to Helmsley (276)
Friday evenings into Northallerton (280)
“Official” bus stop at top of Clack Lane so school bus will stop there too (282)
More regular service to Hutton Rudby (283)
Links to Teesside – help with commuting and visitors (park and ride) (284)
Service to Middlesbrough (285)
(Would any changes to routes, times, or destinations, encourage you to use the bus
more?) – Yes re-routing through Thimbleby (290)
Osmotherley to Hutton Rudby (around school times) (292)
Bus passes for older people (297)
(Did you find the service reliable?) – mainly (303)
2.9 Professional Services
Better signposting, times of Clinic (baby) and never assuming “people will know” would
improve access (001)
Both services assume local knowledge. There should be signs in the window saying
when and what is available at the Old Hall – and indicate if it is closed for any reason. I
disturbed the Priests when I first went as I got the wrong door!!! (002)
Are there details available in Village on times, facilities and stopping places for the mobile
library? (015)
Two Library Staff to man Mobile Library as before cuts (016)
The Mobile Library is invaluable and should be continued (017)
Mobile library comes every 3 weeks (27)
Mobile library comes 3 weekly (28)
Very adequate (29)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 19 of 35
Very lucky to have these in village (30)
More computer lessons again (33)
Chiropodist (51)
The doctors surgery is great because its „Drop in‟ - not very private though! (59)
Nice warm library room with free internet access (69)
Details should be more available (73)
Ability to order books in advance on the internet (75)
Library does not stay in village long enough (76)
I have used the mobile library when convalescing. It is essential for elderly and those
unable to leave the village due to illness (85)
The weekly collection and delivery of prescriptions is a step in the right direction! (90)
I don't use the doctors surgery because i don't use that practice (93)
Neither are wheelchair accessible. I tried to use the baby clinic but could not get the twin
pram into the clinic so had to try to lift the twins out of pram (one on each arm) and open
the door. The Health visitor was terrified I was going to have an accident so now comes
round the house. Facilities in Ozzy for anyone but the single, able-bodied are rubbish.
Tried to use baby clinic once without success (95)
I don‟t particularly use them but I am mobile – should keep if used regular (96)
Easier access for disabled to surgery (100)
Doctors Surgery in Osmotherley must be maintained (117)
I would use Library if not working (121)
We were not aware these services were in fact available. If better publicised then usage
may increase (143)
Wider publication of information on services - wasn‟t aware of these (153)
Excellent facilities appreciated greatly (175)
Will use mobile Library when unable to visit main Library (205)
Have used both in years past. Will use both, when incapacitated (206)
Do not use this Surgery (207)
The Mobile Library comes at work and school time so most cannot enjoy it (209)
But I feel they are a good idea for those that do (212)
Occasionally used the mobile library. I used the bus a lot when my children were
younger, but not now they‟re at school – if it came outside school times it would be
brilliant to use it with them (217)
More time for Library (218)
My family use the Doctors at Hutton Rudby (221)
Central notice board to have Library visit times notified (222)
Cold the Library visit in the evening or over the weekend? (227)
The Library van has a limited (as must be) choice (229)
Rarely (230)
Mobile Library is vital (231)
Essential it continues (232)
Library would be used more in evenings, and in centre of Village (236)
Would like them to continue and would probably use them in the future (246)
(Doctors Surgery) Probably would if it stops at Ellerbeck (253)
Doctor visits house (272)
Perhaps the Mobile Library could come to Thimbleby (288)
Use Mobile Library but not often (291)
E.g. Chiropody mainly (298)
Chiropody Clinic e.g. once per month (299)
When I lived there (303)
2.10 Rubbish Collections
Any comments about the new rubbish collections?
I didn‟t realise the above facilities existed. Thank you I will endeavour to use them (002)
Plastic would be useful (002)
The black bins should be weekly and green once a fortnight (003)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 20 of 35
Poor organisation, fortnightly collections is not regular enough for household waste (005)
Weekly collections of household rubbish were better (007)
Plastic bottles (008)
Glass and plastic bottles collected from houses (009)
Wheelie bins outside houses make the Village look a mess. Can people be required to
have bags instead of bins if they have nowhere to store a bin out of sight? (009)
Plastics (010)
Plastics (012)
The two bin systems are great – should have been introduced years ago (012)
Very good (013)
Summer months rubbish bins need empting weekly (014)
Plastic bottles e.g. milk bottles and carriers (015)
More kerbside collection of tins, glass and plastic to cater for elderly people (016)
Kerbside collection for more items, Glass, Tins, Plastic etc to cater for those without cars
or elderly (017)
Alternate Black and Green bin collection is excellent (018)
Everyone should bed able to recycle paper not just the centre of the Village and we need
a place to recycle plastic (019)
Household rubbish should be collected every week (021)
Door step collections (as for papers) may increase recycling (022)
2 weekly intervals is too long in summer for black bins. Collecting compos tables seems
a bit pointless in an area where it is easy to run a compost heap or alternatively own a
cottage with no garden. Direct collection of glass, cans, plastic would be more
environmental use (024)
2 weekly black bin collection inadequate in summer. It is impossible to recycle
cardboard? – it is compost able (025)
Full spectrum to include plastic plus facility to cater for elderly and those without their own
transport (018)
Plastic (020)
Plastic (025)
Green bins to collected to the end of Dec (27)
Very good (29)
New bins more successful than expected (30)
Once per fortnight for black bin collection is insufficient (31)
1) No allowance for those who have a “senior moment” and forget to put the black bin
out. 2) In hot weather, black bins can teem with wildlife. Is this healthy? 3) If they have a
spare green bin capacity, can I have an extra green bin or two? 4) Please provide tin and
glass facilities in the village when the school grounds are locked (32)
Residents and businesses should not be expected to make the collections easier by
having to drag their bins down to the pavements. If they can‟t, for some reason, the bin is
not emptied. Yet we all pay expensive rates. Bins are hazardous and ugly on the street
and should not be left there. Additional Recycling – cardboard and plastic bags (33)
Somewhere for plastics would be good (37)
Other authorities collect paper / plastic / tins etc. This could happen here (41)
Black bins need to be collected weekly as we don‟t have enough space to keep 2 weeks
worth of rubbish. This runs the risk of rats (43)
Fortnightly is not acceptable – summer has been a nightmare – after all I cant recycle a
chicken! Unhealthy – an accident in waiting!! (44)
Quite good (46)
A fortnight is too long for household rubbish to be collected, especially in the summer
(47)
Farm plastic to be collected just as wheely bins are collected. (49)
Services have been reduced. Now fortnightly not weekly rubbish pickup (54)
Revert back to weekly collection (55)
Bins too small for family of four. Needs plastics centre and collection of recycle (56)
Provide plastic bottle recycling container put with other ones (58)
Keeping rubbish for a fortnight is unpleasant. The Wheelie bins are an eyesore. More
recycling facilities please (easy to access) (59)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 21 of 35
Adequate but would like plastic collection (63)
More needs to be done (67)
Collection or facilities for plastic bottles (68)
Bins are difficult for old people. Bins are better because hibernating hedgehogs are not
killed by being crushed while sleeping in nice smelly rubbish bags. Plastic collection (69)
Only that if you have too much rubbish for your bin you are expected to take it to the tip.
What is an occasional bag?? Ludicrous policy, pollution etc.(74)
Inadequate, particularly in the summer (76)
Would be a start! Tim‟s is convenient (recycling)(81)
Would prefer weekly collection, domestic rubbish (82)
Recycling is still insufficient. There should be separate collection boxes for tins, bottles
and cardboard (83)
Cardboard collection, plastic collection, aluminium collection (85)
Plastic bottle recycling needed, tins/glass collections extension to whole village (86)
Fortnightly collection has led to serious degradation of previous service. Waste paper
collection totally unsatisfactory (87)
Paper collection unreliable (88)
No (89)
They work well - as far as they go. In the future it would be good to have crates/bins also
for collection of tins/bottles/foil/rags - to be collected regularly. (90)
No (91)
Unsightly bins now in front of properties (94)
House-to-House collection of all recyclables. It wastes energy taking it to the tip. Publish
a leaflet for every household stating what can be recycled. New rubbish collections
should be weekly. We have 2 children in nappies. After 1 week our bins stink to high
heaven. At the end of 2 they are unbearable. They must be a health hazard particularly to
the refuse collectors who have keeled over with the smell (95)
Collect garden rubbish every 2 weeks. MUST collect household rubbish every week. Bin
men do half the work they did 10/20 yrs ago, equipment is easier to use, lifting is almost
unheard of nowadays. The refuge service is easier and cleaner to work for but all we
hear is more and more restrictions on their service. I fully agree in recycling but the
refuge service is a joke (96)
Back bags should be removed weekly. The village appearance is spoilt on a Monday and
sometimes throughout the week by people not taking in their black and green bins (99)
For paper and plastic from Tim Swales Garage (102)
Seem to run efficiently (102)
Fortnightly rubbish collections inadequate – Plastic collection or centre would help (105)
Paper collection is at best unreliable (112)
We were not told at the start that paper would only be collected from centre of Village
(113)
They seem to have settled down (114)
Plastic recycling, paper collection point for those outside the Village (115)
I take all my re-cycling to B&Q because they have plastic re-cycling, which accounts for
most of my re-cycled rubbish. It would be nice if plastic was also collected in the Village
or better still from my house (116)
Would like paper collection from Back Lane (117)
Keeping rotting food in bags for two weeks – not good! (118)
We don‟t have wheelie bins due to access problem but need our rubbish to be collected
weekly rather than fortnightly as nowhere to store rubbish bags especially in Summer
(119)
Don‟t like to see wheelie bins everywhere from Oswaldene to Drove Road – often put out
day before collection. Could paper collection be on Monday as well to avoid Village
looking so messy (121
Plastic (121)
Very confusing and total waste of time when not using Green bin, causes extra
rubbish/smells to build up especially when using Black sacks (122)
Weekly rubbish collection in Summer to avoid smell etc (124)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 22 of 35
Papers could be collected from not just the centre of Village as those not living in
Osmotherley have to take papers elsewhere i.e. Northallerton (126)
None (127)
Unsightly bins left out (128)
Yes, improvement on previous scheme is appreciated (131)
Household rubbish should be collected weekly not fortnightly (132)
The wheelie bins are all over the village days after the collection it looks messy (135)
Yes I don‟t like the wheelie bins. They look awful stuck in the way. At least the Village
looked tidy before, when the bins liners were collected. (137)
Would use a centre for plastic. The B&Q site is too far out of the way and is always full
(138)
Garden rubbish should be composted and used in the garden in which it originates.
Instead of Green/Black bin collections every other week it should be:- Week 1 Black;
Week 2 Black; Week 3 Green and then repeat 2:1 cycle (139)
A fortnightly collection of domestic refuse is inadequate (140)
Kerbside bottle and tin collections (142)
Collection of household rubbish every other week is insufficient. There are only two of us
and we recycle lots, however, capacity is sometimes not sufficient. Also if you forget to
put the bin out it‟s a long time to wait (143)
Plastics, clothing? (143)
Many other Councils collect material for re-cycling from households to encourage re-
cycling. I think the Council should provide this service as they have reduced the
frequency of black bin collection. Bottles; paper; plastic and tins (148)
Two weeks is too long for general . . . (149)
Garden refuse collection every two weeks is too much 1+ monthly would be adequate
and will allow house waste to be taken more regularly. As I have no garden, this service
is of no use to me, yet I still pay the same Council Tax as people who benefit (150)
Ordinary household rubbish should be collected weekly as standard. The present
collecting scheme is very unfair on the large numbers of people who do not have a
garden. Improved re-cycling facilities would be most welcome (151)
Black bins each week (152)
Need to look at helping those who aren‟t suitable for wheelies e.g. green waste – what do
we do? (153)
Need facility for plastics please – perverse to have others and not this given amount of
plastic we all use, and doesn‟t assist recycling not having it. Publicise recycling locally –
wasn‟t aware of TS facility. Promote school centre – they get the funds don‟t they? (153)
Black bins need emptying weekly in summer (154)
No paper collections from houses directly also glass (155)
I think the paper collection should cover all the Village not just the centre (156)
The bins make the Village look untidy and uninviting on both Sundays and Mondays at
least the bags were gone on Monday and collected mostly from behind people‟s
property!!! Bins were a backwards step could have used different coloured BAGS!!
Gate box collections for glass, plastic, tins etc not everyone has cars (160)
The wheelie bins which are left at the front of some properties all the time are very
unattractive. Householders with no back access etc should use black bags or conceal
the wheelie bins (some people leave them out full of rubbish for several days! (166)
Pleased with the new system but wish the bins could be cleared away and not left for day
on end by householders (167)
Plastics collection point would be appreciated (168)
Need for plastic collection – otherwise very good (169)
Green rubbish should be collected weekly – not having a large garden means we are not
too affected by the green bins (170)
Plastic (170)
Why is paper collected only from the Village centre – we all pay the same council tax
(171)
I would like to see collections for newspapers, plastics and bottles or a local recycling
point in the Village (172)
Wheelie bins are an eyesore in Village centre (173)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 23 of 35
Cannot see what it achieves. Garage is never open when we are at home/have time.
Would make sense to be more visible as we use in France (174)
Take some getting used to involving lifting, carrying which can be arduous (175)
Plastic recycling bin (176)
Black bin should be collected every week. School and Tim recycling very good (177)
I was not aware of the recycle centre at the School and will be using it! (178)
Plastic collection (181)
Would like plastic to be collected at recycling centres (182)
Plastic recycling (183)
It is good (184)
The wheelie bins have reduced the visual attractiveness of the Village (185)
Some wheelie bins are kept at the front of properties and are unsightly. Have the owners
been given the option of black bag collection? Black bags should be collected weekly
(186)
Bin liners collected weekly – we have no garden waste (187)
Household rubbish should be collected weekly (188)
Black bins should be emptied weekly (189)
Papers should be collected from the houses. Plastic bottle centre would be good (190)
Generally OK but collecting recycling from door like Germany, etc is more forward
thinking – would need region to back it though (191)
Plastic (191)
Plastic collection facilities (193)
Bottles and plastic in the Village (194)
Until recycling for everything i.e. tins/bottles etc is collected from houses it will never be
efficient. Household rubbish once a fortnight is not enough, it should be weekly
especially in summer (195)
Recycling in one bin at doorstep, compartment for cans, paper, general etc (197)
A very good idea if it encourages people to reduce waste but perhaps we need a leaflet
or a talk advising householders about how to do this e.g. refusing excess packaging and
flattening cartons which are not recyclable (198)
Recycling of all types of plastic (199)
Not satisfactory. Household waste should be collected weekly. Recycling will only
succeed if done on the doorstep (200)
Plastic collection (201)
Wider paper collection (201)
Would like glass and cardboard collections (207)
I would like paper, glass and tins to be collected as well as the resumption of weekly
collections of general rubbish. Green bins to collect garden waste is not necessary and
discourages composting (204)
Cardboard? Plastic? (212)
Plastic (221)
Recycling for plastic (227)
Plastic and cardboard collections should be available (233)
Change green bins for re-cycling bin, compartmental (236)
Plastic and cardboard (239)
Bigger black bins! For family use (244)
Should be weekly black bins (203)
Excellent (205)
Very good (206)
Totally inadequate (208)
I think it makes people re-cycle more (210)
Bins standing outside houses do not improve general Village attractiveness (211)
A shame there‟s only B&Q for plastic – it‟s often too full to use. More plastic facilities, e.g.
at the tip, or a scheme like in West Yorkshire where card and plastic are collected by the
Council from households (217)
When full they are awkward and heavy for one person on steep drives and impossible on
ice (218)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 24 of 35
We are miles behind on encouraging re-cycling. Need separate facilities for
plastic/paper/bottles/metal/cardboard (222)
Should be non-centralised (223)
It‟s rubbish – the Black bins full within the week (226)
1. Not informed re paper collection? new venue. 2. The charge of £20 to a house-
holder to remove “bulk” is expensive. It is no wonder people put “bulk” in public places
and leave it. 3. At one time we could leave “bulk” items with bin. The Council only have
themselves to blame by wanting a cheque a fortnight in advance. (228)
Once a week please! Bins smell after two weeks (229)
They‟re demanding (N. Supra) too much given local rating levels (230)
Black bins should be collected weekly (231)
When green bins are suspended, collect black bins instead (232)
Yes I would like to see plastics and cardboard recycling facilities more accessible (234)
Green bins are usually empty and a waste of time collecting them. I would prefer black
bins collected weekly OR alternate black bin and recycling bin collections (235)
Black bins should be emptied WEEKLY (236)
SHOULD BE ONE CENTRAL POINT FOR COLLECTIONS. School is locked so no
access out of school hours and during holidays. Present system poor (237)
As School is locked mostly, it is not a good place (239)
No (241)
We currently take plastics to Northallerton. Would be nice to do it more locally in the
Village (242)
Problems with rubbish collection – take our own to sites now (246)
New arrangements have caused problems. We have adopted “Self Help” and take
rubbish to Civic Amenity Tip (247)
Why should we have to pay for green bin bags if we don‟t have a green bin? (248)
Two weekly for black bins is too long in summer – smells (environment!!) (251
Fortnightly for black bins is barely enough if overflow bags are not accepted, even with
maximum recycling of bottles, plastic, tins, newspaper . . . (252)
A good service (253)
New system is hopeless as no matter how much you re-cycle the bins are filled within the
fortnight (258)
Bin size too small (261)
Extremely hard when old and frail having to lift two weeks newspapers. It doesn‟t make
life easy, at 85, crippled with arthritis! (263)
It works because a Carer puts the bins out for me (272)
Once a fortnight for rubbish collection is inadequate (273)
1. Paper collection to be extended to all of the Village. 2. 2-weekly household refuse
collection inadequate during summer months (277)
Cardboard needs collecting (278)
Cardboard needs collecting (279)
Not impressed with having to have the rubbish for 2 weeks as it attracts vermin (280)
As in other areas – doorstep collection of glass, and, plus cardboard and plastics. Larger
black bins (282)
Would prefer weekly rubbish collections as storing bin bags full of rubbish for a fortnight
is problematic and a potential health problem (283)
More frequent (284)
It would be better if rubbish was collected weekly (286)
Like the green bin facility (287)
Should be green once a month black three times (289)
Wider collection of paper. Didn‟t know Tim Swales had glass recycling (291)
Less for green bin, more for black bins (292)
More regular recycling for all! e.g. weekly (298)
Even in Village centre not everyone has blue bags for papers – something more solid
needed e.g. Blue box! (299)
Absolutely ridiculous for those who can‟t use wheelie-bins and do not have room to store
2 weeks worth of refuse – becomes a health hazard especially in warm months – on two
occasions in the summer I had maggots in my bin bags (300)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 25 of 35
Didn‟t know about paper collection, again outlying properties don‟t get information (302)
Plastic, paper, can, bottle, compost – all should be collected from home. The “improved”
service is not enough (303)
Its reliable (3041)
2.11 Litter/Dog Fouling
More dog waste bins may stop people picking up the waste and then throwing the bag
and waste into the hedges (003)
Need to stop bags of dog poo being left up trees around the Village (010)
People should be more responsible over dog fouling. Most are, but “pavement” deposits
still occur sometimes (011)
Some people who live in the Village still do not respect the laws and dog fouling down
South End still continues, as well as near footpaths such as Colgate Lane and the walks
off Back Lane (012)
No dog litter bin in North End (014)
More signs against dog fouling and more prosecutions by Hambleton District Council
(016)
One or two prosecutions by Hambleton Dog Section would justify their existence (017)
Dog fouling is still excessive (018)
Probably not easily found by visitors (e.g. on corner of Ruebury Lane) (025)
Plenty of bins. I find villagers use bins occasionally, visitors don‟t (30)
Get residents to use them! I know of several who don‟t clear up after their dogs! (31)
Dog bins should be more visible and more people will use them (33)
There needs to be more dog waste bins e.g. at ends of village and in Back Lane. This
may stop people picking up the waste then throwing the bags, full, into the trees outside
the village (41)
I‟m fed up with locals allowing their dogs to foul along the grass which I mow and where
my animals graze – and allowing their pets to foul on obviously cared for grass. (44)
Dog fouling is a problem (54)
Get dog owners to use bin, not leave bags at corners etc (55)
Some people still refuse to use bins, especially dog walkers when nights are darker (63)
Please provide a dog waste bin on South End beyond the Water works (69)
A lot of dog waste bags on path to top of valley (71)
Would like to see extra at the extremities of the village, e.g. at the water works (75)
Greater enforcement of foul removal to footpaths, including private roads and footpaths
(81)
Are there ANY dog waste bins? (82)
There is irresponsible use of footpaths by some dog owners - particularly throwing away
dog waste in plastic bags! Maybe dog bins along paths would help (86)
People don't seem to use them, particularly out of village (87)
No (89)
In winter, the footpaths in South End are covered in dog dirt. This is dangerous to the
children, perhaps a publicity campaign showing the damage it can do to children is
appropriate (95)
Generally the village is clean and respected so I don‟t think more bins are necessary –
dog waste bins could be increased (96)
There needs to be a litter bin half way between Top Shop and Rueberry Lane (114)
Possible dog waste bins on footpaths immediately around Village (115)
Bins should also be located at the edges of the Village, especially dog bins (116)
Sheep Wash needs bins (119)
Have dog waste bin at bottom of South End near Water Board (121)
Could be one on route to Caravan site/YHA (122)
You don‟t often see any litter so there must be sufficient bins (126)
Litter bins needed at Sheep wash and Cod Beck Reservoir (127)
No litter bins at Cod Beck or Sheep wash, but would people use them (128)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 26 of 35
There should be a lot more bins in the Summer when the Village is busy, the bins are
overflowing with rubbish (135)
Could do with litter bins up at the reservoir that might stop all the litter that‟s thrown all
over (137)
We are finding dog waste in plastic bags thrown into our hedge or at the side of the road
(Back Lane) (138)
People put dog waste into plastic bags – but a significant number of those plastic bags
are thrown into gardens and hedgerows! (139)
The rubbish left in the Village during the Summer months is often disgraceful (147)
Horses foul pavements on Clack Lane (149)
One deeded top of Bog Hole may stop poo bags thrown into woods etc (160)
Dog waste bins at the North and South ends of the Village would be useful (166)
Some people will not use dog waste bins on principle but a few more bins might help
(167)
Posters re dog waste are often torn down – some owners do not take any notice of them
(168)
Dog fouling remains unacceptable including on Cleveland Way path to Middle Style (171)
Insufficient bins, litter and dog waste bins, at Reservoir (183)
Or people don‟t clean up after their dogs (187)
Dog waste bins – locate not just around centre of Village but on most popular footpaths
too. More litter bins at Cod Beck (191)
Still enough people do not pick up dog waste (193)
Fouling along the Cleveland Way (between the fields) is a problem. (Who is going to
carry a poo bag for miles?) (195)
Some people do not clean up after their dog (197)
The Village centre is kept well but approach roads are littered with junk food packaging
(198)
Dog waste bins should be placed at all places where footpaths enter the Village (200)
Any more bins and they still wont be used by people who don‟t use the existing ones
(205)
Some people will never use a bin, even if one is one metre away (206)
Bins need to be emptied (211)
Dog bins required at Sheep wash (216)
It‟s a real shame when dogs are allowed to foul pavements especially where
pushchairs/young children use them (217)
People in general should be liable for dog waste (221)
Litter bins to be better maintained (222)
Could we please prosecute for dog fouling to stop those few owners who have no respect
for their community? There is no point putting all those signs up if no one acts on them
(227)
People, village as well as tourists don‟t always use the correct facilities for litter or dog
waste. Take a photo, people are told to do, supposing you happen to have a camera
with you! Would you want a punch on the nose? (228)
I suggest villagers should rush out and confront those whose animals don‟t know better!
(with an appropriate bag) (229)
chacun à son chien (each to his dog) (230)
Enough dog waste bins – just a pity that they are not used by everyone! (233)
There are enough dog waste bins but dog owners seem to be blind or being selfish!!
(234)
Some litter bins need renewing. Sheep wash needs attention – regular pick up (236)
Roaming dogs cause fouling (239)
Dog fouling still happens along Clack Lane and into the Village – particularly on the grass
verges – possible more signs and bins might eliminate this problem (241)
Along Clack Lane is often messy and not cleared up (242)
Pick your own dog muck up (256)
Pick your own up (259)

Clack Bank is a toilet and people do not pick up. We need at least two dog bins. It
makes me sick when walking with children (262)
Sometimes litter is thrown from cars onto my front garden (272)
The problem lies with irresponsible dog owners or visitors who don‟t use the bines (277)
Dog fouling is a problem. Large notices are needed in an attempt to stop it happening
but it‟s a very difficult problem to solve (280)
Education for locals re dog waste – more fines! (289)
Definitely more bins for dog waste (292)
Dog fouling on footpaths is a problem (297)
Rubbish bins are an eyesore in our type of conservation area. Commercial operations
that produce litter should provide their own waste collection local to premises i.e. Fish
Shop or Ice Cream Sales (304)
2.12 Water Supply
Lack of information when lost supply (001)
Its been OK since winter but information has been poor when it breaks down (002)
It is not as good as a few years ago – it is too hard. Supposedly to improve our water
but it hasn‟t (003)
Dirty water (006)
New supply is far worse (007)
1. Water is very hard – more cleaning is required which is bad for the environment and
sinks/bathrooms look unsightly. 2. It tastes worse than before. 3. We were not asked if
we wanted this “improvement”! (009)
Water cut off during power cuts (010)
Water quality has suffered since being brought in from the other side of Bedale (as I
understand) it leaves sandy deposits in kettle and scum deposits with soap. Previous
local water was never a problem (011)
Water has a scum until run off for a period of time (014)
The hard water has produced a wide variety of problems not previously experienced
(015)
Tap water contains sum all the time and necessitates use of water filter jug and buying
cartridges – expensive! (016)
Water has to be filtered to clear impure matter – lets have the old Village supply back on
tap (017)
We used to have good quality water the new so called “blended” supply is terrible with
associated lime scale problems (018)
Hard now (020)
Water quality poor against previous soft water (021)
Water quality/drink ability has deteriorated since recent “improvement” works (023)
It now furs the kettle. It also seems dependent on mains electricity (024)
Now “hard” but still smells of chemicals at times (025)
Water too hard (27)
Water too hard – Limescale (28)
Tastes horrible (29)
Although tastes horrible (We drink bottled) (30)
Leaks on Bog Hole Bank, never properly repaired (31)
Leaks on Upper Bog Hole Bank always re-appear (32)
It stains pure wool if it drops on it for any time. It also stains badly silver plate cutlery. Tea
made with it badly stains crockery (33)
Not as good as before (34)
I preferred the soft water (37)
The water is very “Hard” (39)
It is too hard, causes problems with scaling etc (41)
Too hard, too many Lime deposits (42)
There is a skin in top of the water (43)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 28 of 35
It is unsatisfactory and leaves a rim of debris, god knows what floating on the top.
Imagine what reaction it has on our digestive tract? (44)
The water is cloudy and tastes unpleasant (45)
The water quality leaves much to be desired with all the limestone deposits (47)
Very poor Quality (48)
Ok (49)
Chalky (51)
The quality has deteriorated over the past 2 yrs. (Filter units are necessary but the costs
are high) (52)
Too hard (53)
Too much chlorine. We have to filter our drinking water (54)
Terrible taste, no soap suds (55)
Very hard water and needs a quality test (56)
Tastes awful. Ruins electrical items. Ruins baths and showers (59)
Too much Lime scale in kettles and around taps (61)
It tastes dreadful, furs kettles, taps etc. It never used to before (63)
It tasted horrible, marks the glasses and is not Cod Beck reservoir water (67)
Taste is unpleasant (68)
For a year now the quality has been very bad and sediments foul up kettles, toilets,
central heating did make the water disgustingly blotchy when used to prepare cups of tea
(69)
Its rubbish. It stains everything (72)
Hardness - scum (75)
Water extremely hard (76)
Water is very brown (77)
From conversation I have found that that the supply can be unreliable in bad weather and
there seems to be little or no preparation for dealing with such events (78)
Extremely poor water quality, lack of pressure (81)
Excessive timescale (82)
Tastes ? chlorinated (83)
Generally it needs filtering to taste nice (84)
Supply condition / taste has deteriorated in 20 years (85)
Any power cut now affects supply. Water is too hard (86)
But water taste does, even if quality meets EU standards (87)
Quality very poor (88)
Quality is poorer and 'hard'. (Since 'improvements' recently!) (90)
Water very hard (92)
The water is too hard, taps, kettles etc fur up. Scum on the water when you get washed
(93)
Quality (94)
New limey water is knackering electrical equipment and leaving lime scale everywhere.
Our water is mucky every weekend. We have complained dozens of times (95)
Since supply changed last year quality is poor/deteriorated (96)
Excessively hard - bad for kettles, washing machines etc. Unpleasant to drink (97)
Residents are not happy with the change (99)
It has deteriorated recently, too hard (100)
Quality of water supply (103)
Since we no longer receive our water supply solely from the Cod Beck Reservoir the
quality of water has deteriorated. Water now needs to be filtered – thus an additional
expense (104)
Very dissatisfied – surrounds, sink in Kitchen and basin in Bathroom very badly marked –
as all pans – glass must be dried as spoon as washed to avoid marking. My new electric
kettle broke after 3 months – Retailer advised, on seeing it, filtered water necessary, so
now I filter all drinking water – a great nuisance and so to the cost (105)
Very Hard (106)
Water too hard, undrinkable (107)
Water is poorer quality following recent changes (112)
Tastes horrid, leaves lime scale stains (113)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 29 of 35
The water quality has changed to hard water (115)
The water is too hard, it was better before they redirected our water supply. Kettles and
irons suffer as a result (116)
Now stinks! - and is very hard – will Yorkshire Water pay for increased
repairs/replacement of kettles/washing machines etc? Think not (118)
Water very hard and smells. Have to filter it to drink. Lime scale damage (119)
Too many deposits left (121)
Very unpleasant taste and now hard water (122)
Water harder, tastes worse (124)
Do not get mains water supply (126)
Vulnerable in certain conditions (131)
Taste (134)
There seems to be a lot of bits in the water (135)
It tastes dreadful makes a mess on everything it contacts around the Kitchen and
Bathroom. But is seems they can sell it from out own supply! (137)
But water is very hard these days to what it was (138)
Since a greater proportion of borehole water was incorporated into the supply the water
hardness has increased dramatically. We now have problems with “scum” formation,
scaling, and corrosion of equipment (139)
The hardness of the water causes staining on taps and equipment, also it causes the
dishwasher to smell of hydrogen sulphate (140)
Hard water! Was soft. Why? (142)
Very hard water. I understand previous supply was soft water, why was it changed to
alternative which is hard water. Hard water is detrimental to electrical appliances
requiring water. Have to purchase filters etc (143)
It has changed from being very soft to very hard. Although this is healthier it causes
problems with lime scale (148)
Change to harder water has had adverse effects (149)
The water is too hard (152)
It works!! It seems as through Yorkshire Water have now got standby generaters to keep
things going in case of power cuts! (153)
It stains stainless steel – too hard (154)
Too hard (155)
The amount of lime scale has risen (157)
Too much Lime scale (158)
Much residue left in utensils – too much lime (161)
Hardness of water and sediment (163)
The new system seems to have produced harder water (166)
The water is “scummy” and I feel the supply breaks down too often (167)
We have had to purchase a water purifier or the water is so awful now. Please can we
have our old supply back? (170)
Too hard. We should be using Cod Beck again by now (171)
The water is not palatable to drink without filtering. I am concerned Cod Beck is no
longer used and think the reservoir should be controlled no dogs etc (172)
Very poor quality of water (177)
Too much lime scale (179)
Water harder than used to be (181)
Concerned by hardness comparing how it used to be soft (182)
Lead pipes in some older properties may pose a health hazard (185)
The water often leaves a film when used to make tea (186)
Water hardness is spoiling bathroom/kitchen tap/fittings, and is poor quality to drink (188)
Too much calcium (189)
Water is very hard now (190)
Too hard now and tastes definitely not as good (191)
Very hard needs to be softer (193)
The residue left in kettles and on work surfaces – what is it doing when it collects in my
stomach when I drink it? (194)
Creates a high incidence of lime scale (196)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 30 of 35

Water supply goes off during power cuts (210)
Power cut = water cut (211)
To hard, causing damage to household and occupants (216)
Much preferred the quality of the old water system (217)
Water now hard and creates scum which is hard to remove (218)
To hard! Compared to a few years ago (219)
Higher “hardness” causes “scum” (220)
Too hard not as it used to be (221)
Appalling hard water changed from lovely soft water with no consultation (222)
Quality very poor to hard. Not the same as a few years ago (223)
Not as good as it used to be (225)
Took a month for Water Authority to come and test the meter. Stains benches, glass and
china. Tastes horrible (I filter water). Become “hard” water. Spoils a cup of tea, stains
cup, problems of cleaning “teapot”. Makes tea a darker brown – Yuk! Lead pipes from
main source up to house (228)
It is so hard, these days, I have to use an expensive shampoo and follow up (£12 a
bottle) to combat this (229)
New supply is very hard and very inferior to the previous supply (231)
Very hard water and leaves skin rough (232)
Extremely POOR quality water due to extreme hardness (233)
It tastes awful. It‟s very hard water and destroys all our appliances. Very expensive for
the home owner (234)
Too much lime scale/hard water. Doesn‟t taste nice. The old supply was much better
(235)
No consultation on change of supply. Water is of poor quality – too hard (236)
Too hard with scum on top (237)
Preferred the soft water – better taste and no calcifying (239)
Tastes foul. Makes the glasses in dishwasher have a milky coating (244)
I do not like the hard water supply – changed without consultation (246)
Introduction (without consultation) of hard water mixed in supply (247)
Water is not as good as it used to be (248)
Why did our supply more to Thornton-le-Steward? Previously the supply was fine, now
there is so much lime scale (249)
Prefer softer water (251)
(a) Tastes unpleasant and (b) Goes off when power cuts (252)
No its good (253)
It has improved and now OK (256)
Not as clear as it was (257)
Funny brown colour (259)
It is disgusting and tastes awful (262)
Too hard (265)
Quality and reliability (269)
Water extremely hard (270)
Present water is much too hard and ruins electrics and taps (271)
Pressure sometimes a problem. Taste not brilliant (273)
The loss of water supply during power cuts (274)
Poor quality of drinking water and scum (277)
We used to be able to drink straight from the tap, now it has to be filtered and taps now
have a build up of lime scale (280)
Too hard (281)

No pressure, hard water (288)
Don‟t know enough about water content – is it available? (289)
Extreme scum on boiled water, especially tea. Lime scale deposits on sink, taps, shower.
Clothes don‟t wash as well (291)
Would prefer a better water supply for toilet flushing; (we understand current regulations
limit new installations to a 4-litre flush) (295)
Water quality/hardness is excessive (297)
2.13 Flooding and Drainage
Have you ever had any problems with flooding
Only on the fields (003)
Drain opposite 16 West End has been inadequate in past – hopefully recent work was
relevant. Deep water has caused inconvenience but not flooding (025)
Blocked drains and sewer pipes. Eruptions and spewing from the ground and inspection
chambers (33)
Storm drains being blocked during a storm (43)
On land owned by the “family”. Thanks Yorkshire water for your ineptness. (44)
Water running off road and footpath into houses (Ellerbeck) (48)
Surface water from road (50)
Drains Overflowing (51)
Clay soil on Clack Bank (56)
Only on torrential downpours - run off water on slopes (58)
Stream underground culvert at bottom of garden (74)
Surface water from road (77)
Only natural flooding from hillsides and that constant steam down village, which I think, is
now repaired. No problems to complain about except time taken to fix the stream from
North End (96)
Flooded fields (101)
Water from road side, blocked roadside drains (106)
Extra water from surface drains (122)
Lack of maintenance of surface water drains! (137)
From a Farm (142)
From inadequate drainage from farm yard (143)
Not on main drains. Wish we were (149)
Our drive tends to flood from spring coming off back field (156)
Thimbleby Road always flooded gutters not cleared (160)

On the road and garden (177)
Collapsed drain – now repaired (178)
October 2000 flood from springs overflowing. Ratified by installation of new drain (188)
October 2000 surface water flooding from springs overflow lanes. Rectified by installing

Flooding of Garage during rain storm (190)
Mains drains blocked three times over the past six years (195)
Blocked old drainage system. The whole Village system needs updating (200)
Garage flooded to depth of 24” (216)
In heavy rains, dip in Clack Lane floods. The roads seem better now the drains are
cleared more often – please keep this up! (217)
Broken connecting pipe to my premises caused by Contractors renewing street drain

Heavy rain sometimes threatens! The only house too! (263)
Flash flooding following heavy rains (269)
With flash flood . . . some damp in basement, but dries out quickly (273)
Lots of underground springs and pipes are filling with plant roots so causing pipes to
block and water to re-divert (280)
2.14 Water Culvert (North End) - Can you suggest a solution?
No but would support some disruption to get it right (001)
Not my knowledge base – sorry! (002)
No I can‟t. I‟m not an Engineer! (003)
No – other than remove the big trees, do the work and re-plant them with suitably sized
trees (009)
Bring back to surface bit by bit, like Hawnby (010)
Surely that is what Engineers are for!! (012)
No (013)No, but care must be taken to preserve the original stone water course, an
historical feature of the Village (015)
Difficult to suggest solution without clear explanation of the problem (021)
(Overflow) – only a problem when it freezes (024)
It used to be an open stream – why not an open channel to direct it? Otherwise only a
problem in winter (025)
Make a feature of the stream (31)
Make a feature of it! How about a short stretch of stream in the village? (32)
There should be intensive research into this by experts, as it seems to be an enormous
water waste. It should not be blamed on the trees and think there is no solution other
than removing them. Other areas of England have had the same problems, how did they
solve the problem? (33)
No, but original stone watercourse should be preserved as far as possible (42)
No. The source of the water is the old reservoir which was situated behind Ruebury Hall.
This was the village supply many years ago. It runs along the front of Central House
across the road under the Fawcett‟s workshop (South House) down Applegarth and
continues along the fields to Mount Grace Priory where it feeds the medieval fish ponds.
(45)
Mend it once properly (50)
Have the work done. It will not improve with time, but get worse (52)
Remove tree (55)
If the situation gets worse, the only way would be to resolve it. Putting it off may make the
job bigger and more expensive (58)
Whatever needs doing, needs doing. Water pouring down the hill looks wasteful and is
dangerous in icy weather (59)
Stop the water running down the road at main footpath through to Back Lane; it is very
dangerous when icy. Even more when covered with leaves (61)
New drainage needed (63)
Fit a large bore pipe to carry away water below the centre of the village since the problem
began when a small bore pipe was installed by mistake causing North End to flood and
also suffer from "back-up" when the rain is heavy. There is nothing wrong with the trees
(69)
Sorry, don't know where you are referring (74)
Periodic clearance of culvert, via existing or additional manholes, particularly during /
after autumn leaf fall (75)
There is also an overflow on the hill at South End wearing away the road (84)
Consult engineer experts about the problem (86)
It should be done and new trees planted (90)
It would appear this is caused by trees therefore solution - remove offending trees (92)
Is it not possible to refit the old pump and get the firemen to fill up their ? from it? They
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 33 of 35
are always down at Boghole filling up. At least then we could control the water flow (95)
Surely this is a council problem and they should tell us and repair (96)
Remove old culvert and replace with sealed pipes which cannot be affected by tree roots
(109)
It is an intermittent problem and unless it gets much worse I would leave well alone (113)
I think we have too many trees on North End (114)
Not an Engineer, but increased bore size doesn‟t have to affect trees
Get to the rood of the problem (125)
The work should be done regardless of disruption etc so that it is a permanent solution
(126)
If necessary remove trees (127)
Some trees should be removed as they are now too big (128)
The rota-router cleared the problem in 10 minutes getting the rota-router took 12 months.
Clearing up after rota/router took 6 months (130)
Remove large tree (133)
Chop large tree down (134)
Put a metal pipe under the tree so the roots won‟t grow in to it (135)
Put a metal pipe under the tree, to stop roots growing into culvert (137)
The only solution is to “bite the bullet” and have permanent remedial work done (138)
The tree near the culvert (Chestnut) is a large forest tree and unsuitable for that location.
Until that tree is removed/replaced and a section of pipe (rather than stone slab) culvert
installed the problem will continue! (139)
The waste of water is troubling – the disruption would I suppose be temporary and as
long as the trees etc were replaced this would I feel be acceptable (151)
Wasn‟t aware, need more details including assessment of possible solutions, please?
(That said, I would be reluctant to see mature/healthy trees give their lives for the sake of
a culvert) (153)
Cut out roots in culvert (154)
Professional designed solution for a long term cure (155)
The trees may be the cause of the problem (159)
I wish I could (168)
Cut down the horse chestnut tree when continually blocks the culvert (170)
This clearly involves major work. I would prefer a surface stream as an attractive water
feature (171)
Create a feature of the spring and make a stream (172)
Bring in Engineers (173)
NEEDS CONSTANT MAINTENANCE (175)
Remove offending trees (177)
Replace with a new one despite the disruption (179)
A new one (180)
What overflow? The culvert simply isn‟t large enough and needs rectifying immediately
regardless (181)
Pipe the troublesome stretch. Trees can be replaced (182)
Consult Highways Department (185)
A regular maintenance programme – if that would be cost-effective (186)
Ask an Engineer (187)
Not keen on the removal of trees. Would it be possible to line existing drain with
polypropylene pipe (188)
A large culvert under road (191)
Is thee anyway of doing the work without removing the trees (195)
Make it into a feature! Let the water flow down a channel – unless this is a waste of
water. Would not support removal of mature trees (198)
Make a feature of the overflow (199)
If cost can be met, can watercourse be diverted to avoid having to cut down trees? (200)
No, but it must be sorted at any cost (208)
Clean out correctly or let water flow as a beck as before (216)
Open culvert and make a feature of it (220)
Ossy PP Fact Book/ fact book app02 s2…. draft/ ver 18.05.06 Appx 2.2 Page 34 of 35
Make it a feature it would be useful for local residents to water gardens (221)
A new underground drain, away from tree roots, being installed the full length of North
End, on West side of North End. This is only practicable solution I can see (222)
Not really – but we would hate to lose the trees at North End. Also, they are very
valuable for wildlife (226)
It is a choice between wet feet or no trees I would opt for wet feet! (227)
Cut trees down – sort the problem out once and for all (228)
Some research needed about overflow. Cannot suggest solution (229)
To remove/restrict the incidence of trees in North End would be a visual disaster (230)
Remove trees with roots causing problems carry out remedial work and replant with trees
with shallow roots (231)
As trees appear to be the cause of the problem, they should be removed (232)
Remove the trees and get to the bottom of the problems (234)
Water running down North End. Do what is necessary for permanent solution (236)
Trees absorb water. Make a roadside gully (239)
Do the maintenance properly (249)
Leave the trees alone (250)
Build two chambers – one each side of the area of obstruction and away from the trees.
Then keep clear with regular maintenance. This should apply (more regular) to cleaning
out road gullies (251)
Get the Authority to do it (256)
Perhaps it is possible to use a cutter “mouse” to clear roots ad other debris from the
existing drain (260)
Afraid I cannot advise, but whish I had been informed before moving here!!! (263)
Don‟t remove the trees! They are part of what makes Osmotherley what it is (266)
Not technical enough! (273)
Prompt action once overflow commences. Ensuring drains in North End are kept clear of
leaves, pine needles etc (277)
Create an open overflow and make a Village feature of this (278)
Opening up of culvert might provide interest and improve maintenance (284
Natural water course, doesn‟t cause that many problems (291)
Clean the Culvert (297)
Remove Chestnut tree and make good culvert waterway by root removal on new section
of pipe (304)
