Memo Press The Newsletter for Memorial Presbyterian Church July & August 2009 “Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down, here I am to say that you’re my God. You’re altogether lovely, altogether worthy, altogether wonderful to me.” This beautiful verse from a praise song shifts us from our heads to our hearts. The schedules, the worry, the stressful relationships drift out of focus and God our Father and Creator takes center stage. The forgiveness and love of Jesus pushes out guilt and fear. The Holy Spirit reminds us of a stranger’s smile, a flower that caught our eye, a joyful song we heard earlier. Such moments are a celebration and worship of God. Worship is and is not an hour long service on Sundays with song, prayer, scripture, and sermon. At times all these activities and words compel us to bowour heads or lift our eyes and say thank you to God. I dare say that each of us has attended worship once in our lives and not experienced worship. That is, we leave without having giving our heart to God in thanks for the glory of life. We leave church forgetting how thirsty our soul is for the living God. We stay thirsty, tired, and alone. However, there are also times we stare at the stars and God’s beauty and majesty overwhelms us; or eating on the patio with friends and family that we laugh until tears fill our eyes. In the midst of the joy, we close our eyes and say, “Thank you” to God. That is worship. Most of us will not be able to make it to all the Sunday worship services at Memorial Presbyterian Church this summer. I will not be shocked or dismayed. If you are in the neighborhood I encourage you to come to a smaller, less formal, much early worship (9:00 AM don’t forget). Men, if you can bear the thought, come without a tie. Shorts are welcome. Smiles and hearts thirsty for God are required. If you are out of town I encourage you to visit a church near you. Expand your horizons and go to church outside our denomination. On your vacation, bring a bible and have worship just as a family. Read Genesis 1 and revel in the gift of creation. Read 1 John 3:11-20 to focus on the importance of God’s love and loving people. Hold hands and take turns saying thank you to God for specific ways God given you hope and joy. Be safe and take every opportunity to celebrate, to worship our God! As the deer pants for water brooks, so my soul thirsts for the Lord. - Psalm 42 Love in Christ, Pastor Keith Reed Family: Our Church Family: Nancy Albadri, Daniel Bainbridge, Debbie Bogart, John Cowles, Muriel Crowley, Gloria Driesbach, Shirley Forsman, Leila Gill, Edith Hey, Ann McNally, Charles Power, Donna Roswell, Helen Taylor, Marjory Townsend, Ayden Vogel, Mary Lou Whaley and Cecelia Whelan. cards…. Born and raised in Wenonah, the Cornell University professor was the lead engineer on NASA's highly successful twin rovers Mars expedition. He told former Wenonah Mayor Jack Sheppard Sr., “At Wenonah Elementary I had my first lessons in skills like math and writing that have become so important to me in later years. At Gateway, I got my first real training in the earth sciences, chemistry, and physics -- training that I still put into use every day as we explore Mars with Spirit and Opportunity (landing vehicles).” Squyres gives his parents, Art and Felicie, ample credit for his success: “If you want proof that parents can have a profound effect on their children's successes in life, you need look no further than my mother and dad.” Four years ago Squyres was the first to be honored on the Fourth of July as a “Wenonah Legend.” Don Ralston was born in Woodbury's old Brewer Hospital, grew up in Wenonah, and graduated from Woodbury High School in 1940. Don flew 35 missions over Nazi Germany and Italy in World War II, serving as navigator on a B-17 Flying Fortress. He was Lt. Col. Ralston by the end of the war. Ralston's volunteer work with veterans' organizations is well-documented. Kathryn is a 1943 Paulsboro High School graduate who began practice teaching at her alma mater at age 19. She attended Drexel University and graduated from Glassboro State Teachers College (Rowan University) before working at Mobil Oil Corp. for 11 years. The article about Kathryn and Don is on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall for all to read. Congratulations! Kathryn and Don Ralston of Wenonah will be honored as 'Legends of Wenonah' during the Wenonah Fourth of July Parade next month. A big thank you is extended to all of you for the outpouring of love shown to me. During my recent ordeal, I received many cards. On April 27th, I was officially diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. After months of testing, it was good to finally know for sure. Since my diagnosis, I have started home treatments and have had some improvement. Did you know that the president’s father-in-law has MS? Did you know that Montel Williams has MS and that he talked about it recently on Oprah? With the public eye on MS, positive changes are in the making. Did you know that they are experimenting with an oral MS medication rather than injections? This medication is in experimental stages and might be available come January. Did you know that someone gets diagnosed with MS every hour? Did you know that one in a thousand people has MS? Again, thank you so much for all of your caring. Love, Marjory Townsend The Sunday School would like to thank George and Cheryl Peck for restoring the whale for our "Jonah" skit. George made the whale many years ago for Helen Taylor and her Junior Choir when they did the whole musical "Jonah." We found it stored on the stage and the children were so excited to see it. We are all so fortunate to have the benefit of George's perfect craftsmanship. Thank you also to the Youth Choir, Junior Choir, and the Sunday School classes for the special music they provided all year. Nancy Sellen I would like to thank the Senior, Praise, Handbell, Youth, Junior and Sunday School Choirs for providing great music for the Congregation this year. Your time is very valuable and we all appreciate your rehearsing and your performances. A big Thank You to Nancy Sellen for her time with the Youth, Junior and Sunday School Choirs. We will begin once again in September with the schedule: Sunday AM: Youth Choir, Junior Choir, Senior Choir Thank you, Bruce Yurko Thursday PM: Handbell Choir and Senior Choir June Mtg: 3rd @ 7:30 Hostess: Irene Vennell 131 Wagner Avenue Deptford 845-7261 No meeting in August. See you in September. Yours in Christ, Marjory Townsend, Moderator Summer Sunday School News Memorial Sunday School needs your help! Our congregation has always come through in the past and I m sure it will again we are in need of a Sunday School teacher for the 4th 6th Grade class to start in September, and also a person to oversee the Sunday School program (superintendent). This is the position I have been fortunate enough to have for the last 12 years, and it is with reluctance that I leave it. The possibility of making a difference in the life of a child is challenging and rewarding. Sunday School teachers volunteer and stay on for years because of this, and I ve been privileged to be a part of it all. Over the years I have had the pleasure of working with some wonderful, caring Christians in this endeavor that truly give their best shot at teaching God s Word to our young folks. Their dedication has been outstanding and I must name some names: Dorothy Schubert, Nancy Sellen, Karen Battle, Cheryl Peck, Jane Offner, Lisa Veit, Sue Ann Sole, Susan Miller, Pat Steenson, Beverly Storey, Judy Mauro, Maryanne Loughran, and Pat Hart - all have been an inspiration and an example to their students and to me as well, and I won t forget our friendships formed while working together. There are really many benefits to working in Christian Ed! Please consider filling one of the positions neither one is as time-consuming as you may think. You can contact Reverend Reed, the church office, or me, Peggy Murphy. Vacation Bible School Community VBS is on for August 3-8, 2009 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. See separate Registration form. We love it when people register early! There will be classes for ages PreSchool thru Adult. Six churches are involved this year, so get in on the shared fun! If your child would be interested in riding on the VBS float in the 4th of July Parade, please contact the church office or Peggy Murphy peggy1956@hotmail.com or 468-8032. Youth Group Updates Well, another year has come and gone. The youth group wrapped up their last session with an awesome trip to Great Adventure! The YG grew in so many ways this year. We had around 14 members and some visitors throughout the year. Brian and I felt very blessed to lead such a great group. We are amazed at the way God works in all of our lives. The MPC YG has such an extraordinary group of individuals. It's not everyday you see teens wake up early on a Sunday morning, talk about God, and pray out loud for one another. Our YG does just that and I know God has so much more planned for us. I INVITE ALL OF YOU to walk God's journey with us as we seek His path. Our basement door is always open ☺ YG will resume in September. I just want to run down how many great things the MPC YG has done this year: September-Participated in the Bradley's buddies walk October-November-Participated in Clean Communities (picked up trash at Ella Harris Park) December- Had a Gertrude Hawk fundraiser so that we could buy Christmas presents for DYFS children in the area. We also made Christmas packages for the YES facility February-Took part in the 30 hour famine to raise money for Latin America. We raised enough money to feed 8 children for a whole year!!! March- Donated more than 200 canned goods/nonperishable food (collected during famine) to the Pitman Pantry (at Pitman Presbyterian church) and also gave canned goods to MPC pantry April-Helped the Sunday School with their Easter activities May-Had our annual car wash and Hosted Mother's Day Service June- Outing to Great Adventure Some other things that happened……. Helped during Spaghetti dinner Helped serve communion every month Had "Dinner and a Movie" night Went bowling with local YG's Helped with Spring cleaning Participated in RAY projects As you can see, the MPC youth group did not waste one ounce of energy this year. We want to congratulate two students who were accepted into G.C.I.T for next yearSarah Sparks and Ryan Dongarra (Ryan also received an award for the Rube Goldberg Project). The YG would also like to extend a warm welcome to our 5 new YG members moving from Sunday School to YG (Jack Lerner, Rebecca Mauro, Sarah Braun, Olivia Kerns and Katie Black). We can't wait to meet you in September!! We want to thank all of the parents who helped with our events this year; your help meant so much to us (especially during the famine). As always, our basement door is open. Anyone in 7th-12th grade who is interested should give us a try. There is no pressure, no homework, and no lectures. We talk about God and the way He impacts our life. YG is a place where you can relax and take part in a judgmental-free environment. We love to see new faces and we love to see the "regulars." You do not have to be a member of MPC and you don't have to be Presbyterian. We welcome everyone (and we always have doughnuts to eat….that's reason enough to come). Have an awesome summer. We can't wait to see you in September!!!!!! In Christ, Alex & Brian Moore Committee June 12th, we went to a Riversharks game and there were 54 of us who took up a whole section! August 2, 2009 Church Picnic Come join us for some fellowship and fun, hopefully in the sun. The picnic will be immediately following the Church Service in the Manse backyard. The Fellowship Committee will supply the hot dogs and hamburgers. If you wish, bring a side dish, dessert, or bottled soda/water to share. Make plans to attend as this will be a great time to get to know someone in your Church family that you would not normally have time to spend with in our very busy lives. There will be badminton, croquet, water balloons, and possibly a treasure hunt. September 13, 2009 Bounce Forward Sunday This is our first 11 AM Worship Service and a luncheon immediately following the Service is planned. Bring a friend!!!
