Orientation

Our Postgraduate Orientation Program is an
essential start to your graduate studies at
Monash. The program is designed to provide
you with an introduction to the University, your
Course Director and your fellow students. You
will receive a detailed overview of the
expectations of postgraduate studies and the
services available to help you maximise your
 study experience.
We also offer our new postgraduate students
the opportunity to participate in a selection of
 short optional workshops during Orientation
Week at Caulfield campus. This workshop
series is streamed into four categories aiming
 to offer something for everyone.
 • Academic skills development
 • Personal development
 • Professional and career development
 • Library Workshops for BUSECO
The workshops are voluntary and although they
do not offer any credit towards your field of
study, they provide you the chance to help you
develop good study habits, meet other new
postgraduate students in an informal setting,
and begin to create your own networks, all
essential elements in giving you a head start
with your postgraduate studies. We also offer
a Saturday Workshop program designed for
 working and mature age students.

Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics
 Welcome
 In today’s ever-changing, fast-paced global economy, business
counts on highly skilled professionals who value-add in all areas,
but particularly in the key area of econometrics and business
 statistics.
Econometrics and business statistics professionals help
organisations to work optimally in the business environment,
providing a vital, competitive edge. They assist with a bigger
picture view – analysing and evaluating a wealth of data and
extracting the best possible information, so that managers in both
corporate and public sectors can make the best strategic business
decisions or devise the most appropriate policies.
As leaders in these vital business areas, you will find that
econometrics and business statistics will enhance your
professional career – distinguishing you and your skills in the
 business world.

 Professor Brett Inder
Head, Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics

 About us
Monash University has had a long and proud association with the
disciplines of econometrics and business statistics, dating back to
the foundation of the (then) Faculty of Economics and Politics in
1962. The foundation Dean was Professor Don Cochrane, who in
1949 published with Guy Orcutt a pair of path-breaking articles
presenting an ingenious method of estimating time series models
 – a method now known to generations of econometrics and
statistics students as the “Cochrane-Orcutt procedure”. Professor
Cochrane provided an environment in which econometrics and
business statistics flourished and in 1968 established Australia’s
first Chair in Econometrics. This led to the creation of what is now
the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics, a
department that is recognised worldwide for the quality of its
 teaching and research.
The department offers outstanding graduate coursework
programs at the Caulfield campus and also outstanding research
opportunities – at both the Caulfield and Clayton campuses – Contact details
