letter cards from page 58 (copy, mount on tagboard, and cut out), paper and pencil, Unit 9 Basic Word list Each player takes one letter u card and places it face-up in front of himself or herself. The remaining letter cards are shuffled and placed face-down on the table. 1. The first player turns over two cards and tries different combinations of the letters to form a spelling word. If the player can make a word, he or she writes it on the paper. 2. The player puts the letters back in their original position, and the second player takes a turn. 3. Players earn one point for each new word they make. The player with the highest number of points after both players have taken an equal number of turns wins.

Have children use the Unit 9 Basic Word list to check the spelling of words they write. You may choose to extend the list by adding other words to it that contain the u sound heard in umbrella (bun, tub, rub, sub, rut, and nut).
