Contract Underwriter- Sacramento

HCC Surety Group, a subsidiary of HCC Insurance Holdings, Inc. and surety
bond specialty company, seeks a FT Contract Underwriter for our Sacramento
office. We are located downtown Sacramento, on Arden Way. In our team
environment, the selected candidate will review contract bond submissions from
our branch offices and make underwriting decisions that are in line with our goals
and objectives, with an interest in protecting the company. Contract bonds will
include subdivision, SBA, specialty and traditional bonds. With a focus on
contract underwriting, will review financial statements, extend credit, control risk,
and make recommendations to senior management when outside of scope of
authority. This position also acts as a liaison to the legal, accounting and
collateral departments. Some travel required.

The ideal candidate will have surety and/or specialty underwriting experience. A
minimum of 5-10 years of work experience in an agency, banking, title/escrow,
legal or finance environment is required. B.A. or A.A. degree in business,
economics, or finance a must. Knowledge of the construction industry and
related terminology strongly desired. — Only qualified applicants, please.

Skill Requirements:
   • Advanced-level knowledge of MS Office (especially Word, Excel, internet)
       a must.
   • Excellent written and verbal communication skills essential, as position
       requires regular customer service and telephone interaction with our
       clients. Sales experience helpful.
   • Knowledge of construction industry/ terminology, contracts engineering/
       architectural specifications, trades, accounting specific to contractors,
       analyzing job costs, financial analysis, banking, economics and
       government bodies very helpful.
   • Must understand legal terminology and be able to analyze legal
   • Analytical and math skills required to accurately assess underwriting risk.
   • Strong organizational skills.
   • Professionalism and a calm manner required for handling disgruntled
       agents or branch office personnel when bonds are declined.

Job Responsibilities:
   • Underwrite contract bond submissions. Gather related facts and evaluate
     risk. Apply underwriting guidelines and analytical procedures.
   • Extensive communication to branch offices on home office procedures
     required. Will facilitate branch office and home office relations.
   • Will be expected to develop excellent business relationships with agents.
       Will conduct field audits and schedule periodic visits with significant
       agents/ contract accounts under their direction.
   •   Provide general counsel to branch offices on state filing requirements,
       review of legal documents, government codes and statute review.
   •   Perform branch audit functions.
   •   Review and resolve accounting issues.
   •   Will process collateral release requests, which includes evaluating
       outstanding liability and any premium due.
   •   Will be expected to stay current on industry trends and the competitive
   •   Attend agency marketing and industry events as needed.
   •   Other related duties as assigned.
