Immunization Theory and Practice Sunday, September 13, 2009 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Workshop Date A Certificate Program for Pharmacists COURSE GOALS KU School of Medicine Wichita Campus Santa Fe Room 1010 N. Kansas Wichita, Kansas 67214 Location This program is designed to encourage pharmacists to join other healthcare providers in eliminating vaccine-preventable diseases by raising patient awareness and immunization rates through patient education, advocacy, and vaccine administration. This program fulfills the training required for pharmacists to administer vaccines in Kansas to individuals 18 years old and older. This is a Practice-based program and consists of two parts: a Home-study portion and a day-long Workshop. I. As the name implies, the Home-study portion is completed prior to coming to the Workshop and consists of assigned reading, viewing two Internet-based presentations, and completing a self-assessment exam. The readings will come primarily from the current CDC text, Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (Pink Book). The Internet-based presentations will cover Vaccine Principles and Legal Issues Associated with Immunization. It is estimated that it will require approximately 12 hours for pharmacists to complete the Home-study portion. The Pink Book and links to the Internet presentations will be sent to you four to six weeks prior to the Workshop. A score of 70% or above is required in order to successfully complete the Home-study component and attend the Workshop. See the Computer Requirement Section regarding computer specifications for viewing the Internet presentations. II. The second part consists of a day-long live Workshop that includes classroom lectures, case work, hands-on demonstration and practice of injection technique. You will be required to demonstrate satisfactory injection technique to an instructor and score 70% or better on a final written examination conducted at the end of the Workshop in order to successfully complete the certificate program.
