STAND 4 OTHERS! Bullying Prevention Talk to a staff member immediately! Fill out a written report with a guidance counselor or teacher as soon as the incident occurs. Tell an adult at home or any trusted adult. Do NOT help or encourage the bully in any way. Follow the bullying rules at school. Participate in classroom meetings. Respect others and their differences, even if you do not agree with them. Include students in activities if you see they are unsure or left out. Be a good role model for others. Treat others how you want to be treated. WHAT IS BULLYING? A person is being bullied when he or she is exposed, REPEATEDLY and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more students. Bullying involves an imbalance of power. There are many different types of bullying. These include: What are the signs that your child is being bullied, harassed or intimidated? There are several signs that you should be aware if you suspect your child is being bullied. Signs: What are signs that your child may be bullying or harassing others? • • • • • Does not seem to understand the feelings of others Likes to be in charge Is frequently physical with others (including siblings and relatives) Often acts without thinking Puts others down • • • • • • • • • • • Direct bullying involves hitting, kicking, shoving, taunting, teasing, racial slurs, verbal sexual harassment, threatening, making faces or obscene gestures. Indirect bulling occurs when a student gets another to assault someone, lies and rumors are spread, there is deliberate exclusion from a group or activity, and social isolation. Cyber-bulling can happen on telephones, cell phones, text messages, emails, and websites (i.e. MySpace, Facebook). • Does not want to tell you what is wrong Withdrawn or depressed Physical signs such as bruises or red marks on body Damaged belongings Drop in grades Complains about being sick Needs extra money for supplies Appears anxious Isolated from others or has few close friends More irritable or moody than usual How can you respond to your child if you feel they are bullying or harassing others? • • • • • • Take your child’s behavior seriously Talk to your child to help them understand the feelings of others and how their actions can hurt Ask them if he/she are also being bullied Enroll your child in positive activities Enlist the help of a counselor Contact your school staff How can you respond? First, sit down and talk to your child and give them an opportunity to tell you what is happening. If you suspect they are being bullied, take them seriously and immediately contact the school, not to the bully or bully’s parents, to discuss what your child has told you. At home, teach your child on nonviolent ways to deal with bullies and encourage them to get involved with positive school activities. •
