                    A Message From the CEO
The last 2 months have been an exciting time of change and growth for Challenge
as we welcome and develop New Services in Bathurst and Mudgee.
The Mudgee Group Home will soon be home to a number of clients as the staff
receive their first client on Tuesday 5th of October 2010. A warm welcome to the
new staff at Mudgee Group Home from all at Challenge.
Bathurst Group Home is scheduled to open by the end of October and will be
receiving clients by mid-November. Bathurst will provide residential services to
clients ranging in ages from 18 to 55 years.
In general news, the Challenge MRF Recycling Plant recently underwent a massive
$400,000.00 upgrade and the plant had to be shut down for 5 days. The upgrade
provided essential equipment to help sort the 40 tonnes of recycling processed
everyday at the Recycling Plant.
In addition, Challenge was nominated for a number of awards at the Tamworth
Chamber of Commerce Quality Business Awards held on the 10th of September.
Challenge Recycling and Challenge Laundry Service were both nominated for an
award. Challenge was a finalist in the following categories; Health & Well Being and
Tamworth Chamber of Commerce Business Of the Year (Large).
A big congratulations to all for these nominations.
I will be travelling to Sydney on Thursday 28th October 2010 to join the ‘Show Your
Strength’ rally. The rally is hoping to ensure the ‘Stronger Together’ Initiative re-
ceives funding in the State Government for the next 5 years.
If anyone would like to travel to Sydney with me to join the rally please contact Pam
Woods on 67 631 811 and we will organise transport for you. I encourage you to
please make the effort as it essential that your presence is felt and your voice is
heard.
For more details see page 16 and 17 of this newsletter.

Hi to everyone, the weather is finally warming up and the spring bug has caught us
again. Our activities now include more outdoor trips which is wonderful.

Below are photos of the Gunnedah disco which was enjoyed by everyone, our Mother’s
Day gifts and cards which we all made and Margaret with one of her very complicated
puzzles just completed.
We went to Quirindi to the ‘Heritage Trains’ and everyone enjoyed the day out.
Special thanks to the wonderful volunteers from the trains who cooked us a lovely BBQ
and opened the museum just so we could have a look. More photos next time.

Dubbo Day Programs

Hi everybody,
Here at Dubbo Day Programs we have been participating in some new and excit-
ing programs.
On Tuesday mornings we have joined a “Zumba” dance class with other group
homes from our area. This class is a lot of fun and great exercise. All of our clients
have stated they are enjoying it and can’t wait until the next Tuesday arrives so
they can learn some new moves and get those hips shaking!!!
A local police officer was also kind enough to spend a morning with us discussing
issues we were unsure of. Some issues that were brought up by clients were; the
consequences of stealing, touching others, and what citizens rights and responsi-
bilities were in the community. After we finished talking, we were all allowed to
look at the police car and then ordered pizza for lunch.
We are now getting busy making Christmas projects to take home. We have start-
ed a woodwork group to make fishing stools, several craft groups and our ladies
group are currently making throw pillows with their names on them for their beds.
With all these activities going on, we’re certainly on our toes.
Until next time everyone, take care and enjoy Your selves,
Staff and Clients at Dubbo Day
Programs.

                                  Client Services– New England

We recently had the pleasure of promoting Challenge Disability Services at the
Annual Armidale Community Post School Support Expo. Graham Dooley and Lynda
Townsend assisted in answering questions from Carers and Students about what
services Challenge is able to provide in the New England. The Expo was also a great
opportunity to meet other service providers from across our region which is important
in terms of future collaborative projects in our area.
Client Services has commenced delivering planned respite for the Moree community.
We are hopeful that we might expand this service as we recruit more staff in Moree.
Transition to Work Program (TTW)

support his or her future work or study goals – potential TAFE or UNI.

place sampling and job. The program also provides support in areas of personal and
social development.
Young people who access this service are encouraged and supported through work
place sampling and job trials in order to gain industry knowledge to progress within
their chosen field.
ADiSS - Moree
Yarma (Hello)
My Name is Roslyn Sampson, and I manage the Aboriginal Drop In Support Service
based in Moree.

Challenge started ADiSS here in both Moree and Narrabri 2 years ago, and we now
operate at full capacity. I have a dedicated team of eight, and together we provide in
home support to men and women from the Aboriginal communities in our area with
intellectual disabilities and acquired brain injuries.

We had a visit at the beginning of September from our Senior Manager, Chris Norris
and his guest John Gilroy from the National Disability Service. Now John wanted to
talk to as many people as he could on the subjects of disabilities in general, and
Aboriginality in relation to the way our mob are provided with disability services and
employment pathways.

Once we knew they were headed our way we started planning a monster Barbecue,
and invited people from the community, other organisations like Life With Out
Barriers, Housing NSW and Aboriginal Employment Services, plus we managed to
get most of our staff, our ADiSS clients plus clients from Roy Thorne House to come
along. We were especially pleased to have six elders from our community join us on
the day. So we ended up with about 50 guests, and had a great afternoon.
Here’s a few photo’s from the day.

OH&S

             Welcome Stephen Lasscock
                  OH&S Manager– Administration
My name is Steve Lasscock and I have recently joined the Challenge Team as the
OH&S Manager – Administration. I work in the Carthage street office, though I do
get out and about to visit the sites.
I am a former Sergeant of Police, having served on the front line for twenty years
in various parts of the state. My first ten years were in western Sydney, mainly in
culturally diverse areas.
In 2000 I transferred to Broken Hill where I spent the next seven years before
transferring to Gunnedah.
I have two sons, 9 and 7 who were both born in Broken Hill. They are both very
active and I am heavily involved in their school and sporting life. I will shortly step
down as the P&F President of their school after a two year stint, but I have just
signed on as President of the Rugby League club my youngest son plays for.
I believe that I bring good old fashioned common sense to the OH&S role. I am
aware that OH&S is important to me and the people who I report to. I know work-
place safety is important to the coal face, but the associated paperwork is not.
Where I can, I will streamline the systems so I get the information I want, while
making your job easier.
I have been made to feel very welcome in this organization, and I look forward to
working with everyone to make our environment as safe a workplace as we can.

TESTIMONIAL OF MICHAEL SANDERS TIME AT GREG NORMAN DRIVE
Michael attended Greg Norman Drive for only a short time however, that time was an
enjoyable part of our time at Tamworth. Many services appear to struggle with the con-
cept of a ‘person centred’ approach to programs, yet this was never an issue for the
manager of Greg Norman Drive, Patrick Delaney. Patrick ensured Michael’s program
incorporated as much as Michael wanted to do as was possible. Michael looked forward
to going in and participating in the activities that were part of his program, as the activi-
ties were tailored to his needs and wants.
The ready smiles and encouragement that staff offered always made Michael and I feel
welcome. It is very important that parents/carers feel that their child/person is being
treated with kindness and respect, yet this is an area that is often not considered by ser-
vice providers. As a parent I always felt confident and secure in the knowledge that Mi-
chael was both enjoying his time at his programs as well as being treated as a valued
human being.
The staff and clients at Greg Norman Drive were a pleasure to be around and we wish
to thank all for the positive experience we had whilst at Greg Norman Drive. A special
thank you to Patrick for his wonderful Irish nature and natural care he displays to both
parents and client.
Warmest regards
Judy Scrivener and Michael Sanders
