INSTRUCTIONS

•   This application is for UBC Okanagan students only.
•   Students attending UBC Vancouver and other institutions should apply using the Affiliation Scholarships application
    available on the Vancouver site at www.students.ubc.ca/finance (click on Scholarships & Bursaries > Scholarships & Prizes
    > Affiliation Scholarships).
•   Completed applications must be received by Student Financial Assistance and Awards at the above address by 4:00 PM,
    May 31, 2011. Late, incomplete or faxed applications will NOT be accepted.
•   You must notify Student Financial Assistance and Awards in writing of any changes to the information you provide on this
    application.
•   This is a fillable PDF which you can complete on line and print. If you prefer to complete your application by hand, please
    print in ink and answer all questions carefully.

CRITERIA

•   Continuing post-secondary students must have been enrolled in full-time studies (i.e. registered in a minimum of 90% of a
    full course load) during the previous 2010/11 academic year. Academic year is defined as the period from September to
    April for continuing post-secondary students, and September to June for students from secondary school.
•   Students must register in a minimum of 80% of a full course load for the upcoming September to December and January to
    April academic year in order to maintain eligibility for an award.
•   A student is ineligible if their previous year’s grades are predominantly in pass/fail format (instead of percentage).
•   Unless the award description states otherwise, first priority for these awards will be given to undergraduate students.
•   Students enrolled in unclassified/qualifying programs are not eligible for these awards.
•   An eligible applicant must provide supporting documentation where indicated or your application for that award will not
    be considered.


TIMELINE

•   Completed applications (including transcripts and all supporting documentation) are due at 4:00 PM, May 31, 2011.
•   All applicants will be notified of their eligibility via letter or email before the end of August.
•   Recipients who attend UBC will have their scholarships applied directly towards their tuition. Remaining scholarship funds
    will be made available in the form of a cheque that can be picked up from Student Financial Assistance and Awards.

The following award descriptions provide the information required to complete this application. The information contained in
the descriptions is accurate at the date of publication but may be subject to change.

Please note: students from UBC Vancouver and other institutions do not apply using this application, but instead apply using
the Affiliation Scholarships application available on the Okanagan site at www.ubc.ca/okanagan/students/finance (click on
Scholarships & Bursaries > Scholarships & Prizes > Affiliation Scholarships).

Where the terms of an award require applicants to do so, please submit documentation indicating required affiliation.
Photocopies are acceptable.




04796   ASSOCIATION of Administrative and Professional Staff of UBC Scholarship
        A $4,500 scholarship is offered by the Association of Administrative and Professional Staff (AAPS) for students beginning
        or continuing studies at UBC, either at the Vancouver or the Okanagan campus. Applicants should be either children of
        AAPS members, spouses of AAPS members or AAPS members who, in the past several years, have credit courses
        equivalent to a full course load and are proceeding to a year of full-time studies. In the event that there are no qualified
        applicants in the preceding categories, the award is made to a qualified student in any program.

        No candidate may receive the scholarship for more than two years.

04707   G&F Financial Group Scholarship (formerly UNITED Savings Credit Union)
        Five scholarships of $1,000 each are offered by the G&F Financial Group to students who are beginning or continuing a
        full program of studies at any publicly funded Post Secondary Educational Institutions in British Columbia. Applicants
        must be active members or immediate family of an active member of the G&F Financial Group. The scholarship is
        awarded to the candidate who, in the opinion of the University, in consultation with the Financial Group, is best
        qualified in terms of academic merit and financial need. Where possible, one scholarship is offered to a student
        attending one of the Universities and a second, to a student attending BCIT or a college.

00524   Guenther Felix SANDERS Scholarship
        Scholarships totalling $1200 have been endowed through a bequest from Guenther Felix Sanders for students at the
        University of British Columbia Vancouver and the University of British Columbia Okanagan who are affiliated with the
        Knights of Pythias in British Columbia and are, preferably, honouring or majoring in mathematics or applied science.
        Basis of selection is academic standing, but financial need may be a factor. Awards are made on the recommendation
        of the University, in consultation with the Grand Lodge, Knights of Pythias, whose approval is necessary and who are
        empowered to determine from time to time the amounts and conditions of these awards.

        **A letter of recommendation from the Grand Lodge, Knights of Pythias must be submitted with the application.

04718   ILWU Harry Bridges Entrance Scholarship
        Four scholarships of $1,500 each are offered to active members, dependents and sons and daughters of members, in
        good standing, of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. They will normally be awarded to the candidates
        who are proceeding in the fall to a full first year program of studies at the University of British Columbia, University of
        Victoria, Simon Fraser University, the BC Institute of Technology, or a college in BC. The donors reserve the right to
        withhold awards if the academic standing of candidates is not sufficiently high, or to re-award the scholarships if
        winners receive other scholarships of substantial value.

        **A letter from the ILWU confirming “good standing” must be submitted with your application

00530   ILWU Harry Bridges Undergraduate Scholarship
        Three scholarships of $1,500 each are offered to active members, dependents and sons and daughters of members, in
        good standing, of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. They are open to students in attendance at the
        University of BC, the University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University, the BC Institute of Technology, or any college in BC
        who will continue in a full program of studies in the next session in an undergraduate faculty. These scholarships will
        normally be awarded to the candidates with highest standing as determined by the results of the Final Sessional
        Examinations conducted in April by the named institutions. The donors reserve the right to withhold awards if the
        academic standing of candidates is not sufficiently high or to re-award scholarships if winners receive other scholarships
        of substantial value.

        **A letter from the ILWU confirming “good standing” must be submitted with your application.

04804   ILWU Local 517 Bud Smith Scholarship
        A $225 scholarship has been endowed by Local 517 of the ILWU in memory of its former secretary, “Bud” Smith. The
        scholarship is open to members in good standing of Local 517, and their sons and daughters. Candidates may attend
        the University of BC, the University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University, the BC Institute of Technology or any college in
        BC and must enrol in a full program of undergraduate studies. The donor reserves the right to re-award the scholarship
        if the winner receives other scholarships of substantial value.

        **A letter from the ILWU confirming “good standing” of Local 517 must be submitted with your application.

00666   ILWU Canada Bert Johnson Scholarship
        A $1,000 scholarship is provided by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union in memory of Ralph Scruton,
        local 506 and Bert Johnson, local 500. It is available to active members of the union in good standing, dependents and
        their sons and daughters. Candidates may attend the University of BC, the University of Victoria, Simon Fraser
        University, the BC Institute of Technology or any college in BC and must enrol in a full program of studies. The donor
        reserves the right to re-award the scholarship if the winner receives other scholarships of substantial value.

        **A letter from the ILWU confirming “good standing” must be submitted with your application.

00558   ILWU Thomas P. Mayes Scholarship
        In memory of Thomas P. Mayes, who until his death in 1968, served as secretary of the Union, the International
        Longshore and Warehouse Union offers an undergraduate scholarship of $1,500 to active members, dependents and
        sons and daughters of members, in good standing. The terms and conditions of the award are the same as for the three
        International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union Scholarships, described above.

00544   Nancy RYCKMAN Scholarship
        Scholarships totalling $900, endowed through a bequest from Nancy E. Ryckman, are awarded to students who have
        completed at least one year at a university or college and who attended school in the East Kootenays for three years, of
        which two years must have been immediately prior to entrance to the University or College. It is the expressed wish of
        the donor that the scholarships be awarded to young men or women who require aid in obtaining a university
        education and that, in making the awards, consideration be given to character and intellectual promise.

04731   PIPING Industry Journeyman Training and Industry Promotion Fund Scholarship
        Two scholarships of $1,000 each, provided by the Trustee Board of the Journeyman Training and Industry Promotion
        Fund, are offered to students entering the first year at any British Columbia university or college, and proceeding to a
        full program of studies leading to a university degree or college diploma in any field.
        To be eligible a candidate must be: (a) the son, daughter or legal dependant of a member of the United Association of
        Plumbers and Steamfitters, Local 170, who is employed by a firm which is a contributor to the Fund, or (b) the son,
        daughter or legal dependant of an employee of a firm which is a contributor to the Fund.

        Normally, one $1,000 award is made to category (a) and one to category (b). These awards are based exclusively on
        academic achievement. Any student who is an eligible candidate as described above and who is eligible to enter a
        British Columbia university or college is a potential candidate for these awards. The trustees reserve the right to
        withhold an award if candidates do not obtain sufficiently high standing or if they receive other major awards.

        **A letter from the Association must be submitted with the application.

04779   RETAIL Wholesale Union, Local 517, Scholarship
        A scholarship of $500 is offered to dependants or legal wards of members of Local 517. It is offered to an
        undergraduate student at any accredited publicly funded post-secondary educational institution in British Columbia, in
        a full program leading to a degree or diploma. In the selection of the winner the basic factor is the academic standing
        of the applicant. Should there be a tie the financial need of the applicant and his or her family shall be the deciding
        factor. The winner is selected in consultation with the Union.

        **A letter from the Union must be submitted with the application.

04798   UNITED Association of Plumbers and Steamfitters, Local 170, Scholarship
        Two scholarships of $1,500 each are provided by the United Association of Plumbers & Steamfitters, Local 170, to
        students entering first year at any public university in British Columbia, and proceeding to a degree in any field. To be
        eligible, a candidate must be the son, daughter or legal dependent of a member in good standing of the United
        Association of Plumbers & Steamfitters, Local 170. The Union reserves the right to withhold an award if candidates do
        not obtain sufficiently high standing or if they receive other major awards.

        **A letter from the Local confirming “good standing” must be submitted with the application.

04786   William L. HURFORD Memorial Scholarship
        A scholarship of $1,000, offered in memory of William L. Hurford by the BC Maritime Employers Association, is open to
        sons and daughters of members, in good standing, of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. The
        scholarship is awarded to a candidate who is proceeding in the fall to a full first year program of studies at the
        University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University, the BC Institute of Technology, or a
        college in British Columbia. Students may not hold more than one scholarship offered by the International Longshore
        and Warehouse Union at any one time.
