           Database-types
• A field contains the
  individual items of
  data which make up
  each record.
• A record contains a
  collection of fields
  that relate to the
  same person, product
  or item stored in the
  database.
• A file contains any
  number of records
  which make up the
  total database
Relationships-File,Record,Field

• In a school:
  Information about the
  class is kept in a file,
  information about a
  student in the class is
  kept in a record, &
  individual information
  about the student is
  kept in a field.
     Health service records

• Databases are also
  used for Health
  service records which
  store information
  about every individual
  from the moment they
  are born.
 What is a coding system
and what are the benefits?
 A coding system is
  made up of different
  characters that
  represent text and
  information in a file or
  stream of information.
 The benefits are:
  quicker entry of data;
  less data has to be
  keyed in; & there is
  less chance of error
  when keying in data.
  A coding system and the
       disadvantages
 Disadvantages include:
  errors while typing in
  the data; data cannot
  always be produced in
  a certain format; &
  people might not
  understand some of
  the abbreviations
  used.
      Customer loyalty cards
• Customer loyalty cards reward
  the customer by allowing them
  to collect points or receive a
  discount when they purchase
  items from the same retailer or
  supplier. For example: Boots
  Advantage Card.
• The advantages to firms include
  the development of a regular
  customer base; the ability to
  collect information on
  customers by computer,
  frequency of purchases. outlets
  used etc.
