I have added a number of new courses such as corset making, pattern drafting courses and software training for Brother’s PE-Design Lite. I hope these courses will expand both your sewing skills and pattern drafting skills. If you have PE-Design Lite software, here is your opportunity to gain the most from your embroidery machines. For those who don’t know me, I have a H.N.D in Clothing Studies and wide experience in design; pattern drafting and all aspects of sewing. I am able to offer a choice of courses to suit all abilities. In order for my customers to gain maximum benefit from the courses, they are focused on small groups of four people in a relaxed atmosphere. Courses run from 10.00 to 16.00 and vary between one and two day courses. Sewing machines are provided unless booking on an overlocker course or machine embroidery courses where you will need to bring your own machine. Tea and coffee are provided, but you will need to bring a packed lunch with you. My venue is the Sewing Studio at D.C. Nutt Sewing Machines. Perhaps you are returning to sewing after a long break and feel that your sewing skills are a little rusty? On this course you will learn about pressing and under pressing, preparing your fabrics for sewing, interfacings and machine stitching tips. You will also be taught basic seam construction techniques, basic dart construction and how to insert a lapped zip. You will make half scale skirt sample using the above skills. Brilliant day, lots of skills will be learnt. Course Cost: £69.00 Material Cost: £5.00 (Sewing level – Suitable for all levels) One Day course Dates: Friday 6 February, Friday 19 June and Thursday 26 November This is a brilliant day’s course which will benefit sewers of all abilities. The great couture houses use interlinings and interfacings to magnificent effect; you can learn some of these techniques. You will gain an in-depth knowledge of: fabrics, linings, interlinings and interfacings. You will be shown the different types of woven interfacings that are available, where and how to use them: to prevent creasing and stretching and much more. Stocked up with beautiful fabrics? Not sure what type of garment to make with them? Help is at hand. This is a great day to gain a lot of general sewing knowledge and it will give you confidence in all your sewing projects. You will also be taught basic pressing techniques which is a must for all sewing projects. Course Cost: £69.00 Material Cost: £5.00 Basic Sewing Techniques - Part 2 (Sewing level – Beginners/Intermediate) One Day course Dates: Thursday 19 March and Thursday 25 June On this day you will be given tips on cutting out and sewing with fine fabrics. You will make up half a blouse (using fine fabric), which will involve pressing and sewing techniques for dart construction. You will be shown how to attach a mandarin collar (no more puckers at the front edge), sleeve openings and an easy way of setting in a sleeve. Tips will also be given on stabilising necklines and making rolled hems. Course Cost: £69.00 Material Cost: £10.00 Basic Understanding of Commercial Patterns (Sewing level - Beginners) One Day course Dates: Thursday Friday 20 March and Friday 13 November. Are you new to sewing and not sure what all the symbols mean on a paper pattern and how to lay and cut a pattern out? This course is aimed at the newcomer to sewing, you will be taught how to read all the information provided on the pattern envelope and then you will be shown what all the symbols on the pattern mean. You will then lay out the pattern pieces, cut them out in calico and then you will have a test garment ready for you to sew at home. Bring your own simple skirt pattern with you for this course. Course Cost: £69.00 Material Cost: £5.00 and you will need to bring a simple skirt pattern with you. Version 1.0 3 Version 1.0 4 Basic Overlocker Techniques – Part 1 (Sewing level – Beginners/Intermediate) One Day course Dates: Thursday 5 February, Thursday 2 April, Friday 18 September and Thursday 26 November Sewing with Knits – A Basic understanding (Sewing level – Beginners) One Day course Dates: Thursday 12 February and Thursday 2 July This one day course will help you sew knits with confidence. You will be shown the difference between knits and woven fabrics and then the different types of knits will be discussed. The selection of patterns and the use of the stretch gauge on the pattern will be discussed. Advice on the correct choice of interfacing, sewing seams, hems, edges and waistbands will be given and samples will made. You will be shown how to stabilise necklines, zip and shoulder areas using stay tapes and interfacing. This course will give you the foundations for sewing knits successfully. Course Cost: £69.00 Material costs: £10.00 Not sure how to use your over locker? If so this is the course for you. Bring your own overlocker and you will begin with the basics, threading up and tension adjusting. Cutting widths and differential feed will be explained and samples of various stitches will be completed. Rolled and fishnet hems will also be covered. This is a great day to learn all about your overlocker. Please see note at bottom of page regarding overlockers. Course Cost: Material costs: £69.00 £5.00 Basic Overlocker Techniques – Part 2 (Sewing level Intermediate) One Day course Dates: Thursday 5 March and Friday 13 November Bring your own overlocker and you will learn to make the most of your machine. In the morning you will make up half a sample child’s fleece (the remaining half can be finished at home). This will involve inserting a sleeve flat, attaching a neckband and finishing the hem. Most of the construction will be carried out using your overlocker. In the afternoon you will be shown how make lettuce leaf hems, how to prevent ragged edges and how to attach elastic using your overlocker. Finally a demonstration will be given of how to use the piping, beading and blind hem feet. This course will really develop your overlocking skills. Please see note at bottom of page regarding overlockers. Course Cost: £69.00 Material costs: £10.00 Note: All overlockers must be in working order. If for any reason there is a problem with your overlocker on the day, all efforts will be made to provide a replacement overlocker, however this cannot be guaranteed. DC Nutt Sewing Machines will not be able to do on the spot repairs. Version 1.0 Zips (Sewing level – Beginners/Intermediate) One Day course Dates: Friday 23 January, Thursday 18 June and Friday 27 November If you have problems inserting zips, come along to this course where you will be taught how to put in the following types of zips: lapped, concealed, fly front and exposed (the latter is used where there is no seam). You will be shown how to mark the fabric to ensure correct zip placement and you will spend the day putting in all four types of zips with help at hand. You will also be talked through the various types of zips that are available and their uses. Course Cost: £69.00 Material costs: £10.00 5 Version 1.0 6 Speed Tailoring (Sewing level – all) Two Day course Dates: Thursday/Friday 12/13 March and Thursday/Friday 24/25 September Machine Accessories & Stitches (Sewing level – beginners/Intermediate) One Day course Dates: Friday 6 March and Thursday 17 September Most modern machines have a huge choice of stitches and are supplied with various feet; however the majority of sewers use only a small percentage of these. Have you ever wondered what foot to use, what needle to use or even just what stitch to select? Then this course is aimed at you. You will learn what the various feet and stitches are used for and the correct needle selection (including twin and wing needles). You will go home with a portfolio of samples for future reference. No excuses after this course! Course Cost: £69.00 Material costs: £5.00 Would you like to make your own professional jacket? Tailoring does not have to be too time consuming and difficult. You will make up half a jacket, which you will take away with you, along with course notes. During the course you will be taught how to use fusible interfacings, fabric preparation, how to perfect a notched collar, the plastron and setting in sleeves. Advice on pressing will be given and you will be shown how to adapt the collar and lapel for the roll of the cloth. Course Cost: £138.00 Material costs: £15.00 Professional Pockets (Sewing level – all) One Day course Dates: Thursday 30 April and Friday 27 November If you are concerned that your pockets do not have a professional finish, join me on the above course. Learn how to obtain professionally constructed double welt, single welt pockets. Construct a patch pockets the couture way and then you will be shown how insert a zip into a double welt pocket! Finally advice will be given on machine buttonholes and bound buttonholes. This is a great course to do in conjunction with the ‘Speed Tailoring’ course. Course Cost: £69.00 Material costs: £10.00 Customising a Commercial Blouse Pattern - 2 Day Course (Sewing level – Intermediate/Advanced) Two day course. Dates: Thursday/Friday 26/27 February, Thursday/Friday 23/24 April and Thursday/Friday 22/23 October On day one of the course you will analyze a commercial blouse pattern. This will involve: comparing a commercial pattern and your actual body measurements to assess what alterations are necessary to obtain a good fit. You will be shown how to make adjustments to suit your figure type and then tissue fit a pattern. A toile (test garment) will be made and fitted, and then you will be shown how to make the final pattern alterations. This course is a must for all of you who have made a fantastic blouse only to be disappointed by the fit! There will be work to be done at home on the evening of day one. The fitting skills you will gain on this course will of benefit when/if a fitting a jacket. Course Cost: £138.00 Material costs: £15.00 for pattern and toiling fabric. Version 1.0 7 Version 1.0 8 Customising a Commercial Dress Pattern - 2 Day Course (Sewing level – Intermediate/Advanced) Two day course Dates: Thursday/Friday 14/15 May and Thursday/Friday 3/4 December Have you always wanted that perfect little black dress, if so this is the course for you? You will have the choice of making a shift dress or a wrap over dress suitable for knitted fabrics. You will be advised on the pattern choice, details of which will be given when you book on the course. On day one of the course you will analyze a commercial pattern. This will involve: comparing a commercial pattern and your actual body measurements to assess what alterations are necessary to obtain a good fit. You will be shown how to make adjustments to suit your figure type and then tissue fit a pattern. A toile (test garment) will be made and fitted, and then you will be shown how to make the final pattern alterations. This course is a must for all of you who have made a fantastic dress only to be disappointed by the fit! There will be work to be done at home on the evening of day one. Course Cost: £138.00 Material costs: You will need to purchase the respective pattern and the appropriate toiling fabric. For the wrap dress, the toiling fabric will need to be jersey fabric with moderate stretch. For the shift dress medium weight calico is suitable. If you prefer, these items can be purchased for you and you can pay for them on the day Collars, Sleeves and Cuffs One day course Dates: Friday 17 July Do you have a blouse or jacket pattern that is a really good fit but you would like to be able to change the neckline or the sleevehead? During this day you will be shown how to change the neckline including a mandarin collar and a ‘V’ neckline with facing. It should be noted that you will be shown how to carry out these amendments on a standard size pattern and notes will be provided. You will then need to make the alterations to your own pattern at home. This course is a good course to do in conjunction with ‘Customising a Commercial blouse/dress pattern’ course. Course Cost: £69.00 Material costs: All included Make a Pattern of Your Favourite Trousers Two day course Date: Thursday/Friday 11/12 June and Thursday/Friday 19/20 Nov You will make a paper pattern and toile (test garment) of your favourite trousers. The toile will be fitted and you will be shown how to make adjustments to your pattern. Note: there will be some work to do at home on the evening of day one. Please note that the trousers which you bring must fit well but small fitting adjustments will be able to be made at the toiling/fitting stage. Course Cost: £138.00 Material costs: £10.00 Version 1.0 9 Version 1.0 10 Bridal/Special Occasion Wear (Sewing level – Intermediate/Advanced) Boned Bodice Two Day Course Dates: Thursday/Friday 7/8 May and Thursday/Friday 5/6 November On this two day course you will learn how to construct a boned bodice using various interlinings. This way of constructing a bodice enables you to make alterations to the garment at the final fitting stage if necessary. Advice will be given on the types of boning and interlinings to use. You will be shown how to attach piping and insert a waist stay (the inclusion of a waist stay makes a bodice very comfortable and secure to wear). No more hitching your bodices up! You will also insert an open ended zip and completely line the bodice. Course Cost: £138.00 Material Cost: £20.00 Skirt, Train and Veils One Day Course Dates: Friday 1 May and Friday 3 July This is a great day for sewers in the bridal wear industry or those who have a special gown to make. Learn how to interline with net and make bows using netting that keep their shape. You will be shown how to attach false hems, use horse hair braid and gathering techniques. Learn how to interline a train and use stay tapes to keep the train in place. Details of how to bustle a train will also discussed and you will produce edging samples for veils. Course Cost: £69.00 Material costs: £15.00 Corsets Two Day Course Dates: Thursday/Friday 9/10 July, Thursday/Friday 1/2 October and Thursday/Friday 10/11 December Corsets have come a long way from Victorian undergarments. Today these are fashionable outer garments in their own right, used by many designers to create fabulous wedding & evening gowns. On this two day course you will learn how to construct a basic unlined corset utilising waist stays and boning techniques. A demonstration on how to cover your corset in fabric will also be provided. Corset pattern, fabric and all necessary boning will be provided. Please see separate material cost. Course Cost: £138.00 Material costs: Approx. £45.00 Version 1.0 11 Version 1.0 12 Pattern Drafting Courses (Intermediate/Advanced) Drafting your own Blocks Have you ever wanted to draft your own patterns? Well here is your opportunity to draft a block from your own measurements: Brother software Courses PE – Design Lite One day course Dates: Friday 27 March, Friday 26 June, Thursday 16 July and Thursday 12 November. This course is designed for those of you who purchased the above software and would either like to get to grips with it, or find out exactly what you can get with the package. You will learn how to auto digitise, use the 35 built in fonts and combine them with other ready made designs, change the sewing colour order and more. This course will enable you to utilise your embroidery machine and have lots of fun! Please bring your laptop computer, embroidery machine and either a memory stick or memory card. You will also need to bring embroidery threads, stabilisers and a couple of metres of medium weight calico. Cost: £69.00 per person Material costs: If you wish, stabilisers and calico can be purchased on the day, price as used. Dress and Sleeve Block – two day course Two day Course Date: Thursday/Friday 8/9 October On this two day course you will draft the basic dress block using your own measurements, then you will be shown how to trace off the block. You will also draft a sleeve block to fit the dress. The final part of the course will be making up a toile (test garment) of your garment to check the fit and to ensure that the darts, seam lines etc are positioned correctly. By completing this course you are building up your portfolio of blocks, and you can draft your own pattern to get the ‘perfect fitting little black dress.’ • NB: You will need to purchase specialist pattern drafting equipment and books. Advice will be given at time of booking. PE Design Cost: £138.00 Material costs: Pattern drafting paper and calico. These items can be purchased on the day or you can bring your own.
