THE DIRECTOR’S CHAIR
It’s March and if you’re a biker (and you probably are if you’re reading this), then your
thoughts are turning away from the day-to-day grind and toward Bike Week in
Daytona Beach. A tradition since January 1937 – marked by the inaugural running of the Daytona 200 –
Bike Week has become a 10-day festival that takes place March 4th – March 13th throughout Daytona
Beach and the surrounding counties.
To those in the frozen north, Bike Week is the opportunity waited for all winter when the motorcycles are
finally uncovered after months of laying dormant, cleaned and polished and then taken out of the garage
in the anticipation of the trek to Daytona, sunny skies, warm temperatures, short sleeves, and perhaps
even a walk on a beach. But to us here in Jacksonville, this pilgrimage to Daytona, which is made by
hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts, is taken for granted just a bit. We go to Daytona on a
lunch ride and those sunny skies, warmer temperatures, shorter sleeves and walks on the beach are part
of our daily routine, even in January.
This 64th Bike Week will have a different flavor for everyone and will offer everything from top-name
entertainment to a relaxing day at the beach to Cole Slaw wrestling. Some of us will position ourselves
along Main Street to watch the bikes and the people go by with hopes of catching that glimpse of the
“unusual”. There’s shopping the thousand of vendors for everything imaginable, the late nightclubs, the
great restaurants and a ride through the Ormond Loop, which just can’t be beat. The list goes on and on.
If there is something you’d like to see or do, you can rest assured you can see it and do it at Bike Week.
Don’t forget to get over to the Ocean Center to pick up your free H.O.G. event pin between March 7th and
March 12th and mark your calendars for March 12th when JAXHOG will have our traditional Bike Week
Dinner at Martin’s in Flagler Beach. R.S.V.P. for the Club dinner to Mike Gilbo at: Activities@jaxhog.com.
Please be alert and safe and remember that motorcycles and alcohol don’t mix…ever. Be courteous to
those who will be taking part in the festivities along side us and remember that most of them come from
somewhere else and while Daytona may be a regular ride destination for us, it’s a long-awaited vacation
for them.
Have a great Bike Week 2005! Regards, Barry
CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
Submitted by Hugh Cater
Easter is here again. What does it mean to you? We celebrate it with a holiday. We give and receive
baskets of eggs, bunnies and baby chicks, made out of candy and, if we are lucky, chocolate.
We also celebrate with new clothes. Easter is the time for the new spring wardrobe to be unveiled and
modeled. The drab winter outfit is exchanged for bright, exciting outfits. Of course in Florida we do not
have to put away heavy winter clothes and our colors stay bright all year, but it’s still a good excuse for
new clothes. For some it is also an excuse for a new Harley, but, hey, who needs an excuse for a new
bike.
It’s also the time when we see new growth all around us. Grass, trees and shrubs are turning green and
flowers aren’t far behind. We enjoy the sights, sounds and fragrances that come with new growth. It’s
also a new riding season. Daytona is just behind us and a new season of good riding is beginning. New
roads are for riding and new friends are to be made.
Easter, for followers of Jesus, is also the celebration of the resurrection of Christ; it is the opportunity for a
new commitment to faith. It is the ultimate celebration of life, especially new life, as shown by all those
other “new” traditions.
Easter is also the opportunity to share. Jaxhog traditionally takes Easter baskets to hospitalized children.
This year we are going to both Wolfson’s and Shands children’s wings. Adamec H-D has also donated
some really nice items. The ride is scheduled for Saturday, March 26, with kickstands up at 10:00 AM at
Adamec H-D Orange Park. We will be dividing into two groups and meeting later for lunch. The kids will
get the candy and you will get the blessing of helping others in need. Hope to see you there.
God bless you, Hugh Cater

RED LIGHTS… KEEP YOUR GUARD UP!
Submitted by Jim Cox
How many times do you pull up to a red light and put your bike in neutral? Maybe adjust your
helmet, gloves, or talk to the rider beside you?
An email from Danny Boy reminded me how dangerous sitting a red light can be. The web link is:
www.farson.com/image/bikestop.gif In the video it shows a biker sitting still at a red light. All of a
sudden a truck that doesn’t see the light, comes flying up to the biker from behind. The driver sees
the biker too late and plows into him from the rear. This sends the bikers flying and destroys the
bike.
I was riding with some club members near Fernandina Beach when the same thing happened. But
we saw the driver coming and looked for a way out. He saw us and swerved around traffic to avoid
a collision. Needless to say, it was a heart starting (or stopping) experience.
When at a red light, be vigilant. Not only do people run red lights in front of you but watch your
back. Remember, you’re smaller and present less of a profile than a regular vehicle. Stay in gear if
possible. Adjust quickly and stay alert. Even if a car is already behind you, an impact to them may
push them into you.
Our personal safety is in our hands. There are many things we can’t control but being alert and
ready is something we all must do. Ride often and ride safely.

RIDE FOR SMILES A ROARING SUCCESS
Contributed by Beth Broyles Media Specialist
UF & Shands Jacksonville
For over a decade, Barry Steinberg, MD, DDS, Chief of Division of Maxillofacial surgery, University of Florida has
put his heart and soul into an organization he founded called Facing Futures. And now, he’s even putting his
pedal to the metal. On Saturday, February 12, more than three hundred fifty local motorcycle riders came out to
support the surgeon and his efforts to help children with facial deformities.
“The response to the ride has been overwhelming,” says Steinberg. “When I was in high school, I would throw
parties and no one would show up. I’m deeply moved by the hundreds that came to support the foundation and
give towards our mission to change lives.”
Every spring, Facing Futures takes a trip to Vietnam to perform surgeries on children that in some cases have
become outcasts in their own communities. Steinberg and his medical team touch ground ready to do their work
of giving these young lives hope for a future.
Facing Futures also reaches out to children right here in their own backyard. Many patients are local and can visit
Steinberg at his clinic located at Shands Jacksonville. Other patients are flown from around the world for an
opportunity to seek help from this talented medical team.
Steinberg and his staff donate their time and services to the organization. But there are many other costs
involved. From travel to equipment costs, it can become an expensive undertaking. Thankfully, the Ride For
Smiles motorcycle ride helped them reach their goal.
“The monetary gifts received from the ride will help us continue what began more than 10 years ago, which is to
provide hope to every child with a facial deformity. If we can help them, we will.”
SURVIVING ROAD RAGE
Submitted by Tim Asterman
You have no idea what you've done, but a driver is trying to run you off the road.
What To Do: Experts agree that the worse thing you can do is stop. Instead, keep moving with traffic, stay cool and don't
respond to the provocation.
Accelerating may just lead to a high-speed chase. Instead, take the next exit ramp, or turn onto a cross street. If the driver
follows, go someplace where there are people, like a restaurant or gas station. If you know the area, ride directly to a police
station.

ICICLE RIDE
Submitted by Roxanne Asterman
The Icicle Ride left Adamec H-D Orange Park at 9:30 AM, Saturday the 29th of January. Only 6 bikes and a chase vehicle
braved the weather. As we departed the weather looked threatening (cold and rainy), but we all decided to go for it anyway.
We headed south to St Augustine then over to route 13 and down along the river. Even with the cold it was still a beautiful
ride along the river. We broke out into the farming area and cut across the county, took a short coffee break and warmed up,
then to A1A and rode along the beach for a short distance. There were even a few people crazier than us who were in the
water playing in the surf. They must have been from “up north “. Leaving the beach we headed west back to Bunnell and
another break. By this time it was warming up and everyone started taking off some of the layers. From Bunnell we shot
over to Palatka via Hwy100 and up to Corky Bells, totaling about 140 miles of riding. Everyone was ready to chow down on
some great seafood. No one was disappointed because the food was great and the staff that served us was even better.
Upon arriving at Corky Bells we had a contest to see who had worn the most layers of clothing on the ride. Since there were
only 6 of us riding and 3 already knew about the contest. Larry Taylor, Denise Lankford and Rick Kirtley were the winners
and prizes were awarded. We won’t go into all the layers and what they consisted of. That would take another page. Let’s
just say there were many different layers!!
Everyone had a great ride and a great meal then off to Jax and home. The weather was predicted to be cold and rainy. It
was cool, but not a drop a rain fell. You can’t always believe the weather forecast, so next time come on out and enjoy the
ride and the company. Live to ride, ride to live…Be safe.

HOG-BUCKS – EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW
What are HOG-Bucks? How do I earn them? What are they used for?
HOG-Bucks are rewards for attending club events, activities and monthly chapter meetings. HOG-Bucks are
also incentives to wear and display your Jax HOG colors.
To earn HOG-Buck credits members must legibly sign the attendance roster at Jax HOG activities and
events. HOG-Bucks are awarded as follows:
One credit for attending a monthly chapter meeting
One credit for wearing chapter colors (i.e. patches, pins or name tags)
One credit for attending/participating in an activity/event
(Note: 1 Credit = 5 HOG-Bucks)
The Activities Officer tracks HOG-Buck credits and forwards a monthly report to the Treasurer for review. A
monthly report is also posted on the Hog Bulletin Board at each chapter meeting for the membership to
view and verify what credits were earned the previous month.
JAXHOG Chapter # 0681 March 2005
Jacksonville, Florida Page: 10
All HOG-Buck credits earned throughout the year are banked. Vouchers will be distributed in December to
those members who attend the annual Holiday party for participation in the auction. HOG-Buck credits do
not represent legal tender and are non-transferable.
Cashiers will be assigned during the auction. The cashiers will monitor the bidding process and complete
the transaction. Once the bidding on any item has ended, the winner will present their HOG-Buck voucher
to a cashier. The cashier will tabulate remaining credits on the voucher and if credits remain, will return
the voucher to the member for additional bidding. If there are no credits remaining, the cashier will collect
the voucher and that member’s auction participation will end.
