There is tremendous value in being able to share experiences with others who understand. TWCP support groups include people with all types of cancer, and they focus on managing the change and uncertainty of cancer and living life fully. Each group is a committed group that meets weekly at the same time and is facilitated by a licensed professional. Information shared is always confidential. We ask everyone considering a support group to attend a Newcomer Orientation to learn more about groups and the process of joining a group. Please call for information. The Wellness Community recognizes cancer as an illness that impacts an entire family. Our programs for people with cancer are also open to those who provide emotional support and physical care. Family and Friends groups offer an opportunity to meet with others to learn how to help a loved one with cancer and to manage the stress of caregiving. No RSVP needed. Members share the common interest of cultivating or maintaining creativity in their life, which for many is an effective practice to manage the stress of cancer. Support persons welcome. Transforming Your Cancer Experience into Crea ve Wri ng Wednesdays, July 8, 15, 22 - 1:30 - 3:30 PM Many studies have proven that expressive writing is healing -- psychologically, physiologically, and spiritually. In this 3-part hands-on creative-writing workshop you will have the opportunity to try a few creative-writing exercises and if you wish, to share your writing. No writing experience or expertise is necessary. Janet Falon, M.L.A., award-winning writer and writing teacher will lead the workshop. RSVP by July 6. RSVP by July 15. Palliative care is an approach that is intended to improve the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness. David M. Mintzer, M.D., Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, and Chief, Section of HematologyOncology, Pennsylvania Hospital, will provide information about palliative care, what it means, how it differs from hospice care, how to know when palliative care is indicated, and how to discuss these options with your physician. Linda Jacobs, Ph.D., C.R.N.P., the nurse coordinator of the Living Well After Cancer program at the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center, presents this important program for people who have finished cancer treatment. She will address the medical and personal concerns of long-term cancer survivors: long-term side effects of cancer treatment, sexuality issues, family dynamics, coping with the fear of recurrence, employment issues, etc. RSVP by August 17. This workshop is designed to support and strengthen couples who are dealing with the stress of cancer. Couples will learn skills in problemsolving, communication, maintaining intimacy, and in nurturing one another.
