Proposals Update
Several exciting proposals have been passed in SGA the past few weeks. One suggests a sort of campus-beautifying initiative, especially in spaces that don’t belong to specific dorms (Main Street, etc.). The two primary suggestions are rotating installments of historical images of the College (of the construction of certain buildings, for example) and student-painted murals. Another proposal looks to rename and repurpose Gender and Women’s Studies (GWS) as the Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies (GWSS) and create a minor or focus in queer studies. This would create a home for a myriad of relevant courses that already exist in addition to opening paths for new ones. Finally, a proposal to create a formal system for students to register complaints about interactions with Campus Safety and to integrate Safety in to the Office of Student Life was discussed fairly extensively and passed this past Thursday. Feel free to track down your Senator and ask follow-up questions if you have any.
Diversity Summit this Saturday
This Saturday, May 3, from 9am to noon, SGA is hosting the 4th annual Diversity Summit. This year’s theme is “A Clear Reflection into the CC bubble.” Many of the discussion topics will center on what we can do as individuals to effect change on this campus and society at large. Dr. Terry Curry-Avery, a local psychologist, will be facilitating the summit and leading a workshop that closely ties into the theme of the summit. A light breakfast and a full lunch will be provided. Even if you miss the summit, talk to people who went. The best way to address this issue is by making it an issue rather than pretending it doesn’t exist.
Amnesty Policy
“No student seeking medical attention (either for oneself or another) for an alcohol or other drugrelated overdose or for a sexual assault will be subject to the College's judicial process for a violation of using or possessing alcohol or other drugs.” That’s straight from the Student Handbook. We just thought you should know.
Raffle-alia-alia-alia
SAC hopes that you have enjoyed the many different events this semester and wishes everyone an enjoyable spring break. Next week, SAC will be hosting RAFFLE-ALIA, a fundraising initiative to help pay for events over the semester like off-campus trips, dances, and Floralia. SAC encourages everyone to participate: you can win prizes like Ski Tickets, a Floralia Fan Pack, and even a "Pay My Parking Ticket" Prize! Visit sac.conncoll.edu for more info and rules.
What’s all the Ruckus?
As some of you have probably heard, legal music downloading service Ruckus is now free and available to all undergraduates in the US, and that, of course, includes Conn students. With a 2.5 million track library, it has an impressively broad collection (iTunes has 3.5 million tracks, by comparison). Speaking of iTunes, iPod and iTunes users who want to use Ruckus but don’t want separate music libraries would be well served to Google FU4WM.
Amy Goodman at Conn.
Amy Goodman—one of the hosts of the very popular TV/radio show Democracy Now!—will be on campus Wednesday, March 7 from 7:00 to 9:00 in the 1962 Room in Cro. She will be speaking on independent media and war and peace. In addition, she will be available for a book-signing after the event. This event is co-sponsored by SGA.
Airline changes logo for idiots
Brussels Airlines unveiled a new logo—a stylized B made up of 13 red dots—this week, and in response, received a flood of letters of complaint from superstitious customers in the US and Italy. A spokesperson said that they were expecting some displeasure, but the outpouring was so extreme they’re redoing the logo with a 14th dot.
There is a new SGA on the Can policy. If you find a typo (I have to agree it’s a typo) and get in contact with me, I will buy you a beer (uh…or soda). Yes, that is a challenge. If you find one, write to sga@conncoll.edu. If you have an SGA question, write the same e-mail or come to Student Open Forum, every Thursday at 7:15 in the 1941 Room in Cro. Thanks for reading the Can!
