FREDS 2000 System Requirements • • • • • PC with a 300 MHz processor, 500 MHz recommended Microsoft Windows® 98 or higher Microsoft Internet Explorer® 5.01 or higher 3 GB available hard-disk space 64 MB RAM minimum, 128 MB recommended Installation Instructions • It is a good idea, though not required, to defragment your hard drive before installing FREDS 2000. You can use the Windows “Disk Defragmenter” application or a similar system utility. Defragmenting the drive can improve system performance, but can take several hours to complete. Insert FREDS 2000 CD into the CD drive. The Wise Installation System box will appear. If box does not appear, manually launch “Setup” by clicking on the “Start” button, choosing “Run” from the Startup Menu, entering “d:\setup” as the program to open (substitute appropriate drive designation of your CD drive for d:), and click “OK.” If the version of MDAC on your system is not up to date, system will prompt to add it. Click OK to install MDAC. Click OK a second time to reboot the system. FREDS installation will continue. If welcome box does not appear, manually launch “Setup” by clicking on the “Start” button, choosing “Run” from the Startup Menu, entering “d:\setup” as the program to open (substitute appropriate drive designation of your CD drive for d:), and click “OK.” Click Next. This will open the “Choose Destination Location” dialogue box. Default location is set to C:\Program Files\Freds 2000. You can change the location for the FREDS 2000 program files to another hard drive with sufficient free space. The default data directory (C:\Data\Freds 2000) cannot be changed. Click Next. The “Start Installation” box appears. Click Next to proceed. Installation will take approximately 15 to 30 minutes or more, depending on your system configuration. Click “Finish” when installation is complete. Your computer will restart. FREDS 2000 installs a shortcut icon on your desktop and another in a Folder named FREDS 2000 on your Startup Menu. • • • • • • • Launching FREDS 2000 To launch FREDS 2000, double click the FREDS 2000 icon on your desktop or select FREDS 2000 from the FREDS 2000 folder on your Startup Menu. The Help System included with FREDS 2000 is a good resource for answering questions about the application. Known Issues MSCOMCTL.OCX If, upon launching FREDS 2000, you see this error message: Click "OK". This indicates that the video card on your computer does not have drivers installed to support higher than VGA resolution and that updated video drivers are required for FREDS 2000 to operate. Contact your hardware manufacturer to obtain updated video drivers. Geography Lookup Error If, upon launching FREDS 2000 you get the following error message, click "OK." This will bring up the following dialogue: Click "Yes." This will close the FREDS 2000 application. To use the application, you need to update the Jet database engine for your system. The files for implementing this upgrade are in a folder titled "JetInstall" on the FREDS 2000 CD. Open the "JetInstall" folder. Double-Click on the appropriate Jet40SP5 file for your operating system: Operating System: Windows 98 Windows NT Windows 2000 Windows Me Use this service pack: Jet40SP5_9xNT.exe Jet40SP5_9xNT.exe Jet40SP5_W2K.exe Jet40SP5_Me.exe If you see the following error message, click "OK." This message indicates that other needed files must be added first. To add them, doubleclick on "Jet35.exe." This will launch a program for installing Data Access Objects (DAO) 3.5. Choose "Next" to continue. This brings up the "Select Components" dialogue box. The default components will be fine. Click "Next." This brings up the "Ready to Install" dialogue. Click "Next." This should bring up a window confirming successful installation. Click "Finish." This concludes the DAO 3.5 installation. You are now ready to upgrade your Jet database engine to version 4.0, Sevice Pack 5. Open the "JetInstall" folder. Double-Click on the appropriate Jet40SP5 file for your operating system: Operating System: Windows 98 Windows NT Windows 2000 Windows Me Use this service pack: Jet40SP5_9xNT.exe Jet40SP5_9xNT.exe Jet40SP5_W2K.exe Jet40SP5_Me.exe Reboot your system and try again the launch FREDS 2000. If it still does not run, re-run the setup.exe program on the install disk. If FREDS 2000 still does not run, you may need to upgrade your Internet Explorer, which often updates crucial operating system files or re-install your operating system. If FREDS 2000 still does not run, report the problem to FREDS 2000 tech support by emailing a description of what the problem is, when it occurs, exact text of any error messages, a screen shot if possible, and the operating system you are using to FREDS2000@leg.state.fl.us.
