PRE-REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Acceptance of offer to study at CPUT
It is important that you confirm your acceptance of the study offer made to you as soon as

Medical Insurance
In terms of the South African law (Immigration Act 19 of 2004), all international students who
come to study in South Africa must have proof of medical insurance cover with a medical
scheme registered in South Africa, in terms of the Medical Schemes Act, 131 of 1998.
The CPUT has tried to make this easier for you .We have contracted a service provider,
Pinnacle Health Solutions (Pinnacle), to help you get the type of medical aid product which will
qualify.
Note: not all medical insurance will qualify and you must be very sure before you buy any form
of medical insurance. The CPUT will not hesitate to reject your medical insurance if it does not
qualify, and you will then not be registered as a student. You will need to buy new cover and
will thus have to spend extra money.
Please make absolutely sure that the cover you buy is correct, or you will be wasting your
money. Contact Pinnacle for help at:+27 ( 0) 21 425 9863. or fkinnear@pinnhealth.co.za.

full academic year .We have preselected two medical insurance schemes with which Pinnacle
will help you.
1. Protea Medical Scheme, Tel +27 21 552 7111
2. Ingwe Medical Scheme, Tel +27 08 6010 2493

tainly accept only the correct medical insurance.

GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS 2010
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
• COMMUNICATION FROM THE OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
Students are urged to check their University e-mail regularly as this is the most effective way
for the Office of International Affairs to communicate any events or information affecting inter-
national students. After registration students can contact the ICTS department regarding the
process of accessing e-mail messages. Student e-mail addresses will be Student
number @cput.ac.za, e.g. 207000000@cput.ac.za.
• MONEY MATTERS
The South African currency is the Rand (ZAR), which is equal to 100 Cents (R1 = 100 cents).
Value Added Tax is levied on most goods and services. Prices of goods will indicate if the item
is vat inclusive (already added) or vat exclusive. International students can claim for a VAT
refund if the goods that are purchased are taken out of the country within 12 months of the
date of purchase (receipts and invoices must be kept).
• OPENING A BANK ACCOUNT
Students are discouraged from keeping large sums of money in their possession or in resi-
dence rooms - you do so at your own risk. You may open a bank account at a local bank,
which will then issue with you a bankcard for cash withdrawals from Auto teller/auto bank
machines (ATMs). ABSA, First National Bank, Nedbank and the Standard Bank have ATMs in
the Student Centre on the main campus.
• DRIVING IN SOUTH AFRICA
In South Africa, we drive on the left-hand side of the road. You have to be 18 years of age to
legally drive a car. An International Drivers Licence or one from your home country if it is in
English can be used in South Africa. There is zero-tolerance for drunken and reckless driving.
Heavy penalties, jail sentences or confiscation of the licence could all be imposed.
• HEALTH ISSUES
Cape Town region is not a malaria or any other tropical disease infected area. But if you decide
to travel to other areas, especially to the far north, please consult with Student Health Services
regarding appropriate vaccination. It is also important that students eat nutritionally balanced
food and regularly exercise to keep healthy all the time.
The HIV/Aids pandemic is a world-wide problem and may cause premature death to those
infected. Students are warned to fully inform themselves about remaining negative by attend-
ing awareness campaigns and information sessions. As our Institution does not discriminate
against those who are infected, the HIV/Aids Support Office exists on Campus to offer all
forms of support. A health clinic is also at your service.
11
CAPE PENINSULA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
• VACATION EMPLOYMENT AND IN-SERVICE TRAINING
1. Holders of a valid study permit may conduct part-time work for hours not exceed-
ing 20 hours per week, provided that this limitation shall not apply during academ-
ic vacation periods. A student needs to furnish the OIA with a letter of offer from
an employer and a letter consenting to employment shall then be granted.
(Regulation 22(6) of Section 13(3)(a) of the Immigration Act, 13 of 2002).
2. Students are also allowed to conduct work in the form of practical training in the
field related to his/her studies, on submission of
(a) a letter confirming that practical training is a requirement for fulfiling academic
requirements
(b) a letter from a prospective employer. (Regulation 22(7) of Section 13(3)(c) of
the Immigration Act, 13 of 2002).
• SAFETY ISSUES
Exercise caution at all times and ensure that you avoid unsafe areas as well as traveling
alone at night. Some tips: always keep your valuables locked away; avoid carrying large
sums of money; do not display valuable items such as cameras, expensive jewellery, etc.
• PERSONAL INSURANCE
Please insure all your belongings at any insurance broker. CPUT shall not be responsi-
ble for the loss of any item.
