AMERICAN PACKAGING CORPORATION STORY CITY DIVISION JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: TECHNICAL MANAGER SUMMARY: Manage daily plant technical activities encompassing new product development, specifications, material qualifications, innovation, customer complaints, and process improvements in all areas. Additionally, manage Story City Quality Assurance by ensuring quality control procedures are established and followed to meet the customer’s requirements by: developing quality assurance systems for incoming raw materials and finished goods, developing and implementing internal quality auditing procedures, analyzing customer requirements versus test procedures, conducting process capability studies, making test procedure or specification recommendations, analyzing raw material test data ensuring material meets specifications, managing the disposition of non-conforming raw materials, and working with APC customers and raw material suppliers for technical interface and to analyze root cause and corrective action plans. REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Technical Director ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Interact with Sales and Customers to develop new packaging applications Specify packaging materials and structures Manage in-plant technical trials through conducting pre-trial planning meetings, directing on-line manufacture of trial materials, documenting results of trials and ensuring trial results are met. Qualify new and alternate materials. Complete product development assignments, including but not limited to researching raw material options, conducting customer presentations, developing test method protocols and developing new packaging applications. Support the Division’s Product Development Program by providing required testing and evaluation of alternate package structures and styles. Provide lab evaluation/ testing support, as required, on specific packaging development projects. Monitor Quality Assurance to ensure that current procedures/testing correlate with customer requirements. Update system/procedures as required and develop appropriate procedures for new applications. Analyze customer complaints to ensure root cause identification and corrective action. Incorporate statistical quality control techniques into process evaluation, creating and monitoring process documentation and specification analysis versus customer requirements. Technical Manager Job Description Page 2 Establish raw material specifications with all suppliers and maintain approved raw material vendor listing. Analyze current test data as compared to feedback from customer complaints, Field Technical Service reports and customer specifications to determine that quality test procedures ensure compliance with customer end use requirements. Provide recommendations to the Technical Director on test procedure changes. Ensure compliance with established product testing procedures for both finished products and raw materials. Create and deliver effective presentations for present and potential customers, providing assurance that quality standards are maintained. Maintain an updated specification file on all raw materials (papers, films, inks, adhesives, etc.) used in their respective production process. Maintain an updated file on finished rollstock, bag and pouch specifications as well as the particular inspection/testing procedures associated with each product. Conduct the training of the shift Quality Assurance Technicians. Maintain a reporting/audit procedure to ensure that the required testing is being performed in a timely and consistent manner and that the test data is being recorded and filed in such a manner as to allow for easy review and analysis. Travel to the various customer/supplier locations as required. Manage and develop a staff of 4-7 Quality Assurance Technicians Prepare and participate in customer quality audits Interface with Field Technical Service, Sales and/or customer plant locations to resolve complaints in a timely fashion: Issue return authorization for defective material where applicable. Manage the re-inspection/rework of returned lots of material to determine root cause and extent of defect as well as the placement of good material back into inventory in a timely manner. Recommend root cause corrective action to the Manufacturing Manager and Technical Director. Participate in training, embrace concepts of and actively practice the STOP Safety Program fundamentals to aid American Packaging Corporation’s efforts to achieve a zero accident rate. Attend and participate in all company mandated meetings. Business travel required. Any other responsibilities as assigned.
