                                            1 Series

BMW’s 1 Series Coupé and Convertible
might be small packages but you can
expect big things from them. Having just
driven the new 1 Series Convertible in Spain,
I can tell you it’s absolutely sensational,
and the coupé, with its 3.0-litre twin-turbo
six will frighten the life out of Audi S3s,
Evos and STIs.
From the get-go the coupé and
convertible were designed to be a matching
pair; a modern BMW 2002 Coupé and
Convertible. And that relationship, is part
of both cars’ magic.
To the coupé first: conceived as a
genuine four-seater with a separate luggage
compartment and a practical 60:40 split-fold
rear seat, the 1 Series Coupé is an immensely
practical car. Don’t mistake me, though,
this car in 135i guise is as agile and powerful
as it is practical.
Fitted with the same 3.0-litre twin-turbo
six-cylinder engine (voted 2007 Engine
of the Year) that’s in the 335i Coupé, the
135i Coupé offers 225kW (at 5800rpm)
and 400Nm (between 1300 – 5000rpm).
That’ll get the 135i Coupé to 100km/h
in just 5.3 seconds.
Look at the 135i Coupé in profile and
you’ll see the inspiration is clearly the
legendary BMW 2002. The short front
and rear overhangs, the long engine
compartment and the greenhouse pushed
towards the rear of the car, and the large
frameless doors are all direct and modern
interpretations of the 2002.

 Favourite look this winter?
“I love the unpredictable look of little dresses
with heavy opaque tights and platform shoes.
Your legs look so much longer, and the look
is fun, fresh and suits our climate.”

 how to wear it:
“With a big chunky neck piece, killer shades
 and statement bag!”

What do you love most about your
2008 collection?
“The fabrics. Everyone is commenting on the
quality of my textiles. They feel and look
gorgeous. I am also really proud as all my
 products are made locally.”

What has inspired your collection?
“There is always a glamour aspect to my clothes.
Metallics have played a big role in this
collection as they are total glamour. I simply
used washed out versions to make them more
 user-friendly.”

My number one fashion tip is…
“Dress to reflect your mood. Have fun with
fashion. Mix new trends with classic styles
 that suit you.”

Why did you choose a MINI?
“It was mostly a marketing decision.
Everyone looks at MINIs. They’re fun and
the branding reflects positively on us also.”
What do you love most about your MINI?
                        “The mood lights, most definitely!”
                         how has it been customised?
Ocea’s MINI has received the full
                         branding treatment, right down
                         to the registration plate.
Where do you go in your MINI?
“My husband seems to drive it
everywhere, but I also use it for work.”

Why did you choose a MINI?
“I have always loved the MINI but the older
models were not exactly what I wanted. I
took my BMW to get serviced and got given
a MINI to test drive – and absolutely fell in
love. The next thing I knew, I had a race car!”
What do you love most about your MINI?
“It allows me to revisit my youth.
It’s just a great buzz. My MINI is
                         like a go-cart with comfort.”
                         how has it been customised?
“It’s got the 1.6litre turbo, mags, sunroof,
carbon dash, gear stick – the whole JCW
kit. It’s very different from any other MINI.”
Where do you go in your MINI?
“I recently took it to Victor Harbor and
had some fun and games. Adelaide is all
about short trips and it used to be quite
painful getting a park for my four wheel
drive. The MINI just zips in and out. And it’s
great because the different gears give it a
different feel depending on my mood. I defy
anyone to say it’s not a fun car to drive.”

“It’s basically me, as a car. I used to have
BMW and thought it was time for a change.
I went for a ride in it, Joel showed me the
mood lighting feature, and I was sold!”

“I love that it is eco-friendly, goes
                                                          like the clappers, comfortable and
roomier than you’d think. It is basically
a very cool car in every regard.”
                                                          how has it been customised?
“I’ve got the sunroof, mood lighting, sports
                                                          interior, black anthracite roof, automatic
lights and wipers. What I love most
about it is that you can customise the
MINI from scratch. There is only one of
its kind with this exact configuration.”

“I mostly just drive the MINI around
the city for work. I finally get to park in
the ‘small car’ bays! I am still running
the engine in, but I am envisaging a
long drive to the Barossa soon.”

“I was given the opportunity by Peregrine
Corporation to use the car for work related
duties and the odd private activity, such
as weekend racing at Speedway Park.”
What do you love most about your MINI?
“I like the car’s ability to manoeuvre through
the streets of Adelaide. It is sturdy, holds
the road well and feels safe for a smaller
car. My very first car was a 1964 Mini
so the chance to drive a MINI again is
great. The new one actually has brakes!”
                                                          how has it been customised?
“We’ve had the company’s unique branding
added to the car. The MINI really does
match well with the image of our C Coffee
brand. It’s a curious car that gives you
a buzz – same as the coffee we offer.

“I go everywhere, man – just like the
song. This car can be seen in any of

Snapped!

    MINI Clubman Launch
After word that Virus Normaleus had
spread the nation, Adelaide MINI Garage
was petitioned by MINI to administer the
    ‘Cure for Normal’.
Over 150 patients flooded into the
Adelaide MINI Normal Clinic on March 20th
2008 in hope of being cured of their ‘normal’
symptoms. Patients were treated to fabulous
wines and enjoyed a delicious array of
gourmet canapés which helped relieve their
     symptoms temporarily. Guests also enjoyed
performances by Le Benz which certainly
aided in numbing any feelings of ‘normal’
until the MINI Clubman was revealed by
Dr Williams, Cure for Normal Specialist.
Once the MINI Clubman was revealed
all immediately saw signs of their illness
dissipate but quickly learnt the only way
to be truly cured was to test drive the all
     new MINI Clubman!
Thank you to the following sponsors who
helped in the ‘Cure for Normal’:
