AdSense Success Story # 1 – John Tulus
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is John Tulus. I was born in October of 1966 in Córdoba, Argentina, South America. As a child, I played with my first Commodore 64, developing small and easy programs to defy my school friends. As I got used to programming, I started to develop more complex programs, some of them to help me solve math problems, others to store information, and others just to play around. My passion for computing started growing more and more, and as the industry developed, I was amazed by the growing possibilities that were becoming available. I later traded my Commodore for my first real PC, an XT, and decided to dedicate my life to studying and working with computers. In University, I developed my ability as Systems Analyst and started to read about the capabilities of interconnectivity between computers. Networks started to become a standard and computers started "talking" to each other. Then, one particular event grabbed my attention: the ability to send information through computers to distant places. The mere idea of thinking about all the possibilities that this opened fascinated me. I started to see that the business of the future was in what today is the INTERNET. These events took me on the path I am today, working with the Internet, and exploring its almost limitless possibilities. Today, at age 38, I live comfortably in this city I chose to live in. I travelled all over the world, but I love my place and work from here.
4
How did you get started to make money on the Internet?
Once I graduated as Systems Analyst, I worked for several companies in my country, developing software and different applications, but I felt that I lacked something that was my own. After having studied Marketing in the prestigious University of Córdoba, and having obtained a Masters degree in that speciality, I decided to quit my job to develop my personal project... I was sure that I couldn´t fail. Once having acquired both the technical knowledge and the marketing skills, I knew that I could combine both and apply them to the Internet. I started with small projects like web sites for friends. At first, many of them weren´t aware of the possibilities. They saw the Internet as just a passing fad, or something "hip", but once I convinced some of them to create their web site, they started to understand the potential that the Internet has to reach the whole world. After some time of having their sites online, I received exclamations from them like: "John, with the Internet you´ve hit it on the spot, how could we not see this before?" After some time of developing web sites for others, I knew it was time to start to work on the ideas for developing my own site, my own online company. I put all my ideas together, combined them with the experience I had achieved developing web sites for others, and put in motion the creation of my site. Once the site was up and running, all I had to do was start generating traffic and wait for the money to roll in. I remember the first cheque I received... what a rush!! $29. That motivated me to keep on with the project of the life that I desired. Little by little, I learned about the commercial side of the Internet. There was very little known at that point. Many web sites had failed, some of them had become a huge success. So, I tried to learn from others, what made one site successful and others not? How could some web site owners earn millions, and others have huge amounts of traffic, but not have a decent revenue? This and many more questions were the ones that led me to investigate further and further on how to convert an attractive site with traffic into a site that would generate revenue. The beginning was tough, it was mostly based on trial and error. We 5 were all learning as we went along. There was no sure formula for
success. So, reading, studying, comparing, making mistakes and learning from them were the only tools we had to move along. Many times I even thought that revenues were only for the megasites, like Google or AOL. I was discouraged at several points, but thanks to my faith in the Internet, and all the information available, I kept on trying different alternatives. All the information for being successful was right there, in the Internet itself, it was only a matter of finding it and using it in the best way. So, I kept on trying and learning. The eventual cheques I received started to increase little by little and these would motivate me to keep on trying. At first, I couldn´t make a decent living out of that, and had to rely on other small jobs to get along. Eventually, the cheques started increasing enough as to be able to dedicate my full time to the Internet. Now, I can´t complain... we live very well with my family made up of my wife, two beautiful kids and my faithful friend... my dog Bob.
When did you first decide that Google AdSense Program was right for you?
As Google started to offer more than just search engine services, I started to pay more attention to what it had to offer. In May of 2004 I started to work with Google´s Pay Per Click program, unfortunately with quite bad results. Once again, it was a new concept, and I wasn´t sure of its benefits. I even thought of abandoning the Adsense Program at a certain point, thinking that it had just been something that Google had been testing. I decided to give it a better try and started to collect information. I read an infinity of articles and notes, I studied in detail the FAQ of Adsense. Many sites were appearing with Google Ads, so I supposed that it was starting to catch on. Webmasters must probably be finding benefits, so I started to work with Adsense in more detail. Finally, in October of the same year I received my birthday present: a $300 cheque from Google Adsense. From that moment on, I realized that Adsense was the indicated PPC program for me. My personality does not let me stay still, so I started to work on what would be my new project: TO INCREASE MY EARNINGS WITH GOOGLE ADSENSE. I read my many files again and revised the possible errors that I could have been making. They were long days and long nights of 6 studying, I was motivated but exhausted. It kept my mind busy day
and night. I was trying to figure out how it could benefit me in particular, how I could apply it and take full advantage of its benefits. On the night of the 31st of December, during the moment of the New Year´s celebration came the illumination... the secret of earning much more money with Adsense. I knew that web site traffic was essential, as well as content, but Google surely had a way of identifying content based on keywords. I discovered that some of my sites got better page rank and got paid more per click on Google Ads. This meant that content and keywords were surely ranked and paid accordingly. I started to investigate which words paid more than others, comparing different sites and through extensive research. Finally, there was no doubt about it: there is a keyword rank, and Google pays according to the importance of the content. So, success was based on keywords, content and traffic. Combining these three factors would be essential and thus I started to think of ways of presenting my sites in the form that would benefit me most. This didn´t mean changing all my web sites, but just presenting them in a better way, focused more on content and keywords. And so TopPayingWords.com was born: The Biggest and Best Top Paying Keywords List. (actually with +150,000 keywords) On the 1st of January of 2005 I was already working on my new project. With this site, I presented to other webmasters the most extensive keyword list according to how Google ranks them. Knowing what keywords pay more, and adding them to your content boosts Adsense revenue, because now you are including words that get paid more by Google. I restructured my site, changed a few things from their place, and added the top paying words related with quality content. The results appeared imediately; my revenues were tremendously increased.
Do you prefer AdSense over Affiliate Programs promotion?
Yes, I prefer Google Adsense over any other affiliate program because it has Google guarantee. Thousands of websites are now applying Adsense to their sites. Not only do you have the Google guarantee, but visitors to your web site may also see it as having the Google "seal of confidence". In a certain way, having Adsense on 7 your site shows visitors that your site has been approved by Google.
Nevertheless, having Adsense on your site doesn´t mean that you can´t have other affiliate programs combined with it. You can actually have as many programs as you want, but I prefer Adsense specially because the conversion rate to money is much faster with Adsense. No other affiliate program converts clicks to money as fast as Google Adsense. With Google Adsense I may need just 10 optimized clicks to earn $20. By optimized, I mean clicks on a page that has keywords that pay the most in Adsense. With other affiliate programs I need at least 200 visits to an optimized site with related content and optimized traffic to earn the same amount of money. As you can see, Google Adsense beats any other affiliate program by far. The only thing I would improve, though, is the user stats system.
Could you reveal your first 90 days AdSense earnings?
As I said before, the beginnings were difficult. There were days in which I earned just $0.50, $1.62 and even $5, but as I got to know the program more and combining the TopPayingWords.com with the content, there were days that I made more than $200. More and more I started to realize that keywords were essential to increasing revenues. As I started understanding the use of keywords and developed a keyword list rank, revenues started increasing incredibly. Traffic is essential to make money in this and the other PPC programs. You can´t expect to make $5.000 a month with just 100 daily visits. Having you site well ranked and generating traffic is the first step. The more traffic you have, the more possibilities you´ll have of visitors clicking on your Google Ads. The optimization of the web site is fundamental in all of this. The site must be very well ranked in the most important search engines with well chosen words in your content. The Adword campaigns also help to obtain traffic. It´s very important, before starting with any Adsense campaign, to see which 8 tools we have available. A good site, good content, traffic, the
TopPayingWords.com Database and a little bit of luck are the recipe to be successful with this program. Today I can say that my objective has been accomplished. My own experience with Adsense was a learning curve, because it was just the beginning. But now, Adsense has been applied by thousands of websites and many webmasters are benefitting from it. So, for those that want to start with Adsense on their sites, it is much easier and they will be able to see immediate results if applying all the right ingredients: traffic, content and keywords.
What big mistakes do you see others make with AdSense and how they can be avoided?
#1 - Not using Channels I didn´t make this Adsense error but if you aren't using Adsense Channels you are losing money and don´t have a way of tracking your development. If you don't believe me, set up at least URL channels for your pages and you'll see in real time what works and what does not.
#2 - Using the horizontal format So far, the results are much better when people use the vertical format.
#3 - Placing Adsense Ad Units on the top, bottom, right and left of content The Adsense publisher community may not totally agree, but don't hide your ads by neatly stuffing them on the borders of your site. Put your Adsense Ad Unit in the middle where your visitor will be forced to see them. It's not that your visitor doesn't want to see the ads it's that over the years of web surfing we've become blind to traditional banner locations.
#4 - Adding your sites to the filter out list One Webmaster thought that the way to let Google know that you wanted to add additional sites to your AdSense account was to list 9 the URLs under the Advanced options tab. In reality, this tab is used
to list the sites you want to filter out (i.e., not display AdWords) on your site. Google automatically knows what pages you want to include under your AdSense account when you add the code to the pages. So, you can add any site you own without additional paperwork.
#5 - Not testing. Because of the limited information Google currently supplies, this can be difficult. Nonetheless, you want to see what works and what doesn’t on your site. Experiment.
#6 - Applying too early. If you don’t have at least 20 good content pages and some traffic, you’ll most likely be rejected. Not applying because you believe 'this isn’t for me'. Sure, there are situations where using AdSense doesn’t make sense. However, we believe that AdSense will benefit many people who currently have decided the program isn’t for them. For example, we’ve heard from a number of professionals who feel that having AdWords on their sites will ‘taint their image.’ That’s possible, we suppose. However, we believe that for most professionals, the added credibility gained by having ‘Ads by Google’ on your site (and the correct assumption by visitors that Google has therefore checked you out at least a little), more than compensates for this potential downside.
Could you reveal some of your AdSense Web Sites and explain how you've come up with the ideas to develop them?
http://www.TopPayingWords.com Once I discovered that Google payed according to content and keywords, and after thorough research on the subject, I devised a list of keywords that paid the most. I applied these keywords to my own sites, and was amazed on how my revenues from Google increased dramatically. Now, the biggest part of my revenues are thanks to 10 Google Adsense.
Through TopPayingWords.com, webmasters have access to the biggest keyword database on the Internet, ranked according to those that pay the most in Adsense. With just applying these keyowrds to their sites, webmasters increase their Adsense revenues immediately.
http://www.wmxp.com In this site, I offer all types of services for webmasters. The idea for this site appeared when I first started working as webmaster. There were many things I needed to do for my sites and discovered that I had to develop tools for them. How do you go about optimizing your site for Google and other Search Engines?
The optimization of a site is a fundamental aspect to make it successful. Search engines are great collaborators to reach the desired objective for anybody that has a site on the Internet, that is: TRAFFIC, the magic word. I study my website stats every day, improve the meta keywords based on this analysis, and the distribution of images on the site. You must also be well informed on how the indexing of pages change in search engines, due to the fact that understanding this will make your task of being in the top ten easier.
How do you go about converting your Site traffic into more Adsense Income?
Through traffic analysis to our site we improve the CTR ( click through rate ) and since we added the TopPayingWords.com database we increased the amount of money per click. If you are already running Adsense on your site, you are probably thinking of ways to increase your Adsense income. If your Adsense is performing poorly, I have 3 (three) Tips for you: 1. Decrease the number of Adsense blocks that you are displaying on a page. I don't know how others have experienced this, but my income seemed to be less if I had more than one block of Adsense ads displayed at once – and your CTR is definitely less if you have more than one ad impression at a time. My suggestion would be to have one Adsense block in your content, and an Adlinks block somewhere at the top of your page. Adlinks is great because if someone clicks on a link in it, they are taken to a page with many more choices on it, which increases your chances of them clicking through. 2. Change your link colour to blue. While I cannot disclose my CTR I can tell you that this one little change more than doubled my 16 CTR. I know that there are others out there who advocate that your
link colour should be the same as the other links on your site, but try it out for yourself for a day or two. I think you will be highly surprised! 3. Set the URL colour to the same colour as the ad's text. This makes the URL ''melt" in and makes the link colour stand out more, definitely making it more "clickable". The above three changes definitely resulted in doubling my own Adsense income. Experiment with it and see how it works for you.
Could you share some profit-pulling TIPS our readers can instantly use to maximize their AdSense Income (24 hours)?
To be able to increase your earnings through Adsense, it's very important to have a site with good content, good traffic, and as said before, combine it with the TopPayingWords.com database. You also have to place the Adsense ads in the places where the navigator will most probably click on. Google advises on how to place them at the following link:
https://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/static.py?page=tips.html
17
As also mentioned previously, keywords can make a big difference on your earnings. Google ranks content according to most keywords and places ads through Adsense accordingly. Some ads pay more than others per click, according to content. So, by including words at your site that have high ranking and attracts better paid ads, you can dramatically increase profits. Below are two examples on how to increase earnings using the TopPayingWords.com database to decide what keywords to place on your site: Case Scenario #1 If your site is about retirement, where the keyword pays $0.63, you could associate your content with the TopPayingWords's keyword "health insurance company", which pays $10.36. By knowing which keywords pay more, you can change the text of your site to include these Top Paying Words, create new pages for your existing site with these words, or create new websites with Top Paying Words.
18
The key to success is to find associations between the content of your website and content with Top Paying Words' keywords. Case Scenario #2 If your site is about cars, where the keyword pays $1.48, you could associate your content with the TopPayingWords' keyword "cheap car insurance", which pays $19.
What's your experience with the 'Search Articles' AdSense box on http://www.wmxp.com?
The experience with the 'Search Articles' Adsense box at http://www.wmxp.com is very positive, due to the fact that we have increased our profits approximately 20% thanks to it. Getting ahead of its official release, we're developing a new system that is already at the beta phase, so that these articles, distributed freely (always respecting copyrights) are not considered as repeated content by search engines.

If you'd have to build a Web Site from scratch to generate AdSense Income on Autopilot, how would you do it in 30 days or less?
1 – Find a niche. What is an Internet niche? An internet niche is simply a keyphrase that you type in the search engine boxes. The results that they give are all the webpages which have that keyphrase and belong to that Internet niche. The more that keyphrase is used in a webpage, the more it will be relevant to the search and higher it will rank in its positioning in the results given by the search engines. Free tool http://www.wmxp.com/overture 2 - Domain Name Find a good domain dame, in accordance with the niche where you want to work. A domain name which is suitable to the subject matter treated as META KEYWORDS, which contributes to place the results among the first hits in the search engines. 3 – Use a good hosting service. This is a very important point. If there is no hosting, there is no site…. Free hosting services, as such, do not provide the certainty that they will always be up and online, which can result in the loss of time and money. This is why I recommend the use of paid hosting services. There are excellent and feasible hosting service providers out there. 4 – Link exchange It is always a good idea to exchange links with other sites which may be more popular and have a higher page rank. This will help the search engines find and index your Web site more quickly. I recommend http://www.linkbuildingpro.com . This site is growing constantly.
20
5 - Forums Publicizing the site in discussion forums related to the chosen niche, which will quickly bring about targeted and related traffic. 6 - Top Paying Keywords Building the site in combination with the contents of the TopPayingWords.com database will ensure a greater participation in Google’s AdSense program. Very important: SPAM is USELESS. By using this formula, you will be receiving income from AdSense in less than 30 days.
How do you plan to increase your AdSense income in the next 90 days? Are you developing NEW Sites or adding more content to the ones you already have?
I am working on both: developing new sites, and adding additional content to the sites I already have. It's always good to develop new ideas, look for new venues... maybe even dusting out that old project that was archived in some place in our PC could give us an unexpected surprise.
Who are the people that inspired you to start with AdSense and why?
The company that inspired me was definitely Google. A company that in 8 years went from a small University project to one of the biggest and best seen companies in the global market. My thought was simple: The things that were useful for them is also useful for me, that's for sure. If they make money, so can I. I was also inspired by what other colleagues write about this system and the amount of money you can make. If you do things correctly, knowing the system, you can really make a very good profit.

What do you see as the NEXT big trend in AdSense moneymaking?
I've learned that your Adsense income can be boosted through RSS traffic. It's starting to become the next big online trend. RSS is the new way to increase your website traffic. Check out some related links: Google Opens Up Beta of AdSense for Feeds http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3505766 Evolution of Google AdSense http://www.softwaremarketingresource.com/article62.html Google AdSense for Feeds https://services.google.com/ads_inquiry/aff
The more people are learning about it, the more they are starting to use it. Sites that have it get traffic from people that sign up for news and information that they're interested in. They either download a RSS Reader, which is a simple software that allows you to read RSS feeds, or they read it directly from their browsers. This traffic is much better than the regular surfer, because they are better customers, due to the fact that it's specific content they are looking for. Not only can you get dynamic content and specific traffic from better buyers, but it also improves search engine listing. This is a new technology that is catching on very fast. To better understand it and get a grip on it, I developed a tool so that webmasters can have updated content from several sources and show the latest news on their websites in a dynamic and random way. You can see a working demo of this tool at http://www.wmxp.com/randomrss

AdSense Success Story # 2 – William Charlwood
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I'm a full time internet marketer and am lucky enough to be able to work from home or indeed anywhere in the world where I can get internet access. My wife, Vicky, also works on the internet and she is employed by a largish company and manages websites and intranets for them. We met at Oxford University ages ago, have two children - a boy and a girl aged 10 and 9 respectively - and live in a beautiful classic English village called Ramsbury about 100km or 70 miles west of London. I love the strong community spirit in the village and enjoy popping out to the local shops to buy my daily fix of Diet Coke. I guess I find the ability to go and have a chat with “real” people is an important aspect of my daily life in a funny way because I spend most of my time in email “conversations” with people all round the world. It's a healthy counterbalance. Life's pretty good now at the tender age of 45 but it took a while to get here and I've had some fairly rough times on the way all because I have always wanted to do my own thing and generally, if you have the itch to be independent, it just doesn't go away. But it is a rare thing to make a success of independence first time round.
How did you get started to make money on the Internet?
I got started making money on the 23 internet almost by accident. I was 24 in a real fix work-wise. I'd started up a dot.com business in 2000 that
needed heavy investment to get going but the market turned against us and, to cut a long and very painful story short, the business ended up having around $50,000 in the bank but it needed around $6 million to get going because we needed to buy in some expensive technology. Initially things had looked very good - we had an investment bank in the City of London lined up to raise the money and then suddenly everything to do with the internet went bad. No matter what your business proposal was, if it mentioned the internet, you couldn't raise any money. So we had to slash everything back to virtually zero and my salary was also zero for over a year. I made the mistake of being too tenacious when realistically there was absolutely no way that I could, on my own, change the tide of negative sentiment in the market. I'm not saying my business idea was brilliant but a lot of good stuff went under alongside the rubbish. And then, of all the stupid things to do, instead of getting a job like a sane person would, I invented a new system that let people respond to adverts by sending a text message from their phone that triggered the delivery of an email information pack to them. The neat thing was that you didn't need to register with the system before you started to use it. I still think it was a great idea but, in spite of getting major brands like Ford on board, the business also needed venture capital funding and it simply wasn't available. In fact I remember talking to the head of marketing in one of the largest electrical goods manufacturers in the UK about the internet and she said that it was only a fad and would go away pretty soon so why was I wasting her time! So with all that behind me and a growing personal financial crisis, I immersed myself into the internet initially to see if I could find a job. And when doing that, I noticed these funny little ads on the side of Google's search results and got curious. Funnily enough I thought they were a complete waste of time: they were so small and dull but, as I discovered, boy do they pack a punch and as we all know, they are the source of all AdSense income. This deep research phase was really important for me though. I signed up to loads of ezines, trawled thousands of websites and started to make notes but at the same time it was quite frustrating. There seemed to be a closed network of people online who worked together, promoted each others products and had stitched everything up. I just couldn't see how to get in.

The other problem was that every day I would either discover some
information that seemed to contradict other things I'd learnt or that would seem to hold an even faster key to riches. I guess that was when I nearly blew it because although I was learning, learning, learning I wasn't earning at all. The other problem was that I was absolutely hooked. I'd wake up at 4 o'clock every morning for days on end because my mind was full of ideas and deep down I was convinced that I was just about to discover the golden path to automatic wealth. I was like an excited teenager but without the youthfulness to go with it and I got really tired! But I was smart enough to recognise that knowledge alone wasn't going to make me any money so I gave myself a deadline and a goal and I started to write a book about AdWords. It went into the details about how AdWords ads - and hence AdSense ads - are backed by a complex real-time Vickrey auction process, and I discussed keyword research, the anomalies you get with the keyword estimation tool, dynamic keywords insertion etc. In fact I now run AdWords campaigns for multi-national companies as a consultant via www.adwordsmanagement.com. And then I started writing a book about Viral Marketing. And then I started writing a book for small businesses about how to use the internet to sell online. In short, I just carried on doing the same old learning thing but slowed myself down by writing too and never finishing anything. At around the same time I came across AdSense and thought it was a beautiful concept. You could literally make money without even selling anything! I started up putting a few ads on my old dot.com website and made a few cents and , you know, once you start seeing money accumulate in your AdSense account you get kind of excited. You sort of start willing strangers all round the world to visit your site and click but of course they don't. But that was a key moment for me. I'd read about affiliate sales programs and how you could make money that way but remained sceptical and then suddenly Google, big old Google, started to pay me real money. It came through the mail. I could spend it. It was that real.

When did you first decide that Google AdSense Program was right for you ?
It was around that time - late 2003, or early 2004 that I started doing some really in-depth research into AdSense and began to unpick the system. You see I've always had a fascination with marketing systems and reverse-engineering things that I think are neat. It seemed to me that whilst Google stuck firmly to what I call “The Google Uncertainty Principle”, in other words they never tell you the precise details of how they work, I thought I could find out anyway by doing some experiments. So I set up something that I call “The AdSense Lab” where I occasionally do daft things. For example, I once set up a completely blank page on two different sites to see what AdSense ads they would pull. Turned out to be a rather dangerous thing to do because Google wrote to me the next day and told me to take the code off the pages. But I learnt that the AdSense system picks up clues about the content of your pages from your overall site. Another thing I did was paste identical HTML in two pages on different sites and gave them identical names. So the only difference between the pages was the domain name. That produced different ads on each page too which again told me something. Anyway, alongside doing this arcane stuff I also researched the market because one message I got repeatedly was that it was a smart idea to create a good ebook about certain topics and the funny thing was, nobody seemed to be writing one about AdSense. Now the pure marketers who don't have a passion for a subject but who simply find out if there is demand would never do what I did because I hadn't proved in advance that there would be demand for such a book. But I didn't care. It suddenly seemed to me that here was a fascinating topic that I already knew a lot about with the major attraction of it being about two eternally interesting things: making money and Google. Well, okay, Google's not an eternal interest but it sure as hell has attracted a bit of attention in the last few years. So in my optimistic moments I thought I'd stumbled upon something 27 that was going to make me some money at last. In my pessimistic
moments I thought I was wasting time - again. As I said, I now know that if you are starting your internet business from scratch there is nothing more effective than writing an informative book about a subject to get going. I wanted to get going with a website about AdSense so I wrote The Definitive Guide to Google AdSense, using all the research I'd done into finding high value topics, why some clicks were worth so much more than others, traffic building, copy writing, page optimisation and my AdSense lab experiments and so on. I then got in touch with list-owners, sometimes by phoning them up. I sent them review copies and, after they'd read it and decided it was a good book, they started to promote it to their subscribers. In essence I practiced what I preached and it all went back to some simple but very powerful advice I read somewhere - write the book you would want to read. I wanted to know exactly how to make the most money with Google AdSense and having learnt, I put all my knowledge into my ebook. I then started to do it. That book got me into the loop and in hindsight it is pretty obvious why: it is a solid information product and I pay out a 50% commission on any sales that my affiliates bring in. Win-win. So people with lists are keen to promote it which makes both of us money. Getting into the loop, as I call it, was key for me but funnily enough I didn't realise that writing my book would do the trick - I just wanted a product to sell. Now hundreds if not thousands of people are actively driving traffic to my site because there is a financial incentive for them to do so - they get sales. All this traffic is clearly interested in what my site is about and because AdSense serves up relevant ads, they get clicked and my income grows. The other real beauty from my perspective is that I also use links in the book to drive traffic to my site and that traffic also means clicks which means more AdSense income. Alongside writing my book, I set up my autoresponder, registered the domain name www.FactsAboutAdSense.com and got going. I needed traffic so I started posting articles on forums, advertising on AdWords and occasionally getting hits via the search engines. Funnily enough for some quite good terms I started to rank above Google quite quickly. I think from memory I was top for “adsense faqs” for a while (maybe I still am.)
28
So the fact is I started out with AdSense with absolutely no traffic
which is not the ideal way to go about things. However, my site now routinely ranks in the top 30,000 on Alexa and just yesterday it ranked 8,837 which I feel very good about particularly because I have got there in around 12 months from scratch.
UPDATE - Alexa.com ranking:
But going back to your question specifically, the decision I made to go with AdSense was a twin one: I decided to write a book about what I'd learnt AND build traffic by all means I could think of to build a twin-income stream of ebook sales and AdSense. My decision was supported by the fact that the principle of AdSense was so neat. You really could make money on the internet without selling anything!

Do you prefer AdSense over Affiliate Programs promotion?
Good question this. The answer is that it depends. In fact I've written a Special Report precisely on this topic that most of my AdSense Insider ezine subscribers have downloaded. It's a pragmatic decision in my view. If you have plenty of time and can find affiliate programs to suit each page of your site and you can be bothered to set them all up then without a doubt I'd take the affiliate route because it is usually more profitable. But none of us have enough time and we are all a bit lazy really so what I do is shove AdSense code on pages that don't have other specific aims and put affiliate ads on those pages where I know it is worth my while taking the trouble to set up each affiliate link. You see the AdSense code does all this for you super fast (and you can accelerate the process to by using some clever site building tools) but you don't get paid as much per click on average. Setting up an affiliate link takes longer so I do it on busy pages where I am happy not to have AdSense ads. And there are fewer affiliate products than there are AdSense advertisers. Actually, there's a little secret you can exploit here: if you persistently see the same AdSense ads ranking high on your page, you can be reasonably certain that the advertiser is making money so check his/her site to see if there is an affiliate program. If there is, you will almost certainly increase your income by signing up and replacing those AdSense ads with your affiliate link. Don't forget to use your AdSense control panel to stop that advertiser advertising on your site at the same time otherwise you risk having your affiliate earnings cannibalised. I do have a different angle on this to most people though because I'm kind of obliged to have AdSense on nearly all the pages on www.FactsAboutAdSense.com because it would look a little daft if I didn't! By the way, you can download that report - Google AdSense versus Affiliates programs – here: http://www.factsaboutadsense.com/adsensevaffiliates.htm?t3

Could you reveal your first 90 days AdSense earnings?
I'm sure a politician would never dream of giving you this answer but I would say that my earnings were absolutely miserable in the first 3 months of my AdSense participation which may come as a surprise. Perhaps $200, I can't remember. I do remember that I made 23 cents on my first day and whilst that is not a lot, it still equated to an annual income of around $80. But the way I had to tackle AdSense was from the ground up. I really did start from absolute scratch. To begin with I had no website, no traffic, no list, no joint venture partners, nothing. You've always got to look through the numbers to see where people have come from. When you see big numbers cited you need to dig around a bit to uncover how impressive they really are. I read about other people who instantly seem to walk into high AdSense earnings but the fact is you can't unless you already have a strong web presence or a massive advertising budget. Let me explain that a bit with an example. I have many thousands of subscribers to my AdSense Insider ezine and one day in April 2005 I told them that I'd created a new website called www.1stProfitPrograms.com. I'd built it in 3 hours and 15 minutes to demonstrate a new website building tool that I'd purchased that was designed to help you build sites with AdSense ads on them. Anyway, 2 days later www.1stProfitProgram.com ranked somewhere around 16,000 in Alexa which was quite impressive but I couldn't possibly have done this unless I already had built up my AdSense Insider list. I'm pleased that I now have this traffic pulling power but I really did start from scratch and now around one year in I'm doing fine. By the way, if you want to subscribe all you need to do is send an email to adsense@getresponse.com and you'll get your first edition almost immediately.
31
Also, can you reveal the link of your Web Site that earned you those commissions?
Well my very first clicks are from an embarrassing site, embarrassing because I look at it now and see so many design errors. The truth is that I haven't made any changes to the site for about 2 year and, if it still exists at all, it languishes somewhere on the server of a company in Reading, UK. The domain name is www.rsvpi.co.uk and it was the site of the text messaging business I kicked off. A few days later I'd posted ads on www.FactsAboutAdSense.com and I did that better. I had a load of content up, lots of linked pages, a decent site map, forum postings linked back to my site - and a truly terrible design. It didn't seem to matter much though. I got traffic, bought traffic too and in those days surprisingly I always felt, the keyword “adsense” on AdWords was really cheap. Then I put an autoresponder sequence in place and steadily started to build a list. Whilst I am always looking at ways of increasing my AdSense income, I've also not played the comparison game with others. As far as I'm concerned, what matters is what you make from a typical visitor over time. If you are doing well per visitor, you have a relatively straightforward method of increasing your earnings: just get more traffic. If I had the traffic that some internet people are getting I'd retire on my AdSense income because my click through rates are high and I get paid a comfortable amount per click. As things stand, my traffic is growing daily, my content is growing weekly and by implementing some viral tricks I don't think I could stop my AdSense income growing even if I wanted to!
What big mistakes do you see others make with AdSense and how they can be avoided?
I'd say the biggest mistake people make is not getting involved to begin with and I can understand why people don't. First, they may simply not have heard of AdSense which is fair enough. But there are a lot of people out there who are a bit nervous of the whole thing. I mean I was pretty uncertain that I would get www.FactsAboutAdSense.com accepted to begin with (which would 32 have been a bit of a disaster!) but as with so many things on the
internet, you've got to take some action to get anywhere so if you are reading this and still dilly-dallying, just do it. I was also nervous that Google might have taken exception to the fact that I was proposing to use AdSense on a website that was about AdSense. But if we narrow our audience down to those who are using AdSense I think the biggest mistake people are making is not testing. The fact is that you will make some money if you shove the AdSense code up. But if you think about it, what is the likelihood that the way you've placed the ads, the color schemes you've chosen and the ad formats you've selected are going to be the best ones for your site. There must be now, with all the color schemes available and the new Ad links formats, and text and/or image ads, millions and millions of combinations you could use so the chances of you hitting the optimum combination first time are effectively zero. Yet few people really test. What you have to do is use the Channels feature of your AdSense control panel to monitor each page if you can until you have good quality data. Then make a change and measure again. If the new way is more profitable, then try to beat it with a third way and so on. It's standard stuff and I know it all takes time but the beauty of it is that, once you've optimised a page, it will just go on chugging out money potentially for years to come. I think this is a key point that people forget. Everyone is rushing about trying to make a fast buck and not looking at the longer term. I take the view that a strongly performing page should be assessed on the basis of what it is likely to make in a year rather than a day. If you start multiplying your daily page earnings by 365 you'll fairly soon find that, incredible as it may seem to someone new to AdSense, just one little page can be delivering hundreds of dollars a year - and all without really selling anything. I just love it! And I'll never forget the kick I got when my first $5+ click came in. I mean, I just sat there thinking: that money just appeared out of the blue. It was fantastic. Another error I see people making all over the place and not just with AdSense is not using an autoresponder. Here's the reason why an autoresponder is almost always a critical tool. As with most things on the internet, what matters is traffic plus
33
conversion where conversion is when your visitor takes the action you want. So with affiliate sales a conversion may be purchasing a product. With AdSense, a conversion is a click on an ad on your site. Without an autoresponder you have only one chance to get a conversion from each visitor. If they click, they leave your site and you make some money. If they don't click, they will still probably leave your site and you'll have made no money. If you have a powerful autoresponder in place then a reasonable number of people will sign up for your free information in return for giving you permission to market to them automatically. I have one set up on www.FactsAboutAdSense.com and I get around 30% of all first time visitors signing up which I know is pretty high but the key thing is I get to invite everyone on my list back to my site from time to time and, guess what, when they re-visit, they click on ads and my income goes up. Best of all, I don't then lose them just because they have clicked on an ad on my site and disappeared to another site because they remain on my list throughout (unless they unsubscribe in the meantime.) I can call on this income any time I want now and it increases daily as I grow my list.
Could you reveal some of your AdSense Web Sites and explain how you've come up with the ideas to develop them?
My favourite website is www.FactsAboutAdSense.com. It was my first serious internet marketing venture and it generates a lot of cash for me both from AdSense and other related products. I built the first incarnation with FrontPage which I really don't much like but I am in the process of converting it over to a new format using Xsite Pro, the same tool I used to build www.1stProfitPrograms.com The reason I am switching is because I am a lousy web designer. Not only do my sites look terrible but I never get round to sorting out my site maps which means I am pouring money down the drain. In fact at the moment if you poke around www.FactsAboutAdSense.com you'll find 4 different designs templates in use, all with different fonts and color schemes etc. A terrible mess that embarrasses me 34 but what the heck, they make money.
I'm only going to tell you about one other site www.commercialreality.co.uk which is a site I use to sell marketing consultancy services from. (In the UK the word “reality” has nothing to do with real estate - it means what actually happens or exists). Clearly, the main role of that site is not to generate pure AdSense income but it does show you how you can use AdSense to generate income from otherwise non-income generating pages. There are a lot of people out there making a fat pile with AdSense from various website and they too are cagey about what they are doing. In fact I know one guy, he's also in the UK, who is getting a 30% click through rate on some of his pages so if you are seeing 1% or 2% you have some way to go. His secret, by the way, is to be super-niche in a rich field where there are a lot of AdWords advertisers bidding high prices. I've written a Special Report about this process called “How to make High Paying Keywords work” and it's available from www.FactsAboutAdSense.com/bookstore.htm Going back to your question, I operate one site about AdSense that has no AdSense ads on it at all - it is called www.adsenseshop.com and it is a one-stop shop for AdSense related products and services. I would lose money if I plastered AdSense ads on that site so I don't and this is another mistake I see people making.
Let's talk about your site: http://www.factsaboutadsense.com How did you go about building it? What tools and resources have you used to create it?
I built FactsAboutAdSense.com using Microsoft FrontPage and I now wish I hadn't because the maintenance side is becoming a nuisance. I tend to add several pages a week to this site which brings with it its own problems. For example, I am not good at updating my site map even though I know that a well constructed site map can increase the number of pages a typical visitor has a look at and hence the number of AdSense ads they look at and click. I've also not yet put the time into learning enough about Style sheets and so the process of making style changes is very burdensome. I have, however, created a number of different template pages now and so when I add another page, I simply select the template I want and edit it. I do use Style sheets a little but I know that they have a 35 lot more power to offer than I am currently exploiting.
What is the 'SECRET' formula for bringing quality traffic to the Site above?
Undoubtedly the best way to drive quality targeted traffic to your site is to motivate others to send targeted traffic to you. I regard quality traffic in my case as people who are going to be interested in the content of my site and who, therefore, are going to be interested in the AdSense ads on it too. One highly effective way is to offer a product for sale that you pay commission on. I do this with my book The Definitive Guide to Google AdSense. I have built up an army of affiliates who regularly send me traffic that is interested in AdSense and when one of those visitors buys my book, I pay the affiliate who sent me the contact around $30. I also invite all purchasers of my book to become affiliates as well which means that I can potentially profit from sales in two ways: I get paid and I recruit a new affiliate. The numbers also work out such that someone only needs to sell 2 copies of my book to recover virtually all their original purchase costs.
36
Now people who click a link that takes them to my site are clearly
going to be interested in AdSense otherwise they wouldn't click so virtually all that traffic is very targeted. But I also make good use of an autoresponder sequence too which amplifies the benefit of that traffic. What I do is invite new visitors to sign up for a free training course that I provide. Of course a lot of people don't do this because they are fearful of spam but people who are keen to learn do sign up and its safe to do so because they can always unsubscribe any time they want with a single click. This builds me a list of people who I know are interested in AdSense and I use my autoresponder series to invite repeat visits to my site. For example, during my course I actually discuss the merits of using autoresponders to build your site traffic and I include a link to a web page about the autoresponder I use. This page has AdSense ads for autoresponders on it and they get clicked. The other factor to bear in mind is that when someone clicks on an AdSense ad they leave your site and if you don't know who they are you can never be sure to attract their attention again. They might never come by your site in the future and so you will never earn any more AdSense income from them ever. But if you have already captured their contact details with your autoresponder you can remind them about your site any time you like which means you have a realistic chance of getting them to click on more than one ad on your site over time. And of course the other thing you can do is create new web pages from time to time, as I do, that discuss new aspects of the internet. Make the pages interesting to get the click through and relevant to stop unsubscriptions and you can generate sudden traffic surges to a specific page. Provided you've set up AdSense on that page and checked that the ads are relevant, you can virtually guarantee a sudden surge in AdSense clicks. I also use PPC advertising, specifically Google AdWords. These virtually guarantee traffic to my site but I don't expect to earn more from these visitors than I pay to get them to make their first visit. Instead, I know what percentage sign up for my autoresponder series and I know what I make from an average visitor over time from AdSense. This gives me multiple chances to recover my advertising costs and I know that I make more than I pay out in advertising. You can in fact make more than you pay out by using obscure keywords in your AdWords campaigns that drive people to pages with only high paying AdSense ads on them. This process is called 37 AdWords/AdSense arbitrage but it is hard to do if you are looking
to get high traffic volumes. If you are prepared to work hundreds of niche keywords it's not too difficult. I did once purchase traffic from a provider who guaranteed 10,000 hits a month for a few dollars. My site registered the extra traffic but I don't think it was genuine. In other words I think it was computer generated and a complete waste of time and money. Trouble is you never know these things until you've tried them.
How many unique visitors do you get to your http://www.factsaboutadsense.com site per day and where do they mainly came from?
The traffic I get varies and has large peaks when I send out an email to my subscribers. You can see these on the Alexa traffic graphs. But background volumes have also been growing and I'm now getting around 500 unique visitors a day who visit over 1,100 pages a day. It's easy to forget what these numbers mean and I think it helps to treat your visitors as if they were coming to a shop you opened for 8 hours a day. So, 500 unique visitors a day represents 62 people coming into my shop every hour. And this goes on 7 days a week. Of course, I can ramp this level up dramatically by sending out an email too! The traffic mainly comes from my affiliates, my PPC advertising on Google and from my autoresponder series. I'm also getting a growing amount of free targeted traffic from the search engines too.
How do you go about optimizing your site for Google and other Search Engines?
Frankly I've done very little in this area and one area where I've been very weak is in getting any PageRank benefit from affiliates linking to my site. This is because at the moment I mainly use Clickbank as my affiliate management program. If you use Clickbank, the links from affiliate sites all point to Clickbank and not your own site so I am wasting a valuable resource here. Sorting this out is on my to do list! However, as I add to the content of my site, I've noticed that more and more people are finding it via natural search. Of course this 38 sort of traffic is excellent – targeted and free – and I need to get
more of it. I suspect that the best way I can do this is to extend my site map so that the search engines get to know more about the content of my site. And of course, I can use the blog and ping method to make sure I get pages noticed fast. I will probably be experimenting with www.myblogzilla.com soon too – a system that let's you generate unique intelligent content on lots of different sites that can then point back to your own.
How do you go about converting your http://www.factsaboutadsense.com Site traffic into more AdSense Income?
Conversion in this context is simply the process of getting more clicks. I can't tell you what click through rate I achieve because I am not allowed to under the Google Terms and Conditions but I'm pleased with it. I get a high click through rate by writing fairly specific pages so that the ads are well targeted. I also write copy that generates interest in the ads that are likely to appear on the page. In general, the more specific the content is to the ads, the more likely you are to get clicks. You can treat this as an iterative process to a degree – you create a page, see what ads appear on it and then fine tune your copy to suit. The position of ads and the layout I use also can have a big impact on click through rates and earnings and boosting this boils down to a game of statistics. You need to monitor what works best over a realistically large number of visits so that you have, say, 50 clicks from a particular page. If you are getting a 5% click through rate this will be from 1,000 page views. Then you make some layout changes and see if you can improve on this figure and adopt the strategy that nature uses: survival of the fittest. Stick with the layout that is most profitable and when you have the time, try something else and see if you can beat that. There are general theories about the best layouts for clicks but it will vary across different websites because each website has a different audience and different audiences inevitably behave in different ways. Often it turns out that “disguising” ads as normal navigation links works well because people don't realize they are ads before they click. This is one reason why it usually pays to make sure your ads match the color scheme of your site.
39
However, if you rotate the color of ads, something that you can do automatically using your AdSense control panel, you can sometimes get higher click through rates if you get repeat visitors. I also try to make sure that I encourage people to visit these pages with the copy I write. Specifically, I use links on my site that get people to click on them. You see, one of the worst types of links you can put on your site are those that say things like “next page” or whatever. Why would anyone particularly want to click a link that says “next page”? What you need to use are phrases like “10 classic AdSense errors and how to avoid them”. I mean, who wouldn't click on a link that said that? If they click, they visit another page on my site where I stand a good chance of getting a click. Having said all that, it can pay to use lousy links or even no links at all so that the visitors best option when trying to get away from a page is to click on an ad. Other people also use graphics to highlight ads. You are not allowed to draw attention to AdSense ads using words, but subtle graphics can help. I've seen one example where an points to ads and it definitely draws them to your attention probably increases click through rates. really some arrow which
Could you share some profit-pulling TIPS our readers can instantly use to maximize their AdSense Income (24 hours)?
24 hours to boost your AdSense income! That's an interesting challenge. With an autoresponder you can simply send out an email and invite visits to pages with AdSense ads on them and that virtually guarantees success. If you haven't got that capability, my gut reaction would be to have a quick look over your site to see if you can get more page visits per person by using better link wording. Actions like this can pay dividends for years to come. But I'd seriously consider starting up one or several blogs too. There are some excellent tools for doing this now in such a way that you can leverage the power of computers to amplify your efforts: you create lots of blogs all with AdSense code, write one article and feed 40 it automatically into all your blogs in such a way that each is different
but intelligible and makes sense. I mentioned www.myblogzilla.com before and it can help you do all this stuff fast. You then have new content that the search engines love and in no time you'll get free traffic equals free clicks. Hey, don't forget this works for non-AdSense sites too. There's no reason why you can't use this technique to drive traffic to an affiliate sales site as well.
If you'd have to build a Web Site from scratch to generate AdSense Income on Autopilot, how would you do it in 30 days or less?
I'd scan through a list of high paying keywords and find a topic I knew something about first that was generating valuable clicks. Then I'd create some content around that topic, probably using Xsite Pro – a good web site building tool that makes it easy to incorporate AdSense in your pages. A good way to generate content is to jot down 10 questions that people might want to ask about it and then write 10 separate answers, dedicating one page to each answer. I'd probably host this site using GoDaddy.com because they are cheap and if I didn't already have a relevant domain name, I'd buy one there too. Finally I'd set up a blog also about the same topic and write some postings daily for a few days that linked back to the main site and I'd use pingomatic.com to get my blog noticed by the search engines.
41
This should start to generate some free search traffic. I'd then identify a few forums related to my topic and post some comments on them making sure I included a signature that advertised my site and gave people a reason to visit it. Actually, I might turn all this on its head now and start with blogging. There's no doubt that blogging is big AdSense business. And you can get going without spending any money at all if you use a free blog from blogger.com. I'd start with knowing what valuable topics exist out there and some are quite surprising. Everyone knows about mesothelioma and so on, but there are other topics that are very profitable where there is not so much competition for traffic. Funny how most things on the internet boil down to keyword value. You can get a free list of valuable keywords from my website page – www.factsaboutadsense.com/whatisadsense.htm
How do you plan to increase your AdSense income in the next 90 days? Are you developing NEW Sites or adding more content to the ones you already have?
42
I'm probably going to move strongly into blogs. I've been doing some blog experiments recently, including setting up blogs to which postings get made automatically. My sense is that blogs are going to carry on being popular with the search engines for a while yet and that I would be foolish not to exploit the opportunity this creates for getting free targeted traffic. Given that sites like blogger.com let you create free blogs with AdSense in them, you can start with literally no costs so any money you make is profit. I'm also going to be working on that Site map I refer to elsewhere! And I'm always adding new content too.
What do you think are Adsense BEST keept Secrets?
Strangely enough, I think one of the best kept secrets about AdSense is that it exists and works at all. I am amazed at how few people have heard of it and yet it offers virtually anyone the opportunity to create a simple, easy to manage private automatic income stream that is backed by Google. Beyond that, I don't think people realize the difference in relative values of certain clicks. Even if you increase your average click value by 5c – something that is easy to do if you create the right content – it's another $1800 a year if you are getting 100 clicks a day.
What do you see as the NEXT big trend in AdSense money-making?
Looking ahead, I think we are going to see a move away from directory sites that currently can rank high in search engines and I think the search engines are also going to start penalizing sites with artificial content in them. So in that respect I think a degree of quality assurance will be taking place in the market which, whilst painful for some, is probably best for the long term future of AdSense. We should never forget that for AdSense to remain a viable way of generating income from websites, that form of advertising must continue to deliver good value to AdWords advertisers. This is one reason why I get tired of seeing how many people do searches for phrases like “adsense click software” or “how to cheat adsense”. But in terms of making money, I think the thing that will become 43 apparent in hindsight is that AdSense is fostering a massive
increase in content-rich websites that actually deliver value to their visitors. So the trend is really going to be the increase in the number of sites that qualify for and use AdSense and the richness of the information these sites provide. This has to be a good thing. We are already seeing this in the blogosphere where a huge number of new blogs are being created– I think it is something like once every 7 seconds a new blog is created. With AdSense as an effective way of monetizing these blogs, we are already seeing an information explosion here. In fact I know of some pretty interesting tools that are going to be launched soon that will enable bloggers to manage literally hundreds of blogs at a time and you don't need to be making much money from each blog to turn one hundred blogs into a decent income. So the trend is probably going to be towards building AdSense income from multiple sites and or blogs and alongside that process, new tools will come along that make this process feasible for a large number of people.
What AdSense-related freebies can our readers discover on the Internet to boost their income?
I think one of the best has to be a free blog into which you can paste your AdSense code. www.Blogger.com lets you do this although it can be hard to get rid of AdSense ads related to blogging and instead get ads related to your content. As I mentioned, you can get a free valuable keyword list from www.factsaboutadsense.com/whatisadsense.htm But best of all I would recommend people visit all AdSense information sites and sign up for newsletters because you can learn a lot that way in your own time. I'd also check out www.webmasterworld.com for AdSense news. There's a powerful keyword research tool as well now called The Dowser and you can download a free copy here www.factsaboutadsense.com/thedowser.htm And don't forget Google's own AdSense Preview tool which shows you what ads you are likely to get on your pages. https://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/topic.py?topic=160 Oh, and I use the free Google Alerts facility to monitor what is
44
going on around the web. http://www.google.com/alerts I guess my favorite really has to be the free blogs now – there's nothing like an opportunity to make money that doesn't require you to invest in anything upfront to get going.
What final words of wisdom would you like to pass on to everyone who is reading this eBook?
If you haven't started with AdSense, start now. If you have started, do some sensible testing to see where you are making the most money and then think through what you can do to expand in that area. Create a product if you can that will bring you free traffic via an affiliate program and get that autoresponder set up. It will do wonders for your AdSense income AND your business if you use your site for commerce too.

AdSense Success Story # 3 – Iszuddin Ismail
“The Secret Adsense Placements Technique for Getting a 10% to 20% Click Through Rate (CTR)”
by Iszuddin Ismail (aka Kidino) http://www.MoneyClicking.net
I don’t want to waste your time with things that you already know. Or if you don’t know much, you can read the optimization technique that you can find at Adsense’s website. Those are the basic things that you should know, and Adsense even tell you the hot areas where you can place your Adsense. https://google.com/adsense/tips This report will go beyond that. This report is to show you some of the many ways that you can do for better Adsense placements. These are proven strategies (at least on my websites) to give better CTR. In some cases, I even get CTR of 10% to 20%. And in most cases, I would normally get a CTR of above 5%. Your case may be different. You may get slightly lower result, or maybe even better. Those will depend on how well you implement these strategies and how well targeted your web visitors are. In any way, I urge you to try them out. With the daily real-time earning report, you can know how good or how bad a placement strategy is. If it works, keep them. If it doesn’t, change.
46
My Secret Philosophy … Before going into detail, let me just give my secret philosophy to Adsense placement for high CTR. And later, I will show you some examples. In general, people say that you need to blend your ads with the content. Partly true but I think it’s more accurate if you say that you need to blend the ad to your website. It’s not just the content. I am sure that your website has a theme, a few series of colors and things that like. When people see each components of your website, they will know that it’s a part of your website. For example, your header is green, and so is your sidebars, and blocks of it. People straight away know that your sidebar is a part of YOUR website, and not some outside component. And people have no problem clicking on things that they think you personally coded and put there. But if they consciously know that it’s an ad, they might hesitate. Why? – Because people don’t like to be sold to. Knowing this simple strategy, you can either make the Adsense to look a lot more like your website, or you just choose to make your website more like Adsense. Anyway would work. Strategy #1 – Ad Links as a Menu This is a simple strategy. I use it to make my website a lot more like Adsense rather than the other way around. You must know by now that Adsense offers not only those little boxes with text ads in them, but they also have these little-little words. These are Ad Links. When people click on them, Google will show a few ads from Adword. This is a two-step process. You may think that this may reduce your earning – my experiment proved otherwise. Many times, my Ad Links, done the right way, is more profitable than the normal ad boxes. How do I do it? Just look at the example below.
47
What I do is make my menu to use the exact same font size and type that Adsense are using for their Ad Links. And then, I blend my menu to the Adsense. One look, people will see my menus and not some ads by Adsense. I only use Ad Links with 4 keywords in them. Ad Links with four keywords uses bigger font size and looks a lot more like a menu. Ad Links with 5 keywords are just too small to be menu. Then I use the Arial at 9pt font size for my original menu. Menu categories have to be in bold. And make the border color blend to the background of your website. All that should do it. At the end of this report, I will tell you where you can get the codes to each and every one of these Adsense placement strategies. Strategy #2 – Wide Skyscraper as Sidebar It’s normal to have a sidebar on a website and people expected it. This is something that we can use. I use this strategy on my low traffic content sites. If you really get targeted traffic to that, you may even beat your high traffic website which has 10 times more traffic. This is true because I get very high CTR with this strategy – sometimes even 20 to 30 percent. The first part of this strategy is to have a one color top bar. I make a bar to fill in some navigation links. And the background color, I use brown. Then you can put your Adsense using the wide skyscraper format on the right side. This wide sky scrapper needs to have the same border color as the header bar.
48
You may start to ask – why the wide skyscraper? Well, I’ve tried and the wide skyscraper is the only that draws enough attention for people to click on it. You can also put in some kind of small box that also looks like Adsense on top of the Adsense skyscraper. You can put a search box in there, or maybe some info on latest articles or something like that. That will fool the eyes even more. Once they see your normal box and registers that this format of box is your own, they will also tend to see the rest of the boxes that looks the same way as your own. And remember, your box must have the same width as the wide skyscraper – 160 pixels. The code to this is very simple. You can just use a table for this. I use a table that has two columns. Of course on the first row, I merge the cells together to make the top bar. You may want to put in some cellpadding values to it so that content to stick to the edge of that cell. As for your additional boxes, which are optional, you may need to use some CSS to make the thin line borders. Using CSS will give you a cleaner code. Again, at the end of this report is the information on how you can get sample codes.
49
Strategy #3 – Adsense over Image This one is rather tricky. I use CSS coding for this one. Just look at the example below.
But it does look cool, right? What happening this is where I have an image as the background, and then I put Adsense on top of it. If you look at the background image, it has little-little boxes with curved corners. And I make my Adsense too in a box with curved corners. Again, that is another way to fool the eyes and the mind from thinking that your Adsense is an outside component. Obviously you can’t use this strategy on every page. You can only use this on your front page or maybe main category pages. And if you use it on main category pages, try to have different background image for each category. I do know that a friend of mine is using this strategy as a splash page on his website. It’s working very well for him. Using this strategy, you still need to have some text content on that page. This will help you with your search engine optimization and also the selection on ads that will appear on your Adsense. Even if you need to limit your content, please do have at least ONE paragraph of content on that page.
50
Strategy # 4 – Adsense as Header Here’s another way that you can really increase CTR. I like this because it will be the first they see. This type of strategy don’t really camouflages Adsense with your website them, but they work. To make this work, I would recommend using the Leader board ad format. And then also make your website to have the same width as the Adsense. As for color, you can use any color that you think is suitable. You may want to use your content to decide on the color that you want to use.
The rest of the website may need to use that same color theme. Have a look at the example below. Strategy #5 – Highlighting With this strategy, we are kind of highlighting Adsense. I like to use this when I have content that I want to display in columns. And in each column, I would put in a little one ad Adsense unit. You get what I mean with the image below.
51
What you see above is that I have three columns and in each of those columns, you can see that I have one Adsense unit. And above those Adsense units, you can see that I have an image for each of them. That is how you highlight your Adsense. With the image, you are drawing attention to that area, and people just can’t miss the Adsense. But I have to remind of something. You can only display three Adsense units on a page. When you are done with the example above, you CANNOT put anymore Adsense unit on that page. Words of Caution I believe there are more creative ways to present the Adsense on your website. What I’ve shown you are just some examples. Be crazy and don’t be afraid to experiment. But remember, what ever you do, always comply with the terms and conditions of Adsense. For example, you can NEVER ask you visitors to click on your ads. Sentences like “Please click on the ads” or “Click here” or something like that can get your Adsense account terminated. Getting the Codes There you go. I have presented to you five powerful Adsense placement strategies that may increase your CTR from the normal 1% to 2% to even an extraordinary 20%. These techniques have worked for me. As for your case, give it a try and experiment with them.
52
If you would like to receive the codes to the example mentioned above, I have created a dedicated web page for it. Visit my website, http://moneyclicking.net/adsense-codes to download the codes.

LOSING Pay-Per„How I Went From LOSING Money Using Pay-Per-Click Arbitrage To Making Over $900 Per Year Per Site”
In the Internet marketing world, there are always the latest fads and trends and the newest bells and whistles. From e-books to affiliates, the opportunities to make money online seem endless. Every time you learn a new method to making money online, it seems another guru comes out of the woodwork and says everything you just learned is wrong and that there is a newer, better, faster way to make money. The latest buzz in Internet marketing is making money via Google Adsense™. Anytime I come across a new opportunity I run through these questions: • Is this a long-term income opportunity and not just another trend? • Can I really make money doing this? If so how much? • Can I automate this business, to minimize my time spent working in it? • Can I duplicate this opportunity to create multiple streams of revenue? So far, my research proves that the answer to all these questions is yes. This is dependent, however, on the quality of the sites you build. Many people are advocating using an “arbitrage” method, where you buy cheap traffic to your site in the hopes of selling more expensive advertising to visitors once they get to your site. Can you make money doing this? Once again that depends. My tests show that if you’re just building single page sites or low value sites then you can’t really make money doing this. However, if you take the time to build a good quality site, with useful information, you can make money using an arbitrage method. The longer-term goal is to eventually have your site listed well in the search engines and get traffic without needing to pay for it, although a combination of both free 55 and paid traffic can be beneficial.
In this section I’m going to go through an actual case study of a site I use to earn income from Google Adsense™. I’ll explain how I set the site up, maintain it, and update it. I will also discuss some various tests I’ve conducted to increase my revenue. Let’s go ahead and look at the homepage for this site: www.New-Acne-Information.com
This is obviously a site related to acne. This brings us to our first discussion…
How I Pick Niches It seems there are many opinions on how to pick a topic for a site. People write courses on keyword research, researching bid prices, ask prices, etc. Many will advocate spending hours and hours of research. My take on that… I hate research. If I wanted to spend my life doing research, I would have gone for a Ph.D. I’m not saying that you don’t need to do research to find a niche; I’m just saying you don’t need to spend your life doing it. Most of the niches you want to be in are already obvious. How did I pick acne? That was pretty simple, it’s a health / appearance related condition that people want information on to solve. Others 56 that come to mind are cellulite, diabetes, arthritis, …, the list goes on and on.
Take a trip to the local bookstore and see what books are in the top ten list: health, finance, and real estate always seem to be up there. Look at the magazines. Magazines about money, cats, dogs, travel, golf… My point is that there are endless topics you can find to create websites around. Don’t kill yourself trying to research the perfect niche. So we’ve identified a site we want to focus on, in this case acne. Now it’s time to build a site. Let’s talk about the tools to get the job done.
Building A Site / Template
When it comes to building a site, I build a template using an HTML editing program. Once that template is built, I simply use that template to upload articles and other parts of the site. I generally will spend a few hours to build a single template. There are many programs out there that will provide pre-built templates, but I prefer to make my own. It allows me the freedom to make the page and put key items exactly where I want them.
Choosing A Domain Name Picking a domain name is pretty straightforward. I pick a domain name related to the topic. While the exact domain name you want may (most likely) be taken, there are many variations you can use. For instance, with this site, the domain I originally wanted (AcneInformation.com) was already taken, so I choose New-AcneInformation.com. Other choices could have been Acne411.com, MyAcneInformation.com, Free-Acne-Information.com, Your-AcneInformation.com…. you get the point.
Maximize Your Hosting This is an important point I wanted to touch on, which may seem obvious to some. It amazes me at all the different hosting 57 companies out there that still try to gouge the unknowing. One hosting company will charge $15 a month to host one website, and
only allow a small amount of traffic to the site before charging outrageous bandwidth fees (and that’s if you’re lucky… some will just shut your site down if you exceed the bandwidth). Meanwhile another hosting company will charge the same price and allow you to host a large number (some even allow you to host unlimited) of sites with all the bandwidth you’ll ever need. For what we’re doing, we want a hosting company that fits the description of the later, not former. Be sure that your hosting company allows you to host a large number of domains with sufficient bandwidth. I wouldn’t spend more than $30 a month for this. Also, you want a hosting company that has Cpanel, Fantastico, and AW Stats. Even if you’re not sure what these mean now, just trust me on this. The importance of this is the ability to track your traffic statistics and the ability to easily use programs such as WordPress (this is a blogging program; blogging will be one of the strategies you use to get listed in the search engines.)
That is a basic summary of getting a site up and running. Now let’s talk about the fun part.
Show Me The Money! Here is the fun part, how to make money from these sites. There are many ways to monetize a site, affiliate programs, selling your own products, selling advertising, etc. However, for the purposes of this discussion, we will focus on earning income from Google Adsense™. There is another screen shot of the homepage on the next page. Before looking at it, I want you to notice a few things. There are three important things which all appear “above the fold”. 1. There is a block of adsense ads. 2. There is a link to an articles page. 3. There is an opt-in form at the top of the page.
58
Okay, now that we saw that, let’s take a look at a sample article page. Before we do that, I want to point something out. Earlier on, I asked the question: Is this a long-term income opportunity? I also asked, Can I make money doing this? The answer on that depends on how seriously you treat this business and on the quality of the content you provide. There are a lot of ebooks floating around and guru’s talking about using an “Arbitrage” strategy to profit from Google Adsense™. Some advocate just putting up a single article page with some Adsense ads on it. Then purchasing Adwords traffic at a low price per click. The concept is that someone will pay 5 cents to click on your ad (costing you 5 cents), get to your article, and then click on an ad on your site (paying you more than 5 cents). You profit from the difference. My experience is that this is not a viable or reliable method to generating income online. Personally, when I take the time to build a large, useful site, the income generated is much greater. Much of this income comes from repeat visitors, I’ll talk more about that in a bit. Let’s take a look at a screen shot of the article index page, and also an actual article page. The first shot is what the visitor will see above the fold, the second shot is what the user sees when he or she scrolls down the page.
59
The next shot below shows an actual article page, once the user selects on an article to view:
60
Notice that there is a pattern throughout the entire site. The template is basically the same. There is always an option to opt-in above the fold and a large block of Google ads above the fold. Testing shows that a large block of adsense ads above the fold is one the best places to achieve a high click-through rate. This is confirmed straight from the horse’s mouth, Google. Finally, let’s take a look at the bottom of the site. The bottom of the website is a very important section in my opinion. This particular screen shot is from the end of an article page.
61
The three areas I highlighted: 1. Opt-in form (does this surprise you?) 2. Google Search Box (I have mixed opinions about this) 3. Google Ads running down left hand side (ads are always visible) After a website visitor is finished reading through a webpage, they generally have a few options. They could hit their back button and continue going through the site they are searching. They could type in a new site domain name to search (perhaps google.com to get back to the Google search page and conduct a new search). Or they could just close out the window. In my opinion, before they leave that page, this is a good opportunity to get a different response, one that is favorable to us. Usually if they have read an entire article on the site, and haven’t clicked on any of the links above the fold, or down the side of the webpage, they’re not going to do it if you placed ads at the bottom of the page. Also, currently you can place three (3) sets of ads on the webpage. The first, and best is to place one block above the fold. I place the other two down the left hand side of the site. This way, once again, there are ads being displayed the entire time the visitor is scrolling down the page, reading the article. That is why, in my opinion, the best use of the real estate at the bottom of your page, before the visitor leaves is to either get them to opt-in and/or conduct a new Google search through your Google search bar. A quick note about the Google search bar: a lot of marketers don’t like using this. In terms of revenue, my tests show that you’re not going to make a lot of money with this. But a little of something is better than 100% of nothing. If you do decide to use a Google search box, I would only put it at the bottom of the page, as a last option for the visitor. If you study the way the entire site is setup, from top to bottom, you’ll notice that the visitor has these 5 options: 1. Opt-in at top of page 2. Click Google ad at top of page 3. Click Google ads (2 sets being shown) on side of page while 62 scrolling and reading article
4. Opt-in at bottom of page 5. Last option is to conduct another search using Google search box It’s not surprise that these options are in order of most profitable / desirable. Look at it this way; at the end of the page, the visitor is leaving the site. You minus well try to get their info or profit from their next search. I have no external links leaving that site that are not profitable.
How to Get Traffic When it comes to getting traffic I use three methods. Search engine traffic from Google, search Engine Traffic from Yahoo!, and Pay Per Click traffic from Google Adwords. I have experimented with using Yahoo! Search Marketing, and the results were less than spectacular. I don’t concern myself with search engines other than Google or Yahoo!. Initially when I first set up a website, I will use Google Adwords to drive traffic to the site. While I am doing this I am earning income through an “arbitrage” method. As I said earlier, this can be profitable if you’re using a site with lots of good content. Not just a single article site. Also, during this time I am capturing opt-in information. This is the time period that I am waiting for my sites to be indexed by Google and Yahoo!. I want to quickly show you my experience using the arbitrage method with a junky, single page site versus a good quality content site. Here is a screen shot of my Google Adsense earnings from the month of August 2005. Make sure you’re sitting down for this:
63
That’s not the best (or worst?) part. Remember, I’m using the arbitrage method. So I was paying for this traffic. How much you ask? Let’s just say it was more than $3.99. Much more. I was losing money using this method! Needless to say, I also had a horrible click-through rate. Once again, I’m not saying you can’t make money using single page, junk content sites. I’m just saying that my experience using that method has been negative. Okay, back to what does work: Getting indexed in Yahoo! seems to be easier than getting indexed in Google. My strategy for getting indexed in Yahoo! is to set up a blog related to the topic and post to the blog, linking back to the main site. I also set up a MyYahoo! account and run an RSS feed from the blog to the MyYahoo! site. Using this strategy I’ve had sites indexed in Yahoo! in as little as one day. http://my.yahoo.com Once my traffic from the search engines increases, I’ll cut back on advertising with Adwords, and profitability will increase.
The Importance Of Capturing Information
64
In my opinion, the most important thing you can do is capture the information of your visitors. This allows you to earn recurring income from the same visitors. I would rather have someone come to my website and give me their name and email address and leave without clicking on an ad, rather than visiting, clicking on an ad, and leaving, never to return. Once someone gives you their information, you can notify them every time your site is updated. Let them know when you put new articles up, make them offers to products or affiliate products that may be of interest to them. So, is this concept profitable? Does it work? Let’s take a look at the numbers:
As you can see, this site earned $75.78 for the month of September 2005. That is not bad considering I only spent a few hours setting it up. Now I know that $75.78 isn’t going to set the world on fire, but it is important, because it helps us answer the most important question that was asked of this business model in the beginning of the report: Can I duplicate this opportunity to create multiple streams of revenue? The answer to that question, of course, is yes. We can move on 65 to another niche, repeat the entire process, and build up multiple
streams of income. $75.76 a month translates to over $900 per year. And this site is just in its infancy. This is how I went from losing money to making over $900 per year, per website. From this point on it’s just a numbers game, build 20, 50, 100 sites or more. Or you can take a small amount of sites and add additional ways to monetize them (create your own information products, sell affiliate products, sell physical goods, etc.) This is one of my favorite ways to make money on the Internet. And it’s a concept that is here to stay. Providing information is the very core of what the Internet is all about. We live in the “Information Age”, and the Internet is the primary medium through which people search for and obtain that information. Why not provide some of that information and make some money along the way? The information I provided here is just the tip of the iceberg. AdSense Success Story # 5 – Adriana Copaceanu
Adriana Copaceanu is the webmaster who all webmasters want to be. She started out with a small niche site. She didn’t have any design skills, much less did she know what search engine optimization was. Over the past five years, however, that has changed. Her once small site is now large, enjoys high traffic, and a CTR that brings over $1000 most months. She talks about her site below, as well as how she built it into what it is today: “I am going to review the first site I created for this project: it’s a gift basket website. In December 2004 I had an average of 2400 visitors a day. In July this year I averaged 900 visitors a day, and this month I am only averaging about 450 visitors a day.
67
I started this site in October 2000, at the same time I started my gift basket business. I registered the domain with register.com (since then, I found out that www.godaddy.com is much more economical, so I’ve been getting my domains from them for my latest websites). I hosted the site through a host that had many other gift basket designers’ sites, and it was inexpensive. Unfortunately, my site was down much of the time, and had to look for another host. I eventually settled on my current host, Third Sphere ( http://giftsnxx.thirdsphereplus.com ) At the time I started this gift basket business, I only wanted to design gift baskets, and didn’t know anything about the workings of a good website. So, I hired a company to do my design (I gave them very specific instructions about the way I wanted it to look), and in about a week I had a 3 page website, that cost me $500. I had no idea how to update my pages, how to add pictures, or how to optimize it for the search engines. So, I purchased Front Page, and started a long process of learning. I eventually became very proficient in updating my site, and now realized that I needed visitors to have any sales. I researched on the web how to optimize my site, and eventually 68 learned enough about how to bring potential customers to my site.
Not long after that, I learned about a couple of new ways to monetize my site: affiliate marketing, and Google AdSense. I learned as much as I could about both, and soon implemented them on my site: first AdSense in August of 2003, and then affiliate marketing sometime in the beginning of 2004. At first, AdSense only generate a few pennies a day, but as I learned more about how to implement it, it grew to a few dollars a day, and then a lot more. How I picked my niche is a long story, but here is the short version: I was living in San Jose, CA at the time, and even though I had an awesome job, I was missing quality time with my kids. So, I started looking for something I can do from home, while my kids were in school, which would allow me to be there when they came home form school. I researched on the web for about 9 months, and eventually decided that I wanted to design gift baskets. I didn’t know about AdSense at the time (I don’t think it was even out then), so I have not done any keyword research. I now know that keyword research is one of the most important steps of a successful website. I have had a newsletter for this website since 2001, and I started archiving it in April 2002, getting even more information pages for my site. I also constantly write articles related to my industry: I post some on my site, and other times I post to article banks, where other webmasters can use them if they give the proper credit: this is a great way to gain expert status in your industry. Sometimes is not so easy to come up with the right content, but it’s always worth taking time to write useful information. I now have 2 AdSense blocks on almost every page of my site: one at the top, and one at the bottom. I have tried many color combinations, block sizes, position on the page, etc. I don’t use any other ads on my pages, but I do have affiliate links (I sell other people’s items). For me, the ads best performed when I blended than nicely in the website: I made the background and border the same color as my site’s background, and then tried different colors for the title, text, and URL. At this time I have a navy color for my title, black for my text, and light grey for my URL, and this seems to have the best results. This doesn’t mean that I will never change the look/position of my ads. Every once in a while, I change something and track to see what happens, then I either change it back if it didn’t work, or leave it for a while, if my CTR improved.
69
My average daily income varies with the position I have in the search engines. For example, last December, I had a very good SE position for the term “gift basket” (I was #11 out of several millions websites), and averaged about $60/day.
In July of this year, I averaged about $39/day, and this month I’ve been lower, at about $20/day. There are 2 reasons for the decrease in my AdSense income this summer: first, because of Google algorithm changes, my site no longer holds those excellent positions for my keywords, and also, summer months are slow months for the gift industry.
70
With that said, I suggest you don’t only create one site: it could lose the rankings at any time and with it you could lose your income. Also, having more than one site (in more than one industry), you avoid decreasing income at the end of the season. While one site is doing better during December, you should have another that does well in the summer months.” Talking with this woman, it’s hard to believe she isn’t a professional SEO. There’s so much to learn from her. The Q&A below with Adriana reveals a webmaster who understands her traffic and has mastered AdSense. Q&A with Adriana If your site has decreased in traffic and your AdSense income is lower, how do you plan to raise it again? What are your strategies? I am always building new sites, so in time, traffic/income will increase. I am also always writing new articles related to my field. And again, the traffic always decreases in the summer for this site, because of the nature of the gift business. In the last few days I’ve seen small increases in traffic, and will much more in October, when people start thinking of buying holiday gifts. One other thing: sometimes I don’t do anything; I just wait for Google to settle and my traffic gets back to normal levels in 1-2 months. You said you track your AdSense. How exactly are you doing this, and how do you TEST to see which colors, ads, etc. work best? I track my AdSense through the channels offered by Google, and test by changing the color/position, etc., and watching what happens to the CTR (usually for about a week): I only make one change at the time so that I don’t get confused which change made
71
the difference.
You have plenty of articles on your site. Are they original? Have you written them yourself? Most of the articles on this site are written by me, but I also use other people's articles when needed, or when I like them very much (quality allways attracts me)
I noticed most of your article pages have PR 3 in Google. Are you using SEO in your articles? How come you have such a nice PR? Yes, I use SEO for the entire site. First of all, I have a very nice navigation throughout the site, and then, some of the articles I wrote, have a link to a specific article page on my site (in the bio at the end of the article).
How well is your traffic/newsletter subscription conversion rate doing? Not very well. I actually didn’t publish or the last 3 months, but plan to restart in October, when people are more in the mood to buy gifts. Then again, staying in front of my subscribers on a monthly basis, helps them remember to visit my site for all their gift giving needs.
72
Which are your most visited pages and why do you think they are?
My most visited page is my home page, because it ranks well for many key phrases. From there, people go to different parts of the site for the specific thing they are looking for.
I just noticed on Google that 195 sites link back to your site. How's your link popularity been achieved so far? The site has many more than what Google shows. Yahoo shows over 3000 links pointing to my site. I achieved those links by exchanging with other sites who have the same target audience as my site, and of course, as I mentioned before, from articles others use and link back to my site.
73
What strategies are you using to get back links to your site and how important it is for your SEO ?
74
Well the answer is in the question above: really, most of what I do now is write good articles that people want to use. In the beginning I used to look for link partners daily, and I still do, but a lot less than in the beginning. And back links are very important to SEO. And so is a knowledgeable webmaster who understands the mechanics of SEO, traffic, and AdSense. While a moderate CTR may come naturally with a successful site, learning all you can and mastering SEO and AdSense increases your revenue. Adriana is proof!

AdSense Success Story # 6 – Sarah Smiley
There are thousands of sites out there that represent individual authors. Except for the few and proud that boast of best selling novels, most enjoy only moderate traffic. There’s a simple reason for this. With just one subject on a site and information about only one product, there aren’t many ways to create a broad niche and generate more traffic. Of course, there are always exceptions. Author and syndicated columnist Sarah Smiley’s site is just one of those. She found ways to broaden her niche, to take what she wrote about (the life of a military wife) and make it a resource and popular place for all military wives to connect. Just like AdSense, Sarah provided her website visitors with information that would appeal to them. The site traffic grew by itself in the early days, but Sarah was the force behind it by caring about her visitors and giving them exactly what they were looking for. Sarah writes a syndicated column about the lives of military wives. Although the audience may seem limited to some, she has proven that quality content and being able to broaden your niche are everything.
Sarah, how did you start your site, and why?
I am the author of a syndicated newspaper column called "Shore Duty. My website www.SarahSmiley.com eventually grew out of a need to connect with readers across the country. Initially, however, I only started SarahSmiley.com to be an "online business
76 card" for my column and to solicit editors. My high search rankings
and position coincidentally caused various readers and the general public to stumble across SarahSmiley.com, and as the hits and requests grew, so did my site, taking it from a basic one with contact information and my portfolio, to a portal with nearly 100 pages of information and resources for military families.
When did you start the site? I started the site Jan 2004, I think. Some time around then, at least. Expanding targeted traffic is essential to SEO. So is a professional design. It doesn’t take a pricey website designer or thousands of dollars for either. It just takes a little research and the willingness to take the time.
77
Did you build the site yourself or have someone build it?
After convincing my frugal husband to buy me FrontPage, I taught myself--using online resources and books at the library--how to build the website. I did buy a template from Lipstickmonkey.com (my favorite template store), but other than that, I did the rest myself. You have a Google PR of 6! That is amazing! How did you get so highly ranked in the search engines?
„I learned how to be successful with the search engines via trial and error.... and lots of hours studying information about the subject on the Internet. Wish your book had been around then!” But she did wonderfully on her own!
Do you now have a SEO program that you use or does your traffic come from promotion of your columns and book?
I don't use an SEO program. Most of the traffic comes from the work I detailed above.
There are over 500 back links to your site right now. Did you ask for those or how did you get so many? In the beginning, when www.SarahSmiley.com was just beginning, I did spend some time building links. Networking with other webmasters is a great way to spread the word about your site and to build reciprocal links. These days, however, I'm too busy working on my writing, I don't always have time to fiddle with the website (except to update content), so I'm thankful I built that base in the beginning and that now my site kind of "runs itself: (again, except for the content). There is so 78 much upkeep required for a
website, but I've found that if you get the foundation right, things will take off from there. But good content is the key. Most of my links come from people reprinting my work. If any company/site uses (even to excerpt) my written work, I require that they link back to SarahSmiley.com. But I also receive a great deal of links from other military spouses who run websites and want their visitors to have access to my info. Having great information is what it's all about! With good writing and text, people will link to you naturally. You don't even have to solicit them.
How many visitors do you receive a day? I receive about 400-500 unique visitors a day, so whatever that amounts to monthly...I'm horrible with math.
What kind of marketing do you do for the site or do you just concentrate on the column? These days I just concentrate on the column because it promotes the site. But I'm also aware of the power of my website to promote the book/column as well. In fact, my literary agent found ME because he stumbled upon SarahSmiley.com. And I gain new readers everyday through the site. So it's a symbiotic thing -- one feeds the other and they both thrive. The website has been a key component in the growth of my writing career. But, yes, these days I'm afraid I don't have as much time for the site.... and again, as I said above, that's when I'm glad the foundation is there and that it "runs itself." With an established site like Sarah’s, AdSense just makes sense. It fits right in with little work involved to get a decent CTR.
On average, what is your gross monthly Google AdSense revenue? How long have you been participating in the Google AdSense program? I've been using Google AdSense since Jan 2004. I make about $120-$170 a month from the program.
79
In relation to AdSense, have you discovered what achieves higher CTR for you? Have you moved the ads around at all or experimented with what works best? Frankly, I'm so clueless about this. I'm still trying to figure AdSense out. Yes, I make great revenue from putting the links on my site, but I don't always understand why some days I make $1.00 and other days I make $9.00. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason, although I'm know there really is. But yes, I do move around the ads to see what works best. It's a work in progress, but I consider my payments from AdSense "gravy.” In other words, it pays for the upkeep and subscriptions involved in running a site, so in that regard, whether I get $1.00/day or $9, I'm happy. Check out some pages where Sarah added the AdSense code:
80
81
As Sarah says, quality content is everything. What’s more is finding your readers, then caring about what they need enough to keep them. You don’t have to obsess over AdSense to make it work for you. Just keep broadening the niche on your site and keep it of interest to your readers. Ask Sarah.

AdSense Success Story # 7 – Wendy Wood
Wendy Wood, age 32, resides in the state of New Hampshire and has been creating and maintaining her own web sites since 1998. Since that time she has learned and improved her skills along the way, including some very successful web sites as the results.
Wendy would like to share her experience and tips she has discovered while using Google’s Adsense tool.
“First, I would like to say that I signed up for the Adsense program back in 2003 and my account remained dormant due to time restraints and eventually I had forgotten about it. Imagine that! In late 2004 I began using some adsense code on one of my web site’s pages to see what kind of results I could get. It’s then that I discovered its true potential. I began doing some testing to see what was and wasn’t working for me, then in July 2005 I really got down to business. I would like to use my web site at http://www.AllWAHM.com as an example of what I have found.
83
All WAHM is a niche based blog targeted towards work at home mothers. My blog provides content relevant to advertising and marketing techniques as well as inspirational posts to boost the energy levels of my readers. When creating my content rich pages, the simplest web design works the best. The first step I usually take is drawing up a little diagram of how I would like my site laid out, if I am thinking in terms of adding Adsense to the equation, I make sure I also figure in where I will place the ad blocks. An easy flowing web site with minimal amount of images, scripts, etc. not only helps Google to see what the pages are about but is also easier for web site visitors to browse. Google’s Adsense has been a big part of this site and I am only seeing improvements to the click throughs as the weeks go by. Some tips that have worked for me in increasing my CTR (click through ratio) have been the following; 1. Placing Google’s text ads underneath images at the top of every page. You many have seen 84 several web sites using this technique – and it is definitely working for me.
How to do this; you will want to create a table that is the same width as Google’s ad format – I use 728 x 90 and only allow “text ads” to display, this is very important. You then want to create 4 images to place above the ad code ensuring that the images are spaced properly, this will take some playing around with but once you have it it will look very nice and will be what I call “clicktempting” to your web site visitors. It really does catch the eye. 2. Another thing I have found is to be sure that your Google ads background and border colors match your web site. Having the ads blend into your theme as much as possible with also improve your click through ratio. 3. The best CTR ad format has been 336 x 280. This is Google’s large rectangle ad block and I have read some studies that have been done with the results claiming to around a 7% click through ratio. The reason behind this claim is that it is not in the size of traditional banner advertising, such as a full banner which is 468 x 60. You’ve seen them every where and quite frankly they are becoming blind to web site viewers. Check out the example below – it’s from my blog – 336 x 280 AdSense ad that I implemented within the content:
85
4. On my site at http://www.AllWAHM.com I am currently using the standard blue text link color in my ads and throughout the site. I recently made this change because several months back, I was trying to come up for a color scheme for another web site and since it was going to be targeted, yet again, to work at home mothers, I polled them asking them what colors they found to be the most pleasing when viewing a web site. The winner was “blue” by 78%. Thus I changed the look at All WAHM. 5. Adding Adsense ad links within my navigational area has also been promising for me and my site. At some point, if your visitor is interested in your web site, they will look at your navigation. Having placed just the links and blending them with my site as much as possible is another thing I discovered that works.
86
Since the web site content determines what ads will be displayed with Adsense, I use key word targeted articles or posts on my blog to ensure that the relevant ads will show, giving my viewers an option for more information on that topic as well as place more cash in my pocket. As I mentioned earlier, my site is for work at home mothers, so I definitely make sure that my content reflects that. I would say the majority of my visitors are Internet savvy and know Google Ads when they see them, but by using the same font and colors as the Google Ads throughout my web site, when they see these ads they are blending together well with the entire site and it doesn’t become a “sore site to see”, so to speak. I would like to add that I use the WordPress software for my blog, which is a great piece of free software if you are thinking about blogging. There is an add on, which is also free, called AdsenseDeluxe. This add on makes it a breeze to ad the adsense coding to any part of your posts. I highly recommend it. http://wordpress.org/download/
87 Testing and tracking your ads is very important. You can never do too much. I use a software called Adsense Tracker. You install it
on one server and then you simple paste a short little snippet of code on any web page or domain. It will track your results for all of your domains in one place. I found this to be easier than using Google’s channels and it provides more statistics than Google currently offers. It has helped me track what is and isn’t working. Using this software allows me to see exactly which Google ads are being clicked, using the results I get from Adsense Tracker and a free tool I found at http://www.musthavemarketing.com/overture/ , I can research those terms that are getting the most click throughs to my site and see what the top advertiser has been paying for the term, this with the use of the keyword search took allows me to research further variation of the terms. Another way I do research is by using my Google Adwords account and using the Keyword Estimation Tool, this is another great way to play around and see what the top paying advertiser’s are willing to pay for certain keyword phrases. https://adwords.google.com/select/TrafficEstimatorSandbox When I do keyword research I try not to use the phrases that have a huge amount of searches done a month. Why? Because I have found that the competition is too great for me to compete with. The payout for some of the keywords that I choose may have a lower payout rate, but for me creating a tighter niche has brought more targeted traffic, which is my goal. For example the term “work from home” has been searched 421,300 times in August 2005, that is a pretty big number and when going to Google and typing in the same term the results currently display that there are approximately 1,890,000,000 results – that is HUGE competition.
Here is a screen shot of my earnings with Adsense for the months of August and September 2005
88
My goal is to earn $100 each month, yes that seems like a small amount but it is a very reachable goal for me with a little more work. I must say that what I have achieved at AllWAHM.com has not been much work at all and to receive revenue for the little time I have spent on the blog, it is very rewarding. I plan to reach my adsense goal by the end of the year and will probably continue testing different techniques to see what is working. I intend to create more pages that are on one topic only and are keyword dense for terms that I find will be successful. Some of these pages will include original content in the form of articles that I will either write myself or hire a ghost writer to do for me. Articles that will relate of various topics that work from home mothers will find interesting. I use one site for testing and then if I see results I will ad them to my site, in this case AllWAHM.com and so far things have been starting to look good from my end. Having a look below you can see the web stats from AllWAHM.com. The number of unique visitors is not enormous, but these visitors are interested in the niche I chose – work at home moms. “
89
Building a niche based web site and adding Adsense ads strategically throughout the site, will make you money, it may not be much at first but I feel that, as with anything, the harder you work at something the better your results will be. I have just started adding some affiliate links to my site as well, since this has been very recent, I have yet to see any results but my next step in this area is to create pages with testimonials and my own comments about the products I have chosen, which will have SEO in mind – keyword density will be important. So along with Adsense, I hope to soon be making money with a select few affiliate programs that I have joined. In closing, I think that finding a topic that you are passionate about and narrowing it down to a smaller niche, if need be, is the best place to start. Be true to yourself and create something that you will be proud of. After all, what’s wrong with being proud of your web site and receiving checks from Google at the same time?”

Story AdSense Success Story # 8 – Shannan Hearne
Shannan Hearne is the owner of http://www.SuccessPromotions.com andhas been helping people build their e-businesses since 1998. She is 36 years old, holds a BA in English and Communications from Winthrop University in SC, and has worked in various marketing positions for 15 years. Ms. Hearne also maintains assorted ecommerce websites marketing everything from appalachian music instruments to coffee to sugar gliders. Shannan has taken a moment out of her busy schedule to share her experiences with Google Adsense and her web site: http://www.appalachian-dulcimer.net
“This site was built quite simply using MS FrontPage. The domain itself is hosted through DMBHosting of who I am an affiliate (so I get a kickback) and the domain name contributes to the keyword density and SEO of the site for the appalachian dulcimer. I used a simple homey looking blue background as the average dulcimer player is an outdoorsy old fashioned person, or at least likes those things. I developed my site content to be: (a) useful for dulcimer players and shoppers and (b) very keyword dense for optimization purposes. This isn't a highly competitive niche. However, because the site is new and competing against some dulcimer sites which have been around for a long time, I have to be very serious about the search engine optimization tactics to be competitive.
91
The meta tag keywords and description again contribute to the
keyword density and tell the search engines (and the Google adsense program) exactly what the site is about so that the most relevant keyword ads are displayed to maximize the adsense revenue.” Shannan shares with us a partial screenshot of her site:
Ms. Hearne continues, “You can also see from the site that it links back and forth with two other dulcimer sites. One which is completed and one which is not. But this linking strategy helps with link popularity and ultimately Google page rank. The traffic has to come in to generate a good income from the Google Adwords Program.”
Appalachian Dulcimers
“The meta tags displayed above keep the site's search engine result 92 returns relevant.
The keywords are all strictly related to the appalachian mountain dulcimer or lap dulcimer. 1. Articles were selected based upon both their relevancy and their keyword density. 2. Page names were crafted to relate to specific aspects of the duclimer. One area I am still researching heavily for the site is luthiers (dulcimer builders) and currently have one article by Lois Hornstable which covers this fairly in-depth. Right now if you search for most of the older luthiers on the internet there is nothing so this will greatly help with the rankings for this site.
The niche itself was picked because:
1. I play the dulcimer. 2. Because there is very little information available about them online. 3. Because they are experiencing a resurgence. 4. Because they can fairly easily be picked up at estate sales, auctions, yard sales, etc. and refurbished and sold at a profit.
The next project for this site is to add my current selection of dulcimers available for purchase as that will also be a healthy revenue stream for the site.” The current Google Adsense income for this particular site is only about $4 per day. But the site is quite new and not even showing in most of the search engines yet. Screenshot of Shannan’s Adsense Earnings from July 27, 2005 to September 27, 2005
93
I did something different with this site, also, by using Google search, Google content adwords, and traditional tile adwords on different pages so that site visitors won't feel like it’s the same thing on every page. This is really important for click through conversions. While this particular site has less traffic than many sites I'm working on, it has a higher click through rate because the niche isn't large but is very targeted. I've focused the site totally on one instrument and gone for depth rather than broadness.
By viewing this screenshot of Ms. Hearne’s web site traffic for http://www.appalachian-dulcimer.net , you can see her growth has increased steadily, bringing more traffic, thus a greater potential for earning revenue with Adsense.
Shannan Hearne’s web site as she has stated is relatively new but by viewing the screenshots she has provided you can see that she is well on her way with Google Adsense, and with her further efforts to market http://www.appalachian-dulcimer.net , which is indeed a very small niche market, she will go on to greater earnings with a big smile.
Q & A with Shannan
How you discover what keywords pay big $ in your niche? Also, how much is paying the TOP bidder on AdWords?
94
Discovering which keywords, with Google Adsense, pay big is a bit trial and error as the rates aren't published anywhere and of course they change rapidly. There are some obvious ones, dulcimer, lap harp, moutain dulcimer, appalachian instruments, etc. But one has to become fairly familiar with the niche to ferret out the others. For example, one of the best selling keywords is for instrument strings, but if you don't have a page about strings, then those Google Adsense words won't come up. So that is the next design project for the dulcimer sites. Any niche is profitable in Adsense. Some definately moreso than others. My main company, Success Promotions, is an SEO and internet marketing firm and those clicks average $4-$5 each. So you almost don't mind losing site visitors to clicks. The rates aren't near so competitive for dulcimers. But they are having a renaissance and as they cycle through the comeback it will grow rapidly. Most luthiers, people who design wooden stringed instruments, don't even have a website. So instrument sales and ads for instrument shops is going to be quite lucrative as well. I think the real key to a profitable website is to have multiple income streams within the same niche. For example, I finally broke down and added Amazon affiliate links to some of the better anthologies of dulcimer music. In so doing, I've created a scenario where virtually every site visitor will become a revenue generator one way or another. At the moment, the top bidder is actually a CD of the month club at $0.32 per click.
How exactly do you plan to increase your income? Why don't you put the AdSense ads at the TOP of your Web Site?
Income will increase both by multiplying the revenue streams and by increasing search engine rankings which leads to more traffic. There aren't that many good dulcimer reference sites out there so the optimization strategies going into the site will get it to the top of the search engines which will multiply the click throughs on the Google ads. I could certainly put the Google Adword ads at the top of each page. And most publishers do. However, I would like for people to see the page content as well. And if every page visitor clicks off the site before they look at the site, it becomes one of those sites just selling Google clicks. I don't want that. AS a lover of the instrument and its 95 music, I want the site to be useful to people.
Is your Site generating other type of income besides AdSense (e.g. via Affiliate Programs)?
YES! The affiliate programs include instruments, books, and strings. As well as Amazon.com These programs also multiply the revenue streams from the site making it more and more profitable over time. I have just added reseller/affiliate links for strings by D'Darrio and Martin as well as links to brand new Black Mountain Dulcimers. The site will function as a real business. The instruments I will be selling (still in the market for a really good digital camera) are all used, refurbished. Which means they will cater to a lower budget market. But some will also be used, refurbished, collectible. For example if the luthier is no longer alive. And the NC mountains are a great place to flea market and yard sale for that type of instruments. As is ebay. But many players don't do either so that is a viable market and source of income. And a great reason for me to get to set up and play lots of older instruments. HINT: I'm doing the same thing with another site ... http://www.sugar-glider-toys.com where I sell toys I make, resell pouches others make, and have affiliate links and adword links. I'll also be adding a directory of Sugar Glider breeders which will be an additional source of income.

AdSense Success Story # 9 – Julie Bolduc
„Instant AdSense Results” Some believe placing ads on a site will automatically means a high CTR. This usually isn’t true. It takes having ads that visitors will want to click through. It also takes having a steady volume of traffic, and traffic that will be interested in the ads. So, again, we’re back to SEO and AdSense working together: targeted, ever-growing numbers of visitors and targeted ads for those visitors. Julie Bolduc is the Webmaster and owner of http://www.jpfun.com, a popular crochet site. Like most, she learned as she went and developed it into a successful site.
97
Q&A with Julie
Julie, when and how did you start your Web Site? I started the site in 1997 about a month after I bought my first PC and getting on line for the first time. At the time, I was making beads out of paper and tried to sell the beads on line. Well after about a year of doing that, I decided to switch the focus of my site to crochet since I did not even make a dime from the beads. I made some money locally here where I live but that is about it. Also, by the time I made the switch, I had learned how to code in HTML by hand and still do all of my coding by hand to this day. In 1998, I bought the jpfun.com domain name and starting offering memberships to people so they could have access to the crochet patterns I design. (I started crocheting at 5 years old and started designing for fun at 15.)
Did you build it yourself using a template or how did you do it? I built my web site with a free program called Arachnophilia from www.arachnoid.com. I still use the old version instead of the new version he has on his site. I am just comfortable with it and I am able to use it exactly the way I need to. I knew it was important for every page to basically look the same so I started using server side includes to make a header and footer file to make the site look the same from page to page. I also learned how to use .css to control how my site is presented for basic colors and image placement.
What do you do to optimize your site and the pages in it? I make sure I use the Meta tags, and a very descriptive title and keywords that are relevant to the topic of crochet. I also noticed that Google will pull words from the pages itself for its descriptions under the title in their listings so I put the description of my site near the bottom of the page in a faint but readable text. It is the same description that I use in the description Meta tag.
98
And what about other SEO methods? How do you bring targeted traffic to your site? One main way I generate traffic to my site is I signed up to about 15 crochet related mailing discussion lists through www.yahoogroups.com and I put my signature in all messages sent to the lists. I also add free crochet patterns to my site periodically and every time I do add one, I send a message to all related mailing lists plus my own 3 mailing lists I run. So, you have mailing lists for your site. What do you use them for? One is just to let people know I add the new free pattern to my site, then next one is to let people know about changes and happenings about my site and the other is just a discussion list with members who are able to post to the list.
And how many subscribers to you have to your mailing lists? I have over 3300 subscribers to the list to receive notices about the free patterns.
What are your average monthly visitors to your site? About 20,000.
Listen up ...
What Julie has done is taken her targeted traffic and broken it down even more for her mailing lists. Her visitors can get updates, patterns, or just chat with other people who like to crochet. This gives something for everyone, and nobody is getting anything in their inbox that they don’t want to read. By doing this, she increased the number of people that will sign up to be part of her mailing list. The big picture is a great SEO program that, to Julie, is just part of good web design. She’s learned techniques along the way, but she’s one of the webmasters that realizes providing quality content and optimizing your pages are the biggest step towards bringing in traffic. 99
Also, Julie realizes that the people that come to her site trust her knowledge and experience with crocheting. Signing up for discussion groups gave her credibility and brought people to her site. It doesn’t matter if you’re selling something or providing a service. The success of her site is just proof that if people like you and trust you, they will come to your site. It almost makes basic SEO seem like common sense, doesn’t it? But what about AdSense? Up until a few weeks ago, www.jpfun.com didn’t have any AdSense ads on it. Just how well do ads perform when they’re first placed on a site? Let’s look at the two different times Julie answered questions about AdSense.
Julie, on average, what is your gross monthly Google AdSense revenue? How long have you been participating in the Google AdSense program? I just put the Google AdSense code on my site yesterday so I have no information on how it is doing. And a week later, she was asked the same question again. This was Julie’s answer: I am pleasantly surprised at how well the AdSense is doing on my site. Right now, the CTR for AdSense for Content is at 1.4% and for Search it is at 9.6%.
Instantly! It just goes to show how important SEO is to AdSense, and that a decent CTR is possible with just SEO alone. Julie is going to do wonderfully with AdSense. What she’s learned about webpage design and the time 100 she’s taken to make sure her
visitors find exactly what they need will lend to her AdSense success. Look at where she automatically placed her ads.
The ads are right below a part of the site that attracts attention anyway. That’s known because of the high number of members that belong to her mailing lists. Julie automatically made the ads blend into her site because, as she made clear above, she wants a design that works. She truly understands her traffic and the important elements to a good site. Take a look at the ads too and how well targeted they are to the content. Then remember how she mentioned keywords. Using the appropriate keywords for each page works, doesn’t it? It’s not surprising Julie’s doing so well with AdSense. Her CTR should increase, and probably already has. Of course, she can try to make that happen with experimentation if she wants. Maybe she’ll put more ads on other pages and experiment with where she puts them. However, there’s no doubt that a webmaster who makes sure she targets her traffic, then gives the visitors what they want to keep them returning, will be one of the better known AdSense success stories in no time at all. Best Wishes, Codrut Turcanu. ventures! P.S. I wish you Good Luck with your AdSense Sites & ventures! ☺
