                    Greetings
                       I	am	writing	to	you	as	I	complete	my	first	month	
                    as	the	new	dean	of	the	School	of	Education	and	Allied	
                    Professions.	Former	dean	Tom	Lasley,	who	remains	with	
                    us	as	professor	of	teacher	education	and	the	executive	
                    director	of	EDvention,	was	a	wonderful	leader.	I	invite	
                    you	to	read	in	this	issue	about	how	his	vision	and	
                    passion	for	quality	education	for	all	children	energized	
                    our	School’s	impressive	record	of	innovation	and	
                    collaboration	in	meeting	educational	challenges	in	our	
                    community,	the	region	and	the	nation.	I	am	grateful	for

                                                       Variation	affects	function.	That’s	the	concept	Phil	
                                                  Anloague,	director	of	the	doctor	of	physical	therapy	
                                                  program,	illustrates	with	these	thoracic	vertebrae	that	
                                                  sit	on	a	shelf	in	his	office.	For	example,	the	notched	
                                                  facet	joints	of	the	bison’s	bone	(b)	lock	the	vertebrae	
                                                  together	to	help	support	the	substantial	weight	that	
                                                  hangs	down	from	the	quadruped’s	spine,	a	feature	less	
                                                  necessary	for	a	whale	(a),	deer	(c)	or	human	(d).
                                                       Anatomical	variations	in	our	own	bodies	help	
                                                  explain	some	common	problems	such	as	back	pain,	
                                                  said	Anloague.	“It’s	like	the	alignment	in	your	car.	If	
                                                  something	is	asymetrical,	it	wears	out.”
                                                       Even	with	minimal	variation,	humans	can	experi-
                                          a       ence	back	pain	because	our	anatomies	haven’t	quite	
                                                  caught	up	with	our	bipedalism.	
                                                       “A	lot	of	activities	we	do,	such	as	driving	our	cars	or	
                                                  sitting	at	our	computers,	put	us	in	a	slumped	position,”	
                                                  he	said.	“It	keeps	physical	therapists	in	business.”
