Event Big and Little Holiday Party

Members of Big Brothers Big Sisters gathered at Rudy‟s Lane‟s to kick off the holiday season at the Annual
BBBS Holiday Party. All who attended enjoyed an afternoon of bowling, crafting, and decorating cut-out cook-
ies. The festive cookies looked as good as they tasted! Even Santa took time out from his busy schedule to make
a surprise visit at Rudy‟s Lanes and deliver a small gift to all the Littles in attendance. We appreciate everyone
who contributed to make this holiday celebration a success: Ron Balzen, Rudy‟s Lanes, Service League of Man-
itowoc County, and the Noon Optimist Club. A holly, jolly good time was had by all!

                                   Shop With A Cop

Area law enforcement and emergency services agencies partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters on December
15th to make Christmas a little brighter for selected children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program.
Ten children from Big Brothers Big Sisters met officers and emergency personnel at our local Police Department
where they were matched for a very important mission of shopping for those all-important Christmas gifts. Each
child was armed with their shopping list as they boarded the Maritime Metro Transit bus in the company of
emergency personnel heading for the Wal-Mart store.
Once at the store, emergency personnel with wide-eyed children were off on their Christmas shopping mission.
The group made quick work of their assigned duties and were back at the checkouts with the ten lucky children
in record time. Gifts from basic needs to toys filled the shopping carts.
Prior to departing Walmart Lt. Kurk Bessler of the Manitowoc Sheriff‟s Department, talked to children about the
importance of giving and sharing with others less fortunate. With that thought in mind, each child was given a
dollar to place in the Salvation Army donation kettle as they exited the store.
The troop of emergency personnel and children then headed back to the police department where they quickly
got to the task of wrapping gifts before family members reported back to pick up their children. It was a treat to
observe our highly qualified emergency personnel fumbling as they attempted to assist the children wrap gifts.
As they neared the end of the gift wrapping assignment, a surprise visitor in a red and white fur suit showed up
to give an additional gift to each child. Santa shared pizza with the children and was off to prepare for his big
night.
The following agencies, groups and businesses contributed to make Shop with a Cop possible.
Ant Hill Mob, Manitowoc Professional Police Association, The Y, Maritime Metro Transit, Little Caesar‟s Piz-
za, Hi Way 42 Garage, Luigi‟s Pizza, Four Seasons Restaurant, Lord‟s n Ladies, Pepsi, Local law enforcement
and fire personnel: Manitowoc P.D., Manitowoc County Sheriff, Wisconsin Troopers Association, Cleveland

Past Match Event - Lambeau Field

Our November Match Event included a bus trip to Green Bay and tours of Lambeau Field and the Packers Hall
of Fame. Bigs and Littles had some great views of Lambeau Field including one from a private suite and one
from the same tunnel where the players enter the field. They even got a sneak peek of the equipment truck being
loaded and some of the group got a wave from head coach Mike McCarthy. While in the Hall of Fame, every-
one enjoyed learning the history of the Green Bay Packers organization and looking at some historic memorabil-
ia including the 3 Super Bowl trophies. It was a great trip and all enjoyed their time in Green Bay!

                        November Match of the Month
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Manitowoc County has
named Big Brother Jed Schuett and Little Brother Adam as its
Match of the Month for November. Each month, the Big
Brothers Big Sisters organization selects a “match” for this
special recognition. The award is given in honor of the com-
mitment the volunteer and child have made to each other and
to the organization in developing a special friendship.
Jed and Adam were matched in November 2005. They
developed a special friendship through sharing similar inter-
ests and exploring new activities together. A few of their fa-
vorite activities to do are watching movies, going bowling,
and going to waterparks. They also have enjoyed going to
sporting events together such as: Green Bay Gamblers, Mil-
waukee Brewers or Bucks game. It‟s been more difficult to
find time to get together as they‟ve both gotten busier. However, they still get together at least twice a month and
keep in touch every week. Their future plans include visiting a museum in Chicago and going to a Green Bay
Packers game.
Jed said he got involved with BBBS because he is just a “kid at heart” himself. He wanted to help mentor
a young person and help develop the child‟s interests. Adam said that having Jed in his life has given him a father
figure to look up to. As Adam has grown older, they both admitted that they “just talk” a lot more now than they
used to.

                        December Match of the Month
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Manitowoc County is pleased to
name Big Couple Tom and Betsy Kocourek and Little Brother
Colton as December 2010 Match of the Month.
Colton, currently a student at Mishicot Middle School, wait-
ed patiently to be paired with a “Big”. In January 2007 the wait was
over and Colton was matched with not one, but two Bigs. Accord-
ing to Colton, Big Couple Tom and Betsy were “worth the wait.”
As a match, Tom, Betsy, and Colton enjoy many activities
together, such as sharing meals, spending time on the farm, playing
games, and attending BBBS agency sponsored events, as well as
community events. Tom and Colton share an interest in outdoor sports and like to spend summer afternoons fish-
ing. The two have also recently become members of the Vikings Gun Club where they plan to do some practice
trap shooting. As Colton has gotten older, he‟s become more involved in sports and other activities. The
Kocoureks enjoy supporting Colton in his activities.
Big Couple, Tom and Betsy enjoy having Colton as part of their family and Colton looks forward to the
“fun” he has when they are together. Tom, Betsy, and Colton get along so well because they are all so upbeat and
active. They enjoy learning, socializing, and having fun. Tom and Betsy have been a positive asset in Colton‟s
life, providing him with new experiences and an additional outlet.
They have developed a special friendship and created fun memories that will last a lifetime. Congratula-
tions on four years together.
