INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

1.          This question paper consists of two (2) parts : PART A (3 Questions)
                                                            PART B (3 Questions)

2.        Answer Question 1 (compulsory) and any other one (1) question from PART A, and any
          two (2) questions from PART B, in separate Answer Booklets. Start each answer on a new
          page.

3.        All measurement shall be in strict accordance with the principles laid down in the Malaysian
          Standard Method of Measurement of Building Works (Second Edition) (SMM2). Marks will
          be given based on the correct principles and accuracy of the measurement, accurate and
          completeness of descriptions and understanding of construction principles.

4.        Do not bring any material into the examination room unless permission is given by the
          invigilator.

5.          Please check to make sure that this examination pack consists of:

              ii)   a one-page Appendix 1

a) List and explain five (5) benefits clients gained from engaging consultant quantity
   surveyors during pre-contract stage.
                                                                           (10 marks)

b) The Bills of Quantities is a comprehensive document prepared by the quantity surveyor.
   List and explain five (5) advantages of using bills of quantities in any construction
   projects.

PARTB

With reference to the data given in APPENDIX 1, analyse the unit rates of the items below.
You are allowed to make necessary assumptions of other cost of materials, plants and
labours that are not given. All assumptions made must be based on the current market
prices and must be well stated in your answers.


QUESTION 1

a) Explain the following components of prices that needs to be considered when building up
   a unit rate for any item in Bills of Quantities:

    i)       Material
    ii)      Labour
    iii)     Plant/ Machinery
                                                                                (9 marks)

b) Half brickwork in common bricks in cement lime mortar (1:1:6) in stretcher bond with
   brick reinforcement at every fourth course, non-load bearing - m2.
                                                                             (10 marks)

c) Excavate trench to receive foundation starting from reduced level maximum depth not
   exceeding 2.00 m. (by hand) - m3.
                                                                             (6 marks)


QUESTION 2

a) Explain the factors to be considered when deciding whether to buy or rent a plant/
   machine for construction.
                                                                           (6 marks)

b) Remove excavated material and deposit in heap 20 km distance - m3.
                                                                               (10 marks)

c) Filling to make up level average 100mm thick with hardcore of clean hard stones
   obtained off site - m3.
                                                                          (9 marks)

a) Reinforced in-situ concrete Grade 25 in foundation in trench (by machine) - m3.

   felt lapped 100mm at joints and bedded in cement, lime and sand mortar (1:1:6)
   (measured net - no allowance made for laps) - m.
