                               Youth Talent Extravaganza


                                  Statement of Objectives




      The call of God for every Christian is a call to active ministry and service for
Jesus Christ. The Christian is to grow in the Lord and to use his talents to minister to
the needs of people. The Youth Talent Extravaganza is a vehicle for youth to develop
their talents to become involved in active ministry, and to reach their full potential for
Jesus Christ.




      Youth Talent Extravaganza seeks to achieve the following objectives:


          1. To involve Pentecostal Free Will Baptist youth in developing talents
                and abilities for the glory of God.


          2. To motivate youth to utilize their talents and abilities in outreach and
                evangelism as creative communicator=s of God=s Word.


          3. To lead youth into a commitment and personal relationship with God.


          4. To provide opportunities for youth to interact socially with other youth
                in the Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.




                                                6
The purpose of this manual is to inform youth of the requirements and expectations of
the Youth Talent Extravaganza. It is the desire of the CE Department that this program
will expand each year and involve a majority of youth in sharing their talent. As a
result of anticipated expansion, the manual will be updated periodically with additional
information. This manual is to serve as a resource to answer questions regarding
Youth Talent Extravaganza, to clarify evaluation criteria, and to set forth principles to
develop talent for the glory of God. It is our prayer that God will call young men and
women into active ministry and evangelism through the Youth Talent Extravaganza.

                                     Participation


Entry Requirements


1. Each participant must be between the ages of 7 and 19 at the time of
their district competition. There will be three divisions: Elementary (7-9);
Junior (10-13); and Senior (14-19).


2. Each participant must attend a Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church,
Sunday School, or youth program.

3. All Youth Talent Extravaganza entry forms and all Creative Writing Entries
must be submitted to their CC District Director (see address on page 3) one
week in advance with a registration fee of $10.00 per entry. Note: For
multiple entries, you may make copies of entry forms in this booklet.


4. Group entries must be from the same church and remain as originally
entered on each level of competition. One substitution may be made in case
of an emergency.


Performance


1. Each district may submit one entry from each of the categories in the
Denominational Youth Talent Extravaganza.


2. Soundtracks may be used in any performance; however, if judges
determine background vocals or duplication of voices or instruments on the
tape distracts or interferes with the performance, points may be deducted
from the score.


3. Participants at the Youth Talent Extravaganza are expected to be on time
and ready to perform. Failure to appear at the designated time and place
may disqualify a participant from competition.


4. Presentations exceeding the time limits will be penalized 15 points.
Penalty points will be subtracted from the total points earned.

2.   Dramatic Arts

          Drama Presentations should be no more than 7 minutes
          and should reflect a Christian message.

                               Youth Talent Extravaganza
                                      Category Guidelines

MUSIC


1.      Participation is limited to Christian music and must not exceed 5 minutes.
2.      It is a good idea for original music to be copyrighted before performance.
3.      Multiple voice entries will consist of 2 to 4 persons. Choir entries will consist of 5 or more
        persons.
4.      Soundtracks and accompaniment may be used but ONLY the vocal and instrumental performance
        will be judged.


DRAMATIC ARTS


1.      A brief description of the selection must be presented to the judges prior to the presentation. The

     description must include name, address, and district of contestant on front page. The description
     must be attached to the entry form.
2.   The presentation must have a Christian Theme and not exceed 7 minutes.
3.   Entries cannot be altered between district and denominational competition.
4.   Entries must be presented tastefully.


CREATIVE WRITING


1.   The two choices for this category are: Essay fiction/non-fiction, or poetry. Essay entries must have
     a Christian Theme and not exceed 500-700 words in length.
2.   Entries must be original, typed, and double-spaced on eight and one-half by eleven (8 2 x 11)
     paper.
3.   The name of the contestant must be in the upper right corner of the first page,
     with page numbers centered at the bottom of each page.
4.   Winning entries in the denominational competition will be submitted to the MESSENGER for
     publication.
5.   A title page for each entry will include: contestant=s name, address, age, name of church, and the
     name of the contestant=s pastor.


CREATIVE ARTS


1.   The contestant has one of three choices: painting and sketches, photography, and
     crafts. No computer altered graphics.
2.   All entries must be the original work of the contestant, have an appropriate theme, and cannot be
     altered between district and denominational competition.
3.   Contestants must present his/her entry with a 3 x 5 placard stating the entrant=s name and the
     theme of the presentation.




     REMEMBER: The goal of this program is to edify Christ. Therefore,
                            entries must be tastefully presented.

                              Definition of Judging Terms

                                            MUSIC
Tone - voice or instrument quality, clearness, fullness of sound


Technique - breath control, rhythm, accuracy of notes, control of voice or
instrument, use of harmony


Diction - pronunciation of words, correct vowel placement, singing through vowels
and placing consonants


Phrasing - flow of musical thought, rise and fall within phrase, smoothness


Interpretation - style, poise, expression, eye contact, posture and gestures fitting
lyrics and music


Musical Effect - fluency, artistry; How well selection learned? Memorized?


Intensity and Projection - How well is the contestant Agetting into@ the music? Is
volume and intensity relative to style and matter?


Ministerial Effect - How well is the selection ministering to the audience: Is
presentation a performance or ministry?


Level of Difficulty - Is selection easy, medium, or difficult based on contestant=s age
(age appropriate)?


Stage Presentation - appearance, approach and departure, confidence level

Theme - Is it appropriate?


Organization - Does essay follow correct form: introduction, theme, development of
idea and conclusion? Are the essay=s points given logically and convincingly?


Details - Is the theme descriptive? Does it come full circle? Is essay descriptive or
argumentative? Does it describe or argue the point well?


Continuity - Does the composition develop the theme throughout? Is there a good
flow thought? How tight are the sentences? Are transitions clear?


Spelling - Are words spelled correctly? If not, is there a purpose for misspelled
words?


Grammar - subject/verb agreement, pronoun agreement, no misplaced modifiers,
etc.


Punctuation - Is punctuation correct?


General Appearance - What extra effort did the writer use to make the thesis
professional looking? Is it written according to instructions?

Theme - Is it appropriate?


Continuity - Are transitions smooth? Do sentences flow together smoothly?


Rhythm and/or Rhyme - Is rhythm smooth? Is meter regular? Does rhythm and
rhyme compliment poem?


Poetic Devices - Use of poetic device, figures of speech
       simile- comparison of two things using like or as
       metaphor - comparison of two things
       hyperbole - exaggeration
       irony- use of words to promote the opposite meaning
       personification - giving an object human characteristics
       anthropomorphism - giving God human characteristics
       paradox - contradictory statement that may be true


Spelling - Is it accurate? If not is there a purpose for misspelled words?


Grammar - subject/verb agreement, pronoun agreement, no misplaced modifiers,
etc.


Punctuation - Is it correct?


General Appearance - Does the writer make an effort to give the poem a

professional appearance? Is it written according to instructions?

Mood - Is the drama Abelievable@? Does the presentation have a fluid motion?
How much effort is used to present the theme?


Animation - enthusiasm, posture, spirit


Rapport - Does the contestant have a good rapport and eye contact with the
audience and other characters?


Characterization - Does the actor fill the role properly? Does the actor make you
feel that he/she is the character being played? Is the actor consistent with
the character?


Appropriate Appearance - Does the actor=s appearance compliment what he/she
is trying to say? (Dress, movements, expressions, etc.)


Movement and/or Gestures - Does the drama appear lively or static? Is the actor
in tempo with the music, if used? Does the actor appear relaxed and confident? When
presenting as a group, are the movements together and fluid?

Difficulty - easy, medium or difficult, age appropriate?


Stage Presence - How well does the actor enter/depart? Does the actor appear
poised? Does the actor take charge of the stage?

Perspective - Proper symmetry (angle/line/etc.), proper use of shadow and
highlight


Color Scheme/Contrast - Are contrasts accurate? Do colors work well together?
Is the work lively?


Difficulty - Age appropriate?




                                      Photography




Creativity - Is it a basic home photograph or something unique? What is special
about this photograph?


Clarity - Focus? Lighting? Sharpness? Exposure?

Presentation - Frame? Matting? How does the entire presentation appear? Does
it meet specifications?




                                          Crafts


Color Scheme - Does the use of color or the lack there of, enhance the
appearance? Do the chosen colors work well together? Are the colors appropriate
for this craft?


Craftsmanship - Did the contestant do his/her best to present quality
craftsmanship?


Artistry - How much thought was put into the handiwork?


Presentation - What special effort was made to present this craft in a way to make
it more appealing to the eye?




                                Job Description of Judges


       Judges will evaluate in each category according to specific factors on
the scoring sheet. Each factor, as previously described, will appear on the
evaluation sheet and will be scored on the following basis:

    After evaluation by the judges, the evaluation sheets will be taken to a private
    room where scoring secretaries will tally and average the scores. The
    decision of the judges is final and no explanation to anyone is needed to
    justify the decision.
